Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville, on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, Wayne Baker, aged 50 years, of Goobies. Predeceased by daughter Michelle; mom Frances; dad George; nieces Paula and Connie. Left with fond and loving memories his wife Ivy of 30 years; daughter Nicole (Lambert Stacey) of Brampton, Ontario; son Jamie (Tina) of St. Jones Within; sisters: Yvonne (John Daddish) of Dellslow, West Virginia, Shirley (Mike Grant and family) of Stellarton, Nova Scotia, Edith (Dave Soper) of Goobies; brother Melvin (Olive) of Goobies; one special grandchild, Cody, and special nieces and nephews. BARBOUR, Cluny - Passed peacefully away at Health Sciences Centre CCU on Monday, August 18, 2003, Cluny K. Barbour, age 86. Predeceased by wife Olive, April 30, 2001. Left to celebrate his full life are his daughters: Marion (Jim Morris), Jeanette (Jim Williams), Betty (Glenn Andrews); nine much loved grandchildren: Krista (Paul), Michael (Carrie-Lynn), Ren�e (Lou), Lea-Ann (Joey), Tracey (Todd), Jason and Glenn Andrews, Cory and Adam (Nicole) Williams. Idolized great-grandchildren: Alyssa and Sarah Williams, Karly and Madison Williams, Zachary, Sarina and Samuel Carosielli, Joanne and James Minnett, Spencer and Faith Noseworthy, Devon and Emma Andrews. Extra special niece Florence White. Other special nieces and nephews and friends. His two furry pals Rocky and Holly. At his request, cremation has taken place. BASTOW, David Alan - Passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, August 3, 2003 at St. Clare`s Hospital, David Bastow, aged 77. Youngest son of the late Hugh Alan and Mabel Bastow. Predeceased by his beloved wife Susannah (Parsons) and by his brother Gerald H. Beloved father of Andrea (Nevin Sivers) Bracebridge, Ontario and Philip (Janice) of Toronto, and loving grandfather to Mark Bastow. Also leaving to mourn two sisters: Ruth Miller (Herb) and Eileen Martin (Graham); two brothers: Gordon J. (Mardi) and Douglas (Elizabeth); cherished friend of both his late wife and David, Phyllis Hamlyn (Moncton); and by many nieces and nephews throughout the province and nation. David touched many people with whom he sang including The Anglican Cathedral Choir, The St. John`s Choir, The Cathedral Echoes Choir, The Wesley Men`s Choir and many other informal groups throughout his life. We wish to extend our gratitude to the caring staff at St. Clare`s Hospital and the Leonard A. Miller Center and Dr. Al Felix for his care. BENNETT (Moores), Cecily Phyllis, Minden, LA - Funeral services for Cecily Phyllis (Moores) Bennett, 72 will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at the Hill Crest Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Joe Hunter and Rev. Brian Hamilton officiating. Interment will follow in Hill Crest Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at the Hill Crest Funeral Home. Mrs. Bennett entered into rest Sunday, August 17, 2003 in Shreveport, LA. She was a retired registered nurse and a resident of Minden since 1988. Cecily was preceded in death by her son, Walter Bennett; brother, Roy Moores, and her parents. Survivors include her husband of fifty years Thomas W. Bennett; a son, Terry W. Bennett of Fresno, CA; one sister, Pearl Moores of Harbor Grace, NL, Canada; and a granddaughter, Tabitha Guerra of Waskom, TX. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jeremy Bandy, Jimmy Bandy, Jimmy Lindsey, Richard Burk, and Roger Bates. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Patrick Connor, Dr. Roscoe Chan, Dr. Benjamin Ngwyen, and the staff of the Cancer Treatment Center, and third floor staff, of Christus Schumpert Medical Center. CHALKER, James R. - Passed away peacefully in his 91st year surrounded by his loving family. Predeceased by his wife Margaret (nee Butt) and his granddaughter Holly Langin. Leaving to mourn his sons: Richard (Elizabeth) and Tim (Judy); daughter Jill (Cliff Langin); grandchildren: Lynn Puddester, Jim and Vicki Chalker, Glen and Scott Langin, Tim and Meghan Chalker; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister-in-law, Alice Crosbie; very special friend Sandra Elliot; also a large number of nieces and nephews. Fondly known as J.R. by family and friends. He had a fulfilling and extraordinary life. He was a businessman, who was elected to the House of Assembly in 1949 and was a member of the first elected Liberal cabinet under Premier Joseph R. Smallwood and was the last serving member of that cabinet. He was a chartered member and past president of the Kinsmen Club of St. John`s. Past member of St. John`s Masonic Lodge. J.R. was born in St. John`s October 9, 1912, son of James Rich and Mary (Burne). The way he made us all feel very welcome in his beloved home, "The Gizzie" and his sense of humor will be greatly missed by all. Family will be receiving visitors at Carnell`s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. from 7-9 p.m. Monday, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. CLARKE, COISH (Janet W.) (nee Hepburn) - age 80 passed away at Amherst, N.S. August 29, 2003, leaving to mourn loving son Arnot and daughter-in-law Gladys (nee Janes), granddaughters Andrea (Jason McInnis), Susan and Jennifer, sister Christine Worters, Oxford England, sister-in-law Mildred Harris (William, C.A.) and nieces and nephews in England, Newfoundland and Ontario. Predeceased by husband Charles in 1984. Janet was born to Dr. Arnot and Jenny Hepburn in April 24, 1923 Norwich, England and was educated in England. She served in The WAAF (Womens Auxiliary Air Force) as a radar operator during WWII. A British War bride, she became a Newfoundland resident in 1946 and Canadian citizen in 1964. She joined Ayres & Sons Ltd in the early 1960`s as a Personnel Manager, while her husband worked as a manager at Bowring Bros. Ltd. After retiring in the late 1970`s, Janet enjoyed spending time with her family and was an avid reader. Cremation has taken place. Left to mourn his wife of 46 years Betty (nee Breen); five sons: Victor (Wanda), Derek (Paula), Wayne (Denise), Craig (Coraine) and Gary (Johanne); daughter: Karen (Geoff) Paddock; and his nine grandchildren: Nicholas, Chelsea, Meagan, Zachary, Amy, Jennifer, Laura, Shane and Jacob. CRAWFORD, (Sandy) Alexander MacLachlan - Passed away peacefully at Duncan, British Columbia on August 18, 2003. Sandy was born in St. John`s March 21, 1921. He was a crew member (engineer) and the last known survivor of the M.V. Geraldine Mary, torpedoed and sunk by German U-Boat #52, August 4, 1940, in the North Atlantic. The Geraldine Mary was part of a convoy transporting essential supplies to European allies during World War II. Sandy was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Annie (Payn) Crawford; sisters Jessie (Hartman), Jean (Martin), Gert (Coffey) and brother Harry. Leaving to mourn: wife Mabel (Rogers); son Jim (Bonnie [Horwood]); granddaughters: Lynn FitzGerald (Sean); Joanne MacDonald (David) and grandson Sandy (Susan); great-grandchildren Maggie, Alex, Victoria and Spencer FitzGerald; Grace and Emily MacDonald, all of St. John`s and numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends across Canada. At Sandy`s request, cremation has already taken place. GRIFFIN, Mildred Mary - It is with deepest sorrow that we, the children of Mildred Griffin, wish to announced her passing at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Nova Scotia, on August 29 at the age of 71. She passed peacefully into the hands of God with her daughter Peggy Ann at her side. Born in Avondale, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late William John and Elizabeth Meaney. Mildred is survived by her daughter, Peggy Ann (Mark), Nova Scotia; sons Glenn, Manitoba, Garry (Trisha), Manitoba; brothers Aaron (Helen), California, Bill (Helen), California, Con, Newfoundland; sister Tess, Newfoundland and granddaughter Magan Allyn, Manitoba. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers Kevin and Jim; sisters Helen, Mary Ellen, Bride and Margaret. Mom was a loving and devoted mother. She leaves us with her strength, willpower, courage and love. She was an angel of sweetness and her accomplishments throughout her life as a juvenile diabetic should be an inspiration to others. Mom always put her children first. She is now our guardian angel, which is the greatest gift she could have left us. HANLON, Edward Patrick (January 7, 1916 - August 30, 2003)- While in the presence of his family, Edward passed away at the Health Sciences Centre. He has now passed into salvation with his beloved wife Mary Mildred (2002). Edward retired in 1981 from the federal Department of Public Works and Government Services-Heating Section in Pleasantville. Edward (Ned) was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in His Majesty`s Royal Navy from 1939-1945, and was an active member of the Naval Association. Ever cherishing his memory are his four children who will always remember his determination and guidance: Gerard (Sharon McManus), Paul (Carol Wall), Cecelia (Tolson Hynes), Edward (Margaret Whitten). Ed Will be forever in the minds and hearts of his five grandchildren: Brendan (Karen Mills) Hanlon, Edward Hanlon, Kristina (Dave) Reid, Karen Churchill and Keri Churchill, and his three great-grandsons: Tyler, Douglas and Noah Hanlon. Also leaving to mourn, special family members: brother Michael, nephews Larry (Margie), John (Maureen) and Paul (Alice) Connolly, Rose Prowse and family, nephews John and Kevin Coady and dear friends Warren Churchill, Phyllis (Jerry) McClendon and many Naval Association Eastern Command comrades. HOBIN, Alice M. (Power) - Alice was born in St. John`s NL. She was the daughter of Maggie and James Power. Alice was educated in St. Johns and then joined the Women`s Army Core (WAC`s) in 1943. She took part in basic training in Halifax and Ontario. Alice was discharged in 1946 and returned to St. John`s. She again moved to Halifax where she continued her education by studying and receiving a diploma in business. She was then employed by the Federal government. In 1951 she married Arnold Hobin. They have two children, David and Sharon who is married to George Habib in Mississauga. Alice has three terrific grandchildren, Sara, Timothy and Daniel, who will miss her very much. Alice was employed at Sears for many years and was active in provincial and federal politics for the Liberal Party. KIELLY, James Patrick - Of Williamsford and formerly of Bay Roberts, NL. Passed away on August 5, 2003 in his 86th year. Devoted husband of Wendy (nee Thompson); step-son of Annie Stapleton of St. John`s, NL; dear father of Peter (Gaynor), Stephen (Anne), Martin (Diane), Neil (Margaret), Julia, Joanna, Daniel, Jane (Greg), Timothy (Stacy). He will also be missed by his eight grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents, John and Agnes Kielly; his brother John and his sister Patricia. Jim, a veteran of WWII, served with the RAF in Europe, North Africa and Burma. He retired from the airforce in 1962. His love and association with aviation took him to Korea, Singapore, Cyprus and Saudi Arabia until finally retiring to Williamsford, Ontario. LOWE, Laura Mealine, RN (nee Tarrant) - Surrounded by her family and friends, Mealine died at Cambridge Memorial Hospital August 11. Devastated by her loss are her son The Reverend David Lowe; daughter Jean Morton (Robert); her beloved grandchildren: Laura, Andrew, James and Emily; and her special "daughters": Marjorie Lethbridge and Bonnie Hamil. Mealine is reunited in the communion circle with her parents: George and Mary Tarrant; her brothers: Norman, George, and John; and her sister Lillian Hahn. Born at Bell Island, in 1926, Mealine`s nursing career spanned five decades. She treated the victims of the Springhill mining disaster, worked at Women`s College Hospital, held various Public Health positions in Newfoundland and Ontario, and near the end of her career, served in several administrative appointments. Mealine enjoyed an active retirement as a doting Nana, and volunteering with the Cambridge Hospice Society and the Out of the Cold Program. In her final illness, Mealine was sustained by the love and care of her large extended family and many good friends, with whose help she danced. Funeral services were held at St. Paul`s Lutheran Church in Cambridge on August 15, 2003. Interment will be at Bell Island at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Out of the Cold Program or the Lisaard House in Cambridge, Ontario, would be greatly appreciated by the family.

MASSE, Berard - Tecumseh Michigan, Bernard Masse, 71, of Tecumseh, formerly of Nashua, New Hampshire, passed away August 16, 2003, at the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor. He was born March 23, 1932, in Belcourt, North Dakota, the only child of Napoleon and Simone (Lariviere) Masse. In 1955, he married Catherine E. Kelly of St. John`s, Newfoundland. He earned his bachelor`s and master`s degrees from North Dakota State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Dr. Masse began his career as a teacher in Comstock, Minnesota in 1953, then entered the United States Air Force and was stationed at Pepperrell Air Force Base in St. John`s. Upon leaving the air force, he began teaching at Cantrick Junior High School in Monroe, Michigan. He served as elementary/junior high principal in Hudson, Michigan and was named principal of Munster High School, Munster, Indiana (1964-67). He became Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Fairfield, Connecticut (1969-73). He was named Superintendent of Schools in Nashua, New Hampshire, in 1973 and served the district for 22 years, retiring in 1995. In 1991, Dr. Masse was named New Hampshire`s State Superintendent of the Year. In 1995, he was named Citizen of the Year by the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce. Also in 1995, the Nashua Board of Education honored him by naming the central office the "Berard Masse School Administration Building." In 2002 he received the Humanitarian Award from the Nashua Charitible Trust Foundation. He was a radio show host on Nashua`s WMVU`s "Spotlight on Education" (1993-96). After retirement, he worked as a part-time educational consultant. He has served on numerous boards and committees during his professional career. In addition to his wife, Catherine "Kay", he is survived by his son Paul of Eagle Lake, Maine; and daughter, Nicole (John) McLean of Colorado, and four grandchildren: Shannon, Ryan, Lori and Kevin McLean. He was preceded in death by his parents.

NEWMAN, Elizabeth F.M. (Nee - Manuel) R.N.- November 20, 1940 - August 14, 2003. Mrs. Elizabeth Newman of Stony Plain, Alberta passed away after a brief battle with cancer at the age of 62 years. She was a woman who had a passion for living, a devotion to her family, a sharp and quick wit, and a sense of honesty and justice not easily found these days.Elizabeth is survived by her loving family: Don her husband; daughter Margo (Jim) Lovrod, Stony Plain, AB; grandsons: Keiffer and Ian; son Donald M. (Stephanie), Surrey, BC; granddaughters: Brittany and Madison; and, son Grant, Kugluktuk, NU; granddaughter Ashley; two brothers: Alfred (Eleanor) Manuel, Twillingate, NL and James (Marina) Manuel, Slave Lake, AB; several nieces, nephews and her special friend Margo Evans, St. John`s, NL. In addition, she leaves behind many friends from Newfoundland to the Northwest Territories and several "honourary children" who received her love and affection during childcare over 14 years, while in the Territories. The family wishes to extend their grateful thanks for the wonderful care Elizabeth received at Stony Plain Hospital by the staff, nurses Brenda and Cathy, and particularly Dr. Allen Bailey. SHEPPARD, Karl Oscar - WWII Veteran Service # 2971 Brig Bay, NL - It is with great sadness the family of Karl Oscar Sheppard announce his passing on August 9, 2003 at the Health Science Centre in St. John`s, NL at the age of 90 years. He will be sadly missed by three sons, Cyril of Port Saunders, Harris (Marie) of Labrador City, and Maurice (Diane) of St. John`s; five grandchildren, Colin, Olga (Trevor), Edna (Jeff), Todd (Roxanne) and Tracey (Bruce); seven great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Joelle, Patrick, Bobbie, Jamie, Derrick and Brooke; two sisters, Mary-Anne of Mianisburg, Ohio, USA and Sinnett of Cupids, NL, sisters-in-law Margaret, Hepsey and Jonnie of Brig Bay. He also leaves to mourn brothers and sisters-in-law Maurice and Margaret Telford; Charlie and Pearl Little and Jim Irving all of Rowanburn, Scotland and numerous other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his first wife Edna, his second wife Margaret; one son, Colin, seven brothers Thomas, Norman, Garfield, Maxwell, Heber, Pierce and Wilfred and one sister Clarcey, two daughters-in-law, Betty and Minnie. He was a WWII Veteran who served his country in the Forestry Division in Scotland. He enlisted on July 26, 1940 and was discharged December 18, 1945. After the war he returned home to Brig Bay where he worked as a fisherman and logger. During his later years before retirement he worked as a bait depot operator for the Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans. His first priority was always to ensure he always had three years of firewood on hand. He loved to catch smelt, snare rabbits and pick berries but most loved pastime was to dance to his favorite waltzes. During the past few years he was a resident of the Hoyles Escasoni Home in St. John`s but his heart forever remained in Brig Bay. Visitations will take place on Monday, August 11 and on Tuesday, August 12 at the Church of the Advent in Plum Point. Funeral service will take place on Wednesday, August 13 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Advent in Plum Point. Interment will follow at the Brig Bay Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, flowers graciously accepted or donations may be made to the Hoyle Escasoni Foundation or the Plum Point Church of the Advent Building Fund. He also leaves to mourn brothers and sisters-in-law Maurice and Jean Telford; Charlie and Pearl Little and Jim Irving all of Rowanburn, Scotland and numerous other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his first wife Edna, his second wife Margaret; one son, Colin, seven brothers Thomas, Norman, Garfield, Maxwell, Heber, Pierce and Wilfred and one sister Clarcey, two daughters-in-law, Betty and Minnie. He was a WWII Veteran who served his country in the Forestry Division in Scotland. He enlisted on July 26, 1940 and was discharged December 18, 1945. After the war he returned home to Brig Bay where he worked as a fisherman and logger. During his later years before retirement he worked as a bait depot operator for the Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans. His first priority was always to ensure he always had three years of firewood on hand. He loved to catch smelt, snare rabbits and pick berries but his most loved pastime was to dance to his favorite waltzes. During the past few years he was a resident of the Hoyles Escasoni Home in St. John`s but his heart forever remained in Brig Bay. Visitations will take place on Monday, August 11 and on Tuesday, August 12 at the Church of the Advent in Plum Point. Funeral service will take place on Wednesday, August 13 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Advent in Plum Point. Interment will follow at the Brig Bay Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, flowers graciously accepted or donations may be made to the Hoyles Escasoni Foundation or the Plum Point Church of the Advent Building Fund. Lovingly remembers by sisters Blanche (John) Preston, Clarenville and Lillian (late Simeon) Goodyear, Bonavista; her sister-in-law, Bertha (late Raymond) Dyke, Bonavista; the Wells extended family, mostly of St. John`s and a large circle of nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Predeceased by her husband, Olsen Wells (March 1975), her sister, Evelyn (late Lawrence) Stanley, Raymond and Wilson (late Verna) Dyke. "Aunt Jessie", as she was known to most, was loved and admired by all who knew her for her kindness, love of life and determination. Predeceased by her daughter Maureen, brothers: Edward, Francis, Jerome, John, James, Kevin, Ronald and Thomas, her sisters: Margaret, Helen and Veronica and her great-grandson Christopher. Mrs. Windsor was born in St. John`s, NL, March 9, 1920. She came to St. Catharines in 1965 where she operated Villa Maria Nursing Home until her retirement. WOODFINE, Elizabeth (Betty) (nee Hickey) - Aged 91, of Brooklyn, NY, formerly for Harbour Main. Passed away on August 13, 2003 in Nyack, NY after a short period of illness. She is survived by her children: John (Jack) and daughter-in-law Marilyn of Fairfax, VA; daughter Muriel Seiler (John) of New City, NY; and sister Mary (Molly) Hayes of Brooklyn, NY; also left to mourn are seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband John (Jack) formerly of Northern Bay; her mother Margaret Hickey of Harbour Main; brothers: Simon (Mina) of St. Catharines, ON and Florida, Raymond (Nell) of Harbour Main; and sister Rita Power (Joe) of Harbour Main. The family appreciates the expressions of sympathy from all of her friends both in Newfoundland and NY. Burial was from St. Michael`s RC, Brooklyn with interment at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
She returned home to Northern Bay every summer for over forty years and has now completed the final trip home.
