Donated by Nels Bailey

John Nelson Bailey, Regiment # 970313, Jack, as he was known, had been in the CLB for nine years before joining up at age 20. He had attained the highest rank he could in that organization. He was a Sergeant.
The CLB was an Anglican organization and Jack was Methodist. His paramilitary training in the CLB helped his rise to Sergeant in the regiment.
Jack had very little formal education, having left school in the sixth book to help his widowed mother by working where he could. He was recognised mostly for his street smarts and common sense.
He had sustained two injuries that we know of. One was a very bad burn from a boiler explosion in Scotland during training exercises. This left him in hospital for several months before being shipped out with the rest of the regiment to North Africa. His second was being struck by a piece of shrapnel, which left him with a piece missing from his lip and a broken tooth.
Upon his return to Newfoundland he married his childhood sweetheart, whom he had been dating before he went overseas. Jack and "Ginger" had two children and 3 grandsons before his passing in 2004.
His beloved "Ginger" (Viola) passed in 2013.
