In his early years in Twillingate, Rupert began working at the age of 11 transporting coal to homes in the winter and delivering food stuffs and packages in the summer with his horse named Star. They had lots of secrets between them! Rupert began his career in finance in St. John's with IAC, which sent him to Halifax and New Glasgow. His love for "da Rock" sent him back to Newfoundland where he retired from Investors Syndicate in Corner Brook at the age of 65.

Rupert was a community leader within the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Rotary Club where he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He enjoyed many good times fishing, hunting, golfing, curling, canoeing, camping, skating, cross country skiing and could float on his back forever in the lake! George's Lake cottage was the spot he loved most. This was where he and Marie could relax and enjoy family, friends and nature around him. In his retirement, Rupert drew great delight in all of the many family occasions with his children and grandchildren. His love for his wife was always evident even in their banter back and forth and their nightly card games. Rupert, we will hold you in our hearts forever. The family would like to thank Dr. Kaiprath, the devoted nurses of the 5th floor of Aberdeen Hospital and Palliative Care Unit and all of the wonderful caregivers with VON.

VICKERS, Michael John Patrick
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, June 1, 2020

Passed away in Glasgow Hall, Parkland at the Lakes (Shannex) in Dartmouth, on May 29, 2020. Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his sons, Stephen (Carol) and grandsons, Lennon and Sheamus of Halifax; and Michael (Klara) and grandchildren Ewan and Stella of Ottawa; his best friend and cousin, John Basha of Stephenville, N.L.; and his sister, Regina Yorke. Mike was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary (MacDonald) Vickers; his parents, William and Mame Vickers; and his brother, Bill Vickers. Mike left a wide circle of relatives and friends who will deeply mourn his passing.

Born on Bell Island, N.L., in 1943, he excelled as a scholar and graduated high school at the tender age of 15. He started his teaching career at 16 years of age and attended Memorial University for his Bachelor and Masters degrees. He held diplomas in Speech Pathology and Psychotherapy from Boston University and studied at numerous universities on a wide range of disciplines. Mike taught in Labrador City, N.L., and Kingston, Ont., before moving to Stephenville, N.L., to become principal at St. Stephen's elementary and high school. He was an excellent English teacher, and though demanding only the highest standards from his students, he offered support and help to many. Shortly after arriving in Stephenville, Mike met Mary and a whirlwind courtship ensued. Shortly after they married, two children followed, and family life began. Both Mike and Mary had a wide circle of friends and were very involved in the community. Mike was exceptionally organized and effective in the political sphere, contributing significantly to many campaigns municipally, provincially, and federally. Mike lovingly cared for Mary throughout her cancer journey. After Mary's passing, he spent 20-plus years in Mexico, where he was able to enjoy the sun, culture and many friendships along the way.

Mike will be remembered for his unique characteristics, style, and "one of a kind" persona. His attention to detail and daily routines were a blessing and a curse. Structure and goal-driven endeavours consumed him, but gave him peace at the same time; while his love and devotion to his two boys centered him. The family would like to recognize the outstanding care Mike received at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, Bay St. George Long-Term Care Centre and Glasgow Hall, Shannex during his final two years. At a later date, Mike will be laid to rest alongside his wife Mary in Hillside Interfaith Cemetery in Stephenville, N.L. If so inclined, a donation in his honor can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada (www.alzheimer.ca). Online condolences may be made at: www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com (Halifax Chapel).
