BUTLER, Ellen
Daily News February 15, 1918 (Friday)

In Memoriam. Mrs. James Butler, Holyrood. There passed peacefully away at Holyrood, Jan. 29th, one of the oldest and most respectable inhabitants in the person of Mrs. Ellen Butler, wife of James Butler, Esq. This estimable old lady had reached the age of eight-six, and although her death was not unexpected yet it came as a sad blow to her husband and her many other relatives and friends. She was attended in her illness by Rev. Father Finn who administered to her the last rites of the Church and prepared her for the last long journey, from which no traveller returns. Mrs. Butler was of a very kind and hospitable nature and her home was a well-known resort for summer visitors from St. John's and elsewhere who were always sure of a hearty welcome there. The deceased lady was the mother of twelve children and lived to see her great-grandchildren. She was a true example of a faithful wife and loving christian mother, and will be sadly missed by her husband who survives her, also her four daughters who are left to mourn her, namely: Mrs. W. P. Walsh of this place, Mrs. C. Sullivan, Harbor Main, Mrs. L. Grant and Mrs. P. Ryan who reside in Boston, Mass. Her funeral took place from her late residence on Friday, February 1st, and was one of the largest seen here for a long while, testifying the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. W. P. Finn, after which the sad cortege wended its way from Holy Cross Church to the Southside Cemetery where all that remained of a loving wife and devoted parent was laid to rest. To the sorrowing husband and family we tender our sincere sympathy. R.I.P. - Com.
