BRENTON, Stuart Leonard

It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Stuart Brenton, age 60, on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, in Sydney. Born September 28, 1961, in Burin, Newfoundland, Stuart was the son of the late William Thomas and Gertrude Marion Brenton, whom he loved dearly. Stuart was a commercial fisherman for most of his life but spent some years as a roofer. He was the best back yard mechanic you'd ever meet. Stuart had a sense of humor that was unmatched and a laugh that was just as contagious as it was unmistakable. He was an amazing provider to his family and was loved by everyone who'd meet him. Stuart welcomed everyone with open arms and treated them as family.

Stuart is survived by his brothers, George, Sydney, and David, Burin, NL; son, Neil (Alicia); daughter, Angela (Cody); mother of his children, Darlene Koziel; grandchildren, Melanie, Carson, Kyla, Paiton/Leo, Bree and Avery; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and, nephews and his godchildren.

Visitation and funeral service to celebrate the life of Stuart Leonard Brenton will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Monday, February 7, 2022. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 12 to 3 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at 3 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Private family interment will take place at a later date. Covid protocols will be practiced at the service. Donations in memory of Stuart may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. MUNROE, Madeline Grace

It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Madeline Munroe, of Glace Bay, who passed away in Sydney, at the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Madeline was born in Twillingate, NL on Oct. 11, 1946, to Sidney and Hettie (Guy) Watkins and passed on Feb. 17, 2022.

Madeline worked for over 40 years with Scotiabank until her retirement in 2007. Madeline enjoyed picking blueberries, building puzzles, and playing Candy Crush and Sudoku. One of Madeline's favourite pastimes was reading. Once she picked up a book, she wouldn't put it down until it was finished. Madeline loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she adored. Madeline was a strong, caring person who could always be depended upon to lend an ear or a helping hand.

Madeline will be sadly missed by all that knew her. She leaves behind her children, Richard, Mark (Cindy) and Heather (William) Hartlen; grandchildren, Michael, Nichole, Robert, Matthew, Shannon, Callum and Sarah; great-grandchildren: Rylan, Lucas and Robert. She also leaves behind brothers: Howard (Brenda), Ken (Lorraine), Ben (Diane) and Hardy (Alisa); sisters, Doreen, Donna (Pat), Karen (Gerald) and Sherry, sister-in-law Dolena Brewster and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Madeline is predeceased by her husband James, her sister Joyce Batschkun, brothers-in-law, Sandy Brewster, Leroy MacRury, Art Batschkun and Gerald Granville; sister-in-law Ella Watkins and dear friend Edie MacDonald.

There will be a visitation held at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay on Feb. 23, 2022. From 2-4 and from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at The Salvation Army, 40 Union St., Glace Bay, on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2022, at 2 p.m. Proof of vaccination and masks are required. Seating at the church is limited to around 100. Livestream of the service can be viewed at Patten Funeral Home's Facebook page. A graveside service at St. Anne's Cemetery in Glace Bay will be announced at a later date. Memories may be shared with the family by visiting www.pattenfuneral.com   In lieu of flowers, donations in Madeline's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Red Cross. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the VON for their care over the last several months and to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Palliative care team for your kindness, care and compassion shown to both Madeline and her family in her final days. Special thanks are also extended to her niece, Charmaine Brewster, and her friends and neighbours for their support and assistance over the last few years.


RILES, Rita Alice North Sydney

It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Rita Alice Riles, at the age of 80, on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at the Northside General Hospital. Rita was born in Port Aux Basques on April 30, 1941, the daughter of the late George and Caroline (Osmond) Osmond. In her younger years she worked at National Sea Products and later the Cara Restaurant at the Marine Atlantic Terminal. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Northern Yacht Club. Rita loved a good game of darts, bingo and scratch tickets.

She is survived by her loving children, Marilyn (Joe) Hollingsworth, Terry (Joan) Riles, Sherry MacEachern, Lloyd (Angie) Riles, Shane (Lori) Riles, Bob (Felicia) Riles; daughter-in-law Joanne Williams; her step-children, Clyde (Leslie) Riles, Clifford (Carol) Riles, Genesta (Francis) Smith; her 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Lorraine (the late John) MacDonald, Masie (Carson) Warren; her brothers Albert (Ida) Osmond, Elias (Vicky) Osmond; also nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Roy Riles; her sisters, Myrtle, Sadie and Cavell.

At her request there will be no visitation or funeral service. A graveside service will be held at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney at a later date. Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary.
