COURTNEY, Robert
Published: August 07, 2021
Cape North

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Courtney, 69, who passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil's Harbour. Born March 23, 1952 in Burnt Islands, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Robert and Sarah (Hardy) Courtney. He loved to be on the sea, from his early steamship days to his later years commercial fishing. He was founding member of the NOSFA, advocating for local fishing and making great friends along the way. He remained loyal to the organization until he could no longer. He could always be found phone in hand chatting about anything and everything, with a story to tell and an ear to listen. As much as he loved fishing, what he loved the most was spending time with his grandchildren and being a Grampy.

Robert is survived by Louise, his partner of 31 years, and the children and grandchildren they shared together; daughter, Trena (Mitch) and their children, Lily, Mary, and Jimmy; son, Russell (Marika) and his daughter, Mya. He also leaves behind his daughters, Lori (Jason) and their children, Jason, Josh, and Emma, Sherry (Scott) and their children, Aiden and Ryder, Carla (Gavin) and their children, Aubree and Nathan, son, Raymond. Robert is also survived by his sister, Deanna (Tom) and their children, Heather and Hillary; nephew, Scott, and special aunt, Clara, who he adored. Besides his parents he was predeceased by sisters, Marilyn and Florence, and nephews, Godfrey and Peter.

On behalf of the family, we would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the nursing staff of Buchanan Memorial Hospital for taking care of and making his stay the last few months as comfortable as possible. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, August 10, at 1 p.m. at the Aspy Bay United Church, with Rose Mary Algar officiating. Due to Covid restrictions seating inside will be limited. All are welcome to tune in to 97.1 FM once seating is full. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com

HINKS, Barbara Pearl
Published: September 02, 2021

It is with profound sorrow that that the family of Barbara Pearl Hinks announce her passing on August 25, 2021. She was born September 13, 1921 in Portland, Newfoundland, to parents Jessie and George Curtis. Her father drowned while she was very young and she was later raised with her mother and stepfather, Dan Hunt.

Barb married Norman Hinks in 1944. They lived in Port aux Basques and later North Sydney. Barb moved to Lower Sackville to live with her daughter Shirley following Norm's death, and then to Melville Lodge in 2018.

Barb died a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday. She was fortunate to be able to have visits (long-delayed by Covid-19) with her youngest great-grandchildren shortly before her death. She is survived by children, Shirley (John) O'Neill, Wayne (Tippi) Hinks and Lewis (Valerie) Hinks; grandchildren, Johnny O'Neill, Christopher (Donna) Brown, Angela Malay, Stacey (Dirk) Hinks, Leah (Craig) Alison and Ian Hinks; by great-grandchildren, Tyler, Hannah, Marin, Isabelle and Maya and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother and sister, Norman Hunt and Shirley Musseau. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman Hinks, grandson, Mark O'Neill and infant daughter, Caroline, and also by siblings and step-siblings, Marion, Floss, Gord, Irene, Dorothy, Dan, Llewellyn, Jenny, Eva, Daisy and Adeline.

Her kind heart and generous spirit showed no bounds, nor did her baking skills. She could make chocolate chip cookies worth fighting over and always made sure to leave out a key ingredient when sharing the recipe. Shopping trips with her daughter were always a marathon affair and a wonderful time. She enjoyed sharing a meal with her extended family and loved having one of them drop by for lunch. She was known for her housekeeping talents, which, sadly, have not been passed on to all her children.

Experiences in her childhood taught her the value of treating everyone fairly, and she followed this principle in her treatment of family and others. She was very active in St. John's Anglican Church in North Sydney, serving many years with the ACW, and participating in various church groups. After moving to live with Shirley and John, she attended St. John the Evangelist Church in Middle Sackville. She supported a wide range of charities with regular donations. Thanks to the caring staff at Melville Lodge, who were kind and helpful despite challenging Covid-19 demands. Donations may be made to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, or a charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home in Lower Sackville. Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on September 17, 2021 at St. John's Anglican Church in North Sydney. Interment in Lake Side Cemetery will follow the service. Covid-19 protocols will be followed. Online condolences may be made at www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com
