BARTER, Loretta (Fudge) -- Louisbourg Her family was her pride and joy and she enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her children and grandchildren who she loved dearly. She was an active member of St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church where she was part of the choir, a member of the ACW, as well as a Sunday school teacher for many years. Loretta enjoyed being involved in the bookclub, doing crafts, cooking (she was the best cook), going for her daily walks with her good friend, Shirley and going for Sunday drives after church with her soul mate Billy. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Eric and Nathan; father-in- law, George; and brother-in-law, Wallace. Visitation will take place Wednesday, April 12, 2023, in First United Church, Louisbourg, from 12-2 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the church at 2 p.m. with Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating. Interment will take place in St. Bartholomew's Cemetery. The funeral service will be livestreamed on the Sydney Memorial Chapel Facebook page. The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Hospice Cape Breton, as well as all the health care professionals that have helped Loretta over the last couple months. "Bill" CM, MD, FRCSC -- St. Ann's Bay, Cape Breton Bill spent his professional life as a rural general surgeon in St Anthony, NL. In the past he was President of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 2008. Recently he was Chairman of B.O.L.D. in Baddeck, NS. He loved his family, his work as a rural general surgeon in Northern Newfoundland and Labrador, and sailing on his Concordia Yawl, Tosca. Funeral to be held in St. Anthony, NL, at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 29, at St Mary's Anglican Church. Reception at B.O.L.D. in Baddeck, NS, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice. Online condolences may be left for the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com PECKHAM, Gordon -- New Waterford After moving to New Waterford, he was hired as a coal miner by, Dominion Coal Company in 1948. That same year, he married Marjorie Crane, of Belle Island, Newfoundland. They were happily married for 72 years. Gordie worked as a coal miner, mine electrician, and overman with DEVCO for 41 years. He loved all things Mira, including boating, horseshoes, ladderball, campfires, and a friendly card game. As soon as school was out, he took Marjorie and the kids to the bungalow. Whether at home or out on the Mira, the welcome mat was out, and the kettle was on. He played in the Salvation Army Band, was involved in the Orange Lodge and was an active member and treasurer of the Salvation Army Church, New Waterford until its closing. He volunteered to man the kettles in New Waterford every Christmas, and very few passed him by. Gordon was a long-time member of the board of the New Waterford Credit Union. He was a scout leader and a maker of back yard rinks. He was a gentleman and a sweetheart. Surviving are his children, Wayne (Linda), Albert Bridge, Lorraine (Keith Paddick), Edmonton, Alta., Joan (Ford Morey), Springdale, Nfld., Jean Grace, New Waterford, Blair (Donna), New Waterford, Donald (Debbie), Albert Bridge. Also missing their Papa are his 13 grandchildren, Shawna, Lee, Alisa, Tara, Chad, Walter, Sheldon, Vanessa, Natalie, Stephen, Jason, Aliesha, and Aimee; his 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lottie Baggs, Labrador. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie; brothers, Hayward and Anderson; sisters, Annie, Lillian and Myrtle; son-in-law, Walter Grace. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 9, at 11 a.m. with a Celebration of Life at 12 p.m., followed by a reception, all taking place in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Capt. Keith Barrett officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Cemetery. Memorial donations in Gordon's memory may be made to Salvation Army. Online condolences can be sent to the family by visiting: www.vjmcgillivray.ca PIEROWAY, Ellen Jane Jane is survived by her beloved husband, John Pieroway; sons, Danny (Deanna) Fitzgerald, Robert aka Bob (Ellen) Fitzgerald, Gary (Theresa) Fitzgerald, Steven Fitzgerald, John (Tracey) Pieroway, Claude (Deanna) Pieroway; daughters, Donna (Kevin) Slade, Lucy Fitzgerald, Sherry (Chris) Evans, Lisa (Ronnie) Gardiner, and Karen Pieroway. Also surviving are many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; brothers, George, Roy; and sister-in-law, Belle Piccott. Besides her parents, Jane was predeceased by brothers, Robert, Freeman, Arthur, and Bronson; daughter, Lynette; and grandson, Shane Hatcher. Cremation has taken place. Visitation for the late Jane Pieroway will be held Friday, April 14th, from 10 to 11 a.m., with service to follow in JM Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Burial will take place at a later date in Newfoundland. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com POOLE, Mervyn Watkins -- New Waterford Merv was a talented artist, musician and author; gifts that have been passed down the blood line to the following generations. I know he would be the first to thank the amazing staff at Maple Hill Manor, whose love and devotion to him, and to all in their care, made his last years so wonderful. On behalf of the whole family, I thank you all with all our hearts. He never wanted fuss so there will simply be a cremation, after which I will take him home and then to Pilley's Island and to Factory Cove. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to Maple Hill Manor or to Mental Health Research Canada. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford.
