Fortuna on Le Have Bank Schooner native of Bay Bull's, N. F., was capsized in a dory from schooner After clinging to the dory for three hours he was compelled by exhaustion to loose his hold, and was drowned. His dorymate, Michael McCoady, was rescued by his shipmates an hour later, having succeeded in righting the dory, which was provided with air tanks.

The explosion on board the "Coban" while on her way from St. John's to Montreal on Saturday week last, resulted in the death of three persons, two of them Newfoundlanders. One of them was a William Dawe of Cupids, who left there for Montreal on the steamer. His sudden death is felt at Cupids keenly, where he leaves a wife and two children and especially so, as the body of the unfortunate man was not recovered, it being hurled into the sea by the force of the explosion.

My grandfather’s drowning left five children orphaned as my Nan (Julia, daughter of Aaron and Rebecca Myles) passed away in 1933.  Their children were Arch, Lilian, John, William (my father) and Evelyn.   Will also left a young family.   My grandfather’s body was recovered sometime later, but rather than return him to his children, he was returned to the sea.

October 2, 1974 Michael Cabot (25 yrs, 11 Months) was lost at sea while working on the MV Labrador Foam out of L'anse Au Loup, NL.
He left to morn a wife and five small children. The tragic event happened on his last trip for the year
while fishing off Black Tickle, NL.

Wayne Cliftus Hatcher, Born Jan 8, 1952, Lost at sea May 8, 1976.  Left behind a pregnant wife Vera Hatcher and 5 small children. (Lucy, Tracy, Annette, Wayne and Jason (Beverley was born in Oct 1976)).  Story can be found in book Final Voyages Vol II by Jim Wellman
