ERWIN, Thomas Allen
Born: October 9th, 1954
Passed on: August 5th, 2018
Thomas Allen Erwin
, 63, died on August 5, 2018 from surgery complications in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. He was born in Wichita, Kansas on October 9, 1954. Those who knew Tom described him as a kind, gentle and loving spirit who put others before himself. His family was his priority and he loved spending quality time with them. He married his wife and best friend, Kathie, after she proposed to him following a brief two-month courtship. They were married for 41 years and still held hands every day. Together they raised their daughters, Sasha and Karis, to be strong, independent women. He always supported their dreams and crazy adventures. Tom, aka Poppy, loved spending time with his grandchildren and watching them grow in their activities. Tom enjoyed riding his bicycle with his buddies. He completed Bike Across Kansas and Bike Across Missouri several times. He liked wood working, exploring new places and fly-fishing, although he only caught one tiny fish. Learning was a passion of Tom's and he poured himself into nonfiction books. After years of dreaming and research, Tom and Kathie, traveled North America full time in their fifth wheel home during the past year. He enjoyed meeting new people and experiencing local cultures, history and food, including craft beers. Tom graduated from Heights High School in Wichita, Kansas. He earned his Bachelor's in Science degree in Social Work, with a minor in Psychology, from Pittsburg State University. He earned a Master's degree in Counseling at Wichita State University and completed many courses toward a Ph.D. in Informational Technology at Kansas State University. He started his career as a school social worker for Wichita Public Schools. He retired as Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas in May 2017, after 32 years of service. Tom loved his time at Butler where he met so many people who positively impacted his life and the life of his family. Tom was traveling in Newfoundland for two months prior to his death in St. John's, Newfoundland. It is hard to describe the compassion and kindness of the Newfoundland culture. His family feels comforted by the support from thousands of Newfies who have offered lodging, food, transportation and encouraging words to his family. Tom was humbled by the outpouring of love and his wish would be that others mirror the kindness to strangers that his family has been shown. "As wife, a mother, a grandma too,
This is the legacy we have from you,
You taught us love and how to fight,
You gave us strength, you gave us might.
A stronger person would be hard to find,
And in your heart, you were always kind,
You fought for us all in one way or another,
Not just as a wife not just as a mother.
For all of us you gave your best,
Now the time has come for you to rest,
So go in peace, you've earned your sleep,
Your love in our hearts, we'll eternally keep."

GRENNING, Melissa Renee

Passed on: August 3rd, 2018

With broken hearts we mourn the loss of Melissa Renee Grenning. Melissa passed suddenly on August 3, 2018 at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital. Melissa touched many lives in her time on earth. She will be greatly missed by her loving parents Debbie (Newell) and John Grenning, close sisters Nastasha (Keith) and Nicole (Steve), cherished nephews and nieces Connor, Cameron, Jayden, and Georgia, and her large circle of loving family and friends. In a world that is often too busy and insincere, Melissa was a true example of how to live a full life. Although she faced challenges, she lived a rich life full of gratitude and positivity. She deeply loved life and everyone in it. Melissa appreciated the simple things that would go unnoticed to others. She found joy in every day from her beloved Arthur, to dancing with Dad in the kitchen, to holding someone's hand, to nighttime snuggles with Mom. Melissa loved her time at St. Matthews and looked forward to Friendship Club every day. Melissa's smile could light up anyone's heart. In the midst of our sorrow, we simply do not know what we will do without her but find comfort in our memories of Melissa and remembering the joy and love she brought us. Melissa will be missed by everyone who knew her. She was a true inspiration to all in her capacity for embracing love and life. The Grenning family extends their greatest gratitude and thanks to Patience Octavious, all the staff at St. Clare's, especially Dr. Ian Macpherson, Dr. Mark Stefanelli, and all the nurses on 4 West. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home (84 Lemarchant Road, St. John's) with visitation held on August 7 & 8 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral will take place August 9 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Thersea's Church on Mundy Pond Road with reception to follow. Mary, Mom, Nano passed away peacefully on Thursday evening on August 16, 2018 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia with her adoring family by her side. Mom and Dad moved from Corner Brook, Newfoundland to Dartmouth in the spring of 2016 to be closer to their four girls, following many years of love and attention given to them by their only boy. We girls could not have been happier. This move was a gift to us and we have cherished the adventures and family gatherings that ensued - country drives, beach time, pool time. Mom was a lifelong swimmer. Being by or in the water sustained her. While Mom had a few health challenges in the last years of her life, she faced them with dignity and determination. Mary leaves behind her husband of 63 years, Mike; her son, John (Debbie); daughters, Wynne Anne (Joe), Michelle (Bob), Donna (Brent), Catherine (Mike) and grandchildren, Bradley, Samantha, Jake, Hannah and Andrew. RITEMAN, Dr. Philip
Born: February 14th, 1922
Passed on: August 8th, 2018

Born February 14th 1922, Dr. Philip Riteman passed peacefully away on the morning of Wednesday August 8th. He is survived by his wife of 69 years Dorothy Fay Riteman (nee Smilestein) with sons, Larry and Robert Riteman. Funeral services will be at Chruikshank's at 2 PM August 9th. Philip Riteman was born in Poland where he and his family fell into the hands of the Nazis. He was the sole survivor to witness their defeat in 1945. Throughout the war he was prisoner 98706 in Auschwitz, Birkeneau, Sachsenhausen, Oranineburg, Dachau, and Lansburg. Liberated by the American VIIth Army in May 1945 he made his way to surviving relatives in Newfoundland. In Newfoundland he built up an import trading company and expanded his operations to Halifax in 1979. In 1988, recognizing the need to counter some who claimed that what the German Nazis had done was exaggerated or didn't happen at all, he started to speak in schools to bring to a younger generation the knowledge of how humans can be betrayed and turned, depraved by the power of hate. But his message was not only focused on the cruelty he suffered, his message was always "that it is better to love than to hate" and "don't let anyone brainwash you". For his activities in schools, churches, and universities he was awarded an Honorary doctorate from Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. Thomas University in Fredericton and St. Mary's University in Halifax. He was also awarded the Order of Nova Scotia, the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Queen's service medal. In lieu of flowers donations in memoriam can be made to either the Atlantic Jewish Council Holocaust Education Fund, or the Canadian Cancer Society.
