This cemetery was used by the residents of Rowsell’s Island. There was no suitable land on the Island to bury their dead, so they brought them across by boat to the Cull’s Island for burial, hoisted them up a cliff and carried them to a small cemetery about 1 mile from Leading Tickles. When I was led to the site in 1990 by Mark Rowsell, an elderly resident of Leading Tickles, the path was unmarked and the cemetery was completely overgrown. There is no way I could have found it without his help. |
