William George Bragg

William George Bragg
Channel, Port-aux-Basques
c1855 - 1860

This is a photo of my great-greatgrandfather,
William George Bragg (1808-66), who was,
as far as my research can tell, the earliest
of that clan to appear in a photo, circa 1855-60.
His gravestone still stands in the East End Cemetary,
one of the oldest in Channel, Newfoundland.
According to historical sources, Joseph and
Mary Bragg of Grand Bank (or Fortune) went to
Channel (then called Point Blanche) and may be
the fore-runners of all the Braggs there. The
William George of the attached photo was the
youngest of their seven children.
