For a description of the beginnings and early activities of this group, please refer to an excellent article (Description of the Newfoundland School Society) in the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland

Please remember a couple of important points. First of all, the individuals listed in the reports had donated throughout the year, and the date does not necessarily mean that those individuals lived in the towns listed, nor were alive at the official date of the report. However, there is a good chance that people listed were still alive at the time of the report living in the towns listed. Secondly, these lists by no means included all towns in existance at their time of publication. Nor were they a comprehensive listing for people living in the towns listed, like a directory or census might be. They only list the individuals who donated something to the society. Therefore, if you don't find an individual you are looking for, don't despair. It might mean that he could not, or would not donated to the society. For a complete list of report years and the catalog numbers with which they could be interlibrary loaned, please click on the link below to view the listing. Important: The date listed in the index is the date the report was published.  The reports normally covered the previous school year. Therefore, the report does not mean that an individual listed in the report was living in that town on the date of the report, but rather in that town sometime in the previous year or so.

These reports have been made possible by the work of over 2 dozen people at the cost of a great deal of time and money.  Special thanks are extended to these great people as well as my brother, who sat with me in libraries for hours copying these reports even though he seemed board to death. Please don't copy this information for any reason except for personal family tree research. This project was conceived of, and headed by the then web site director One final, very important note, Michael may have made a mistake in classifying some of the towns under certain districts. If you discover any such errors, please contact me,

Don Tate dtate03@cfl.rr.com immediately, and let me know.

Note: Michael Cooper resigned from this project in Feb. of 1999, In an effort to continue this project Bill and I have agreed to create the html files and upload them to the web. If anybody out there has any of these files, please send them along and we will be glad to put them into the pages for others to search through. Maybe one of them will provide that elusive clue that opens a locked door. Thanks to all of those who have helped bring these pages to you.
