Burin Peninsula Obituaries

The area includes from Terrenceville on down to Grand Bank, over to Lamaline, St. Lawrence, Burin, Marystown and down the Peninsula again to Boat Harbour. All the communities are not named but serves the whole of the Peninsula.

 

BELBIN, Thomas James
Passed peacefully away on February 28, 2021 in the presence of his loving family, Thomas James Belbin, aged 95 years, formerly of Jerseyside, Placentia. Predeceased by his wife, Ellen, and by his son, Gary. Leaving to mourn are his daughter, Cathy of Mount Pearl, sons Raymond (Brenda) of Kelowna, B.C., Glen (Dee Anne) of Mount Pearl, and Thomas, Jr. (Elizabeth) of St. John's, daughter-in-law Lynn of Kelowna, B.C., sister Emma of Toronto, Ontario, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and extended family and friends. Tom was born in Grand Bank and moved to Argentia in 1942 to work at the Argentia Naval Base, where he worked until his retirement in 1981. In the years that followed, Tom enjoyed rural life at the family cabin at Hodgewater Line, where the pursuits included tending to the gardens, the cutting of wood, numerous projects, and generally enjoying the outdoors with his family. We are grateful for a life well lived. We also extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Salvation Army Glenbrook Lodge for their compassion and wonderful care to our father. BRENTON, Thomas
It is with broken hearts, and profound sadness that the family of the late businessman Thomas Brenton of Marystown, NL, announces his passing at The Marystown Retirement Centre on February 5, 2021 at the age of 85.
He leaves to mourn his sisters Susie Drake (John) and Jacqueline Abbott (Allister); brother Alan Brenton (Dianne); sisters-in-law Mary Brenton, Nina Brenton, Ann Lynch, and Sybil Turpin; special nephew Jack Brenton (Jeanita) and family; and a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loyal customers. Thomas was predeceased by his parents Jack and Donalda; brothers Aloysious, Patrick, Eugene, Wayne; and sisters Joan, Eva, Marcella.
Thomas' love for his gardens was as great as his love for music, for which he was well known and admired. He lived his life in such a way that afforded many the pleasure of knowing him profoundly. He never met a stranger and was always up for a friendly chat. Thomas fought his cancer with the same quiet determination with which he lived his life. We would like to send a special thank you to the caring and incredible staff at The Marystown Retirement Centre. In accordance with his wishes, a cremation has taken place, and there will be no public visitation. A family celebration of his life will take place at a later date. He will be dearly missed. BRYDE, Joseph "Freeman"
It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Joseph "Freeman" Byrde of Marystown (formerly of Terrenceville) announces his passing. Freeman passed away at the Blue Crest Home in Grand Bank on Friday, February 19, 2021 at the age of 91. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his wife Mary of 68 years; sons, Will Byrde (Carolann) of St. John's, and Rodney Byrde of Marystown; daughters, Melinda Hatcher (Emmanuel) of Marystown, Ada Hickey (Charles) of Terrenceville, Daphne Matthews (Robert) of Burin, and Kelly Byrde of Marystown; 16 grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren; sister, Melita Hynes of English harbor East; plus a large circle of extended family and friends. It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Theresa Drake of Little Bay announces her passing. Theresa passed away at her home in Little Bay on February 17, 2021 at the age of 58. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are her husband Brian of 28 years; 4 daughters, Charlene Rose (Brian) of Alberta, Misty-Dawn Drake (Jonathan Corbett) of CBS, Chantelle Kelly (Chris) of Alberta, and Tiffany Drake (Suzanne Lust) of Alberta; brothers, William Cheeseman (Mildred) of Marystown, John Cheeseman (Barb) of Marystown, and Patrick Cheeseman (Rose) of Ontario; sisters, Madeline Cheeseman of Marystown, Elizabeth Cheeseman of Marystown, Joan Legge (Hughie) of Burin, Marion Richards of Ontario, Roseanna Cheeseman (Peter Williams) of Ontario and Bernice Hickman of Alberta; plus a large circle of extended family and friends. Passed peacefully away at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Center in Burin on Thursday, February 18, 2021, GEORGE FUDGE of Grand le Pierre at the age of 84. Left with broken hearts and a lifetime of wonderful memories are his wife Georgina of 61 years; son, Robert (Irene), daughters, Christine (Pat), Elizabeth (Leo), Maureen (Tom), Evelina (Pat), and Jackie (Kevin); an abundance of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter who loved their grandfather's sense of humor and loving ways. Also leaving to mourn are his sister, Christine Dewolfe (Philip) of Nova Scotia; brother, Peter Fudge (Sheila) of Nova Scotia; and brother-in-law, Darel Debaie of Nova Scotia. George was predeceased by his parents, John and Elizabeth Fudge; parents-in-law, Louis and Mary Vaslett; sister, Tina Debaie; son-in-law, Patrick Myles; infant grandchildren, Janeva and Jalen. It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of the late Roy Victor House of Grand Bank announces his peaceful passing at his residence in Grand Bank on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at the age of 80. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Margaret of 49 years; daughters, Leona Savoury (Trevor) of Grand Bank, Loretta Stacey (Donald) of Point May and Royseana House (Tim) of Grand Bank; sisters, Effie Hoyland and Gladys Williams (Jack); brothers, William House (Linda), Nicholas House (Phyllis), Randolph House (Donna), Junior House (Helen) and Cyril House (Jenny); 8 grandchildren, Christopher Savoury (Candace), Tiffany Mullins (Justin), Savannah Baker (Zach), Santana Baker, Morgan Baker, Blake Stacey, Shelby Stacey and Bella Stacey; 4 great-grandchildren, Farryn Savoury, Noah Savoury, Finley Mullins and Jesse Mullins; special niece, Elizabeth Baker (Arthur); plus a large circle of relatives and friends. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Susie Janes announces her passing on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at the Corner Brook Long Term Care Facility at the age of 82 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her husband of 62 years Dolph Janes; children: Rozanne (Daniel) Ryland, Terry (Rhonda) Janes and Nancy Janes; grandchildren: Mark, Rebekah (Mitchell), Heidi, Olivia (Conrad), Katie (Craig), Nicholas and Alicia; great-grandchildren: Tristan and Charlotte; sister Georgina Burton (Clyde); sisters-in-law: Emma Sheppard, Mary (Harry) Reid, Glenda (Terry) Tilley, Elaine Janes and Yvonne Janes; brothers-in-law: George Gordon (Emily) and Jerry Locke (Paulette); special cousins Gertrude Moulton and Gerald Cluett; special friends: Daphne (Abe) Pittman and Dallas Leroux; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many neighbours and friends. Due to Covid-19 Government regulations a private family visitation will be held at Fillatre's Funeral Home, 10 Clinic Drive, Deer Lake. A private funeral service will be held at the Salvation Army Citadel, Deer Lake on Friday, February 12 at 2:00 p.m. with Majors Jeff and Shannon Howard officiating. Due to limited numbers the funeral service will be by invitation only. The service will be livestream on Deer Lake Salvation-Army Facebook page. Interment to follow at Deer Lake Interdenominational Cemetery, Wights Road. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Salvation Army Citadel, the Parkinson's Society, the Gideons or to a charity of one's choice.

KELLY, Christopher David
It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Christopher David Kelly of Edmonton, AB (formerly of Marystown) announces his passing. Christopher passed away at University Hospital in Edmonton, AB on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at the age of 37. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his mother, Gertie Connolly (George) of Gander; father, Denis Kelly (Madeline) of Marystown; sisters, Shanna Kelly (Kevin) of Bowmanville, ON, and Melissa Kelly of Corner Brook; nephews, Jayden, Beckham, and Jayce; special Aunt Margie & Uncle Jerry of Marystown; special Great Aunt, Nellie Kelly of St. Lawrence; plus a large circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends. KING, Lillian Florence
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lillian Florence King (known to some as Lillian Francis) of Marystown on Thursday, February 25, 2021, at the age of 88. Lillian, the daughter of the late Hannah and Emmanuel Keeping, was born and raised in Boat Harbour, NL. She was a woman who took great joy in the simplest of life's pleasures. Her warm-hearted personality and undeniable sense of humor and wittiness were contagious to everyone she met. Leaving to mourn with precious memories are her three daughters Effie(Allan), Mary (Brent), and Gladys (Cyril), and four sons Winston(Beverly), Melvin, Albert (Mary), and Furlen (Cindy). She was a loving Grandmother to 18 grandchildren and to numerous great-grandchildren. Lillian is predeceased by her husband, Stanley; daughter, Christine; sister, Mabel; and brother, George.
"God looked around his garden and he found an empty place. He then looked down upon this earth, and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. God's garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, and the hills were hard to climb, so he closed your weary eyelids, and whispered "Peace be thine." It broke our hearts to lose you Nan, Mom, and Grandmother, but you didn't go alone. For part of us went with you today when God called you home." Her warmth, kindness, laughter, and love will be eternally missed.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Due to COVID restrictions, a graveside funeral service will be held at a later date. Douglas passed away at his home in English Harbour East on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at the age of 76. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Nancy Pike of Burin (formerly of Creston) on Sunday, February 28, 2021 in her 77th year. Leaving to mourn with loving and precious memories husband Frank of 35 wonderful years of Marriage; sister Margaret Hillier, brother Walter Brushett; sisters-in-law Verlie Farewell (Charles), Hattie Foote and a large circle of nieces and nephews plus a large circle of other family and friends. Predeceased by parents George and Evangeline Brushett; brothers Chesley, Ernest and Richard, sister Susan Welsh, sister-in-law Margaret Beasley, mother-in-law Thursa Pike. Due the Covid 19 restrictions there will be a private family service at Hope and Faith Salvation Army Citadel, Creston. STRICKLAND, Gordon Frank
It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Gordon Frank Strickland of Lamaline announces his passing. Gordon passed away at the Dr. S Beckley Health Care Centre in Grand Bank on Monday, February 1, 2021, at the age of 55. Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his wife Renee of 7 years; step-son, Aaron Jubinville (Aimie) of Guelph, ON; sisters, Diane Drake (Hubert), Brenda Walsh (Bill), Lisa Marks (Ralph); brothers, Walter Strickland (Gail), John Strickland (Marion) and Dennis Strickland. Special aunt, Lucy King of Fortune. Plus a large circle of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Archibald and Eileen Strickland; brother, Archibald Strickland Jr. The Strickland Family will be holding a private family viewing at Wiseman's Funeral Home in Fortune on Friday, February 5th, 2021. Cremation to follow. A Grave Side Service will take place at St. Mary's Anglican Cemetery in Lamaline at a later date. In Gordon's memory donations may be made to The Strickland Family, or flowers gratefully accepted. It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of the late Shirley Bernice Warren of Grand Bank announces her passing at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre on Sunday, February 28, 2021 at the age of 85. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her daughters, Dorothy Harvey of Grand Bank, Maxine Harvey (Freeman) of Grand Bank and Darlene Mews of Alberta; brother, John Tiller; 9 grandchildren, Darlene McFadyen (John), Ashley Harvey, Shirley Brake (Greg), Norman Harvey (Susan), Dwayne Harvey (Kerry Lynn), Clyde Hillier, James Hillier, Corey Mews Jr. and Veronica Mews; plus a large circle of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, relatives and friends. Shirley was pre-deceased by her husband, Clyde Warren; parents, Job and Florence Tiller; sister, Rowena Nurse; brother, Merrill Tiller; son-in-law, Norman Harvey.
