BAILEY, Jessie Irene (Childs)

It is with heavy sad hearts that we announce the passing of a beautiful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Jessie Bailey, age 92, at home, on Tuesday, April 11, 2022. Born in Newfoundland on Oct. 11, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Lewellyn and Mary Jane Childs. She came to Cape Breton in 1946 and was married the late James Guy Bailey for 67 years before his passing in 2013.

Jessie is survived by her sons Lawrence (Yvonne) and Kevin, and daughters Elizabeth, Elaine, and Debbie (Gary Pyke). She also leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She had eight wonderful sisters, Melissa, Louise, Irene, (George), Mildred (Austin), Faye Ruby (Paul), Ruth (Angus), Nancy (Kirvy), four wonderful brothers Winston (Dot), Ben (Madonna), Austin (Lena), Lewellyn (Marlene), all originating from N.L. She was predeceased by her husband (Guy) son Butch wife (Lily) daughter Patty husband (Austin) two grandsons Jamie Bailey, Ricky Parsons, and son-in-law Joe Boutilier.

She was a member of the Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. Our mother was the back bone of the family. Many people and neighbours visited our home over the years. Mom would always greet them with a cup of tea and sweet. Special Thank you goes out to Tina Brown who been an awesome neighbour. Barbara Martin would entertain her at her home and chat about the Bailey family. Kim Bailey VON, granddaughter in-law who visited her in time of sickness. Also, to the homecare workers who were amazing to her. Jenny Cousins with her visits and talks. Pencie Granchelli, who visited her each week for her church envelope and chats. Dr. Michel McKeough who was her doctor for many years. Most important of all was her wonderful son Kevin who personally looked after her sickness with devotion, love, and caring. He was her special Angel. You were the most wonderful mother that anyone could ever have. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Her favorite Bible verse was; In my Fathers' house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you and when I come again. I will take you on to myself so that where I am you maybe also. John 14: 2-3.

Visitation for Jessie Bailey will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2022, from 1-3 p.m. in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A celebration of her life will take place at 3 p.m., in the funeral home, with Rev. Jackie Warren officiating. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com


CARTER, Eva "Leona"

Today an angel received her wings. Eva Leona Carter also known as "Nonnie" to family flew to heaven. Born in Francois, N.L., on July 29, 1939. Leona was the oldest child of Samuel James Carter and Emily Jane ( Coley) Carter, Fox Island, N.L. Leona was a woman with a rare faith living with disabilities that would kill a lesser soul. Her generous spirt and giving heart made those she met remember and love her. She was a volunteer for MacGillivary's Guest Home, Cardial Place and Loaves and Fishes. She always received praise and many awards for her cooking and shining kitchens. At age 75, she published a cook book "Cooking with Leona". All proceeds from that book went to the Resource Centre.

Leona is survived by her loving son Reginald Stewart Carter (Lorena) and her brother Samuel (Barbara), sisters Marjorie Carter, Minnie MacKeigan and Doris (Brian) Dean. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her niece Deborah MacKeigan, brother-in-law John G. MacKeigan. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church and on moving to Sydney she attended Christ the King faithfully, never missing a Sunday. We would like to thank Dr. Libbus and Dr. K. for all their care of Leona. Also Dr. Hall and all the staff of Harbourstone Enhanced Care for their care over the past five years.

There will be no visitation due to COVID-19. A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2022, at 11 a.m. at St. Bartholomew's Cemetery, Louisbourg, with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.foresthaven.ca


COTTER, Kenneth John

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother and uncle, Kenneth John Cotter on Monday, April 18, 2022, at home in Heart's Content, NL. He was born in New Pelican on Nov. 28, 1934. He was the son of the late William and Blanche (Palmer) Cotter. He was predeceased by his loving wife Carrie (Parsons), eldest daughter Gale Marr, Joe Scott who was like a a son, and his brothers James and Henry. He is survived by his wife of seven years Evelyn Smith, Heart's Content, NS; children Ken (Darlene), Sherry, Jim (Dorothy Donovan), Sabrina (David Phillipo) Strong and Sheryl (Duane) Duhamel; sister Olive Snow; sisters-in-alw Betty Cotter and Rose Cotter; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He moved to Port Hawkesbury, NS from Corner Brook, NL in 1962 and opened a hardware store. He then started a printing business, Straight Printing & Publishing on Granville Street in 1972, he moved his family to Glace Bay after purchasing Brodie Print Shop on MacLean Street. In 1981, he achieved his dream of owning his own newspaper when he published The Coastal Courier. He went on to publish two more community newspapers, The Northside Tribune and the New Waterford Community Press.

Ken loved his family very much and never let them do without. He always thought of his employees as "part of the family" and went above and beyond to make sure thay had what they needed, even if it meant he did without. He had such a huge heart, care and compassion for others and it showed. He and Carrie would take in kids that were experiencing troubles and gave them a safe place to stay, a warm meal, and love and support.

Celebration of Life Service was held at St. Mary's Anglican Church, Heart's Content on Sunday, April 24, 2022. Condolences may be sent to the family at Slade's Funeral Home, Carbonear, NL. sladesfuneralhome@gmail.com Burial will be held at a later date in Glace Bay, NS.
