BURSEY Thomas Elewyn September 25, 1934 - April 10, 2020 Regrettably we announce the end of the rich and full life that Thomas Bursey of St. Philip's enjoyed until his passing on April 10, 2020. He is predeceased by his parents Daniel and Elizabeth (Blackmore) Bursey, parents-in-law Clifford and Irene Luther. Left to cherish a lifetime of loving memories are his wife of 65 years Elizabeth (Betty), his devoted furry friend Angel, son Bob (Brenda) Bursey, daughter Irene (Ken) Abbott, grandchildren, Stevie & Nikki Bursey, Cole & Kristen Abbott, siblings John Bursey (Lillian deceased), Dolores (Rudy) Ottler, Marcie Brooks (Clint deceased), Elizabeth (Bernie) Lyons, Carl Bursey, and Karen Fraser. Also left to mourn are many beloved nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends including fishing/hunting buddies Leo White and Harold Priddle. Tom was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His family was the centre of his life and he was profoundly grateful for the good fortune of having his children and grandchildren grow up and live in proximity to him in his beloved NL. Countless special visits and occasions took place at Papa's house over many years. Bonfire Night was a particularly special annual event for the entire family and, on one occasion, the St. Philip's Volunteer Fire Department as well. Tom graduated from Mount Allison University and the University of New Brunswick with undergraduate degrees in both civil and mechanical engineering. He also obtained a Master of Science (Engineering) degree from the University of Saskatchewan and enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a Professional Engineer working in both the public and private sectors. He was a clear, critical thinker and applied this gift to his career and his many varied interests. He had a passion for matters relating to the environment, in particular, wildlife conservation. Tom was an articulate, tireless and persistent advocate for his causes, and passed away with several unfinished letters on his desk. He also loved the outdoors and was an avid sportsman and expert fly fisherman. Tom always understood that any fruits of his innumerable excursions into NL's outdoors were merely incidental to, and never the measure of, a successful trip. His lively wit, sparkling humour and clear tenor voice will be forever missed by those fortunate enough to have shared space with him around campfires throughout NL. As a result of the current COVID-19 protocols there will be a family visitation only. In the future, a celebration of a life well lived and thoroughly enjoyed will be scheduled. Donations in Tom's memory can be made to the SPCA or a charity of your choice. To send a message of condolence please visit www.carnells.ca

BURT James Passed peacefully away on April 11th, 2020, James Burt, husband of 68 years to Hilda (Randell). Son of William and Keziah Burt, father to Garry (deceased; Margie) and Judy (David, deceased); brother to Clyde (Beanie, both deceased), Nina (Rob, both deceased), and Cassie (Fabian); loving grandfather to Kelly (Joel), Lisa (Doug), Karen (Chris) and Kim (Trevor); proud great-grandfather of Leah, Lochlyn, Mason, Hannah, Kinsley, Anna, Ella and James, along with many special nephews, nieces, dear in-laws and great friends. Born and raised in beautiful Rose Blanche, Newfoundland. Jim was always a hard-working individual. One stormy day while working at the General Store, he was sent down to the wharf to welcome Rose Blanche's new school teacher. Her name was Hilda, and she became the love of his life. Over the years, there has always been some 'discussion' about who first left Rose Blanche, and 'who followed who' to St. John's - but the result was a lifelong love reflected in their marriage of 68 years. There wasn't much Mom and Dad didn't do together - this included making the best bread and tea biscuits around. Jim worked for 25 years with the Waterford Hospital. Following that, he went on to become a carpenter, and helped to build a number of homes and businesses around St. John's and Mount Pearl. He was a lover of Newfoundland stories, but nothing beat a good game of cards. Jim and Hilda spent countless special nights with family and friends enjoying a game and good company. In earlier years, they enjoyed special times in Glace Bay and Heart's Delight - and in later years, they spent wonderful winters in Florida at the South Pasedena Mobile Home Park. We are so grateful to the very special people that took care of Dad in his final months, especially the amazing caring staff at Glenbrook Lodge, who care equally and wonderfully for every resident everyday, and continue to care for Mom. We simply don't know how you have enough time or arms! You are the true heroes, especially in times such as this, and will be remembered always. Thank you?. Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Jim's wishes, a celebration of his life will occur later. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice in his memory. To send a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com

CLARKE William (Bill) With sadness, grief and finally relief for our Father, we announce the passing of Bill Clarke, at the age of 92, on April 2nd, 2020, at Carbonear Hospital, with his devoted love, Catherine Pennell at his side. Our Father loved and cared for his Family his whole life. He went 'on the Labrador' at age 12 and subsequently sailed as mate on his Father, Wallace's schooners, supplying Newfoundland outports, during, and for a time, after World War II, always giving at least half his wages to his mother, Mary (Hefford), to help support his five younger sisters. In the late 1940's he moved to Canada and worked up to 16 hours a day on cargo boats plying the Great Lakes trade. On a Toronto stopover in 1950 he met the love of his life, our Mother, Susie (Morgan) & they were subsequently married for over 50 years, until her death in 2003. Once we came along he took a job with ADT as a burglar alarm installer & stayed with that firm for 35 years allowing him to properly provide for and house his family. In the early 1960's he took up with the second love of his life, Freemasonry. He memorized the Masonic Ritual inside and out and was proud to be a member, after he retired and moved back from Toronto, of many Lodges in the Bay Area of Newfoundland. In 2017 he was extremely honoured to be awarded a 50 Year Medal by the Grand Lodge of Newfoundland. Our Father was a Good Man and they are hard to find. We are all grateful for his life and will miss him tremendously. All our love, Dad, from your Son, Wallace; your Daughter, Ruby; our spouses & your 9 grand-children & 9 great grand-children; your loving Sisters & all of their extended families. As per our Father's request, cremation has taken place. There will be a full Masonic Funeral Service held at a later date this year, due to these 'strange times' we are living in. Our Dad moved to the UK as a young man and was later accepted to medical school at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, graduating as a medical doctor in 1972. He married an Irish nurse, Peggy Finn, in 1973. Our Dad was recruited to work a six month position as a medical doctor in St. Joseph's, St. Mary's Bay, in January 1974. He was so proud to become a Canadian citizen in the late 1970's and loved Newfoundland, often remarking 'Why would anyone want to go anywhere else!'. Our Dad had a long and successful medical career which he truly loved. He worked at the Waterford Hospital in geriatric care for 33 years, held evening clinics at Mount Pearl Medical Centre for 30 years, and enjoyed working 'overseas' on Bell Island. He was also an avid tennis watcher and did not like to be interrupted during a good match! Our Dad was a great man, proud father & grandfather, wonderful doctor, and friend to so many. He taught us so much about the importance of hard work, having a positive attitude, and respecting others. Our Dad's resilience and passion for life despite later health challenges was truly inspiring. Dad, you will be dearly missed by so many. In lieu of donations to a charity, we would like it if you could please extend a gesture of kindness to someone in need at this difficult time on our Dad's behalf. GRIFFITHS Kenneth Herbert Thomas Kenneth (K.H.T.) Griffiths, December 18, 1929 - March 29, 2020. We are heartbroken to announce dad's passing at home in Langley BC, in the presence of family after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Predeceased by his parents Ivor and Mae, sister Gwynneth Simmonds and husband Don in Wales, and daughter Teresa Lindstrom and husband John of Brampton Ontario. Leaving to mourn, Sylvia, devoted wife of almost 70 years, son Tony (Judy), daughter Kay (Lew), son Gareth (Carolyn), grandchildren Karen, David, Robyn, Cara and Kevin; eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was an especially loving husband and father wholly dedicated to his family; we could all count on dad. Dad and mom met when he was a young apprentice and she worked in the stores of the South Wales Switchgear factory when she was only 15 - when he asked for a rubber mallet and had to convince her that he wasn't pulling her leg. They've been sweethearts for over seventy years since then and he has been a selfless and unfalteringly devoted caregiver to her for the last seven years. His life began in Wales where he was educated as a Millwright (Journeyman) and then as an Engineer (Mechanical, Nuclear and Industrial). In his 40's he returned to university to earn his Master's in Engineering. In his early career in England and Wales he held such positions as Nuclear Weapons Designer and Plant Manager. He achieved the status of Fellow of the Institution of Nuclear Engineers. He was a Veteran of the Royal Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict in a group of 28 Special Armaments engineers for all of Britain. This experience, along with his service to Atomic Energy in both Britain and Canada led to lifetime adherence to the Official Secrets Act. In 1962 he moved his family to Winnipeg where he was employed by Bristol Aerospace to work on the famous Black Brant sounding rocket. One cold winter in Winnipeg convinced him to move his family to Pembroke Ontario where he worked as an Engineer at the Chaulk River Atomic Energy plant. In 1966 Ken moved his family one last time to Newfoundland where he and Sylvia lived happily for 25 years before retiring to Ontario and Florida and ultimately BC. While in NL Ken made a huge contribution to adult education in the province in such positions as College Instructor, Department Head, Director, Principal and the Director of Curriculum for the Division of Adult Education, responsible for the establishment of numerous Vocational Schools across the Province. At the request of the Provincial Government, he took a sabbatical to assume the position of Manager of McNamara Industries in order to prepare the province for the upcoming oil industry, after which he returned to his previous educational duties. He was a man of high intellect, ability and integrity. He was well-respected - a gentleman's gentleman. Dad's priorities were always wife and family first, then job, then friends and interests, with him having been the BC Seniors snooker champion for several years before giving up the game to spend more time with Sylvia. He still looked forward to Tuesday morning coffee hour chats and laughs with friends in his condominium. He especially appreciated the visits and support of granddaughter, Karen Lindstrom, in his final months. He will be forever loved by his family and sorely missed by all who ever knew him. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.victoryfuneralcentre.ca    In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a Women's or Homeless Shelter of your choice.

HOGAN Edward Gerard October 16, 1948 - April 28, 2020 At home. In the arms of those he held dearest. It is with profound sadness that we announce the loss of our adorable, amazing, loving son, brother, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Predeceased by his parents Cyril & Mary (Maime Noonan) of Northern Bay, NL. Forever remembered and forever loved by his devoted partner and soul mate of 50 years, Lorraine (Rotchford); his cherished children Danielle, Stephen (Jelena) and Nadine (David Bisson); grandsons and the light of his life, Connor Edward and Ethan Angelo Hogan; cherished sisters and brothers in-law, Joanne (Rev'd Keith Sheppard) and Theresa (Paul Boundridge); special in-laws Steve (Ann) Rotchford, Howard (Mary Ann) Rotchford, Diane (Bruce) Duinker and Irene (Tom) Picco; numerous nieces and nephews, countless life-long friends, colleagues and worthy adversaries. Dad's second love and second home, NAPE, is what gave him purpose outside his family. While many people spend their lives dreaming of retirement dad loved the daily morning drive to his office, looking forward to sitting with the NAPE crew eating his tea and toast, and sharing his endless stories of battles lost and battles won. NAPE was his inspiration that our family grew up to admire. Dad lived to work and to the end it was his NAPE brothers and sisters who helped him transition through this final phase of his life's journey. The compassion and love bestowed upon dad by his NAPE family has warmed all our hearts forever. To those who knew dad they would be quick to tell you he was by no means a patient man, but rather a quick and ferocious negotiator. By nature he mentored those coming up behind him, imbedding in them his legacy of fighting for workers rights. Dad fought for his members as much as he fought for his family. If he said he had your back, he always had your back. If he called you friend, you were always his friend. Described as the best in every role he took on he was one in a million. Dad's strength, character and spirit will be remembered by many and for that we are forever thankful. Although he has shed his earth suit, what he leaves behind is his family to carry on his memory - the love we shared will never leave our hearts. "But he is up in an instant and his adversary is down - backward, on his elbows". There will be no funeral service due to COVID-19 precautions. We have celebrated dad's life all his life - let's keep doing that, each in our own way. Cremation has taken place. In a private family gathering at a later date his ashes will be placed alongside those of his parents in his beloved Northern Bay.
In our dad's memory, please be kind to others and always pay it forward

The love between mom and dad was very evident in the way he took care of her every need, especially when she became ill. Her passing affected him deeply; and, though we miss him dearly, we know they are now together again.

MCDONALD Marshall Paul William It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beautiful son Marshall McDonald at the age of 24 on Easter Sunday April 12, 2020. He was born May 14, 1995 in St. John's. Marshall joins his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Joan White in heaven along with his beloved dog Belle whom he adored. Marshall is survived by his loving mother, Rhonda White (Doug Janes), father Paul McDonald (Lauren), his adoring and protective big sister Amanda McDonald (Mark Janes) and his beautiful little niece Ireland to whom he is a proud Godfather. Marshall also leaves behind many friends who witnessed firsthand his beautiful heart and fun-loving nature. He always made sure nobody was left out and put others needs before his own. We believe it is no coincidence that Marshall was taken from us on Easter. He was the most sympathetic and empathetic little boy his entire life. His desire to always help and show empathy to all he came in contact with on this earth was what set Marshall apart. We take comfort knowing he is still doing it in God's loving arms. Please hug your children today and do something good for someone in these troubled times in the name of our beautiful son Marshall.

MCKINNON Cecilia Katherine (Hynes) Wife, mother, grandmother, baker, knitter, bridge player, community volunteer, woman of faith. Born February 22, 1923 in Ferryland. Passed peacefully away on April 8, 2020 at her residence. Aged 97. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred (2005), infant son Michael, sons, Stephen (1982) and David (2014). Brothers: Howard, Vincent, Clarence, Ernie, Thomas, and Peter Hynes and sister, Marie Cleary. Left with a lifetime of memories to cherish are daughter Heather, sons Brian (Adele Rosenbloom) Toronto, Kenneth (Christine Molloy), Ian (Rhonda), adored grandchildren Stephen, Jesse, Erin, Colin, Jennifer, Erica and Ella, cherished daughter in law Sharon Tiller and elder siblings Aiden Hynes (Edna) and Rita Maddock. She also leaves special family members Elroy Hynes(Maureen) and family, sisters in law Veronica Hynes (Ferryland), Delories MacKinnon(Sydney, NS) Freddie MacKinnon(Phoenix, AZ) and Alberta MacKinnon(Toronto) and a large circle of nieces and nephews of the Hynes family and Mc/MacKinnon clan of Sydney NS. Like many women of her generation who did not work outside the home, Mom used her God given talents for the power of good. Mornings would find her in the kitchen baking for her children and their friends, and also for the many charity bake sales who would request her much sought after baked goods. In the background was her constant companion, CBC's Morningside with host Peter Gzowski, whom she adored. Despite a medical condition that robbed her of her hearing and a complete loss of balance in later years, she baked her last apple pie at age 95 and donated 13 cherry cakes to the Cdn Cancer Society Festival of Trees at age 93. In the afternoons, she would sit by the dining room window and knit at a pace that would defy belief. In modern day parlance, she was a "machine". She would churn out babies pram suits, cardigans, blankets and other layette pieces all bound for the General Hospital Foundation gift shops. Hundreds of pieces were produced faithfully every year and mom was recognized with a Lifetime Contribution Award for her efforts. She was a member of the St. Clare's Ladies Auxiliary. She faithfully volunteered at her children's schools - St. Pius X, St. Bon's where she headed up the Ladies Auxiliary overseeing the iconic Sports Day, and Gonzaga where she co-chaired the PTA for many years alongside Father McKenna SJ. Mom loved a game of bridge and played in many groups. She also played in the IODE marathon in aid of St. Luke's Home and won the high single score for 13 years running. She was devoted to her parish - Mary Queen of Peace and she served in many capacities, but most notably chaired the Turkey Tea Committee for the annual Garden Party for over 35 years. She only stepped aside when the event was discontinued. The Knights of Columbus bestowed on her a lifetime recognition for her incredible contribution. Mom knew much sorrow in her life burying two sons in their prime but she tried very hard to not let it define her, and if you asked, she would say she had a joyous life. Her strong faith guided her and she was certain in the belief that they would all be reunited. She had a 55 year romance with her dashing Wilfred who was her one great love. Theirs was a love story for the ages. They enjoyed an active social life and could regularly be seen commandeering the dance floor displaying their dance skills and romance for all to see. Thanks to Denise Cahill NP for her many years of attentive care that extended to her palliative care and to good friend Dr. Marie O'Dea for palliative consult. We express sincere gratitude to those who offered Mom friendship and kindness in her elder years, especially Marie Whelan, Margot Reid OC, Lucy and Fred Conway and the residents of 7 Tiffany Lane condominiums, as well as her caregivers and friends Elizabeth Prince and most especially Marie Clouter. We are grateful to Very Reverend Monsignor Francis Puddister VG, who visited frequently and who blessed Mom with the final sacrament just a few weeks ago and to Mr. Tom Lawlor who brought Holy Communion every Saturday and prayed and then chatted with Mom. As it was her wish to not be cremated, a private burial will take place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. If desired, donations can be made to Mary Queen of Peace Food Bank or NL Autism Society. Arrangements entrusted to Carnell's Funeral Home.

MORRISSEY Margaret Mary January 29, 1937 - April 13, 2020 It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our dear mother, Margaret Mary Morrissey, aged 83. Predeceased by her husband Ronald on November 13, 1988; parents: Patrick and Rita Murray; brothers: Greg, John, Kevin, George and Don Murray; sister Anita Cantwell. She leaves to mourn her children: David (Linda), Ronald (Pamela), Jim (René), Stephen (Barbara) and Rita (Shawn Tee). Grandchildren: Michael, Andrew, Ryan (Julia), Katie (Josh), Laura (Kevin), Amy, Sarah, Daniel, Christopher and Abigail and great grandchildren Tyson, Lauren, Max, Jack and Ocean. Also leaving to mourn are her precious sisters Mary Budgell, Rita Sullivan, Kay Clatney; brothers Gerald and Terry Murray as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Also leaving to mourn her special and dear friends Elaine Sullivan, Richard (Don) Fleming, Kay Donahue and Dorothy Whittle. Born in Windsor Newfoundland, Margaret moved to St. John's at the young age of sixteen to attend nursing school at St. Clare's and proudly graduated as a registered Nurse in the Graduating class of 1957. Before graduation she met the love of her life Ronald, a city boy from Springdale Street. In a double wedding along with her nursing friend Agnes and Ron's brother Jack, she married Ron on June 15, 1958. Although most of her 11 brothers and sisters remained in central Newfoundland, Margaret stayed with Ron in St. John's to begin her nursing career at St. Clare's and started a family with four sons and eventually a little girl. Marg's heart was broken when Ron passed in 1988 but she reconnected with her many friends throughout the years which continued to be her favorite part of life, sharing stories and laughing. She always said how lucky in life she was to have such beautiful friends and she continued to share small pleasures with those many friends reaching out over the phone frequently even during recent times telling a story or just reminiscing about the past. Although she couldn't bake her own bread over the past year, Margaret continued to love the pleasure of food and family celebrations that came along with every meal. When she wasn't saying a prayer, drinking tea or watching a movie, she would reach out to a friend and share a laugh or two and try to figure whose dinner offer to accept. Margaret was strong in faith and conviction. Although during the past couple of years her health robbed her of some freedoms, she never gave in once. Never one to complain or be a burden on anyone, she made the best of what she was able to do and remained thankful for every breath of life she had and smile she could share. She was always so proud of her boys and her little girl. The family would like to thank Dr. Mercedes Penton, Dr. Kristy Tompkins and the many other health care members who provided excellent care to Mom over the last two years. She was very grateful for the care that gave her the additional time with her family. And for this we are very thankful. Mother you are the true inspiration to us. Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass and burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mom's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society OR Canadian Blood Services.

REID M.D. Dr. Debbie
Debbie Reid
was born in 1954 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, but grew up in New Brunswick. She graduated from Riverview High School in 1972 and went to Dalhousie University to study Science with the ambition of getting into medical school. Being an intelligent woman, she ascertained, (rightfully so) that, at the time, being accepted to Med School as a female, might be tricky, so she applied as D.H. Reid instead of Debbie. It worked, and she was accepted into Memorial Medical School in Newfoundland. After graduating, she went on to pediatric training in London Ontario. And then it was back to St. Johns' Newfoundland, where she spent her entire career in pediatric medicine and pediatric critical care, first at The Original Janeway Hospital and then at the New Janeway. Debbie was an original, or at least those of us who knew her best thought she was! She was the big sister, and rarely let any of us forget it. But from her, we learned how to drive a car, power and sail a boat, play a guitar and bake! She was a fabulous cook, especially cheesecakes. Cooking for a dinner party of a couple of dozen was easy for her, and not only did she entertain at her home, she took lots of meals, and food into the staff at the hospital. And how she loved her work at the hospital. How she loved the kids and their families. And she would go to great lengths for "her kids," taking in movies, and treats and books - anything to keep up their spirits. She adored them. And she adored her niece and nephew and was always known as 'the aunt who brought presents." Debbie is predeceased by her father Bill, and leaves to mourn, her mom Barbara Reid (nee Lohnes), her two sisters Peggy (Dennis) and Lori (Wayne) and her much beloved niece (Nikki) and nephew (Chris with his wife Bex and infant son Finn). Two aunts and many cousins and their families also survive her. In later years, when she needed extra help, her friend Jo Carroll was there to help her, and Debbie was always grateful. While living and breathing her work at the hospital, she was intensely private in the rest of her life. If she had been a gambler, she would have been an expert, for she played her cards very close to her chest. She died the way she wanted: privately and on her terms. She gave up chemo when it became apparent that she was sicker with it than without it. And she chose to die at home, in familiar surroundings. The hospital was not for her! She had spent all her adult life in the hospital, usually in the pediatric intensive care unit which she not only established but ran ~~ like the captain of a ship. And her "crew" were intensely proud of her and loyal to her. They will miss her and so will the ones who called her family. When ill health became an issue for Debbie, a retirement party was planned, and a plaque was placed in the hospital in honour of her work. It reads: "In honor of Dr. Debbie Reid Founder of Modern Pediatric Critical Care in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In recognition of a lifetime of dedication. With heartfelt and sincere thanks from all those with whom she worked, particularly the children of this province, whom she dedicated her life's work. We will never forget the amazing contributions of Dr. Debbie!! Debbie Reid died this week on April 28 in St. John's, Newfoundland. But it's not the fact that she died that is noteworthy. Rather it is her life that is important. For because of her, there are children who lived; and families who got to take their kids home. It was all she wanted.
