BAIRD, Robert Temple - Passed away April 3rd, 2005 at the Dr. Hugh Twomey Medical Health Care Centre in Botwood after a lengthy fight with cancer. Predeceased by parents, William Wallace Baird & Louisa Isabella (nee Peyton); Wife, Ruth Elma (nee Grant of Harrow-on-the-hill, England); two Sisters, Evelyn Gruchy of PEI and Margaret Huff of Washington, DC. Left to mourn two sons, Roddy, (wife Carol nee Bulgin) and Peter of Grand Falls-Windsor; two grandchildren Grant and Lindsey (fianc , Roy Rowsell); one brother, Edgar of Gander, NL and one sister, Gwen of Kingston, Ontario; Nieces, Nephews and Friends.
Temple was born in Campbellton, NL on March 6th, 1917. He grew up in Angle Brook which is now known as Glovertown. His first job was in Botwood on Wireless Hill with the Weather Service, in 1937. He went overseas with the Nfld Forestry Unit in 1940, and married Ruth Grant of Harrow-on-the-Hill, England. They returned to Nfld in 1945 after the war. They lived in Badger for a few years while he worked with Bowaters and then moved to Bishop's Falls and worked with the AND Co as Woods Superintendent. He left the Co in 1960 and along with his wife Ruth built the Mt. Peyton Hotel and they operated a very successful business until their retirement in 1973. He was very proud of that achievement and that business is still flourishing 43 years later.
In his retirement he spent a lot of time on his Boat the Miss Mt. Peyton & the Twisty Ann and a lot of time in the woods --- He was the cook for a group of eight who crossed the Island in 1971 on Skidoos. They left Thorburn Lake near Clarenville and ended the trip 12 days later in Bay St. George on the West Coast. This trip was a big event considering the Skidoos of the 70's. It was also on this trip that Temple became a proud Grandpa. They did that same trip again in 1973.
As the years went by he developed prostate cancer and was heavily involved in the Prostate Cancer Group. He was also a member of the Central Cancer Survivors Choir and looked forward to every practice and thoroughly enjoyed their trips. Over the years he was an active fund raiser for the Canadian Cancer Society and a member of the Kinsmen Club, Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce and various other organizations.
It was Temple's decision to donate his body to Memorial University's Medical School for Research. In the hope it would be of some help to others.
Donations can be made to "The Central Cancer Survivors Choir" Canadian Cancer Society, 9 Pinsent Drive, Grand Falls-Windsor. For condolences online, please visit www.centralfuneralhomes.ca

Today recalls the memory
Of a loved one gone to rest,
And those who think of her today,
Are those who loved her best.
The flowers we will lay upon her grave,
May wither and decay,
But the love for her who lies beneath,
Will never fade away.

Whom I love so dearly"
