PORTUGAL COVE
A fishing settelment on the south side of Conception Bay, district of St John's. The settelment is built near the foot of a range of rocky hills and on verry rocky ground. Farming is carried on outside of the settelment and St John's is partly supplied with salmon by its inhabitants. It is the packet station for the steamer plying in Conception Bay, and for the ferry running to Belle Isle. Distant from St John's by road 9 1/2 miles. Population 650.
