REARDON, Herbert Edward - Age 76, of Dartmouth, N.S. Passed away January 6, 2001 at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Goose Cove, NF, he was the son of Michael and Mary Ellen (Murrin) Reardon. He worked for the Department of National Defence, HMC Dockyard for 34 years. He was a long-term member of the Scotia Legion, Branch 25; active member for many years of the Knights of Columbus and served as President of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. He will be sadly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Mildred (Riggs); daughter Sheila LeBlanc, Ontario; sons: Al (Iris), Dartmouth and Kevin (Carla), Alberta; six beloved grandchildren; brothers: Leo of Goose Cove and Tony (Gertie) of St. John`s and sister Anastasia Buckle, St. Anthony. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers: Albert, Joseph, Patrick, William and sister Rita. His remains were cremated and a memorial service held at St. Stephen`s Roman Catholic Church in Halifax on January 10, 2001. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Dartmouth General Hospital or charity of your choice. After the service, family and friends were welcomed at the home of his son Al in Dartmouth.

REID, Bessie Maude (nee Cumby) - Passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Complex on Monday, June 25, 2001, in the presence of her God, and surrounded in her last days by her loving family, Bessie Maude Reid of Green`s Harbour, formerly of Hopeall, in her 86th year. Predeceased by her husband Edgar Reid; her parents Leonard and Emma Cumby; six brothers and one sister. Left to mourn their loss and celebrate her life three sons; two daughters and one step-son. Son Edward (Corinne); daughter Joan (John McPherson), Dartmouth, N.S.; daughter Peggy (Fred Barrett), Green`s Harbour; son Donald (Pauline), Hopeall; son Leonard (friend Nita), Green`s Harbour; step-son Fred (Helga), Ontario; fourteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren, a large circle of other relatives and friends; special life-long friend Joan McCrow (nee O`Mara). Resting at Warren`s Funeral Home, Dildo with visitation Tuesday, June 26, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. Private family service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 27 with interment to follow at Faith United Church Cemetery, Green`s Harbour. No flowers by request, donations in her memory can be made to World Vision or Faith United Church Cemetery Fund.

REID, Charles - Passed peacefully away at the Hoyles Escasoni in St. John`s on Saturday, August 18, 2001, William Charles Reid of Shoal Harbour in his 91st year. Predeceased by wife, Ella (2000), brother Ken (1997). Left with fond and loving memories: daughters, Marjorie Tiller of St. John`s, Barbara (Oliver Vardy) of Shoal Harbour; son Rayfield (Jean) of Shoal Harbour; sisters, Alice Smith of Aspen Brook, Random Island, Sadie (Wilfred Thomas) of St. John`s, Gladys (Malcolm Kendell) of Corner Brook; and a sister-in-law, Molly Reid of Buchans; brothers, Fred (Jean), Ernest (Marina), both of Weybridge. Seven grandchildren, Beverley, Robert, Andy, Shawn, Gary, Jeff, Trudy; and eight great-grandchildren, Dominic, Nicole, Megan, Amber, Troy, Brandon, Chelsea, Jenny and a large number of relatives and friends. Remains will be resting at Fewer`s Funeral Home in Clarenville. Funeral will be 2 p.m. on August 20, 2001 at the United Church, Weybridge with interment at the United Church Cemetery in Weybridge. In his memory flowers accepted or a memorial fund to the Central United Church, Weybridge or the Alzheimers Society.

REID, Martha Lillian (nee Pretty) - Passed peacefully away at the Carbonear General Hospital on Thursday, May 10, 2001, Lily Reid, of Dildo, aged 76 years. Predeceased by husband Clayton, 1997. Leaving to mourn her children: Pat, Louise, Paul, Dorothy, Mona, Glenda, Jeff, Kim and their families; special friend Florence Smith; a number of nephews, nieces, other relatives and many friends. Resting at Warren`s Funeral Home, Dildo. The funeral service will be held from the Salvation Army Citadel, T.B.S. Corps on Sunday, May 13 at 2:30 p.m. Interment to follow Salvation Army Cemetery. Leaving to mourn four sons: Wilfred (Hazel), Ross (Marie), Harvey (Joanne), Eric (Jenny); eight daughters: Isabelle Brinson (Oswald), Loretta Reid (Lloyd), Goldie Reid (Norman), Bonnie Pollett (Wilmore), Diane Higdon (Claude), Marie Jones (Nath), Tammy Rowe (Rick), Mildred Burt (Stan); one brother Jacob Rowe (Edna); 32 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a large number of nephews, nieces, other relatives and many friends. Cremation has taken place. Visitation for family and friends at Warren`s Funeral Home, Dildo, Saturday, March 3, 8-10 p.m., Sunday, March 4, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., followed by a memorial service.

A long-time resident of Gander, Mr. Smith retired in 1994 after 30 years of service with the Town. Pre-deceased by his parents, Allan and Gertrude Smith; brother Hubert; and his first wife Margaret. Leaving to mourn his loving and devoted wife Trixie; sons: Elwood (Janice) of Baie Verte, Tony (Linda) of Bay Roberts; step-children: Roy (Helen) Burton of Labrador City, Linda (Leon) Chamberlain of Surry, B.C., Edgar (Tracey) Burton of Langley, B.C.; beloved grandson Joshua; special step-grandchildren: Nicole, Diana, Stacey, Lalena and Chad; special step-great-grandchildren: Cody, Justin, Andrea and Sara; brother Maxwell (Carrie) of Gander; sisters: Ethel (Bert) Rose of Holly, N.Y., Hilda (Raymond) Young of Gander, Grace (John) Butler of Mount Pearl, Stella (Michael) Hughes of Osgoode, Ont., Loretta (Edwin) Brinton of Osgoode, Ont.; sister-in-law Marie Smith of Gander, as well as Aunt Amy Smith, Aunt Hilda Mullett, and a large number of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. SPARKES, Clarence W. - Passed peacefully away at his residence on Sunday, June 10, 2001, Clarence W. Sparkes of Sibley`s Cove, age 86 years. Predeceased by wife C. Louise (Burry) June 1, 1995, and their much-loved daughter Patricia, January 11, 1943. Leaving to mourn two daughters: Elizabeth (Raymond) Coyle, Hamilton, ON, and Judith Day, St. John`s; three sons: James (Lang), St. John`s, Ford (Joy), Harbour Grace and Berle (Nita), Sibley`s Cove; nine grandchildren: David and Leanne Coyle, Dana and David Sparks, Brian and Karen Day, Jason Sparkes, Daniel and Rebecca Sparkes; three great-grandchildren: Meagan, Nolan and Sofia; two sisters: Edna Hoddinott, St. John`s and June MacDonald, Trent River, ON; one brother, Charles, Foxtrap; special friend and companion, Frances Stacey, Brownsdale; also a large number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. SPRINGER, Mary L. (nee Connolly) - Passed peacefully away after a brief illness on April 10, 2001 in Ellsworth, Maine, aged 75 yrs. Predeceased by her beloved husband Robert in 1970. Born Sept. 28, 1925 in Trinity East to Peter J. and Mary (Costello) Connolly, Mary was a former graduate of Littledale College and MUN and went on to teach in several Nfld. communities. In 1955 she went to work for the U.S. Govt. at Harmon Air Force Base in Stephenville where she met and married Robert. She was also a member of the service organization Beta Sigma Phi. After retirement they moved to Maine. Mary was very proud of her Newfoundland heritage and every summer would faithfully travel back to her adored cabin in Flat Bay where she enjoyed many hours of salmon fishing. Later, she purchased a summer home in Brigus to be near her brother Frank and his wife Phoebe. Mary was a devoted and active member of St. Joseph`s Catholic Church and the Catholic Golden Age Group. Her church and the church family were a very important part of her life. Survived by her son Michael (wife Kerry); two brothers: Ted (Marg) Grand Falls and Patrick (Agnes) New York; five sisters: Margaret Byrne (James), Joan O`Reilly (Tom), Geraldine Haring, Maureen Whalen (Raymond) all of St. John`s and Madeline Insalaco, Newburyport, MA; three sisters-in-law: Hilda (St. John`s), Alice (Topsail), and a very special sister-in-law, Phoebe (Brigus) plus many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by three brothers William, Gerald and Frank. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 am Monday, April 16, at St. Joseph`s Catholic Church, Ellsworth, Maine. TAIT, Margaret - 88, Berwick, Kings Co., passed away Saturday, December 15, 2001, in the Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Heart's Content, Newfoundland and Labrador, she was a daughter of the late Gilbert and Florence (Wilcox) Carberry. She moved to Canso, N.S., with her family in 1923 and received most of her early education there. She later attended Edgehill Academy, New Glasgow High School and Shaw Business College in Toronto. She returned to Canso where she worked as the Assistant Town Clerk for two years. She then moved and worked as a secretary for the Commercial Cable Co, in Montreal for 40 years and in Toronto for 2 years. She moved to Wolfville in 1980 and to Port Williams in 1981. Margaret was a member of St. John`s Anglican Church, Cornwallis, and was active in the A.C.W. and the choir. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by a cousin, Ralph (Louise) Wilcox, Factorydale, Kings Co., and several cousins in Newfoundland and Labrador and in Wales. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Eustace Tait; a sister, Ruth Carberry. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the H.C. Lindsay Memorial Chapel, Berwick. A graveside service will be held at a later date in St. John`s Anglican Church Cemetery, Wolfville. Donations in memory may be made to any charity.
