HAWKINS, Christine Rose (Young)
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, October 6, 2020

Age 83 of Halifax, passed away under the compassionate care of Hospice Halifax on October 2, 2020. Christine was born in St. John's, N.L., on July 21, 1937 to Gladys (Smith) and Eugene Young. Though she spent the majority of her life in Nova Scotia, she never forgot her Newfoundland roots. Memories of her grandparents' farm in Elliott's Cove, Random Island, and her schooldays at Bishop Spencer College forever held a special place in her heart. Those experiences also cemented her belief that blue jeans were work clothes, not mainstream fashion.

Together with her husband and growing family, she lived for periods of time in Halifax, Montreal and San Diego before returning to Halifax and joining the workforce as a single mother of three. Those who knew Christine can attest to her outgoing personality, often exhibited by her inability to enter any public domain without initiating a conversation. To her, strangers didn't exist, she just hadn't met them yet. Throughout her life she developed a fondness for entertaining, travel, decorating, Kahlil Gibran, all things pink, dressing up and shopping for any and all occasions. Her year-round passion for buying Christmas presents was unstoppable. She dedicated countless hours writing letters and connecting by phone to maintain friendships old and new, near and far. Christine established many family traditions, with her signature sweet potato marshmallow dish being but one. The family would like to thank the many friends, spiritual guides and dedicated care providers who extended such kindness to Christine throughout the years and in particular the last several months.

Christine is survived by her children, James, Susan (Rakesh Jain) and John (Louise); grandchildren, Lauren Jain (Sanjaya Mendis), Liam Hawkins, Benjamin Jain (Brittany Cameron), Grant Hawkins (Deirdre Campbell) and Ellen Hawkins; brothers, Keith (Anne) and Richard (Cathy); along with many dear nieces, nephews and their children. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brother, Derek.

The service may be viewed online at: https://grace chapel.ca/special-services Interment will take place in St. John's Cemetery, Halifax, at a later date. LEBLANC, Lillian Mary
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, November 3, 2020
December 27, 1922 - October 29, 2020
.
Lillian hailed from St. John's, N.L. Although a proud Newfie, all who were close to Lillian felt with her British heritage that she surely must have royal lineage. Thus said, she appreciated the finer things in life such as expensive clothing and jewelry. No one could challenge her on the institution of tea drinking and rarely could she find anyone who could come close to making the "good" cup of tea she demanded. Growing up in Newfoundland during the the period of time between the two world wars and being part of a family of 12, she understood what hard work and pinching pennies were to surviving through hard times.

It was during the Second World War that Lillian met and married the love of her life, Edward William LeBlanc, a Master Warrant Officer. With her love, they navigated the military life and made the best of postings with their two daughters, Maryanne and Benetta. Cherished times were had in Zweibrucken, Germany for four years. During that time Lillian and family enjoyed a truly cultural education as they were to able travel extensively though Europe. As well, Lillian and Edward shared their passion for square dancing that started with the many good friends and families they made during the Zweibrucken posting. This passion was to carry them through 50 years of the business of teaching, running square dance clubs, selling and creating square dance garments and hosting many dances at the community level. As well as supporting with the business of square dancing, Lilian turned her hand at a myriad of jobs such as cooking chickens for chicken burgers, making envelopes, selling Avon, running the children's wear department of Woolco for many years, working at the Cake Box Bakery, volunteering for several decades working with her husband at the Grace Stork Shop and then as patient escort with the IWK Grace Health Centre.

In her later years Lilllian enjoyed robust physical health garnered from the countless hours of dancing and walking outdoors in her daily life. She will be missed for incredible fashion sense, talent for interior decorating, and playing a mean hand at her favourite card game aces. Lillian was predeceased by her husband, Edward; and leaves behind daughter, Maryanne Digiosia (grandson Christian Digiosia (Jaime Digiosia), twin great-grandsons Jeffery and Camillo and grandaughter Coltina DiGiosia); daughter, Benetta Sanchez (son-in-law Santiago Sanchez, grandson Eduardo Sanchez, and granddaughter Lilia Sanchez). Cremation has take place and there will be a celebration of her life.

On October 10, 2020, Murdock Matthews, beloved husband, father, grandfa ther, great-grandfather, brother and cousin passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He was 89. Murdock was born in Anderson's Cove, N.L., and moved to Nova Scotia when he was in his teens. He started working on the fishing boats from a very early age and never lost his love for the sea. He was a veteran of the second World War, served as a volunteer Fire Fighter in New Glasgow for many years, was one of the very first instructors at the Nova Scotia Fire Fighting School and worked at L.E. Shaws for 42 years. He was a traveller and a snowbird. His wife Helen, who resides in Halifax, and Murdock travelled extensively to many places before they decided to make Florida their winter destination for over 24 years. He was always ready to share a drink, a fish fry and his trademark mischievous smile. He will be greatly missed by many. As his final gift, Murdock had arranged to donate his body to Medical Research with Dalhousie Medical Service in Halifax.
A Fisherman's Prayer: I pray that I may live to fish, until my dying day. And when it comes to my last cast, I then must humbly pray; When in the Lord's great landing net and peacefully asleep, that in His mercy I be judged big enough to keep.

McMURRAY, Carol Reagh
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, October 17, 2020
December 1, 1943 - October 13, 2020
.
Carol began her life in St. John's, N.L. where her father, Dr. J.R. "Jack" Kerr was a physician in the navy. She spent her early years in Annapolis Royal, where her father was both the town doctor and during part of her life, the mayor of the town. The eldest of four children born to Jack and Shirley (Greg, Lynn, Chip), Carol excelled as a student, an athlete and captain of the family waterskiing team. A natural beauty inside and out, Carol was crowned both Queen Annapolisa and Apple Blossom Queen.

At the University of New Brunswick, Carol met the love of her life, Robert "Bob" McMurray, a mediocre student and excellent basketball player with an infectious smile and love for life. They fell in love and Carol helped Bob graduate with a degree in Physical Education. After university, they married and moved to Picton, Ont. where they both taught Phys Ed. Carol's teaching career was short, as she soon became a mom to three boys, Mike (Letitia), Dartmouth; Chris (Jennifer), Victoria, B.C. and Jon (Allison), Georgetown Ont. Bob and Carol moved to Brampton and then Georgetown, Ont. where they made their permanent home. After a sabbatical for Bob in California, Carol started a new and highly successful career in real estate in Georgetown. Helping hundreds of people find new homes, Carol was often referred to as one of the most honest and trustworthy agents in Ontario. Known for her sense of humour, kitchen dancing and quick wit, Carol joined the University Women's Club in Georgetown, and developed many lifelong friends. Her closest female friends formed a hiking group in the mid 1970's that continues today (spouses were invited to join in the 1990's). A "gourmet" dinner club with couple friends persisted for two decades, until fondue went out of style.

A passionate community volunteer, Carol spent time raising money for many organizations, including the Canadian Cancer Society. Carol loved to travel and explored the world from her teenage years (spending a term at UBC when she was only 16) to trips with her mother (Africa, Europe) and Bob (Australia, Caribbean) later in life. Most of all, Carol was a wonderful, selfless and caring mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Her many nieces and nephews remember summers at the family cottage in Annapolis Royal where Carol would entertain with family dinners, games and dress up with her nieces. Her grandchildren, Carys, Hannah, Dylan, Grace, Jack and Quinn, knew Carol as a loving and attentive grandmother who took an interest in all aspects of their lives and loved to have everyone together for family vacations in Florida. Carol was taken far too early by a devastating disease, Alzheimers. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Carol's name to the Alzheimer Society in your home province. Her family hopes that soon enough we will have a cure so that other families don't have to endure the same struggle.

Due to COVID-19, there will be no public service in the foreseeable future. For this reason, family would appreciate anyone who wants to share a story or memory of Carol to help them remember all the wonderful ways she touched people's lives. Please share stories and expressions of sympathy at: www.jonesfuneralhome.co   Lastly, the family would like to express their thanks to Cristoph Summer and the staff at Mountainview Residence for the care they have taken with their mom over the last few years of her life. As her care needs increased so did their professionalism and empathy.
