Genevieve (Jenny) Claire Gillis
, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday Jan. 1, 1999, in the R. K. MacDonald Nursing Home, in Antigonish, where she was a guest for the past four years. She was a former resident of Bell Street, Glace Bay. Born in Carbonear, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late John and Sarah (Tracey) Dinn. She was a practical nurse by trade and volunteered with the Red Cross during the Second World War. While residing in Glace Bay she was a member of St. Anne's Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Charles Gillis in 1981, two brothers, John and Ronald, two sisters, Margaret (Maggie) and Mary. Visitation for Mrs. Gillis will be in the V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation or charity of choice.

Robert Edgar Dearing
, 97, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of Kitchener Street, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at the home. Born in Carbonear, Nfld., he was a son of the late Henry and Eliza (Vaters) Dearing. He retired from the Open Hearth Dept. of Sydney Steel. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, Grandview Congregation. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by six daughters, Mary (Tom) Mercer, Sydney, Julia Patterson, Kentville, Florence Trudell, Carol Tinney, Liza O'Brien, Louise Kirkwood, all of Toronto; four sons, John, Sydney, Melvin, Sydney, Gideon, Toronto, Harry, Barrie, Ont.; 42 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his wives, Julie Osborne, Jane Bungay, Bertha Myatt and Hilda Dean, four sons, Arthur, Robert, Gordon and David in infancy, two sisters and two brothers. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will take place in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, Alexandra Street, Sydney, Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999 at 2 p.m. with Clarence MacGillivary officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date.

, 83, a resident of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at her son's home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Grand Falls, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Gillard) Wheeler. She was the owner/operator of the Victoria Haven Home for the Aged of 140 Main St., Glace Bay and was a pioneer in the nursing home field. Mrs. Ferguson is survived by one daughter, Joan Morrison, Glace Bay; two sons, William (Marilyn) MacLeod, Glace Bay and Fred (Jo) MacLeod, Abbotsford, B.C.; one sister, Lilly (Moore), Springdale, Nfld.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, William in December 1998, four brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, Thursday, Jan. 21 from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held in the funeral home chapel 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Peter J. Mullet
80, Upper Leitches Creek
Peter John Mullet
, 80, a resident of Upper Leitches Creek, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at the Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines. Born in Greenspond Nfld., he was the son of the late Stanley and Elizabeth (Green) Mullet. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Royal Canadian Navy as a chief petty officer. He was employed as the Greens superintendent at the Seaview Golf Club in North Sydney until his retirement. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 19. He is survived by one sister, Nina (Mrs. Fred Smeaton), Gander, Nfld. and many nieces and nephews. He was also truly loved and will be deeply missed by the Fitzgerald family, John and Michael, Toronto, Harold, B.C., Roddie, Brampton, Ont., Jimmy, Rodney, Ont., Colleen Leet and Trish Graham, both of Sydney. He was predeceased by three sisters, Alice, Emily and Hazel and two brothers, Chester and Frank. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will take place Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating. Burial will take place in Calvin United Church Cemetery, Upper Leitches Creek. Memorial donations can be made to the Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines.

Goldie Catherine Burke
81, Mount Pearl, Nfld.

The death of Goldie Catherine Burke, 81, occurred at St. Claire's Hospital, St. John's, Nfld. Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999. Born in Shelburne, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Fred and Catherine (Acker) Purdy. Surviving to mourn her loss are two daughters, Gloria (Richard) Pearson, Virginia Downer; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Doris MacLennan, Sydney Mines; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry P. Burke, three brothers and two sisters. A committal service will be held in Shelburne at a later date.
