SMITH, Elizabeth Bridget "Bette" -- Antigonish
Published: April 18, 2022
Elizabeth "Bette" Bridget Smith
, of R.K. MacDonald Guest Home, age 91, died peacefully on April 15, 2022 in Saint Martha's Hospital Palliative Care Unit with family at her side. Bette, one of three girls, was born in Harbour Breton, N.L. on November 19,1930; she was very proud of her Newfoundland heritage. At the early age of five she lost her father and two uncles when the fishing schooner "Alsatian'' sank off the Grand Banks. Following that tragedy, her mother moved her and her sisters to Antigonish.

She is survived by her husband, Glennie, the "love of her life" for 66 years; daughter, Sharon (Paul), Malignant Cove; sons, Glen (Lita), Lawrencetown, Halifax Co.; Shaun (Cheryl), Antigonish; Darren (Charmaine), Newfoundland; Kevin, Calgary; Jeff (Crystal) Antigonish; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Remembered fondly by her nieces, Glenda Martin Gerrow, Ethel Martin and Rita Martin of Cape Breton; and her nephews, Tommy Martin of New Glasgow; and Dennis Fear of Calgary. Predeceased by her parents, Arthur James Martin and Mary Agnes Martin; her sisters, Rita Martin and Mary Fear; brother, Tom Martin; nephews, Johnny Martin and Gerard Martin; stepbrothers, Bobby MacNeil and Francis MacNeil; and sister-in-law, Theresa Martin; inlaws, Alex and Catherine Smith; brother-in-law, Father Buddy Smith; sister-in-law, Barb Smith.

Bette was always stylish and elegant, and took great care with her appearance. Even in her final weeks she was making plans for hair and nail appointments, and would never face the day without a coordinated outfit and full makeup. She and Glennie graciously welcomed many into their home over the years. Whether for a short visit or extended stay, every person who entered their home would have fond memories of their hospitality. Their home was a gathering place for friends and family, and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren will have special memories of their visits with Grammy and Grampy. She stayed closely connected to her family with regular Facetime chats. Many were impressed by how she embraced technology late in life and her eagerness to learn something new.

Bette was a hard worker, raising six children while working outside the home. She worked for Drs. Greening and Saxon, then moved on to work for Drs. Smith and Mackenna. Later in life she worked at Antigonish Optical where she enjoyed meeting people and helping clients with their needs.

Visitation will take place in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., Antigonish, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, Monday, April 18th. WINSOR, Fred Archibald -- St. John's, N.L.
Published: April 16, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Fred Winsor, after a long and courageous battle. The loving son of Fred and Anne (Hillier) Winsor, he was born April 3, 1950 in St. John's, N.L. and passed away April 6, 2022. Survived by devoted wife, Karen Webber and cherished son, Haakon; sisters-in-law, Peg (John-deceased) Webber, Jan Nelson; nephews, Scott (Stacey) and Jamie; cousins, Judy (Dave), Maureen (Doug), Andrea (Ron), Edna (Tim), Miriam (Jim), Allan, Jacqueline, Gloria (Bob), Maxine, Jeannette, Vi (Fred), Leslie (Sandy), Margaret and Elizabeth plus many cousins throughout the United States. He is remembered by long-standing friends, Peyton Chisholm, and Kevin and Stuart Squires of Cape Breton.

Born and raised in St. John's, Fred attended Curtis Academy then Prince of Wales Collegiate becoming a community organizer in the Mundy Pond area during his early Memorial university days. The thread of community activism characterized his varied achievements of which the following are only a few. He worked with the Company of Young Canadians in Ontario, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. In Canso, prior to the 200 mile limit for foreign fishing vessels, he was an early proponent for a 50 mile limit to protect the inshore fishery from all other fishers, and later was proud of his efforts in laying the groundwork for a Cape Breton local within the Maritime Fishermen's Union. While in Nova Scotia he was instrumental in building cooperative housing in Halifax and working with the NDP. Fred's work as a fisheries observer sparked his return to university, and he earned an MA at St. Mary's University and a PhD in History in 1996 at Memorial University with a focus on health and safety in the fishing industry. He continued his involvement in fisheries and environmental issues with groups such as FLOW, NLEN, Action Environment and the Sandy Pond Alliance. As the Atlantic Chair of the Sierra Club Canada he advocated for a science based sustainable fishery and green energy production. He ran for public office to bring critical issues to the forefront.

Finally, he loved dancing and during the winter, he revered his weekly game of shinny hockey. Fred will be missed by a large circle of friends in both Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, and in particular around one table at The Ship Pub, where for years he met to share stories with his friends. We will all miss his kindness, his love of storytelling, and his sense of humour. Special thanks to Dr. Butler and Trena Snook, NP of the Home Dementia Team and Dr. Jat and the staff of the GPAU at the Waterford Hospital who cared for Fred with knowledge and compassion. To those who walked with him, watched movies with him, chatted over coffee, or invited him for a weekly meal you are forever in our hearts.

There will be no visitation due to the pandemic. A celebration of Fred's life will be held in early July. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer's Society in your area or to a charity of one's choice. To send a message of condolence, please visit: www.barretts.ca
