ASHFORD, Gladys -- North Sydney

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt, Gladys Ashford, age 92, on Monday, September 5, 2022 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Diamond Cove, Newfoundland on April 2, 1930, Gladys was the daughter of the late Fred and Bertha (Cox) Blagdon. She travelled to North Sydney on a long liner at the age of fourteen to help with the care of her sister's children.

Gladys loved attending yard sales and flea markets on weekends. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney. Gladys is survived by her daughters, Pauline (Richard) Carroll, Karen Clarke (Johnny Morrell); sons, Jack (Darlene) Ashford and Donnie Ashford (Donna Smith); daughter-in-law, Johanna Ashford; sister, Eileen Keeping; several loving grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; also by her close friend, Nancy MacDonald. The family would like to thank the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home, especially at Joseph Hall, also the staff at the Emergency Department of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the care given to Gladys and the family. Besides her parents Gladys was predeceased by her husband, Russell Ashford; son, Garland Ashford; her grandson, Jason Ashford; great-grandson, Allen Carroll; sisters, Myrtle Rideout, Millie Jessome, Violet Pye, Flora Taylor and Annie Bennett; brothers, George, Freddie, Garland and Leslie Blagdon.

Visitation for Gladys will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service for Gladys will be held 2 p.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Debbie Fice officiating. COURTNEY, Eric -- Dominion

It is with great sadness that we the family of Eric Courtney, 77 of Dominion, NS, announce his passing on Saturday, September 3, 2022, on the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, NS, with his family at his side. Born in Goblin, Hermitage Bay, NL, he was the son of the late John and Annie Courtney. Eric worked in Food Services for 19 years at the Community, Hospital, Glace Bay before moving to the Regional, Northside, and New Waterford Hospitals, and later to Taigh Na Mara; for a total of 31 years

Eric immensely enjoyed working beside his staff and colleagues who grew to be lifelong friends. Eric also served for many years as Warden for the Church of Good Shepherd and volunteered with the C.P. Association as well as on various boards. Known for his big warm smile and welcoming embrace, Eric was a kind, loving husband and father who would do anything for his family and friends. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening and carpentry and was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

Eric will be sadly missed by all. Survived by his loving wife of 48 years Irene; son: Barry; daughter: Dawn (Duncan); brothers: Mark (Frances), Clayton (Myrtle), and Edgar (Barb); sister: Eileen; grandchildren: Brittany, Ben, Nicholas, and Cameron; nephews, nieces, and an extended circle of relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Eric was predeceased by his darling daughter, Sonya.

As per Eric's wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and compassion of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, NS. (902)849-4199. There will be no visitation and a private Interment will be held for family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or to a charity of one's choice. Special thanks and appreciation to the staff of 4C and Palliative Care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, for their outstanding care, kindness, and support in our time of need. FORD, Henry John 'Harry' -- Coxheath

Henry Ford
passed away in Palliative Care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, NS on Monday, September 5, 2022, at the age 70. Born in St. John's, NL, he was a son of the late Harry and Mary (O'Brien) Ford. While living in St. John's, he was a member of the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve Unit, HMCS Cabot, reaching the rank of Petty Officer First Class. During this time, he also served with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) 74 Golan Heights Signals Troop. After a career with Nav Canada Air Traffic Services, Henry retired to Coxheath, NS.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his infant son, Patrick. Henry leaves to mourn his wife of 42 years, Frances (Caines); sons, Mike and Andy, all of Coxheath; brothers, Brian (Helen), Foxtrap and Jim (Carly), St. John's; and sisters, Rosemary Ford, St. John's and Anne Ford, Airdrie, AB. Also left to mourn are his brother-in-law, Andy Caines (Cathie), Camperdown, NS; aunts, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends as well as good friends, Chris and Sharon Grainger, Len and Joan McMurrer and Scott and Sherry MacKay; and his fur buddy, Ozzy.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, St. John's.
