AMBROSE, Lavinia "Betty"
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, November 5, 2019

Age 87, of Dartmouth, born October 21, 1932 in St. John's, Newfoundland, passed away at home peacefully on November 2nd after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, Warren and Elsie (White) McNeil; brother, Doug Clarke; and son, David. She is survived by her sister, Ivy; children, Derrick, Mark (Ardith), and Jennifer; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Betty moved to Halifax in the early 1950's, eventually settling in her home of over 50 years. She raised and cared for four children on her own by working at various retail jobs in Dartmouth. She was a born again Christian since her youth. Betty attended various churches throughout the years regardless of denomination. Her final church family was at Stevens Road Baptist Church. She shared her faith in practical ways by opening her home, welcoming people to her table, and giving to those in need. We, the family would like to thank friends past and present who visited, prayed, and provided support during our mother's illness. Also, much appreciation for the staff of 8.1 in the Halifax Infirmary QEII, the VON nurses, Northwood Home Care, Palliative Care in Halifax and Dartmouth, and those who tended to her overnight care.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses or Northwood Foundation. Visitation will be held in Stevens Road Baptist Church on Wednesday, November 6/6:30-8:30 p.m., and the Service of Remembrance, Thursday, November 7th at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow. BANFIELD, Eli John

Tuesday, July 28th, 1925 - Saturday, November 23rd, 2019

It is with great sadness that the family of Eli John Banfield, 94 of Bridgewater announces his passing on Saturday November 23, 2019 at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.

Born in Bay L'Argent, Fortune Bay, Newfoundland, Eli was the son of the Eli Banfield Sr. and Sarah (Thornhill) Banfield, and moved to Halifax in 1940. He began dory fishing with Captain Cleveland from Western Shore at age 15 on the MacDonald, then with Captain Atwood Parks on the Margaret B. Tanner and with Captain Perry Conrad on the Cape LaHave. Eli then went to at Fairview Round House looking after the steam engines and was also a waiter in the dining car on the C.N. train from Halifax to Montreal. He retired after 23 years working for Riverport Seafoods. Active within his community, Eli was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Middle La Have, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 24, Bridgewater for 44 years, and the LaHave River Ramblers Square Dancers for many years. He enjoyed music jams and seniors lunch at Sobeys.

Eli is survived by his wife of 69 years, Shirley (Walters) and son, Christopher Banfield (Jessica) of Blockhouse. He was predeceased by his parents and twin baby girls.

A graveside committal service for Eli will be held in Brookside Cemetery on Friday November 29th at 2pm. Rev. Willis Ott, officiating. BILLARD, John Howard "Jack"

Age 72, passed away on November 30, 2019, in Willow Hall. Jack was born in Port aux Basques, NL, on January 29, 1947. He was a son of the late John W. and Marjorie (Collier) Billard. Jack was truly a loving family man. He married his childhood sweetheart, Brenda, on December 21, 1968. He enjoyed the outdoors, be it fishing, hunting, gardening, or going for long walks. Jack spent 28 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force, retiring in 1995. After retirement, he and Brenda moved back home to Cape Breton. He loved the time he spent living there, where he and Brenda would sail the Bras D'or Lake on his sail boat.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of almost 51 years, Brenda; daughters, Angela (David) and Anita (Dwayne); his grandchildren, whom he cherished, James, Claire, and Brandon; and his sisters, Marilyn (Terry) and Nora. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Besides his parents, Jack was predeceased by his brothers, Douglas and Gordon; and his nephews, Ronnie and Darrell.

There will be a service celebrating Jack's life on December 21st at 2 p.m., in Calvin Presbyterian Church, Ashburn Avenue, Halifax, with reception to follow. Special thanks to the loving, caring staff at Willow Hall for taking such good care of Jack, right until the end of his journey with dementia.


BYRNE, Sister Theresa

Formerly Sister Jean Patrice
, 88, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died in St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish on November 5, 2019, in the 61st year of her Religious Life. Born in Cornerbrook, N.L., Sister Theresa was the tenth of 13 children of the late John Joseph and Mary Ann (McCarthy) Byrne. Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha on February 15, 1956, pronounced her first vows on February 15, 1958 and her perpetual profession of vows on August 15, 1961. Prior to entering the Congregation, Sister Theresa had obtained a diploma course in typing, shorthand and bookkeeping and was employed with Harmon Air Force Base, Stephenville, N.L., for four years. After her profession of vows, Sister's gifts were used for office work, homemaking, dietary, switchboard and medical accompaniment. She served in both institutions and smaller convents. In Nova Scotia, she served in Antigonish in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Bethany, St. Martha's Convent, and Martha Place/Mary's Court Parkland Antigonish. In Guysborough in St. Anne's Convent. In Cape Breton, Little Flower Institute, Sydney, St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace Bay, Villa Madonna, Bras D'or, St. Joseph's Convent Dingwall, Martha Community, Sydney. Sister Theresa also served at St. Michael's Hospital, Broadview, Sask., and St. Augustine's Seminary, Scarborough, Ont.

Sister Theresa was a prayerful person who participated in spiritual renewals in Pickering, Ont., St. Stephen Priory, Massachusetts, and Jesuit Centre, Guelph, Ont. She was also known for her great sense of humour and storytelling. Sister Theresa is survived by sister, Josephine Blocker of Rapid City, S.D. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Winnifred, Veronica Varuska, Mary Ann, Elaine, Dorothy Ryan and Alice; and brothers, John, and William. Margaret, Florence and Francis died in infancy. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.

The remains will be resting in Martha Place, Parkland Antigonish, beginning Friday, November 8th at 1:15 p.m. where a celebration of vigil will be held on the same day at 7 p.m. Liturgy of Christian burial will take place on Saturday, November 9th at 1:30 p.m. in St. Martha Chapel, Parkland, Antigonish. GALLANT, Cyril Joseph "Buddy"

Age 83 of Blockhouse, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 6, 2019, in Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in Benoit's Cove, N.L., he was a son of the late Alonzo and Elizabeth (Greene) Gallant. Cyril was a fishermen by trade until he retired. After retiring, he had many hobbies, some including card games, woodworking, especially building model boats, lighthouses and special gifts for family. He was a great storyteller and was always game for a road trip. He will be sadly missed and forever loved by his partner, Betty Fleet; daughter, Jamie Gallant; sons, Roger Janes and Paul (Jennifer) Janes; stepdaughter, Louann (Kirk) Rhuland; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Cyril was predeceased by his both parents; eight sisters; and two brothers, all from Newfoundland.

Honouring Cyril's wishes, after cremation, a graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, November 14th, in Western Shore Cemetery, Rev. James Haughn officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fishermen's Memorial Hospital Emergency Department. The family would like to thank the nurses in the emergency department of Fishermen's Memorial Hospital and Dr. Paul McAuley for taking good care of Cyril. HART, Cyril Edmund

Age 77, of Windsor, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, peacefully on Friday, November 1, 2019 in Hants Community Hospital, with his loving family by his side. Born in Horwood, N.L., he was a son of the late Susie and Stanley Hart. Cyril was a truck driver for many years, transporting liquid chlorine for Coastal Transport. He loved working in the woods, being outdoors and spending time with family and dear friends. Predeceased by his wife, Lottie Hart; brother, Reginald; brothers-in-law, Ron Freake and Ray Hodder; sister-in-law, Louise Hart. He will be deeply missed by his beloved companion, Ruthie Smith; loving children, Tiffany Revels (Norm), Trevor Hart (Virginia); stepdaughter, Lori Smith (Andrew); cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren; brother, Otto (Pauline); sisters, Louise Freake, Yvonne Eveleigh (Cyril), Effie Hodder; many nieces, nephews and extended family. A special thank you to Derrick and Terry and families for their continued support over the years. A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Oakridge Memorial Gardens. LEE, Shirley

Age 83, of Berwick, formerly of Dempsey Corner, Kings Co., passed away on Friday, November 8, 2019, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on August 3, 1936, in Belleoram, N.L., she was a daughter of the late Loran and Sophia (Belmore) Barnes. Shirley had worked in Accounting and Finance at Dupont Corporation, Montreal for many years, later helping her husband on the family farm. She enjoyed time spent curling.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Francis D. "Frank" Lee, Berwick; sisters, Winnifred Chedore and Gladys (Charlie) Bartlett, both of Spryfield; brothers, Melvin (Joyce) Barnes, Spryfield; Robert Barnes (Thelma Lycett), Bedford; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister, Mary (Michael) Adams; brother, Joseph Barnes; two infant brothers, Harold William and Loran Thomas; brother-in-law, Elgar Chedore.

There will be no visitation. A service in remembrance of Shirley's life will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, November 15th, in Christ Anglican Church, 238 Commercial St., Berwick, Rev. Mel Malton officiating, assisted by Rev. Father John MacPherson. A reception will follow in the church hall, with interment in Berwick Cemetery. Family flowers only. MAYO, Calvin Murdoch

Passed peacefully away and surrounded by love on November 18, 2019. Calvin was born in Burin, N.L. He completed high school in 1948 and moved to Halifax, where he worked at MT&T while attending the Maritime Business College. In 1951, he enrolled at Memorial University of Newfoundland and became a member of the Royal Canadian Navy Reserves Naval Training Division. In May 1959, Calvin earned his LLB Degree from Dalhousie University and in 1962 he was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland.

Calvin was a gentle, kind man who embraced life to the fullest. Among other activities, he treasured swimming, cycling, music and the arts, debating politics, and socializing with his friends and family. He was a constant advocate for his home province of Newfoundland and believed education was a key to the future, always encouraging this pursuit in others. Calvin grew up as the eighth son, in a family of 12 children.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Elizabeth; and his brothers, Roland, Samual, Gerald, Lohnes, Alfred, Lester and Fletcher. Calvin is lovingly remembered by his beloved sisters, Vermuda and Shirley (Eric); his brothers, Alfred (Jean) and Russel (Elizabeth); as well as, four generations of nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends. The family would like to give special thanks to Calvin's dearest friend, Heather, who has always been by his side and has provided unwavering support to the family, and especially to Christine. Thanks to Dr. Mountain and Dr. Glenny and to all staff at Arborstone Nursing Home, especially Liz, Melony, Ruth and Cathy. Finally, thank you to all of our friends and family who have helped us care for Calvin.

A celebration of Calvin's life will take place 11 a.m., on Tuesday, November 26th, in St. Matthews United Church, 1479 Barrington St., Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission or St. Matthews Outreach Program.


MULLINS, Randell Wilfred "Ran"

Age 68 of Dartmouth. It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Randell, on Wednesday November 20, 2019. Born in Harbour Breton and raised in Little Bay West, N.L., Randell was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend. Predeceased by his parents, Ralph Mullins Senior and Ethel Maude (Harding) Mullins. Survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Olive; children, Miranda and Jeff; grandchildren, Cameron and Ricky. Randell was an avid outdoorsman who took great pleasure in spending his leisure time hunting, fishing and sharing stories about his many adventures. Randell will be sadly missed by his brothers, sisters and many loving family and friends. Visitation and a celebration of life will be held from 2-6 p.m. on Monday, November 25th in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. MULROONEY, Dermot Laurence

July 1, 1943 - November 30, 2019
. age 76, of Dartmouth, passed peacefully on Saturday, November 30th in the presence of his family. He was born in St. John's, N.L., a son of William and Elizabeth Mulrooney. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Elizabeth Mulrooney (O'Keefe); brother, Bill Mulrooney; sister, Sheila Noelle Salway; and brother-in-law, Bruce Salway. Dermot is survived by, and left to mourn, his wife, Lorraine Mulrooney (O'Dea); his daughter, Jennifer Mulrooney (Francois D'Amour); son, Michael Mulrooney; grandsons, Samuel and Zachary D'Amour; sisters, Donna Mul rooney Makhan, Marilyn Cameron (Robert), Lee Ann Mulrooney (Jack Whelan); brother-in-law, Winston Makhan; sister-in-law, Lynn Mulrooney; and many loving nieces, nephews and family members. He cherished his children, Jennifer and Michael. His grandsons, Samuel and Zachary, were his pride and joy, bringing him much happiness.

Dermot graduated as a civil engineer from Technical University of Nova Scotia in 1966 and 1968 respectively. He was a member of Engineers Nova Scotia since 1968 and was actively involved in the Association until retiring in 2014. His career began in 1966 as Project Engineer at Federal Public Works in St. John's. He taught for 17 years with the Faculty of Engineering at Saint Mary's University and as Dean of Engineering. He was appointed Executive Director of Programs with the Nova Scotia Department of Education in 1985 and continued to hold the same position with Nova Scotia Community College. He held the position of Director of Professional Practice for 18 years with Engineers Nova Scotia until his retirement. He took great pride in and loved every aspect of teaching and engineering and happily gave his all. The family would like to thank the staff at Ocean View Continuing Care for their care and compassion during this difficult period of his illness.

Family visitation has concluded. Celebration of Life will be held in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth on Monday, February 10, 2020 at 2 p.m., followed by interment and reception. MURPHY, Adrien Augustus "Eddy"

Age 96, of Debert. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great great-grandfather on November 25, 2019 surrounded by his family at home. Born in Lamalin, N.L. on August 28, 1923, he was a son of the late Peter and Suzanne Benteau (Murphy). He is survived by children, Tina (Jack) Kaulback, Suzanne (Donnie) Adshade, Adrian (Lynn) Murphy, David Murphy, Tommy (Ester) Murphy, Cathy (Peter) Wenham, Bernadine (Lorne) Clark, Eugene (Kathy) Murphy, Michelle (David) Adams; stepbrother, Tommy (Hilga) Nordkap; son-in-law, Ralph Cooke; his companion, Catherine Joudrie; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Bernadine Mary (Phillip) Murphy (St. John's, N.L.); daughter, Elizabeth Cook; son, Daniel; brothers, John, Michael, Placid, Eugene; and sister, Paulette.

Eddy's love of life itself was what kept him going from teaching his many talents from cars, fishing, hunting, his music ability to teach himself to play just about anything. Dad loved to dance no matter what music was playing, his feet would slide across the floor. He ruled the floor at the dance night up to just about six months ago. Celebration of Life will be held in Debert Legion Branch 106 on December 7th, at 11 a.m. Music and refreshments. Cremation has taken place and burial will be at a later date.


MUSSEAU, Hilda

Age 88, of Berwick, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2019 in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Fox Island, N.L., she was a daughter of the late John and Dinah (Warren) Hayman. Hilda was energetic and enjoyed living life to her fullest. She was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Auburn. She is survived by her daughters, Mabel Comeau (Keith Lloyd), Elaine (Terry) Saunders, Darlene Gillam; sons, Donald, Randy (Kendra), Christopher; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Grace Vardy, Rita Osmond, Winnetta Osmond; brothers, Gerald, Clyde, Allen, John, Ronald; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; daughter, Dinah; grandson, Jason Ball; great-grandson, David Durling; and brother, Hartley.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, November 29th in White Family Funeral Home, Kentville where the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 30th, Rev. Virginia DeAdder officating. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Anglican Church Cemetery, Auburn. NIGHTINGALE, Maurice George

We announce with deep sadness that while on a joyous vacation in Cuba with his wife and two closest friends, Maurice George Nightingale, age 72, passed away on November 30, 2019. Born in St. John's, N.L., Maurice relocated to Nova Scotia in 1996. Maurice was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Leaving to mourn with precious memories are his loving wife, Beverly (Parsons); son, Daniel; daughter, Tina Murphy (Sean); stepdaughter, Kimberley Boudreau (Lee); stepson, Adam Kelloway (Adrianne); grandchildren, Brooke (Mitchell Parker) and Meghan Murphy, Sienna and Cohen Kelloway; brothers, James (Linda), Craig (Patricia); sister-in-law, Heather Parsons (Brian McGrath); mother-in-law Dorothy Parsons; and special friends, Jane and Paul MacDonald. Maurice was predeceased by his parents, George and Doreen (Phillips) Nightingale. Maurice was a long-term member of the Masonic Fraternity and Mazol Shriners in St. John's, N.L. He maintained his membership up until his passing. Maurice loved spending time out on the water as the Captain of his own boat "Just Cruisin" where he felt most relaxed surrounded by his family. A Celebration of Maurice's life will be held at a future date.

TAYLOR, Cecil William

Age 66, Halifax, passed away November 15, 2019 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Conception Bay South, N.L., he was a son of the late William and Hazel Taylor. He is survived by daughters, Michelle and Dawn Taylor; sister, Cora Cox (Colin). He was predeceased by daughter, Nadine Taylor; and brother, Freeman. Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. As per Cecil's wishes, there will be no visitation or service.
