Imrie, Leona P.(nee Hayward)
Of North Hill, Needham, died on Monday April 13, 2009. She was 96. Lee was born in Tizzards Harbor, Newfoundland and immigrated with her parents John and Wilhemena (Anstey) Hayward to Boston as a baby. She had two sisters, Viola and Eleanor, both deceased. Lee's full life encompassed the events of two centuries. During the pandemic flu influenza of 1917, her mother died and her baby sister Eleanor was adopted by another family. Lee stayed in touch with her throughout her life. She nurtured her younger sister Viola, a role she maintained for the rest of her life. During the Great Depression and World War II, she supported her family both as a business woman and professional musician. Lee grew up in Cambridge and Watertown, and moved to Needham in the 1950's when she married her husband Robert M. Imrie (deceased). She had two step children, William Imrie (deceased) and Elizabeth Cleveland of Dracut, Massachusetts. Long before the women's rights movement, Lee was a partner with her husband in the Harlow-Imrie Corp of Newton Highlands. She also was a professional church organist and choir director who graced numerous churches in the Boston and West Suburban area. Founder of the Scottish Gaelic Choir of the Needham Presbyterian Church, known to be the only Gaelic choir in the United States at the time, she directed performances for over 40 years. Besides all of her professional duties, Lee was an active member of the Needham community. She and her husband developed the first affordable housing apartments for seniors in Needham, Nehoiden Glen, located on the land where they had lived for many years. They moved to the Matthias Mills House on Central Ave which is now the new home of the Needham Historic Society. She was a member of many civic organizations including past president of the New Century Club. Lee served as organist, Choir Director, Treasurer, ruling Elder and, until several months ago, moderator of the Deacons of the Presbyterian Church of Needham. She was an officer of the Boston Presbytery's Women's Organization. She leaves behind her beloved niece Helen Imrie Muther and her husband Paul J. Woods Jr. and grand niece Elena Muther Woods of Cape Elizabeth, ME as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. The family would like to offer a special thank you to the many friends who have provided so much support and especially to Harriet Laing. A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Needham, 1458 Great Plain Ave on Saturday April 25th at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
