Burin Peninsula Obituaries

The area includes from Terrenceville on down to Grand Bank, over to Lamaline, St. Lawrence, Burin, Marystown and down the Peninsula again to Boat Harbour. All the communities are not named but serves the whole of the Peninsula.

 

BARNES, Rosalie Alberta (nee Hillier)
Born in Taylor's Bay, NL. Passed peacefully away December 7, 2020, at the age of 74, surrounded by her family after suffering a long illness. Predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Velma; her brother Frederick (Shirley); her sister Ellen and aunt Leah (Burt). Leaving to mourn her husband of 52 years Thomas; her sons: Nelson (Angela), Perry (Sharon) and Jason. Her siblings: Gladys (Edgar), Lloyd (Yvonne), Henry (Solonge), Joan and Lester (Barb). Grandchildren: Andrew, Brianna, Christian, Alexander, Jaime and Trinity. Special thanks to nieces: Mary (Marty) and Sarah (Jeff) and best friend Michelle (Greg). Heartfelt thanks to Doctor Russell Dawe and the staff of the Miller Center Palliative Care Unit, TLC Home-care, especially Lacie and Faith. Also leaving a large circle of family, friends and the brothers and sisters of The Jehovah's Witnesses. She was well known for her never ending heart, acceptance and willingness to help anyone who needed it. As well as her lasting faith, strength and courage that served her so well right to the end. Cremation has taken place thanks to Barrett's Funeral Home. An online service will be held on Saturday December 12 at 2 p.m. with interment to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be given to the Canadian Lung Association or to the family.

BISHOP, James "Jim" Chester
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear loved one at Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, James "Jim" Chester Bishop, aged 73 years. Predeceased by parents Reginald and Alma Bishop. Leaving to mourn his loving Partner Doreen of 29 years, his precious twin daughters Anita ( Scott) Craig of Ontario, Juanita (Mike) Turner of Ontario; stepdaughters Sharmaine (Mike) of Stephenville, Stephanie (Charlie) of Alberta, Chanette (Mike) of Nova Scotia; grandchildren Leif, Tristan, Dylan, Jacob, Damon, Sarah, great- grandchild Dane ; special cousins Bill (Norma) Jarvis of Red Harbour, Willard (Betty) Senior of Red Harbour, Debbie Lynch (Terry) of St. John's plus a large circle of other family and friends. Although a quiet man, he loved his music and enjoyed playing his organ, piano for church services, special occasions and for quiet evenings at home. Family will be accepting visitors at Serenity Funeral Home, Burin and in keeping with Covid restrictions a walk through visitation will take place on Saturday January 2, 2020, 2-4PM and 7-9PM.
The maximum number of people permitted in the visitation room at one time is 20 people. All visitors must sign in and sign out for contact tracing purposes, and masks must be worn at all times. Hand sanitizer will be provided and is to be used upon entering and exiting the building. No food or beverages are permitted in the building. Thanking you in advance for respecting the regulations. Together we can do this. In keeping with Jim's wishes cremation will follow the visitation and a Celebration of life will take place at a later date.

It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Vera Butt of Grand Bank announces her passing. Vera passed away at the Blue Crest Nursing Home in Grand Bank on Sunday, December 6, 2020, at the age of 79. CLUETT, Ernest
It is with great sadness that the family of the late ERNEST CLUETT of Garnish, NL, announces his passing. Ernest passed away at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre, Burin, on Thursday, December 17th, 2020 at the age of 90. Ernest was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Elsie Cluett, and sisters Susie, Flora, and Lindsey. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his wife, Bertha of 49 years; sons, Roger (Michelle), Garnish, Eric (Angela), St. John's, Ernest (Roxanne), Mount Pearl, daughters Joan Cribb (Ron), Garnish, Carol Lambert (Bruce), Burin; 9 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and a large number of relatives and friends.The Cluett Family will accept visitors at Peninsula Funeral Home in Creston South. In order to maintain social distancing and to follow the public health advisory of COVID 19, a private walk through visitation will take place on Friday, December 18th, from 2 pm - 4 pm and 7 pm - 9 pm. CLUETT, Mary Louisa (nee Grandy)
December 10, 2020
. With gratitude for her very long life, the family of Mary Louisa Cluett (nee Grandy) of Garnish NL announce her peaceful passing at the Blue Crest Nursing home in Grand Bank. Born in 1916. She is predeceased by her husband Herbert, infant son, daughter Florence Day, sons-in-law Jack Spencer, Don Hollett and Calvin Day, parents Hannah and Philip Grandy, brothers Fred and Tom Grandy and sisters Florence Cluett, Winnifred Grandy, and Gertrude Collins. Left with many lifetimes of wonderful memories are her daughters Jean Hollett and Gertie Spencer, sister Greta Hiscock, grandchildren Sandy Hollett (Brenda), Philip Hollett (Susan), Susan Hollett (Adrian Power), Robert Day (Joann), Scot Day (Caroline Kershaw), Colin Day, Dwayne Spencer, and Gus Spencer (Michelle), great-grandchildren Alex Tizzard (Steve), Megan and Katie Hollett (and their mother Heather), Matthew and Blake Power, Brandon Day, Gregory May (Ashley), Riley Spencer, Jack Spencer, great-great-grandchildren Max and Claire Tizzard, Landen and Parker May, and Remi Day, many special nieces and nephews and a large circle of family and friends. Whether you knew her as Gammy, Nan, Aunt Lou, Mom, Louisa or Mrs. Cluett, she loved you all. She was devoted to her family and her church. She lived a full independent life and was heavily involved in Garnish life. She was a wonderful baker, knitter, crocheter, and berry picker who traveled widely and relished a good game of Scat and a hot cup of tea. Louisa was a member of the St. Giles ACW for over 50 years and won the Garnish Days Dory Race not too long ago. Visitation will be on Friday, December 11 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Due to Covid 19 only a walk through visitation is allowed. Please sign in as you enter wearing a non-medical mask that covers the nose and mouth is mandatory and sanitize hands as you enter and leave. No food or beverages are permitted in the building. Funeral service will be held at the Chapel at Serenity Funeral home in Burin on Saturday, December 12 at 12pm, by Invitation only followed by interment at St. Giles Cemetery. It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Donald Coombs Jr. of Terrenceville announces his passing. Donald passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at the age of 46. It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Michael J. Drake of Fortune announces his passing at sea on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at the age of 48. Angela passed away at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at the age of 61. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are her sister, Carol Ann Lake of Burin; nephew Kirk Lake (Lenore) of Burin; great nephew Tyler and great niece Brittany; plus a large circle of extended family and friends. Angela was predeceased by her parents Joseph & Maurina Grandy; brother-in-law Keith Lake; nephew Kevin Lake. GRANDY, James Roland
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce that Jim (James Roland Grandy) passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Saturday, December 5th. Born August 11, 1941 in Burin, Newfoundland, Jim was the eldest child of Cecil and Gertrude, brother to Brenda (Al, deceased) and Wanda (Peter). He was deeply proud of his Newfoundland heritage. Predeceased by his first wife Doreen Ellen Grandy with whom he had two children, Glenn (Maya) and Sheila (David). Jim is survived by his loving wife Mary. Jim and Mary celebrated over 35 years of marriage and were always true and devoted to one another. They enjoyed gardening, golf, travelling, family and a vast group of friends. Mary will miss Jim every day until they are together again forever. Jim is also survived by his two granddaughters Clancy (Pat) and Alexandra (Andrew). Jim was a "favourite" and deeply loved son in law to Wavey Hyde. Jim spent his entire career in the Canadian Food and Grocery Industry where he forged countless friendships over the years. One in particular was his lifelong friendship with Jim Yeaman. Jim will be missed by his nieces and nephews and his many friends, one in particular which developed later in Jim's life was his brother-like friendship with Walt McKechnie, their special bond will be remembered always. Glenn and Sheila would like to express their sincere gratitude to Mary for her endless love and care that Mary provided our Dad from the day they met. The entire Grandy family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the Health Care workers and services that cared for Jim during his time of need. We cannot express how much of a difference this made to Jim, thank you. As per Jim's wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at a later date. Passed peacefully away at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre on Friday, December 25, 2020, Carol Kay Harding of Epworth age 68 years. Predeceased by her parents Abram and Verlie Harding, brothers Freddie & Isaac. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories sister Maxine (Harold) of St. Lawrence, brother Melvin (Gail) of Mooring Cove, sister-in-law Elizabeth of Epworth, caregivers Lexie Darby, Gail Harding and Elizabeth Harding, special friend June lundrigan, also, a large number of nieces, nephews & great nieces, great great nieces & other relatives and friends. Passed peacefully in the presence of her loving sisters on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at the Health Sciece Centre, St. John's, Paulette Mary Johnston in her 65th year. She now will be at peace with her parents, Kevin & Pearl Johnston; her baby brothers Kevie and Robert; grandparents, Felix and Blanche Johnston & Jerome and Catherine Hackett. LAPSTRA, Cora
It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Cora Lapstra surrounded by family on December 10th, 2020, in her 84th year. Cora Lapstra was predeceased by her loving husband Meindert (Mack) Lapstra and parents Benjamin and Ida Hillier. Loving mother of Brant (Moria), Ben (Lorelle). Proud and loving Nanna to five beautiful grandchildren Brittany (Ryan), Brandon (Anne), Jenna, Megan & Krista. Adoring great-Nan to Bryson and Rayleigh. Loving sister to George (Jessie), Carrie (Ches), Lovey (Lance) & Olive (Eli) and the extended Lapstra family. She leaves behind an abundance of nieces and nephews, and was fondly known as "Coco" or "Nan" to so many. Cora was born on Brunette Island, Newfoundland where the family was later resettled to Grand Bank, Newfoundland, she later moved to Toronto where she met her soulmate Mack. Together they built a beautiful cottage which will be treasured by the family for years to come. Cora had a beautiful, dynamic personality and the most amazing quit-wit and sense of humour, the stories fill our hearts with so much joy and laughter. We will miss her always but she will be in our thoughts forever. Due to COVID-19, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. MAVIN, George Thomas (Tom)
It is with broken hearts that the family of the late George Thomas (TOM) Mavin of Fortune announces his passing. Tom passed away at the Blue Crest Home in Grand Bank on Monday, December 21, 2020, at the age of 83. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his wife Nora of 51 years; sons, Michael (Kimberley) Mavin of North Carolina, Glen Mavin of Fortune; stepson, Terry (Cathy Follett) Chant of C.B.S.; sisters, Vera Strickland, Millie Collier, Frances (Charles) Thornhill, Marjorie (Charles) Penwell, Cynthia (Mark) Conlon; five grandchildren, Nicole, Kendra, Erica, Blake and Luke; plus a large circle of extended family and friends. ROUL, Columbus
It is with broken hearts that Alice, Eldon and family announce the passing of COLUMBUS ROUL on December 3, 2020 age 74 after another courageous battle with cancer. Born in Burin on March 3, 1946 to Annie and John Roul and raised in Webbers and later in St. Lawrence. Clum was the youngest boy of 9 children. Clum loved watching most sports including his beloved Montreal Canadians, Toronto Blue Jays and hometown Laurentians. He also enjoyed trivia and playing accordion especially on Saturday mornings. Leaving to mourn with a life time of wonderful memories are his loving wife of 46 years Alice, son and best friend Eldon (Lynn Saunders & Fidel), sister Susan Turpin, brother Clyde Roul (Thelma), brother Johnny Roul (Pat), members of the extended Roul, Slaney and Loder families, along with a large circle of friends and 5 special international students. Clum is predeceased by his parents Annie and John Roul, parents in-law Pauline and Alonzo Slaney, sister Selena Fitzpatrick (Paddy), brother Ken Roul (Marion), sister Mary Miller (Ned), brother Louis Roul, sister Violet Ann Roul, brother in law Don Turpin, nieces Adele Turpin, Selena O'Keefe, Kaitlyn Allen, nephews Billy Roul, Michael Sheppard, Andrew Drake and Brad Slaney. The Roul Family will be accepting visitors at at Wisemans Funeral Home, Burin on Friday and Saturday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. In order to maintain social distancing and to follow the public health advisory of COVID 19, this will be a walk through visitation. A maximum of 20 people at any one time permitted. Everyone is asked to sign the contact tracing sheet upon entering the church and masks are required. Please note that there is no food permitted in the building. There will be a prayer vigil on Sunday evening, December 6th at 7pm at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in St. Lawrence. It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Arthur Saunders of Marystown announces his passing. Arthur passed away at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Center in Burin on December 15, 2020 at the age of 79. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of George Henry Slaney of Point May, a beloved husband, father, pop, great grand pop, brother and uncle. He passed peacefully away at his home surrounded by his loving family on December 29, 2020, at the age of 73. Leaving to mourn is the love of his life Bernadette, sons Chris, Jim, Eugene (Antonia), Chad (Sarah), and George Jr. (Megan), daughters Gale (Tony) and Angela (Tyrone); grandchildren Danielle, Hilary, Robert, Laura, Jordan, Brittany, Brooke, Eugene Jr., Madison, Lincoln, Matthew, Noelle, Jonah and Jacob; great grandchildren Charlie, Emmy, Val, Dahlia, Fae, Pasley, Jordan Jr., Logan, Xander, Lilly, Hannah, and soon to be born baby Coffey; brothers Hubert (Shirley), Ron (Jenny), sisters Marion, Margaret (Les), Blanche (Loyola), and sister in law Marie. George dearly loved his family and was happiest when the house was full. Many late nights were spent sitting at the kitchen table with family and friends listening to him tell stories of days gone by and jokes that made them laugh until they cried. He liked celebrating all of life's adventures with those he loved. He enjoyed history, hunting, fishing and was an avid reader. His strength and courage were that of a bear and he faced every hardship with a wonderful sense of humour. George's witty intelligence and kindness left a mark on the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered and missed until end of days. The family would like to extend a special thank you to community health nurse, Kim West, who took wonderful care of George and responded tirelessly to all his family's questions and concerns. It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Jacqueline Whelan of Mooring Cove announces her passing after a courageous battle with cancer. Jacqueline passed away at her home in Mooring Cove on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at the age of 55.
