BAJZÁK Dénes Dr. Dénes Bajzák, a long-time resident of St. John's, NL, passed peacefully away this past Sunday, April 18, 2021 at Pleasant View Towers at the age of 87 years. He was a freedom fighter, scholar, teacher, professional and sportsman (and he made a "perfect" Perfect Martini). Dénes was born in the town of Cegléd, Hungary on Dec. 25, 1933. He embarked on an extraordinary journey which began as a forestry student at the University of Sopron (Hungary) at the time of the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, then on to the University of British Columbia where he obtained his BSc and Master's Degrees in Forestry. In 1960, he began his 40+ year career in Newfoundland and Labrador, first as a Research Officer and Scientist with the Canadian Forest Service where he initiated the first ecological land classification studies in Western Newfoundland and Labrador, to Head of the Forestry Program and Full Professor of Engineering & Applied Science at Memorial University, where he taught and guided hundreds of Forestry and Engineering students. During this time, he fell in love with the Province and a beautiful Newfoundland woman (like most come-from-aways do!) named Daphne whom he married. He then obtained his PhD at Syracuse University (New York), produced more than 75 publications, and was a great teacher and motivator who instilled many of his students with the principles of hard work and fair play in academics and the practice of Forestry. Dénes was a member of the NL Opimian Society, Board member of the NL Multicultural Society, Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the NL Section of the Canadian Institute of Forestry, and visiting researcher at the Scott Polar Research Institute of the University of Cambridge (England). He was bestowed the national Tree of Life Award from the Canadian Institute of Forestry. However, he will be most remembered as a loving family man. He is predeceased by his wife Daphne (née King), parents Béla Bajzák and Ilona (née Csendes) Bajzák of Cegléd, Hungary, brothers János and Tibor, father-in-law John King and mother-in-law Lily (née Eastman) King, sisters-in-law Pearl Piatt and Kathleen Clinkard, and brothers-in-law Jack King, Jack Clinkard and George Piatt. Mourning his loss are his loving brother Béla, son Dénes Jr. and daughter Krisztina, grandchildren Zsuzsanna, Adrian and Krisztian, and sisters-in-law Valéria (née Krasznai) Bajzák and Ágnes (née Hörömpö) Bajzák. He was fortunate to have such wonderful and caring cousins, nephews and nieces throughout Hungary, Canada and the United States. Special thanks to niece Mary Jeffery, nephew-in-law Robin Jeffery, niece Yvonne Piatt, and friend Bruce Roberts. As well, to the Hungarian family who, despite the distance, always opened their hearts and homes with love and belonging. Also to Kent Brown, and the Brown and Cochrane families, who always treated him as part of their family. Because of the pandemic times we live in, there will be no wake. A memorial service starting at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 23, 2021 will be held in person for only Dénes' children, grandchildren and pall bearers. This memorial service will be streamed online, with photo slides, at https://view.oneroomstreaming.com/authorise.php?k=1619035518111838 Immediately following the Memorial Service, the interment will take place at the Anglican Cemetery on Kenmount Road and be open to all who wish to attend (please respect social distancing). The interment will also be live-streamed at http://streamingservices.ca/ for those who wish to remotely attend, and for our friends and family living throughout the world. In lieu of flowers, please plant a memorial tree in honour of Dr. Dénes Bajzák at https://www.alivingtribute.ca/

CONWAY Dr. Valentine Henry B.Sc M.D., FRCSC, ABO November 10, 1945 - April 16, 2021 "Follow Your Heart" Passed away peacefully in the presence of family at the age of 75 in St. John's. Val lived a wonderful, full and rewarding life. He was born in St. John's to the late Dennis and Kathleen Conway and raised with his seven siblings: Estella (Doug) Lilly, Margaret (Ray) Robidoux, John (Andrea), James and the late Irene (John) Paradis, Frederick, and Dennis. When his family relocated to Montreal in the early 1960s, Val chose to stay behind to finish his education. He attended St. Patrick's Hall and Brother Rice High School before graduating from Memorial University. He went on to study medicine at Dalhousie University where he met the love of his life, Mary (nee MacNeil). They were married in 1970 and welcomed sons Christopher (1972), David (1973), and Sean (1976). When Val graduated from medical school in 1974, he relocated with his family from Halifax to the south coast of Newfoundland to start a general practice. They first lived next to the clinic in Mose Ambrose before moving to English Harbour West. Val's three years on the south coast with his young family were a defining period in his life. He fell in love with the people, places, and culture of this spectacular part of the world. Val was accepted to a residency training program in ophthalmology at the University of Saskatchewan and spent three years in Saskatoon before finishing in 1980. This was followed by a fellowship in ophthalmology at McGill University in Montreal. Despite offers from across the country, he decided to "follow his heart" and return home to St. John's in 1982. His years of practicing ophthalmology were busy but fulfilling. Val was a trailblazer in his field, and he influenced and guided many of the colleagues that followed him. He finished his career working in the office of his friend, Dr. Brett Williams, and he loved the staff there and the support from Brett and his wife Nicky. Throughout his life, Val pursued his various interests in music, travel, literature, learning, mentoring others and "verbal repartee", as he liked to call it. Val leaves behind his loving wife Mary, sons Christopher (Lisa), David (Courtney), and Sean (Brook), along with his siblings and in-laws (Ray and Anita MacNeil, Max MacNeil and Bev Carter, Anne and Norm Leger, Jessie Butts and Bill and Sandy Mersch), cousin Richard (Mary) Bennett, other relatives and eight wonderful grandchildren (William, Ian, Pearce, Noah, Cole, Maia, Lia and Kaila). Many special and close friends too numerous to list, but including Allan and Lorraine Bambury, Don and Judy Fitzpatrick, George and Karen Furey, Michael and Diane Griffin and John Lacey. He was particularly close with his grandson Ian Conway, who visited him every summer, and whom he cherished dearly. Val served on countless boards and committees throughout his career, including as a Director on the Board of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) from 1998 to 2002. He was a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Gold and Diamond Jubilee medals. He was also a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery (Ophthalmology) at Memorial University's Faculty of Medicine. The family wishes to pass along its sincere thanks and gratitude to Dr. Bryan Curtis and to Dr. Alex Mathieson and all of the staff on 4 North B at the Health Sciences Centre for the exceptional care and attention that they provided. In accordance with Val's wishes, cremation has taken place. Please visit Caul's Funeral Home's website (www.cauls.ca) to leave and view messages for the family. There will be no visitation or memorial gathering until all of Val's sons and family can return home to be together. Further details will be provided at that time. In lieu of flowers, please consider attending or supporting the South Coast Arts Festival, which takes place in St. Jacques, NL, each August (www.facebook.com/scafstjacques). As many have kindly said with a smile, "they broke the mold when they made Val". His wonderful humour, insight and love will live on forever in our hearts and souls. So join us in celebrating an exceptional life, very well lived as we say goodbye. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference.

COOPER Wilson Garfield (Gary) Passed peacefully away after a long battle with COPD April 16, 2021 in the presence of his loving family at 81 years of age. Leaving to mourn with memories to last a lifetime: loving wife of 63 years, Marjorie, who always came first in his eyes; sons Gary (Sandra), Cal, Derrick (Elizabeth); daughter Debbie (Lloyd); grandchildren Tina, Tiffany, Brittany (all Pop's girls), Angie (Dan), Tammy (Brian), Lloydie (Jovonah); great-grandchildren who he loved to watch grow up: Brady (Shannon), Ethan, Emily, Ryan, Brooklyn, Grayson - he loved them all; and Oreo, his furry friend. Poppy was known for his humour and joking around, always had something to say. He was always a hard-working man, and didn't believe in wasting money. As age crept up on him, it hardly slowed him down, he refused defeat. Always joking and yelling was what he was known for, no back doors at all. He was good to everyone, never see you stuck. And then there's his car. Spic and span, nothing less, done only by him. He simply loved to drive. "C'mon Marge we goes for a run." He would say. He will be dearly missed but forever in our hearts. They just don't make them like Poppy anymore. Our gratitude to the staff of ICU for the kindness and compassion shown to him in his final days. Cremation has taken place. To leave a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com Not goodbye but until we meet again. We're sure you're driving the shiniest car in heaven.

Predeceased by husband Timothy Lewis, parents Mary Alice and Michael Whelan, brothers, sister and in-laws George Whelan, John and Theresa Whelan, Madonna and Aiden Critch, son-in-law Clarence Butt and special friends Michael Moriarity and Rita Hickey. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her sons: Michael (Pam), John, Stanley (Gillian) and Gary (Cathy), daughters: Rosemary and Rolayne (Joe), 14 grandchildren (and partners): Lindsey, Meghan and Jake Bartlett; William, Chelsea, Shane and Christopher Butt; Rick and Rhonda Hayes; Jason, Anthony, Joshua and Victoria Lewis; and Corey Lewis (Erin); 11 great-grandchildren, special furry companion Fluffy, as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends. Mother was both a gentle soul and a force to be reckoned with - she was the heartbeat of our family, and dearly loved her grand and great-grandchildren, leaving us with so many wonderful memories. Originally from Colliers, she left her teaching career to raise her family, moving to Labrador City and eventually residing on Salmonier Line, Holyrood. She always supported the community, volunteering at the Grenfell Hospital, with the Girl Guides of Canada, as President of the Catholic Women's League in Labrador City and as a member of the Star of the Sea and Executive of the Marina Golden Age 50 Plus Club in Holyrood, to name a few. Her beloved Singer sewing machine which she purchased from her first paycheck, kept pace with her until just last year, churning out many quilts, dresses or costumes. She dearly loved music and could play many a tune on her piano until crippled with arthritis; she loved to dance 'close to the floor' on Newfie Nites and have a laugh with her many friends. With interests too numerous to mention, she had a zest for life and was always ready to take on a new adventure, including finally exploring the Labrador coastline while in her eighties. Resting at Dunphy's Funeral Home, Holyrood. Public visitation in keeping with COVID-19 Restrictions will take place on Friday, April 9th from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be private and by invitation only due to Covid-19 Restrictions. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 10th, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. from Holy Cross Church, Holyrood with cremation to follow. The family would like to express gratitude to the Comfort Care Unit nursing staff, 7th Floor West, St. Clare's Mercy Hospital for the gentle care and attention provided to mother in her final days. An avid animal activist and caretaker of many feral cats, in lieu of flowers please consider a donation in her memory to Molly's Dream Cat Rescue at www.molliesdreamtnr.org

In spite of her health challenges, Patricia was never alone as she had the love and support of her dear husband Leo and large family. With a strong desire to live life to the fullest, never a complaint, never a hint of self-pity, she was an inspiration. Patricia did not let her illness define her nor restrict her capacity to enjoy life. She travelled, worked, laughed, cooked, and was a fabulous baker. She raised a beautiful family with Leo and was loved by all. She was very proud of her children. She always encouraged them to be kind, work hard and do their best. She considered them her greatest achievement. Her grandchildren were her shining stars and she loved each one of them with all her heart. O'REILLY David Victor It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of David Victor O'Reilly, age 65, of Springhill, NS. Dave passed away at the Halifax Infirmary on Sunday, April 11, 2021, while surrounded by his family. Born in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Albert and Theresa (Turpin) O'Reilly. Dave loved a job well done. His brothers and sisters felt he was a gentle soul growing up, and joked that he was "the quiet O'Reilly". His brother Robert commented that 'nary a soul on this planet can speak ill of him'. A friendly man, he had countless acquaintances, and if you were his friend, you were his TRUE friend. He was a quiet and methodical man who was satisfied with his life and relished in the simple things. He gained great satisfaction in his carpentry endeavours and was surely and humbly proud of his accomplishments. Well read, thoughtful and well spoken, he was non-judgemental and was accepting of others as others accepted him and enjoyed his company. He cherished a good smoke. Dave's words of advice to his daughters..."It pays to live, see you learn something new every day; One thing you never really learn is how dumb you really are." PENNEY John A. 14 Feb.1942 to 2nd Apr. 2021 It is with great sadness that the family of John A. Penney announce his passing on April 2nd, 2021, when he slipped into an eternal sleep surrounded by loved ones. John came into this world on Valentine's Day and left it on Good Friday. Born in 1942, to George and Mary Penney (née Furey) of Bishop's Falls. John and his siblings Jim (deceased), Jose, Raymond (deceased), Don, Doug, and Cyril (deceased), were raised in what we would now call "hard times." Those times made John who he was. They gave him the grit, determination, and spirit of self-sufficiency that defined his life. Though he was always "careful" with money, he always made sure there was wood for the fire, food in the cupboard, and a good car in the driveway. If John felt something was worth taking care of, he did it with his own hands: it was the only way he could make sure it was done right - and the only way he could be sure he wouldn't get a bill afterwards. John was a life-long learner, always keen to "figure something out," and even keener to share the knowledge. Working on cars was his passion. Wrench in hand, he had that modest, attentive, and skeptical manner we witness in the best mechanics. People would drive from miles around because Johnny knew cars in ways today's mechanics can't even appreciate. He will always be remembered by his sons and grandchildren for his warm smile and great hugs. He could make you laugh in any situation. If he had known he was to pass on Good Friday, he would have told you not to mourn him till Monday and to watch for him Sunday morning - just in case. We will forever cherish his memories and to quote his sayings like "There's nothing stupider than one of those educated fellas." John leaves behind his partner Marlene, his sons Craig and Kurt, and his grandchildren, Danielle, Jonathan, Jasmine and James. In keeping with his wishes, a private cremation will be held at Hoskins Funeral Home. His ashes will be interred on a summer day to be announced, followed by a reception and celebration of life.

Her brothers and sisters: David, wife Karen, Joan and her husband Edwin Rose (I know you'll miss your daily chats uncle Eddy), Father Bill Penney (who was her guardian angel), Anna and Ron (always so proud of your letters and your big heart), Christine and Peter Winters (although you were the baby girl you were always the strongest of the Penney clan) and last but certainly not least her best friend and brother Terry. She loved Terry as if he was her own. Together they shared their beloved dog Blackie whom I promise will be well cared for. Along with Bob came his beautiful girls, Ashley, Kristin (Jordan), Tara and their sweet children: Rae-Rae, Quinn, Lux, Dax and Jordan. The house was always full with little feet and mom loved it. She had several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She always talked about Chrissy working the pandemic in Toronto. Penny, Maggie, Laura and Mary, Mom always spoke about your accomplishments daily. She was so proud. It was only Tuesday she watched a video of Sweet Kathyrn and Michelle and she forced a smile. She was delighted when Melissa and Stephanie came for a visit to Petty Harbour and stayed with her. Mom had a lifelong friends: Glenda Reid, Sadie Perry, Rae and Margaret-Anne McCarthy. You were all her sisters by choice. Also, her friend Fernando Riveras. Many cousins and friends from the Penney and Hartery family. A very special thanks to Cassie Ward for her endless hours with mom. To Mary, Krista, Marie, Abby and Kellie, she sure was a card and appreciated all you ladies. I know you all had some laughs. Her nurses, Kelly and Nicole were just awesome. Her social worker Catherine went above and beyond for mom to see that her last residence was Chancellor Park. And of course, the staff at Chancellor Park, all of you are phenomenal. My mom's stay here at the end of life was beyond spectacular. I couldn't have asked for a better place for her to be in. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Cremation has taken place. PIERCEY Marion Buchan It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Marion Buchan (Kidd) Piercey, at the Health Sciences Centre on April 21, 2021, in her 98th year. Marion was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, January 22, 1924 to John Kidd and Violet (Scott) Kidd. She met her future husband Wallace Piercey during WW II while serving in the Scottish Timber Corps and he being a member of the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit. She sailed to Newfoundland in 1946 and was married at St. Luke's Church, Winterton becoming one of many War Brides who came from overseas. Although a Newfoundlander and later a Canadian, she was always Scottish at heart, and a very proud Scot she was. Her heart soared at the sound of the bagpipes and her music collection contained all the Pipe music she could find. She looked forward to attending War Bride reunions and luncheons, meeting old friends and sharing stories of their adventures as young war brides. Marion was very involved in her community of Winterton her entire life. She was a faithful member of the Anglican Church Women for over 70 years. She served as lay reader in the parish of Heart's Content for 25 years and was still serving in that capacity into her 91st year. She was a woman of great faith and that faith sustained her throughout her life time. She was a lifelong learner who mastered her computer skills in her 90's. She loved keeping in touch by email and even had her own Facebook page. As an avid reader, she loved a good mystery or detective story. Her daily paper brought her great pleasure, not just for the news but the crossword puzzles, Jumble Puzzles and Find a Words that kept her busy every morning. She reveled in a good game of cards and could rarely be beaten in a game of Scrabble. A woman of many talents, she gifted her children and grandchildren with her knitting and crochet handiwork. A debt of gratitude goes to the staff of Karwood Retirement Retreat, which was her home for the past five years. She loved living at Karwood where she made many new friends and was cared for with compassion and kindness. The doctors and nurses of 4 North A at the Health Sciences Centre were angels who saw her through her last 3 weeks. We thank them for their care, compassion and kindness. Mom leaves behind a wonderful legacy. She taught us all many life lessons that we carry with us. Left with great thankfulness for a life well lived and the gift of so many precious memories are her four children: Violet (Gordon) Parrott, Wallace (Jean) Piercey, John (Joyce) Piercey, Fiona (Herb) Legge. Her eight grandchildren: Sarah (Victor), Jeffrey (Lori), Ronalee (Dave), Jason (Alanna), Katherine (Mike), Aaron (Allison), Elizabeth, Stephanie (Brandyn). Her four great grandchildren: Brittany, Bianca, Luke and Callie. Sister-in-law: Sheila Kidd (Yorkshire, England) She is greatly missed by her good friend Josephine Woodfine, Karwood. Also, leaving many nieces and nephews in the Piercey, Pitcher and Downey families. As well as many friends and acquaintances in Winterton. Marion was predeceased by her husband Wallace (1994) and her only brother John (Jack) Kidd, March 30, 2021. Cremation has taken place. Visitation for family and friends will be at Green's Funeral Home, Winterton on Sunday, April 25 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Funeral service will be from St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church, Heart's Content on Monday, April 26 at 2 p.m. All Covid-19 protocols will be observed.
