Mr. Bursey was a long time resident of Saugus and St. Pete Beach. He enjoyed a long career as a union iron worker, as a member of Local #7 in Boston. Known for having a kind, compassionate spirit, and willingness to help others, he had many friends and a family who loved him. He will be deeply missed. BUTT, William John  - Passed peacefully away on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, William John Butt, aged 90 years. Born in Crocker's Cove, Carbonear. Only child of Frances (Pike) and Joseph Butt. Many people will remember John from his career and community service in many parts of Nfld. He began his career at the age of 16 as a school teacher at Burgeo and Monroe, T.B. At 18, he entered the United Church ministry, serving at Sunnyside, T.B., Freshwater, C.B., Herring Neck and Moreton's Harbour. John highly valued education, later attending Memorial University College before graduating from McGill University (B.A. 1943). After returning to Nfld. he served on the first council Town of Deer Lake. In 1951 John began a 30 year career in hospital administration, first at the Sanitorium and later Western Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook and from 1966 at the Janeway Child Health Centre in St. John's until he retired in 1982. In Corner Brook John served as chairman of the Board of Stewards of the First United Church and president of the Lion's Club. In St. John's he was a director, then president of the Nfld. Hospital Association and a founding member of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives. He was a member of the Masonic Society for over 60 years, laterly Lodge Tasker. John is well known for his great interest in Nfld. history and genealogy. In 1977 he was awarded the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal. FURLONG, Loretta (nee Flynn) - (1911 - 2008). Loretta was born to John and Josephine Flynn (Byrne) of Boncloddy Street, St. John's, NL on July 27, 1911. It was here that she learned to play, pray and help out at home and in her father's cooper shop as did her three older sisters: Irene (George Martin), Madge (Marty Spry) and Marie (Charlie Kent); and her two brothers: Mike (May Wheeler) and Jack (Ermelina O'Connor). Loretta attended Our Lady of Mercy School where she studied a variety of subjects, played the piano, sang in choirs, danced on stage and performed in musicals such as "Veronica's Veil" and "Pilot's Daughter." Eventually, like four of her siblings, Loretta moved to the USA to find work. Following a period of employment in Philadelphia (Bell Telephone Company) she returned to St. John's to help care for her mother. It was here that she married Edward Furlong (deceased) and raised eight children: Edward (Eleanor Carew), Robert (Catherine Prowse), Eleanor (deceased), Pat (Erica Noonan), Dennis (Pierrette Arsenault), Madelyn (Tom Doody), Garry (Marina Collier) and Dolores. Loretta was a loving, affirming and energetic wife, mother and friend. She was especially animated and energized by the academic, athletic and personal successes of her seven children, seventeen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Her tireless preparation, hand knit creations and audible support would make "farther, faster and higher" a great possibility for childhood challenges such as academic events, music festivals and sports days. Loretta passed away peacefully at the age of 97 in her Fredericton residence on Wednesday, August 20, 2008. She will be greatly missed by her sister-in-law Margaret (Fred Whitten), her large family, many friends and wonderful care givers. Loretta's life was full of love, laughter and music. GILL, Arthur W.M., C.D. - With his loving family by his side on Saturday, August 23, 2008. Art served his country for 37 years, 20 with the Royal Canadian Navy and 17 with the Department of National Defence. Originally from Fogo Nfld, Art served in Halifax, San Diego, Burlington, Ottawa and on several Naval Ships before retiring to Iroquois, Ontario. Art is predeceased by his wife the former Ivy Bonnell and his sister Iris King; survived by his siblings Georgia Peterson, Doreen Cuff and Neil Gill; and children Valerie Ryan, Roma Glynn, Cindy Gill and Gerry Gill; grandchildren Lorna Murray, Andy Linfield, Dorianne Powell, Shea Dougherty-Gill, Rebecca, Clint and Lee Ryan; great-grandchildren Jordan, Jenna and Jewel Murray. With the help of copious amounts of Tabasco sauce Art defied the odds again and again, living his life on his own terms to the very end. LAWSON, Roberta Elizabeth - It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the sudden passing of our "Beth" on August 19, 2008. Beth was a loving mother, partner, daughter and sister. Beth moved to Ontario where she completed a Certificate of Business Management at Ryerson University and later moved to Calgary where she successfully obtained the Certified Management Accountant designation. Beth will be missed by a wide circle of friends as everyone fell in love with Beth's warm and vibrant nature the moment they met her. Beth will always be remembered for the way that she put the needs of others before her own, her perseverance and hard work, but most of all, we will remember the way that she made us laugh.  Funeral services took place on August 24, 2008, at McInnis and Holloway, Park Memorial Chapel, Calgary, Alberta.  Beth has been buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Vancouver, B.C. where she will remain close to her family.

MCDONALD, Millicent Ruby (Oliver) 1915-2008 - Entered into eternal rest at St. Luke's Home in her 93^rd year on August 19, 2008. Predeceased by her loving husband Gerald J. McDonald, 2002, mother Grace Oliver (Rideout), father William George Oliver, sister Catherine Thurman and brothers: George, Les and Bill Oliver. Leaving to mourn her four children: Gerry McDonald, Sonyia Fitzpatrick, Ruby (Albert Ball), Stephen (Maryann Fleming); seventeen grandchildren; eighteen great--grandchildren; two godchildren: Olga Hitchen Underhay and Carol Crosby; nephews and nieces and a large circle of other family members and friends. Ruby and Gerald were well respected business people and owners of McDonald's Fruit Stores in St. John's and Mount Pearl for 50+ years. They were one of the first importers of fresh fruit in Newfoundland . Ruby was a woman in business long before it was fashionable to do so. Ruby and Gerald were partners in life and will be partners in eternity. The family would like to thank Dr. Patrick O'Shea, Family Physician, for his many home visits, and Dr. Vaughan-Jackson for his professional care at St. Luke's Home and the nursing staff, caregivers and all other staff members of St. Luke's who made Ruby's last days comfortable with their compassionate care and love while attending to her every need. We the family are truly grateful. We would like to thank the following clergy, Father Walsh (Torbay), Rev. Atkins and Rev. Owen Coffin for their many visits during her illness. Her one great love was her involvement in the Elk's Club, known as the Royal Purple for 49 years. She gave endlessly of her time to this Lodge and the hearing impaired. Ruby helped in the setting up and co-founded the Grand Falls, Corner Brook and Gander Lodges, and served as District Deputy. She served one year as Supreme Honoured Royal Lady for Canada. MURPHY, William  - January 26, 1954 - August 27, 2008. Will passed away peacefully at the age of 54, at Victoria Hospice, with daughter, sister and wife at his side. William Patrick Murphy was born January 26, 1954, in Placentia, Newfoundland. In the mid-70s, Will and Yarrah and their two year old daughter Milo, left Newfoundland, and drove across Canada, finally settling in Victoria. He valued the friendships he made working in television, and went on to make more friends when he decided to complete the degree started at Memorial University in St. John's, by earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Theatre at the University of Victoria. He was the technical director at the Belfry Theatre from 1985 to 1989. Combining his technical abilities and appreciation for the arts, Will then started and ran Laser Works for ten years. He will be remembered for his gentle soul, a quick intelligent wit, and a way of being in the world that was open, warm and non-judgemental. Will was a great story-teller and enormously proud of being from Newfoundland. He talked often of his family and Little Bay, the home of his grandparents. He was proudest of his daughter, who filled his heart, and his granddaughter, a shining light. Accomplishments that gave him great satisfaction included making two cross-Canada motorcycle trips back to Newfoundland and switching out the tranny of an '86 Mazda truck. Will be lovingly remembered by wife Debra; daughter Milo (Ben), granddaughter Maia; his father and mother, William and Ida (nee Conway) Murphy (Placentia, NL); sisters Mary Murphy (Victoria), Patricia (Harold) Fudge (Grand Falls, NL); nephews Harold Jr. and PJ; his Little family headed by Fred and Bev Little (Cobble Hill); his dear Uncle Dougie and Aunt Magdalen (Toronto), and many friends. The family would like to acknowledge and thank Matthew, Will's Community Health nurse, Dr. Murray's assistant, Jessica, and the Victoria Hospice professional team for their dedicated and gentle care of Will and his family. O'NEILL, Mary Mercedes — Passed peacefully away with her family at her side at Palliative Care, L.A. Miller Centre on Saturday August 23, 2008, Miss Mary O'Neill in her 95^th year. Mary was a loving and devoted sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great-aunt, and friend. Born in Bay Roberts, N.L. Many may know Mary from her 45-year teaching career across Newfoundland including St. Teresa's School in St. John's where she retired as vice-principal in 1977. POWER, Margaret Ada (Maggie) - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Margaret Ada Power announce her passing at Hoyles Home on Monday, August 18, 2008 at the age of 95 years. She will be sadly missed by her sister Marie Besco in Toronto, brother-in-law Ed Dunne in St. John's and a large number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers: Joe, Tom, Red, Mike, Louis, Leo and sisters: Beatrice Mary and Dorothea. POWER, Philip Bernard - of Jerseyside (formerly of Pond Head Argentia) died peacefully August 17, 2008 at the Health Sciences Center at the age of 74. "Mr. Fix-it" was a long-time member of UA Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 740. Philip will be remembered as a proud father and grandfather. SKEFFINGTON, Anne - age 62, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2008, at the ICU of Rockyview Hospital in Calgary,  Alberta. She is predeceased by her husband Donald Skeffington and mother Dorothy Nolan,  both of Newfoundland. She was a loving mother to sons, Douglas (Valerie) of  Toronto and Shawn (Lorrie) of Sudbury . She was an adoring Grandmother to five beautiful grandchildren, Emily, Robbie, Allyson, Brendan and Noah. She will be sadly missed by her sisters, Daphne Harnum (Herman) of Whiteway and Jean Flood (Hugh Lister) of Georgetown, and stepfather,  Dennis Nolan of Avondale. She will be forever remembered by a large circle of family and friends, in Newfoundland, Ontario and Alberta. Cremation has taken place and Anne wished to be buried with her mother in Newfoundland.
The centre of Anne's life was always her family and her legacy of love will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her.

ST. CROIX, Clem Joseph - March 21, 1965 - August 27, 2008. It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Clem St. Croix on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at his home in Yellowknife. Clem was a devoted father, brother and friend. His passion for life and sense of humor enriched the lives of all who knew him. Clem was raised in St. Vincent's, St. Mary's Bay, Newfoundland. He went to Yellowknife in 1983 and joined the Yellowknife Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter. After becoming a fulltime firefighter in 1987, he moved through the ranks to Lieutenant and later became Deputy Fire Chief. Illness forced Clem to retire from his successful career in the YK Fire Department. He was a respected and valued public servant to the citizens of Yellowknife for over 20 years. Clem is survived by his daughters Aleta and Kadee, their mother Jacinthe, special friend Suzanne, sister Rose (Bob), brother Joe, brother-in-law Lorne, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Joan and parents Joseph and Geraldine. A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, September 5, 2008 at 2:30 pm at Adlair Aviation hangar in Yellowknife . STOREY, Mrs. Miriam Ruth (nee Irving ) - Passed away peacefully at University Hospital, London, on Monday, August 4, 2008.  She was born in Scotstown, Quebec 1918, attended school there and moved to Ontario to pursue a nursing career.  Miriam graduated from Hamilton General as an R.N. in 1942, was employed as head nurse there until illness forced a career change. After recuperating in California she returned to Hamilton General and then became Matron Co-ordinator of a new Cerebral Palsy rehabilitation centre. She was married in St. John's in 1953, taught nursing in that city, and moved to Winnipeg with her family where she did general duty at the General Hospital . Throughout her life she was a tower of strength to her husband and family and made many friends in Canada and abroad. She is survived by her daughter Miriam Ann, son-in-law Harry Moffat, grandson Andrew and granddaughter Nicola, all of London , and daughter Patricia, son-in-law Neil O'Brien, grandchildren Maureen and Anna Rose also of London . A memorial service will be conducted at Robinson Memorial United Church, 1061 Richmond Street, London, on Friday August 15^th, 2008 at 1:00 pm. TAYLOR, Leah W. - Passed peacefully away after a short illness, at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital in St. John's, in the presence of relatives & friends, Leah Whatley Taylor, spinster, aged 84 years, of Belleoram, Fortune Bay. Predeceased by her parents, Bertha and Philip Taylor, her brother Hulan (2002), and her sister Phyllis (2005). Leah was a teacher during her working life, including time at Bishop Spencer College, St. John's, and St. Lawrence School, Belleoram. TAYLOR, Nathaniel Reginald (Reg) - Formerly of Bell Island, passed peacefully away at the Masonic Park Nursing Home on Friday, August 1, 2008. Reg was a life member of the Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of Newfoundland, the Association of Newfoundland and Land Surveyors, he was also a member of the Masonic Fraternity (Lodge Tasker #454), as well as the Shriners for the past eighty years. VATER, Robert John - 10-23-64 - 08-08-08. It is with great sadness that John has been taken from this world, after a courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 43, at the Cowichan District Hospital, in Duncan B.C. In the West, John leaves behind his beloved wife Monique; his German Shepherds Midnight & Hudson and an extended Desjardins family. From Newfoundland, he leaves behind his daughter Stephanie Anne; mother and parents Harold and Alice; sisters: Gail, Brenda, Olive, and Paula; brothers: Stephen and Larry and numerous nieces and nephews on both the East and West Coasts. John spent more than 25 years of devoted service in the Canadian Military and had recently retired. For this, his everlasting legacy will be honoured in the Field of Honor, National Military Cemetery in Ottawa. John loved and enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, ATVing and most of all his Truck. On numerous occasions he could be heard saying that we should enjoy each day as though it were our last. For this reason he would want all who new him to celebrate his life and remember him with a smile instead of tears. A celebration of his life is being held in Newfoundland at a later date. WOODFORD, Donald Joseph (1934 - 2008) — Passed away peacefully on August 8^th, 2008, at the Health Sciences Complex surrounded by his loving family.  Son of the late William and Jessie (nee Ross) Woodford of St. John's and pre-deceased by brothers Alexander and Gordon. He was a devoted husband of nearly 45 years to Carmel (nee North) and loving father to Donnalee Woodford Copetti (Al), Toronto, and Michael, Ann Arbor, MI. Don was a proud "Poppy" to Alpedio Joseph (AJ) Copetti. He will be deeply missed by sister Irene McDonald and sister-in-law Angela (nee Pretty) as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was a longtime employee of Canada Post. Don gave of himself generously to various voluntary organizations. YORKE, Patricia - Died August 11, 2008, in Saint Vincent's  Nursing Home, Halifax . Born in Carbonear, NL, eldest child of the late James and Kathleen (Forward) Rorke, Pat was the last surviving member of an old and distinguished Newfoundland family. Educated in Carbonear, at Bishop Spencer School for Girls in St. John's, and at Mount Allison Ladies' College in Sackville, N.B., in her early days Pat was a champion tennis player, a skilled pianist and a regular at the ‘Harbour Grace dances' of the late 1930's. She had vivid memories of the Harbour Grace airfield in the days of pioneer transatlantic flight, and of American submarines stationed there, 1941-42.  Employed first in the family business, Rorke Fish & Coal Co. Ltd., Carbonear, she later moved to St. John's to work with Reid Newfoundland Company. After her marriage she lived in St. John's and then briefly in Saint John, N.B., before coming to Halifax in 1949, where she was employed 1956-66 as secretary to the general manager of Eastern Trust Company, and where she resided for the remainder of her long life. A devoted member of St. Matthew's United Church, Halifax, she contributed to congregational life by participating in the Evening Auxiliary. Predeceased by her sister, Yvonne Pratt, and her brother, James E. Rorke, Pat is survived by her daughter, Lois Kathleen Yvonne Yorke (Halifax); grandsons, James Douglas Kernaghan (Halifax) and John Edward Kernaghan (Toronto); and son-in-law, Barry Cahill. Remains have been cremated. Interment to take place at a later date in the United   Church Cemetery, Carbonear, NL. There will be no visitation.
