Passed away at St. Clare's Hospital, St. John's on August 2, 2006, Douglas Matthews of Wareham, age 85 years. Predeceased by his father, John Matthews; mother, Amelia Matthews; wife, Lucy Matthews; son, Stephan Mathews; grandson, Bertram Lee Rogers; sons-in-law, Robert Hounsell, Harvey Fancy; sisters, Charlotte Brown, Hannah Button, Delilah Rogers, Sarah Blackmore, Beatrice Green; and brother, Joseph Matthews. SIMMS, Annie (Ann) -
Passed away at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander on August 2, 2006, Mrs. Annie Simms of Gander, age 72. Mrs. Simms is predeceased by her daughter, Gail Brewer (2004); brothers, Tom Spurrell (1998) and Eric Spurrell (2005). Left with fond and loving memories are her husband, Wilson of Gander; sons, Brian and wife, Lorraine of Devon, Alberta, Wayne and wife, Kelly of Calgary, Dean of Calgary; son-in-law, Dan Brewer of Torbay, NL; daughters, Ruth of Calgary, Katrea and husband, Gary of Calgary, Cynthia and Wade of Calgary; sister, Eleanor of Victoria, BC; sisters-in-law, Marion Spurrell of Badger's Quay and Rose Spurrell of Gander; grandchildren, Greg, Ashley, Corey, Chantel, Stephanie, Brittney, Haley, Jason, Danny, Nichole, Brandon, Kelsey, Courtney, Justin; and a large circle of other relatives and friends. GREEN, Watson -
Passed peacefully away on August 3, 2006 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, Watson Green of Gambo, NL at the age of 90 ½ years. Predeceased by his wife, Joan (1973); and two children, John and Michael. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his two sons, Leslie (Daisy) and John (Linda); two daughters, Frances Strang (David) and Margaret Hender (Claude); nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Louise George, Annie Collins and Lillian Green; as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. Funeral service was held on August 6th at Emmanuel United Church in Gambo with Rev. Carl Arnold presiding. Interment followed at the United Church Cemetery . Passed away at Bonnews Lodge, Badger's Quay on August 5, 2006, Florrie Mae Parsons, formerly of Trinity, in her 72nd year. Predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Gladys Wells; husband, Harold Douglas Parsons; brother, Ederick Wells; and sister, Lydia Brown (Wells). Passed away on August 10, 2006 at Brookfield Hospital, Clifford Sturge, age 73. Predeceased by parents, Katie and Richard; stepmother, Priscilla; and brothers, Daniel Winsor and Stuart Winsor. WRIGHT, Dr. Aubrey Willis -
Passed peacefully away on August 12, 2006 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, Dr. Aubrey Willis Wright, age 71 years. Predeceased by parents, Oswald and Lydia Wright; brothers, Donald and Rhoyd Wright. GRANDY, Dr. Thomas Boyde, of Ottawa, Ontario -
Died suddenly on August 12, 2006 while on vacation in Wesleyville, Newfoundland, age 67 years. Husband of Patricia Hann, father of Bonnie and Alan, father-in-law of Jenny, devoted grandfather of Julianne (12) and Carolyn (10) of Bonnie, and Reese (7) and Rowan (3) of Alan and Jenny, and faithful caregiver to Freddie dog (16). Tom was a much loved son-in-law of Ruth and the late Lloyd Hann of Wesleyville. Tom was the son of the late Rev. Samuel and Millicent Grandy of Garnish, Newfoundland and was the eldest of eight brothers and sisters, with whom he had just spent four days at a family reunion in Garnish. He will be greatly missed by sisters, Goldwyn King (Clayton) of Bell Island, the Rev. Eliza Potter of Pouch Cove, Joy Sinclair (John William) of Nova Scotia and brothers, the Rev. Dr. Waldo (Lois) of Nova Scotia, Larry (Beverley) of Topsail, Carl (Fern) of Nova Scotia and Dr. Elwood (Linda) of Nova Scotia. Tom was a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland and the University of Albert, where he received a PhD in nuclear physics. He was a post doctorate fellow at the University of Kentucky for a number of years before moving on to a career in communications. In the 1970's he served as Director of Communications for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. After moving to Ottawa, he was founding partner in Nordicity Group. In recent years he was employed by IBM in international business development and worked extensively in many countries around the world. Tom was a global citizen but no matter how well travelled he was, he particularly enjoyed his summers in Newfoundland - he knew all the brooks and marshes and loved the trailer life with Pat and his beloved grandchildren. Tom will be greatly missed by his family and large circle of friends in many parts of Canada. A service of remembrance was held at Jubilee United Church, Wesleyville, Newfoundland on August 18, 2006. Tom was a firm believer in continuing education and knowledge gathering; and many years ago he and his family established a scholarship fund at Memorial University of Newfoundland. SAMSON, Pearl -
Passed peacefully away on August 14, 2006, Pearl Samson in her 82nd year. Predeceased by her husband, Clyde. Left to mourn two daughters, Shirley (Carmen) Oldford and Judy Samson, sister, Annie, brother, Kenneth, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Special thanks to Rev. Thomas, the pall bearers and the staff of Bay Watch Manor. Also everyone who helped relieve the sorrow of the passing of a dear friend, Mother and Grandmother. Your kindness is greatly appreciated. ABBOTT, Maxwell -
Passed away at Hillcrest Manor in Musgrave Harbour on August 14, 2006, Mr. Maxwell Abbott of Musgrave Harbour in his 84th year. Predeceased by his parents, Baxter and Gertrude Abbott; wife, Florrie; son, Baxter Jr.; and son-in-law, Oliver Mouland. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his two sons, Captain Collin Abbott (Jacqueline) of Peterview and Boyd Abbott (Doris) of Fort McMurray, AB; four daughters, Myrtis Mouland of Musgrave Harbour, Maxine Lewis (George) of Labrador City, Madeline Willis (Newman) of Fort McMurray, AB and Yvonne Bungay (Raymond) of Musgrave Harbour; two brothers, Leo Abbott (Jean) of Musgrave Harbour and Gershon Abbott (Mereida) of Musgrave Harbour; one sister, Marie Sturge of Gander; 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Passed peacefully away on August 15, 2006 at Gander Hospital, Sarah Jane Sturge, age 93. Predeceased by her parents, Alfreda and Job Keats; husband, George Keats; sons, John and Job (Mary) Keats; brother, Ethelred; and sister-in-law, Maude Keats. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are 41 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; 49 great-great-grandchildren; and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Funeral service was held on August 18th at the Salvation Army Citadel in Dover. Interment followed at the Salvation Army Cemetery in Dover. Passed peacefully away at his residence in Gander on August 15, 2006, Richard Fudge, age 58 years. Predeceased by his parents, Otto and Gladys Fudge, brother, Roger, sister, Margaret. Passed away suddenly on August 16, 2006 at Brookfield Hospital, Percy Wayne Button of Badger's Quay, age 50 years. BLACKWOOD, Ella Elizabeth May -
Passed peacefully away at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander on August 18, 2006 after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Ella Elizabeth May Blackwood of Clarke's Head in her 61st year. May was predeceased by her first husband, Leroy Bauld, her father, Cecil Leslie Blake and her brother, Alvin E. Blake. Left behind to honour her memory are her mother Eva Blake; her husband, Harold; one son, Shaw Bauld (Rhonda) of Clarke's Head; daughter, Linda Bursey (Darren) of Gander; stepdaughter, Pauline Collins (Eugene) of Carmanville; her beloved grandchildren, Sarah and Morgan Bauld; her namesake, Hannah May Bursey; as well as her step grandchildren, Dwayne Collins (Jeff) of Toronto, ON, Dion Collins (Kayla) of St. John's and Enise Collins of Calgary, AB; also remembering their sister with great affection is her brother, Frank Blake (Ann) of Victoria Cove; her sisters, Ruby Snow (Evan) of Campbellton, Marjorie Snow (Bill) of St. Phillips, Isabel Hancott of Fredericton and Nellie Burke (Sean) of St. John's; as well as her sister-in-law, Daphne Blake of Main Point. Also remembering Aunt May fondly are twenty-one nieces and nephews, one of whom, Rhonda Gidge (Kevin) of Port Coquitlam, BC, held an extra special place in May's heart. May was her "Mom" for the first fours years of Rhonda's life, and Rhonda's daughters, Kaitlyn and Rhianna will miss Nana very much. May will also be remembered by her uncle, Nelson Holmes of Seldom and her only first cousins, George King (Frances) of Lochaline, Scotland, Chrissie O'Neil (George) of Fort William, Scotland, Elsie Shillinglaw (David) of Worcester, South Africa and Elizabeth Meredith (Dick) of Cleethorpes, England, as well as other relatives and friends too numerous to name. May made lasting friendships wherever she went and many people will be saddened to hear of her passing. She leaves a legacy of love, and those of us left behind will feel sorrow that she has gone on ahead but also joy that we were given the opportunity to know her. A service celebrating her life was held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church with internment in the Anglican Cemetery in Clarke's Head. All arrangements were handled with great care and consideration by Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home Ltd., Lewisporte. HANN, Charles -
Passed peacefully away on August 27, 2006 at Bonnews Lodge, Badger's Quay, Charles Hann, formerly of Valleyfield, age 76. Predeceased by parents, Clarence and Cassie Hann; wife, Lydia; son, Gary; and grandson, Gary. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Maisie; sons, Bob of Valleyfield , Eric (Meta) of Valleyfield and Lester of St. John's; daughters, Cassie Hann (Warren) and Theresa Hann (Rick), all of Valleyfield; brother, Ches Hann (Carol-Ann) of Mt. Pearl; sister, Louise Dinham (Roy) of St. John's; grandchildren, Charles, Lisa (Ryan) Charlie, Andre, Glenn and Myles; great-grandchildren, Logan, Madison, Justin, Cole and Matthew; and a large circle of family and friends. Funeral service was held on August 30th at the United Church, Valleyfield with Rev. S. Parsons officiating. Interment followed at the United church Cemetery, Valleyfield . Arrangements entrusted to the care of Kittiwake Funeral Home, Pound Cove-Musgrave Harbour.

MATCHIM, Joseph Isaac (Joe) -
Died on August 27, 2006, aged 89 years, 11 months, 11 days. Predeceased by infant daughter, Audrey Josephine; parents, Stanley and Martha Ann; siblings, Alma, Dorothy, Owen, Maxwell and Wilfred. Left to remember his wonderful life are his devoted wife, Sadie of 60 years, 8 months; Audrey (Max), Stephanie (Craig), Joyce (Lee), Ross (Brenda), Jacintha (Steven), Jonathan (Krista), Kelly, Melissa, Brady, Crewe ; sisters, Nellie, Louise and Nora (Mac); nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 30th from Squire's Funeral Home and Holy Cross Anglican Church, Eastport with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Eastport. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Cross Cemetery Fund or The Arthritis Society.
