SKANES, Olive I., R.N. - A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend has been called home to her Lord, Saturday, August 10, 2002. Born February 14, 1939 in Tilton, Newfoundland, Olive grew up on Bell Island and graduated from C.E. Academy in 1958. She received her Registered Nurses training and graduated from the Grace General Hospital, St. John`s in 1961. Olive moved with her family to Nova Scotia in 1965 and lived in Dartmouth for the next 21 years. During this time, she dedicated her life to raising her family and returned to work in 1983 at Oakwood Terrace Nursing Home, Dartmouth. Olive and her husband, Donald, moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1986 but Nova Scotia would always be considered "home". Olive was employed by Marriott`s The Forum Peublo Notre Nursing Home as Day Supervisor and was frequently called "Pueblo Norte`s angel". She was often heard playing the piano and singing a few songs much to the residents delight. She retired from her nursing career at Pueblo Notre in the same responsible position in May 2001. Olive made many lifelong friends along the way touching the hearts of everyone she came in contact with. Olive`s faith, optimism, generosity and love of life were only a few of the gifts she shared with all who knew and loved her. She will always be remembered for her kind and compassionate spirit, quick wit and keen sense of humor. Olive is survived by Donald, her husband of forty years and daughters Donna Jones and Jennifer Gray. Her legacy will also live on through the lives of her three grandchildren: Courtney Jones, Brett Jones and Jared Gray who will always be "Nanny`s treasures". Olive is also survived by her mother Hilda Crane (St. John`s, NF); brother William (New Westminster, BC) and brother Robert (St. Phillip`s, NF). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Olive`s memory to Hospice of the Valley (1510 East Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85041-5656) where angels meet daily to provide an optimum level of comfort and care to terminally ill patients. Many thanks to the staff of Gardiner House for their compassion and outstanding care. Please join us in a Celebration of Olive`s life to be held Monday, August 19, 2002 at 11:00 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth with a reception to follow. Bell Island, Nfld. will be the final resting place, with a graveside service scheduled Thursday, August 22 at 2:30 p.m. Online condolences at www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He re-storeth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name`s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for though art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (Psalm XXIII)
