ZWICKER, JOSIE ESTHER
(September 5, 1923 - September 19, 2016)
Zwicker, Josie Esther
- passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the Halifax Infirmary Q E II site on Monday September 19, 2016. Born in Garnish Newfoundland on July 5, 1923. Josie was the daughter of Martha (Adams) and William Grandy. Josie was married to George on July 19, 1947 in Western Shore Lunenburg County. They had a happy marriage for almost 50 years until George's death in June 1996. They raised two children from their home built by George in Spryfield. Josie was a wonderful wife and mother who worked hard both at home and in all of her endeavours. She loved spending time with people and went out of her way to help others. She was an active member in her UCW groups in both St. Paul's United Church and at Woodlawn United Church. She was a dedicated member of the Order of Eastern Star and held many positions in her local chapters. She greatly enjoyed the companionship but especially the efforts each group made to help those in need. They loved camping and after trailering for many years built a family cottage on Little Mush A Mush Lake. The building and the many years with family and friends spent at the cottage was a true joy for her. Her Newfoundland traits rarely let her sit down. She was always on the move and she used to say she didn't know how to relax, always finding something that needed to be done, fixed or a new knitting project started. Josie was dedicated to her family and was a stay at home Mum until her kids were old enough to fend for themselves. At that point she went back to work at Simpson Sears where she spent her early years after her move from Newfoundland. Along with the work she made many life time friends.
Josie is survived by her sister Martha Dunsworth (Sarnia Ont.) her children; Barry (Shirley) and Janice (Mike) She was loved by all her grandchildren; Greg (Krista), Michael (Jen), Andrew (Kelly), Natalie (Fraser) and Melissa (Blair). She had eight great grandchildren; Jenna, Alexander, Zachary, Lucas, Hunter, Riley, Axl and Kaden. Josie was predeceased by her sisters Rose and Pearl and her loving husband George. The family wishes to express many thanks to the nurses and staff of section 7.2 QE11 hospital for the care and compassion during her stay in the hospital. Thanks to Dr. Creighton of the Woodlawn Medical clinic was her long term Doctor after moving to Dartmouth. Mum lived in Parkland at the lakes for 2.5 years where she made new friends and was always thankful for the great care the Parkland team provided. Visitation will be held at Mattatall's Funeral Home at 217 Portland Street Dartmouth on Thursday, September 22, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. A celebration of Josie's life will be held on Friday September 23, at 1:00 p.m. in Woodlawn United Church 54 Woodlawn Road Dartmouth, will be officiated by Rev. Phillip Kennedy. A reception will follow in the Woodlawn Fellowship Hall. Josie was a generous giver to her church and a supporter of the Accessibility Project. If you wish to make a donation in her memory you may choose The Accessibility Fund of Woodlawn United Church or one that is meaningful to you.
