Boston Selectmen's Minutes from 1754 to 1763

 

 

At a Meeting of the Selectmen Decemr 21, 1763.

Present

John Scollay Esqr.
Benjamin Austin Esqr.
Samuel Sewall Esqr.
Ezekiel Lewis Esqr.

Capt. Joseph Doble Master of the Briggandine Nancy from Ferryland in Newfoundland, attended the Selectmen at their Chamber, and Reports--That he left that place the 1st. of December last, and three Days after, had one of his Men taken sick as he supposed with the Small Pox, but is not certain, as the Eruption did not fill, he died in about three or four Days from his being taken; when all that he had about Him liable to infection was immediately thrown overboard--that there are three or four of his Men who have not had the Distemper--but he apprehends said Vessell may be permitted to come up to Town from Rainsfords Island, where she has been stopt by way of precaution without any danger to the Inhabitants if the Selectmen thought proper--

whereupon

Voted, that Capt. Doble have liberty to bring his Briggandine up to Boston, provided

those Persons on board who have not had the Small Pox, be first tended & sent to the Hospital.

The following directions were given Mr. Thomas Hartley Keeper of the Hospital.

Sir--

The Briggandine Nancy Joseph Doble Master from Newfoundland, having been stopt at Rainsfords Island on suspicion of having the Small Pox on board, and having as you have Reported to us been smoked & Cleansed so that she may be permitted to come to Town without danger to the Inhabitant; You may there fore permit her to come up to Town first taking on Shore all those Persons; that have not had the Small Pox who you are to keep at the Hospital till our further Orders.

The Briggne. Nancy Joseph Doble Master from Newfoundland, stopt at Rainsfords Island on suspicion of having the Small Pox, having been examined by us we are of Opinion she may be permitted to come up to Town without endangering the Health of the Inhabitants if your Excellency thinks fit--We are

Sent to the Alms House on the Province Acct. Thos. Pratt a Stranger who came from Newfoundland in Capo. Archer Signd by John Scollay & Saml. Grant Selectmen & Royall Tyler Overseer.

Sent to the Alms House on the Province Accot. Patrick Ryan a Stranger no Inhabitant of this Province He came from New foundland in Capt. Stephen Brown(???).
