On February 7th, 2008, the world lost a wonderful wife, mother, sister, sister in-law, grandmother, aunt, mother in-law and friend and co-worker, her name is Phyllis Marie Adams. After a very courageous battle with cancer, she passed peacefully away with family and friends gathered at her side at the palliative care room at North Haven Manor, Lewisporte. Left to mourn are her husband, Robert (Bob); Daughters, Monica (Darren) Fudge, Kelly (Lyle) Hurley; son, Timothy (April) Adams and 3 grandsons; Carson, Andrew and Jacob. Also sisters; Grace (William) Handcock, Fran (Yves) Brett, Pat (Roger) Collins, Heather Brett; one brother, Joseph (Nicole) Brett; sister in-law, Emily Brett; brother in-law, Bruce (Louisa) Adams, Dolores Adams, Bonnie Adams and a number of nieces and nephews. She is predeased by her parents, Thomas & Evelyn Brett; brother, Ronald Brett and 2 brother in-laws, Rayfield and William Adams. Phyllis was an active member of the FFAW, and committee chairperson for the union at Notre Dame Seafoods, where she worked for approximately 29 years. Phyllis was also a past member of the community Boy Scout Movement and canvassed for many foundations such as Cancer, Heart & Stroke, Blind, etc. She also was a CGIT leader for a period of time. Phyllis loved her family with all her heart. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and enjoyed spending time with each of the three boys. She enjoyed being with her husband, while cutting firewood, many trips of shopping excursions to Grand Falls, Gander and Lewisporte with her daughters. Of course her only son was the apple of her eye, and enjoyed the three trips to Thompson, Manitoba to spend time with Tim and April's family. She especially loved going to conferences and meetings for the FFAW and met many wonderful people. April, her only daughter in-law, she regarded as her angel. Her two son in-laws, Darren and Lyle who she loved dearly were her sources for fun and laughter, as many memories were made with them, since they became members of the family.
During Phyllis' battle with cancer, she was an inspiration to everyone who met her by her amazing attitude and this should be a testament to all who are fighting some kind of illness ~ Never give up! Phyllis was born at Joe Batt's Arm, Fogo Island and when she was two years of age, her family moved to Comfort Cove, to live and is where she met the love of her life, Robert. There she stayed at home and raised her family until her youngest child was old enough to be left with a sitter, then she resumed work at Notre Dame Bay Fisheries. Her friends were her source of a social life both at work and outside the plant. She loved each one, as though they were family. Phyllis had a terrific sense of humour, especially when she became ill and was diagnosed with a brain tumour in July of 2006. Her peonies and roses were her favourite flowers and when spring came, she couldn't wait to get out into the garden and plan where the next bunch of wild flower seeds were going to be planted. Going to the beach to watch Carson play in the sand was another favourite passtime. She will always be remembered for her wonderful, cheery smile and her willingness to help anyone who needed it.
