BRADBURY, Norman
Published: October 09, 2021

We are saddened to inform friends and family of Norman Bradbury, Indiantown, FL that he left us on October 3, 2021. Born March 3, 1934 in Bareneed, Newfoundland. Norman remained proud of the fact he was born British in the then colony of Newfoundland. In the late 1930's, Norman, his sister Doreen and parents, William and Elsie (Turley) Bradbury, moved to Whitney Pier. Brother Bill was born a few years later. Sadly, Norman was predeceased by this immediate family.

As a young man, Norman was a keen sportsman involved in baseball, rugby and long-distance running. Norman was also an avid outdoorsman and adventurer. In the early 1960's Norman, along with a close-knit group of friends completed two major hikes through the middle of the Cape Breton Highlands before the existence of marked trails. The first, crossing from Cheticamp East to Ingonish. The following year, a gruelling 70-mile hike from Margaree north to Big Intervale. Norman was the last surviving member of this life-long group, who shared a love of adventure, music and poetry, especially "The Cremation of Sam McGee", recited with a fine scotch in hand. A graduate of Sydney Academy, his early career as an accountant at Dosco was short-lived as the sporting life beckoned. Norman's calling as a professional harness racing trainer and driver began at the Cape Breton Turf Club. After racing throughout the popular Maritime circuit, he moved his stables to the US. With his devoted wife Donna by his side, Stormin' Norman's reputation as a well-respected horseman grew as his bright red and gold silks crossed the finish line at racetracks throughout the northeast. The bulk of his racing career was spent at Monticello Raceway, retiring just four years ago.

Our "Normski" is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Donna (Caldwell) Bradbury; children, Grant (Sadie) Bradbury of Halifax and Diane Bradbury of Boularderie; grandson, Cale (Rucha) and great-granddaughter, Rose of Hamilton, ON. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including Heather (John) Ruttenberg of Jericho, VT. Burial to take place at a later date in Haverhill, MA. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

LONG, Alice
Published: October 30, 2021
North Sydney

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Alice Long on October 17, 2021 at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney. The months leading up to Alice's passing, she was surrounded by those she loved the most, her family and friends. Born on September 17, 1940, in Harbour Mille, Fortune Bay, NL, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Marie Pardy. Alice grew up in Little Bay East with her late grandparents, George and Alice Clarke. She was raised in the United Church. Alice learned to play the organ from her Aunt Lila at a young age.

After growing up in Little Bay East, Alice moved to North Sydney on her own at the age of 16. She made this move to stay with her late aunt and uncle, Martha and Reuben Clarke. Alice took on this new journey with courage and bravery. Alice then attended St. Joseph's High School which was an experience she treasured her whole life, often telling stories of what she learned from the nuns who taught her. She was a loyal employee to LeMoine's Grocery Store for many decades. She loved to go dancing at the Orange Lodge and other locations all over with her husband, Phil and friends. She always looked forward to her summer trips home to Newfoundland to spend time with her family. She also enjoyed going to Prince Edward Island every August for Old Home Week to watch the horse races and to enjoy a good lobster supper. In her down time, you could find her sitting in her favorite chair doing her word search books. Alice, also known as Allie by many, was known for her quiet and poised personality. Her children and grandchildren meant everything to her. She was always there to lend a helping hand and give heartfelt advice. Alice will be remembered for her work ethic, her story telling, her delicious cooking and her heart of gold.

Alice is survived by her children, Craig (Kim) Osborne, Janice Day and Allison Osborne; her grandchildren, Ryan, Nicole, Meagan, Colin, and Curt; her sisters, Dora Blagdon, Winnie (Hiram) Pope and Lila (Lloyd) May; and her brother, Chesley (Regina) Pardy. Besides her parents and grandparents, Alice was predeceased by her loving husband, Phillip Long; her brother, Sidney Pardy; and her granddaughter, Skye Amber. Alice loved the family she came from and the family she created.

Alice set an example for us all with her love and empathy for not only family but complete strangers that she would meet. We will honour her love for others and will continue to pass it on for generations to come. We will all miss you dearly in our everyday lives. We will carry the fond memories of our times together in our hearts forever. We love you. A service was not in Alice's wishes. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, The Salvation Army or The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul.
