ALEXANDER, Ivan Richard - Passed peacefully away on Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at the Health Sciences Complex, St. John`s, Ivan Richard Alexander, age 64 years. Leaving to mourn daughter Lorraine; granddaughters: Alanna and Gillian; other family, sisters: Josephine Tyler, Mary Elizabeth Fitzgerald, Thelma Alexander, Marg Fisette, Siddy Rose, Cleo Short, Bernadette Clarke, Bertha Vallis; brothers: Gerald Alexander and Leonard Alexander; other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell`s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Ivan will be transferred to Stephenville Crossing for visitation at Russell`s Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Friday. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Stephenville Crossing. AMMINSON, John (Jack) - Passed peacefully away on April 26, 2002, after a short and courageous battle with cancer, John Amminson, aged 81 years, a veteran of the Second World War with the Royal Navy. Predeceased by his wife Claire (nee Melvin). Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories four sons, John Jr., Wayne (Ann Marie Carew), Carl (Bernice) and Barry; two daughters, Donna Brocklehurst (Michael) and Linda (Wayne Dwyer); nine loving grandchildren, Lana, Cory and Shane Brocklehurst, Marc, Melanie and Christopher John Amminson, Marlo (Geoff Stone) and Ashley MacDonald, and Leslie Claire Amminson; one great-granddaughter, Tiahna Brocklehurst Carroll; two sisters, Mary Tarasuk, Ida (Don) Marks; one step-brother, Tom (Madeline) Hoban; one sister-in-law, Shirley Melvin; many dear and loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. BAKER, A. Jack - Passed peacefully away at his home in Botwood, A. Jack Baker, in his 91st year. Leaving to mourn with many wonderful memories are his loving wife, Netta; daughter Anne and husband Angus Newman; son John and wife Wendy; five devoted grandchildren: Beth, Tim and Paul Baker and Jennifer and David Newman. Also brothers: Victor of Lewisporte, Maxwell of Vancouver; sister Mrs. Amy Dart of St. John`s, and many other relatives and friends. Throughout his lifetime, some of Jack`s happiest hours were spent helping and serving others. His life was enriched by his many years of service to Lions, his church, the Masonic Lodge, the Senior Citizen`s Federation, as Mayor of the Town of Botwood and to many other charities and service organizations. BARTLE, William Westbury - Died peacefully William Bartle of Grand Falls- Windsor at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre, April 30, 2002 Age 86. Beloved husband of 53 years to Alison Loveridge and loving father to Laurie Bartle of Calgary Alta, adopted daughter Barbara Foley and adopted grandson Julien of Campbellton N.B. Dear brother of Jack Bartle, Nowra, Australia, and sister Jo Call, Grimsby, Ontario. Remembered fondly by sisters-in-law Joan Bartle of Grand Falls-Windsor and Elsie Bartle, Cornwall, Ontario, two nieces, four nephews and many friends; including special comrade Reg Pye of St. Johns. Predeceased by parents Hyla and Mabel (Westbury) Bartle, sister Cicely Randell, brothers Bernard and Leonard. Bill served with the 166th Nfld. Field Regiment Royal Artillery in North Africa and Italy in World War II. He was a life member of Lodge Northcliffe and branch 12 of the Royal Canadian Legion. In his earlier years he participated in many sports, his favourite being hockey, baseball and golf. Funeral services from St Peter`s Anglican Church Twillingate, May 3rd. Conducted by the Rev. Stephen Adkins assisted by Rev. Brian Colbourne of Central United Church. Pallbearers were Edward Fewer and Boyce Osmond Branch 12 and Ernest Barnes, Charlie Hickmott, Fred Pearce, Albert Wheeler, Branch 21. Representatives from both Branches performed the Royal Canadian Legion ritual. Also attending were members of the Twillingate Masonic Lodge. Interment in the North Side U.C. Cemetery. Leaving to mourn with fond memories, his wife of 55 years, Clara; sisters: Anne, Theresa and Bride; daughters: Jeanette and Gwen (Sam); sons: Paul (Terri), Jim (Paula) and Wayne (Lyn); grandchildren: Patrick, Andrea, Jessica, Pam, Dale and Tara; and numerous nieces and nephews. CARTER, Elizabeth "Betty" - September 13, 1916 -April 30, 2002, Elizabeth "Betty" Carter recently of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, passed away at the age of 85 years on April 30, 2002 at the home of her daughter Joy surrounded by family. Elizabeth was born in Bay Roberts, Conception Bay. She was the daughter of James Glavine Joy and Mary Jane Ryan. Betty was one of six children. Mom always talked lovingly about her Mom, Dad, her brothers and her dear sisters. She played tennis in her younger years and was a Newfoundland champion. Betty will always be remembered for her love of family, her brilliant wit, her laughter and her enthusiasm and "joy" in everything she did. She maintained friendships with the "Bay Roberts crowd" for 80 years. She celebrated life with all those who knew her. The Lord blessed us with Mom`s and Granny`s wisdom and love. She will be deeply missed by her daughters Joy Carter /Donald Clarke, granddaughters Janet Elizabeth Gray and Ashley Clarke, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; Lynn Carter/ Doug Smith, grandsons David/ Deborah Simmonds and great-granddaughter Mackenzie; Rodney/ Megan Simmonds and great-granddaughter Jayden; Christopher Simmonds and great-grandson Cody, Tillsonburg, Ontario; and Mary Carter/ Gary Misikowetz and grandsons Michael and Adam, London, Ontario. FUDGE, Capt. Murdoch M. - 80. It is with deep sorrow we, his family, announce his passing April 5, 2002, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Belleoram, Nfld., he was a son of the late Capt. Gabriel and Flora (McCuish) Fudge. He attended school in Belleoram and Bishop Field College in St. John`s. He enlisted in the R.C.A.F. and served as a pilot during the Second World War. He attended the navigation school in St. John`s where he became a Master Mariner. He was Captain of the Minesweeper Revelstoke. He was an air traffic controller at Shearwater and was superintendent for CN Marine ferries for 22 years. After retirement he was Captain of the ferries that run between St. Barb and Labrador. For the last 10 years he was a member of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Mildred; son, Murdoch G. (Shirley), Dartmouth; sisters: Edna (Bert) Shea, Dartmouth; Lillian (Doug) Burry, Mount Pearl; granddaughter, Jacqueline. He was predeceased by brother, Angus and a sister in infancy. A memorial service was held 11 a.m. Monday in St. Alban`s Church, Rev. Kirby Walsh officiating, followed by a reception in the church hall. Private burial followed in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. GIANNOU, George Christos - Passed away in St. John`s on April 16, 2002, in his 93rd year, after a long, full and incredibly active life. George was the eldest son of the late Christos George and Nora Lee Giannou. He is survived by his wife Marie; son Robert and wife Linda; his grandchildren: Scott and Kelli Giannou; granddaughter-in-law Judy and great-grandson Jack; also by his brothers: Ted and Doug Giannou and their wives Marg and Betty. He was predeceased by his sister Penelope Wilansky and her husband Maurice. An active Mason, George was a Past Master of Avalon Lodge and the founding Master of St. George`s Lodge. He was a Past Commodore of the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club and an active sailor; a Past President of the St. John`s Curling Club and represented Newfoundland in four Briers and one National Senior`s Brier. At the time of his death, he was one of Newfoundland`s most active senior-senior curlers. At George`s request, cremation has taken place. GLENDINNING, Ella M. - A native of Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, died on April 21, 2002, in Sarasota, Florida. She was in her 101st. year. Miss Glendinning received her high school education in St. John`s and went on to teach school in Grand Falls. As a young woman, she then left Newfoundland to pursue studies at Bellevue School of Nursing in New York City. She received a masters degree from Teachers College at Columbia University and went on to a longtime career as Educator of Nurses and Administrator of Nursing Programs in New York City. After almost 40 years of service in the nursing profession, she retired to Peekskill, New York where she pursued her avocation of gardening for another 20 years. She moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1985 to be with her sister. Miss Glendinning was predeceased by her brother, Ian S. Glendinning (late of Edmonton, Alberta), and her sister Isabella G. Johnson (late of Sarasota, Florida). Left to mourn, among other relatives and friends, are three nieces, Barbara Ann Smith of Burlington, Ontario, Andrea Sumsion of Markham, Ontario, and Jane-Carol Glendinning-Johnson of Albany, New York. MASON, Helen Evelyn (Hewson) (Horwood) - Age 94 of Oakwood Terrace, passed away April 12, 2002 at the Dartmouth General Hospital, after a brief illness. Born in Amherst, N.S., in 1907. She was the daughter of the late Edgar and Helen (Bell) Hewson and was educated in Amherst and at the Mount Allison Ladies College. In 1929, she graduated from Mount Allison University with a B.Sc. and worked for several years for Mutual Life in Waterloo, Ontario. She married George R. Horwood of St. John`s, Nfld. in 1931 and lived in East Orange, New Jersey, for a short time before returning to St. John`s where they resided until his death in 1975. In 1976, she moved to Dartmouth and in 1979, married a former Mount Allison classmate, Harry E. Mason of Kingston, Ontario. After his death in 1993, she returned to Nova Scotia and lived near her family in Dartmouth. As a young woman she was an accomplished jeweler and wood carver and in later life discovered a love of and talent for painting in oils. During her long life, she enjoyed curling, bridge and the company of her friends and family and had a great love for travel and reading. She also belonged to the IODE for many years. She was fortunate to live to see the birth of her first great-grandchild who was given her family name. She is survived by her daughter Janet Bone and husband Richard; sister-in-law, Julia Hewson, San Diego, California; grandchildren, Susan (Mark Simking), Andrew (Maya Ray), Jamie (Louis Arsenault); great-grandson, Hewson Hans Bone Ray. She was predeceased by brothers, Seldon Hewson, Montreal, Dr. Wendell Hewson, San Diego, California, Dr. William Hewson, Wilmington, Delaware. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by family request. A memorial service will take place Thursday, April 18, 2002, 1:30 p.m. at Grace United Church, 70 King St., Dartmouth. Rev. Stephen D. Fram officiating. MURRIN, Irene (Payne) - Passed peacefully away on April 15, 2002 at The Agnes Pratt Home, Irene (Payne) Murrin, aged 89 years. Mrs. Murrin was born in Ramea on October 11, 1912 and was the last survivor of ten children, born to John and Harriet (Billard) Payne. She taught school in Ramea, as well as, Burgeo, before moving to Whitbourne. Mrs. Murrin and her late husband Hubert were one of Mount Pearl`s pioneer families, moving there in 1948. She was instrumental in the founding of Mount Pearl`s first Anglican Church, located in a converted garage on her uncle Jim Billard`s property. For many years she served as a church organist and for over 40 years was an active member of the Anglican Church Womens` Association and the Church Choir, as well as, devoting 35 years to the Girl Guides Association. During her "golden years" she enjoyed the company of her friends with the Happy Wanderers on various trips around Newfoundland and beyond. Three times widowed, Mrs. Murrin is survived by her sons: J. Donald Walker of Victoria, B.C., B. John Walker of Gander, Dr. George L. Sharpe of Austin, Texas, and daughter A. Patricia Murrin of Austin, Texas. She will also be greatly missed by ten grandchildren (Mitchell, Ann, Deborah, Jim, John, Bruce, Beverley, Lara, Jana and Andrew) and eleven great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and old and new friends. RICE, Edward (Ned) May 13, 1916 - April 13, 2002-Passed peacefully away at Fahey`s Personal Care Home in Fermeuse, on Saturday, April 13, 2002, Edward J. Rice of Cape Broyle. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, his sisters, Monica Rossiter, Hoyle`s Home, formerly of Cape Broyle, Catherine Boland of Calvert; and Dorothy MacIntosh of Boston, Mass. Remembered fondly by many other relatives and friends with whom he shared countless hours of happiness playing cards, darts, and enjoying the pleasure of each other`s company. He will be dearly missed by the staff and residents of Fahey`s Home where he lived for the past 12 years. Ned will be especially missed by the Hawkins Family, Glenda, Paula, Carolyn, Maureen and Suzanne. His great-grandnephews, Clinton and John Agriesti and good friends, Charlie and Marion Murphy, Blaine Agriesti and Davey Carew. RITCY, James (Jim) Gerald - 57, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully April 24, 2002 in the QEII with loving family and friends by his side. Born in Halifax, he was the son of Gladys (Myers) and the late Creighton Ritcy. A proud and loving husband, father and poppy to his grandchildren and an inspirational leader to all. A heart open to the community and an avid musician and lover of music. A seaman at heart, he was a great fan of Winston Cup Racing and an avid hockey enthusiast. He was a certified Electrician and former Director of the Board of OTANS. He was a former director of the Maritime Junior "A" Hockey League and current director of the C.A.D.C. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Premier`s Energy Council and a member of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. He co-owned Dominion Diving Ltd. for 32 years. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Linda (nee Galley); daughters: Kim (Bill Wiseman), Moncton, NB, Kimmie, Lawrencetown; sons: Rob (Nicola), Lawrencetown, Troy (Elaine), Dartmouth; sisters: Catherine (James Anderson), Musquodoboit Hbr., Jeanne (Maynard Williams), Kentville; five grandchildren, which were his pride and joy: Tanner, Jarret, Jacob, Brittany and Cameron. SNOW, Mabel Regina (nee Butt) - 1914- 2002. Passed away peacefully at Carbonear General Hospital, April 10, 2002, after a short illness. Born in Heatherton, Newfoundland, she married Cyril Snow of Howley in 1934, who predeceased her in 1987. She was also predeceased by son, Claude and daughter, Hazel. Since 1975 she had lived in Lewisporte where she lived until approximately 2 years ago. Th. - Suddenly at his home in Perth on Saturday, April 27th, 2002, Father John Wiseman at the age of 62, currently was serving the Parish of Montague and formerly the Parishes of St. Mary the Virgin, St. John`s, Newfoundland and Hodge`s Cove, Newfoundland, Canadian Armed Forces, Provost Corps. (retired) and Padre of Branch 244, Royal Canadian Legion, Perth. Father John was the cherished husband of Lorraine (Upshall) Wiseman; dear father of Michelle (Robert) Slack of Carleton Place, Kim Wiseman (Honza Kozel) of Toronto and grandfather of Jason King and Jessica and Mitchel Slack; he is also survived by 4 sisters and 4 brothers and was predeceased by 1 sister and 2 infant brothers. Father John will be sadly missed by all his family and his many good friends and colleagues. Friends may pay their respects at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, Perth, Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. Father John will lie in state in St. James Anglican Church, Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in St. James Anglican Church, Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. Interment St. Bede`s Parish Cemetery, Nolan`s Corners.
