Dot was born in Brownsdale, Trinity Bay, NL and was raised by her grandmother, Cecilia Ann Pike. As a young woman, Dot moved to Bay Roberts, NL for a teaching position. They were blessed with two daughters: Evelyn and Carol. Later, the family would grow to include three grandchildren. She taught at Bay Roberts Amalgamated School for several years. She kept a busy schedule with the Women's Institute, the local Quilting Club, the 50+ Club as well as making the time to do her daily walks with friends. In 2009, Dot made the decision to sell the home in Bay Roberts and move to Nova Scotia to live with Carol. She suffered from Kidney Disease and would require dialysis 3 times per week. For the past 8 years, Dot visited the Dickson Building, Halifax for her regular dialysis sessions. The Doctors and Nurses there became a "second family" to her and their kindness and efforts will forever be remembered! Thank you! Dot was predeceased by her husband Eric in 1995. She is survived by her two daughters: Evelyn (Simon Mark McGregor), and Carol Bradbury (Clem Licyayo); 3 grandchildren: Avery Young (Jen Bartlett), Stefan Young (Stephane Pesant-Young); Kristin (James Sonfield); and 4 great-grandchildren: Meagan Young (Josh Gavin), Alison Young (Chris Phipps), Jude Sonfield and Eva Sonfield; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. BREEN Gordon Henry Our hearts are broken to announce the passing of a wonderful man, Gordon Breen, aka Mr. Baseball. After a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease and a recent battle with Cancer, Gordon left this world on Friday August 21, 2020 to rejoin the love of his life, his wife Maggie (Keiley) who passed away in 1992. Life without her has never been the same for him, and life without both of them will not be the same for all their 7 children, 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Left with precious memories are Daughters: Petria Rossiter (Bill), Connie Westcott (Craig), and Jane Healey (Terry); Sons: Doug Breen, Larry Breen (Joan), Don Breen (Patricia) and Terry Breen (Deanna). Grandchildren: Natasha Rossiter Barron (Matt), Terri Breen (Jamie Markle), Eddie Rossiter, Jennie Breen, Katie Breen, Steven Healey, Nick Breen, Zach Westcott, Jacob Westcott, Greg Healey, Sarah-Jayne Breen, Feather Breen, Sydney Breen and Emma Breen. And poppy's precious babies, his great-granddaughters: Kenzie Barron, Amaya Barron and Emelia Markle Breen. Born March 2, 1928 to Elizabeth and John Breen, Gordon grew up in the west end of St. John's with his siblings Mike (Florence), Alf (Joan), and Molly (Gus Collins). Both Mike and Alf as well as infant brother Billy have gone before him. Gordon was a Holy Cross man through and through and although Alzheimer's took a lot from him, he sang the Holy Cross Crusaders song almost 'til the day he died. He was a man of strong faith throughout his life. He met and married Margaret Keiley in 1957 and joined a family that became very special to him; his mother and father-in-law Larry and Ethel Keiley, sisters-in-law: Sr. Regina Patricia Keiley, Agnes Chafe (Kevin), Jean Heffernan (Pat) and Myna Mulrooney (Des); as well as brothers-in-law: Peter Keiley (Mary), and Larry Keiley (Mary). Regina, Agnes and Peter have left this world as well. Gordon's other love was sports. The baseball diamond is where he excelled as a player and a coach, but he was also a player and/or coach in soccer, hockey, basketball, softball, golf and bowling. He was inducted into 5 sport-related Hall of Fames in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador and had been presented many awards and certificates for Volunteerism. Between having such an involvement in the sporting community and having 7 children at home, we don't know where he had the time to work! But he did; he spent some 32 years with CN Railroad and CN Marine and retired at the age of 55. Many other family members and friends, too numerous to mention by name, are left with fond memories as well. Very special thanks go out to the amazing 3 South West unit staff at Pleasantview Towers. You are angels on earth and we will be forever grateful to you. As per his request, Gordon has been cremated and his ashes will be resting at Caul's Funeral Home, Lemarchant Road on Monday, August 24 from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 gathering restrictions, his funeral service will be held for family members only at the Caul's Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at 11 a.m. and can be viewed at www.cauls.ca He will be laid to rest alongside his wife at St. Kevin's Cemetery in the Goulds following the funeral. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Donations in Gordon's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Society of NL, the NL Cancer Society or to a charity of one's choice.

CHAPLIN (George) Murray Feb. 4, 1937 - Aug. 30, 2020 It is with heavy hearts and immense sadness that the family of (George) Murray Chaplin announce his passing on August 30, 2020. Murray was born to Max and Jean Chaplin on Gilbert Street on February 4, 1937. Murray first gained fame in 1949 when he was photographed holding the Newfoundland flag the day after the province joined Confederation. Murray was 12 years old at the time. The store was owned by Thomas Whelan who was opposed to Confederation and viewed March 31, 1949 as a day of mourning. Murray was in the store at the time and Mr. Whelan asked Murray to climb up on the fence and hold up the Newfoundland flag as there was no wind when the famous photograph was taken. The iconic 'We Let The Old Flag Fall' photograph with Murray has become a widely circulated photograph since that time. Murray enjoyed a long and successful career with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans with the Government of Canada. Besides his family, his true love was sports. Murray was an athlete, a baseball and hockey coach with the Guards and Celtics, and a long time Board Member with the Twin Rinks (Avalon Arena Association). His commitment to sports was recognized in 1989, when Murray was inducted into the St. John's Baseball Hall for Fame in the Builder Category. Murray was best known for his avid volunteerism. He was a long-standing member of the Rotary Club of St. John's, and received the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow from Rotary International. Murray was the President of the St. John's Maple Leafs Booster Club and Chair of the Maple Leafs Foundation followed by being a St. John's Icecaps Foundation Member and later as a member of Newfoundland Growlers Booster Club. Never missing a night since 1991, Murray coordinated and sold 50/50 tickets with a team of volunteers. As noted in The Telegram on April 17, 2017, Murray has been 'taking in, and giving out, lots of money over the years.' It was because of the overwhelming success of the 50/50 fundraising efforts since 1991, that substantial money was raised and subsequently donated to hundreds of charities. The family was proud to share Murray with the greater community at Mile One, for the benefit of so many worthwhile causes. Murray was a devoted husband and beloved Dad who inspired his family to work hard, stay grounded and believe that they could accomplish anything they dreamed. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of over 50 years, Geraldine (Donovan), his daughter Carolyn, son Mark and grandson Michael (Mother Natasha Mooney). Murray is also mourned by his brother Neil (Olga), sister Valerie, the Donovan Family: mother-in-law Irene Donovan, Michael (Alice), Brian (Helen), Brenda (Jim), and Jim (Doreen), as well as many nieces, nephews, long-time friends Curtis LeGrow, Eric Winsor, Bob Young, Bob, Peggy and Jaime Cooney, in addition to a large-circle of friends. Murray is predeceased by his infant son Andrew, parents Max and Jean Chaplin, Sister Beverley, and father-in-law Thomas Donovan. As a legacy to Murray living the Rotary Club motto, 'Service Above Self,' the family would gratefully appreciate donations in Murray's memory to either the Jimmy Pratt Memorial Outreach Centre or VOWR. FRELICH Robert J. (Bob) (1938-2020) It is with profound sadness that we announce Bob's sudden passing on Tuesday, August 11. A legend in his own right, Bob will be remembered throughout the province for his musical talent, his sales acumen, and his gregarious personality. With his friend, the late John Bambrick, Bob created the band "The Commanders" when they were just teenagers. For more than 60 years, they joined with other talented musicians to perform at a multitude of weddings, banquets, and political and social events. Bob volunteered for years teaching drumming to the 510 Lions Air Cadets squadron. He was also a successful businessman, having worked in vehicle and real estate sales for a combined 65 years. To know Bob was to love him, he was dedicated to his family and always embodied a youthful enthusiasm for life; he spread laughter to every soul he met. He was the party. Characterized by an incredible optimism, undeniable charm, incorrigible wit, and an unsurpassed work ethic, Bob lived every moment of life to the fullest. We were so blessed to have known him, and we are better human beings because of him. He is truly irreplaceable. GLYNN William George June 28, 1938 - August 7, 2020 An ironically short obituary for a man who loved to chat. Husband, dad, poppy, gardener extraordinaire, avid remote clicker, lover of life William George Glynn left this world for an even better one on August 7, 2020. Bill's favourite days were spent in his garden, where he would talk for hours about his flowers, but could never tell you their names. Dad had the kindest heart and was always up for telling a tale - or hearing yours - and reminiscing about the old days. He lived life as he wished and spent his final months surrounded by beloved friends and family, leaving his wife Margaret, daughters Michelle (Dave) and Sherry (Kenny) and granddaughter Haylee with a lifetime of memories and secret handshakes. Dad will be accepting visitors at Ryan's Funeral Home in Bay Bulls on Tuesday, August 11 from 1-5 PM. Rather than flowers or cards, go out for an ice cream and remember a laugh you shared with our husband, dad and poppy.

GOAKERY Father Charles J. The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Redemptorists in Canada, regret to announce the passing of their brother, Father Charles J. "Bud" Goakery, C.Ss.R, on August 19, 2020, at Victoria Hospital in London ON. "Father Charlie," the eldest son of Charles and Genevieve Goakery, was born in Saint John NB on June 11, 1931. He is predeceased by his late parents and two younger brothers, Robert and Bernard, and survived by his younger sister, Suzanne ("Suzy") Verreau of Edmonton, his late brothers' children, several cousins and a host of good friends and loving parishioners across Canada. Father Charlie's path to priesthood was not a typical one. At fifty, he was still at home caring for his aging parents and working as a bricklayer and stone mason. Only in 1982, after his father's death, did he begin his Theological Studies. In 1984 he formally entered the Redemptorists and, on September 17, 1988, he was ordained a priest at St. Peter's Church in Saint John NB. In the following years, he served in St. Teresa's Parish (St. John's NL), St. Peter's Parish (Saint John NB), St. Lawrence's Parish (St Lawrence NL) and several other outport parishes throughout Newfoundland. When he retired from active ministry, he moved to London ON to work and live at St. Patrick's Parish with fellow Redemptorist, Father David Furlonger. As his medical and physical needs became more burdensome, he moved to Queens Village where he lived happily until his admission to Victoria Hospital where he died on August 19. As a result of the present pandemic, there will be no visitation, but a funeral mass will be celebrated for Father Charlie at St. Patrick's Church in London on Monday, August 31 at 11:00 a.m. His remains will then be taken to Toronto for a service with his brother Redemptorists and, from there, to Alberta for a final service and burial in the Redemptorist plot in Edmonton. Father Charlie was highly-principled, intelligent and hardworking: an accomplished musician, talented artist and gifted preacher sought out by the laity and priests for his down-to-earth advice and gentle wisdom. His jokes, stories and impish grin will be remembered and missed by all who knew him. May God grant him eternal rest.

GWYN Richard Jermy O.C. 1934-2020 Passed away August 15 in Toronto after stoically enduring a long siege with Alzheimer's. Lovingly remembered by his wife, Carol Bishop Gwyn. Predeceased by his parents: Philip Jermy Gwyn and Elizabeth (Betty) (nee Tilley) and his wife of 42 years, Sandra Gwyn (nee Fraser). Survived by his sister, Susannah (Sue) Rooney and his five nephews: John, Julian, Ben (Jenny), Toby (Grainne) and Daniel (Dtang); along with ten great-nieces and nephews including his goddaughter India Rooney, sister-in-law Danielle Fraser (Nick), brother-in-law A.R. (Rory) Harley (Jane) and step-son Joshua McIvor (Frances) and grandchildren: Penelope and Edward. Also survived by countless Gwyn cousins including: Julian, Hugh, Rosemary and Mary-Caroline. Born into a military family at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk on May 26, 1934, Richard spent his early childhood living in Shanghai and India. He attended the Jesuit Stonyhurst College in Lancaster, England followed by Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. Seeking adventure Richard teamed up with a school-chum to visit Canada in the early 1950s and worked in a variety of jobs, perhaps most notably a spell in Newfoundland as door-to-door salesmen, selling a Catholic magazine. Both Richard and his friend met girls working at the Halifax information bureau and both went on to marry their Canadian sweethearts. Richard and Alexandra (Sandra) Fraser wed in 1958, enjoyed 42 years together and a creative literary partnership. Once attached firmly to Canada, Richard launched a journalism career. For the period 1968 to 1973, he was Executive Assistant to the federal Communications Minister the Hon. Eric Kierans and later a Director-General in that department. Returning to his true calling, he rose to the top of journalism. In 1973 he was assigned to The Toronto Star Ottawa's National Press Gallery and from 1985 to 1992 posted to London, England as The Star's foreign correspondent. Beyond his success in newspapers, Richard was widely recognized as a political commentator on radio and tv and had seven books published including biographies of Newfoundland Premier Joey Smallwood, the Unlikely Revolutionary and Pierre Elliott Trudeau, The Northern Magus. His study of post-modern Canada Nationalism Without Walls: The Unbearable Lightness of Being Canadian was cited by the Literary Review of Canada as one of the country's 100 most-important books. Richard dedicated his early retirement years to writing an award-winning two-volume biography of Sir John A. Macdonald of whose track record he approved; he'd have taken exception to recent negative judgements about Canada's first prime minister. A thoroughly old-fashioned English man with a dry, witty sense of humour, Richard enjoyed the company of his good friends and family and was generous in encouraging and mentoring young people. It tickled him to note that although he never attended university, he held five honourary degrees. From 2002 to 2007 Richard was Chancellor of St. Jerome University, Waterloo. Having owned a salt-box house in Eastport, Newfoundland since 1974, Richard built a large community of dear friends there. In particular, NL's literary community appreciates his founding of The Winterset Award, an annual literary prize in honour of his Newfoundland-born wife, Sandra as well as the co-founding of Eastport's annual Winterset in Summer Literary Festival. Cremation followed by a private service has been held. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Richard requested for L'Arche Canada Foundation or Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council.

HILLMAN , OC, MD, LLD, FAAP, FRCP Elizabeth (née Sloman) Feb. 17, 1928 - Aug. 9, 2020 Passed peacefully away at the home of her daughter Dr. Alison Hillman, in Newfoundland. Her memory will be cherished by children Alison, Jamie (Joanne Scarlett), Don (Ruth Kipp), Alan, Elizabeth (Paul Coxworthy), grandchildren Adam Coxworthy and James Purvis, sister Toby Rainey and sister-in-law Elizabeth Waterston plus many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, friends and colleagues around the world. Predeceased by husband Donald, parents Cela and Fred and siblings Bill, Joan (Reid) and Margaret. A trailblazer, she became the first female president of the Medical Council of Canada in 1981. She and her husband were made Officers of the Order of Canada in 1994 for having "consistently used their talents and energy to improve the welfare of children throughout the world." Born in Clinton, Ont., Liz spent her school years with her family in a railway car and mobile schoolhouse that was their home. Her parents taught their family along with the children of trappers, miners and railway workers as the school car moved through Northern Ontario. It would be Liz's only schooling until she entered the University of Western Ontario. When she was eight years old, Liz told her father she was going to be a doctor. Liz completed her MD in 1951, and received postgraduate training at UWO, McGill, Great Ormond Street in London, Harvard and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. While interning in Boston in 1955, she married a fellow pediatrician from Montreal, Donald Hillman. She began her professional career in 1957 at McGill University as Director of the Ambulatory Department at the Montreal Children's Hospital. Liz and Don worked as a formidable team for 51 years until Don's death in 2006. They raised five children, often bringing them on assignments advancing pediatric medical education around the world. In 1969, the family headed to Africa where Liz and Don spent two years at the newly established medical school at the University of Nairobi in Kenya: the family returned for another two years from 1974-76. After 20 years on faculty at the Montreal Children's Hospital, the Hillmans moved to St. John's, Newfoundland, where Liz was professor of pediatrics at Memorial University and Director of Ambulatory Education at the Janeway Child Health Centre. For the next 30 years, based at Memorial, McMaster and the University of Ottawa, Liz and Don continued to work with the Canadian International Development Agency and other agencies on multiple projects in primary pediatric healthcare and medical education in East Africa, Malaysia, Pakistan, and elsewhere. During all these years, Liz's anchor was the small cottage in the Laurentians where she spent happy summers with family and friends, and welcomed many students and colleagues. She loved cats and dogs, and could - and often did - read a book a day. She was an early enthusiast and devotee of e-mail, sending encouraging messages and vivid descriptions of the world she took such joy in sharing. The list of her awards is lengthy, well known and well deserved, but her message to the legion of students and doctors she mentored was a simple one: "Nothing ever turns out as you expect, and you must enjoy every minute together." She had that same message for her Newfoundland and Labrador friends, and lived it as well, with Brian Walsh, Alwynne Furlong, Madonna O'Keefe, Tony Guest, Craig Diamond, Brenda Beresford, Joanna Skillen and Mona Simms - and more. Liz Hillman devoted her life to promoting the health and well-being of children, inspiring others to do the same. She battled Nestlé in the 1970s when the corporation was promoting infant formula over breastfeeding in developing countries. This campaign led to hearings in the Senate and at the World Health Organization, resulting in a new set of marketing rules. In honour of her late husband, Liz Hillman established the Hillman Medical Education Fund to support health education and to foster future leaders in medicine, particularly in East Africa. Donations in memory of Liz Hillman may be made to https://www.rosecharities.ca/category/hillman-fund   On her last day, a day she would have described as "soft," Liz was still smiling, the windows open, as loons called in the distance. Somewhere, there are blueberries to be picked. Condolences are available at http://www.carnells.com

MARSHALL Randolph Graham We are saddened to announce the peaceful departure of Randolph Graham Marshall, our remarkable husband, father, and brother, on August 19, 2020. Randy was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, on February 8, 1956 to Lilian (Greening) and Reginald Marshall. His lifelong career as a pilot, starting at Labrador Airways and Air Nova, gave him the opportunity to add many chapters to his life from all over the world. Randy’s fascination with aviation began at an early age. By the age of 18, he was a flight attendant with Eastern Provincial Airlines (EPA). His ambition to become a pilot led him to the St. John’s flying school, where he earned his pilot’s license. Having achieved the required flight hours and training multiple pupils as an instructor, including his brother Derek, Randy worked as a pilot with Labrador Airways and Air Nova, where he met his wife Anne (Mattatall). Randy then moved to Paris, France, where he flew for TAT, before moving back to Canada and working for Royal Airlines. Randy and Anne made their home in Fall River, where they had their two children, Christopher and Emma. Soon after, Randy’s wanderlust led to him accepting a position as a captain with China Airlines, moving the family to Taiwan in 1999. Randy loved exploring Southeast Asia alongside his family and shared those experiences with his many visitors. He was the host with the most. In 2007, he accepted a position as a captain with Etihad Airways, bringing the family to Abu Dhabi. In 2019, after a 45-year flying career spanning the globe, Randy retired and moved back into the house that he and Anne built in Fall River, NS. Despite living abroad, Randy found it important to make yearly trips back home to visit family both in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Randy’s life was filled with a wide variety of cultures and cuisines, with a particular affinity for wood-fired pizzas. Randy loved to cook for his family, especially his famous slow-simmered chili or brick oven pizza. He always sought out the most authentic dishes on his travels, from a tagine in Morocco to satay in Indonesia. Randy is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Anne (Mattatall) (YHZ); son, Christopher (YHZ); daughter, Emma (Jason Torrico) (ORF); and brother, Derek (YYT). Captain Marshall, you’re cleared for departure. We miss you, you are forever loved.

MARTIN (COLLINS) Patricia Marie 1951-2020 Patricia Marie Martin (Collins), affectionately known as "Teecie", crossed over to Eternal Love surrounded by her husband, son, daughter and sisters on Thursday, August 13, 2020. Born and raised in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of John Collins and Irene Collins (Sullivan). Teecie was an extraordinary person - a loving wife, a caring mother, a cherished sister, and a best friend to many. Patricia will be missed by her husband, John, her son, Christopher, daughter-in-law, Vanessa, her daughter, Melanie, and also by her grandson, Charlie and granddaughter, Lauren. She will be missed by her sisters, Regina McLean and husband Harry, Maureen Callahan and husband Jim, and Donna Hall and husband Greg and brother, Patrick Collins and wife Shirley. She will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews Bradley, Jeff, Amy, Jennifer, Gillian, Jonathan, Allan, Greg and Francis. Teecie's commitment to her Faith was absolute and unshakable and gave her strength all her life and especially during her illnesses over the last few years. Her resilience was a gift to others, and it has inspired the many people who were lucky to be a part of her life. She had a boundless love for other people. Everyone who knew Teecie admired her - and could count on her - as a friend and gifted listener. It was impossible for Teecie to attend an event or travel to a new place without making new connections, to lend a listening ear, and expand her circle of friends. Teecie lived her life in a way that stands as a powerful lesson: that a life lived with an open heart can only be a good one. She will be deeply missed by many. She and her best friend, husband John, were inseparable and shared a love that grew endlessly as they continued to fall in love with each over their 47 years together. There will be a private gathering for family and friends at her home in Moncton, New Brunswick. Funeral to follow in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. Arrangements entrusted to Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton, NB (506-858-1995). Donations to Ray of Hope Needy Kitchen are welcomed, if desired. http://www.rayofhopemoncton.ca/donate.html Online condolences for the family may be shared on Fergusons Funeral Home Facebook page or at www.fergusonsfuneralhome.com

NORMAN Roxena Flossie (nee Endicott) And what is it to work with love? It is to weave the cloth with threads drawn from your heart ... It is to build a house with affection ... It is to sow seeds with tenderness and reap the harvest with joy ... It is to charge all things you fashion with a breath of your own spirit, And to know that all the blessed ... are standing about you and watching. Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet Roxena Flossie Norman (nee Endicott) , the fastest little runner in Sally's Cove, was born the fourth of six children on Sunday, November 12, 1939. Over her 80 years, she traveled around the world, but was always grateful to get back home to her beloved Newfoundland. She left to join her husband Eric and her grandchildren, Emily, Hannah, and Benjamin on Thursday, August 20, 2020. Predeceased by parents: Thomas and Dulcie; as well as beloved sister Jean; and brothers: Coyley and Laudrick. Leaving to love her from this plane are her sisters Eileen (Caines) and Wanda and David (Payne), and her children: Tony and Ann (Hogan), their children: Garron, Lukas, and Rebecca; Dawn and Bruce (Payne); their children: Sally and Alex (Lanoie) and Nicholas; Suzanne and her children; Thomas and Jonah; Bob and Tonya (Hussey), their children: Eric and Olivia. Her grandchildren meant everything to her and she was the proudest grandmother you would likely find. She will also be sadly missed by sister-in-law Evelyn and Ray (Penny); brother-in-law Dan (Norman); as well as a wide circle of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Due to Covid-19 restrictions there will be no visitation and attendance at the funeral service will be limited. Family and friends will be welcome to attend the graveside service at All Saints Cemetery following the funeral service at St. Martins Anglican Cathedral. In lieu of flowers donation in Roxena's memory may be made to Amnesty International Canada or a charity of one's choice. Roxena was the first person in Sally's Cove to complete high school and went on to attend summer school and gain her teaching certificate. This was no small accomplishment in 1956. For an ambitious young woman from a small coastal town, it was not an easy path. Her first teaching assignment, at age 17, was in Stephenville Crossing. She went on to teach in Windsor where she met the love of her life and started her family, choosing to be an at-home mother. Eric was a principal and Rox was a new teacher. It wasn't long before Eric became teasingly called Barnacle Eric because he was "stuck on Rox". Ever a student, after her children were grown, she decided to return to Memorial University to pursue a degree in Education 1985. In 2006 she trained and became certified in Reiki. She never stopped learning; even taking courses recently on how to better use her iPad and social media. She loved her book club and was incredibly well-read. From Maeve Binchy to Isabel Allende to Bryce Courtenay, to Kahlil Gibran to brothers Dan and Lawrence Hill. Non-fiction and fiction, politics, to poetry and prose. Roxena seldom found a book from which she could not find something of value. As social media grew she discovered Facebook and her community of book lovers grew ever wider. A little twitch of her mouth meant some great laughter to come and her sharp and wonderful sense of humour flowed. She could stay up all night talking and laughing with her children or siblings, but would caution that if we laughed too much we might end up crying. Roxena was the green thumb in the family and her house and garden burst with colour and green from early spring to the last falling leaf. She had wonderful turns of phrase. No phone call or conversation was complete without some reference to politics. Despite best efforts to not talk about the "devil" in the States, her great concern about the state of democracy in the world and its impact on global human rights inspired her to speak to the injustices. Together she and Eric worked tirelessly for, and contributed greatly to, the advancement of disability rights provincially, nationally, and internationally. What started as advocacy with the creation of COD (the Consumer Organization of the Disabled) in Gander in the mid-eighties, led to active and change-making roles in national disability rights organizations, illuminating one of her true passions: advocating for equal rights for all. A firm believer in human rights, she was an active member of Amnesty International, and Canadian Crossroads International, establishing a Gander chapter of CCI and working tirelessly fundraising for Amnesty. Mornings in her house always included CBC Radio in the background and you could often hear her commenting to herself about the news. She was an incredibly proud Newfoundlander and despite travelling the world, never found a place that could ever compare to her home. Berry picking and making her jams and freezing fish and moose for the winter kept her whole and connected to our land and sea. She loved the ballads and poetry of Newfoundland. The March Hare was a big part of her life and she looked forward to it each year particularly the re-connection with friends and family. In losing Roxena, those who were closest to her have lost a part of themselves. She will deeply missed.

REEVE Deanne Lynn Deanne Lynn Reeve made the most of her 60 years. She wrapped her arms around as much as she could hold and gratefully shared it with everyone she loved. With a quiet grace and elegance, Deanne slipped away on August 13th, 2020, preferring to rest than fight another day. Born in Newfoundland on May 4th, 1960, 'Little D' was middle child to older sister Connie (Paul) Martell and soon-to-come younger sister Susan (Brent) Parsons. While Deanne was angelic in appearance, her mischievous side was often behind the many shenanigans she and her sisters and friends engaged in. While none could say she was a bad influence, some might argue Deanne didn't always follow the rules. Dee moved to Halifax and began working with prominent lawyer, Ian Palmeter, and followed him when he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. She spent many years by his side. Although Halifax was her home, evidence of a proud Newfoundland heritage was undeniable. Deanne's Jiggs dinner was a staple and her pease pudding - envied. When enjoying a glass of wine, the all-to familiar Newfoundland phrases made their way into her conversations. While Deanne was a mother to all, she learned from the best. Her mother Eliza along with her father Dean currently residing in St. John's, Newfoundland, taught Deanne to appreciate family, to celebrate life and find the joy in the every day. Their constant love and support were evident in the way Deanne moved through life - giving, smiling and loving. She had a special relationship with her niece Kaitlyn (Katie). Deanne delighted in her fierce individuality and soft heart. Dee also kept an eye on the comings and goings of her three nephews Nicholas Parsons (Samantha Keats), Stephen (Renee) Monk and Justin (Lindsay) Monk. She faithfully checked the family share photo page to see the latest posts featuring Carter and Scarlet - Justin and Lindsay's beautiful children. Deanne is also remembered by so many of her extended family living in both Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Dee and her partner Geoff Tivey met at the Shore Club in Hubbards on June 21st of 2008 and built a life together spending many years travelling and wintering in South Beach Miami and enjoying the company of their close friends. While the last chapter of Deanne's life was her most difficult, it was a time those who had been blessed to be in her graces could repay her kindnesses. Her constant companion, full-time care giver and biggest fan Geoff held her hand, wiped her tears and shared her journey. He was there for every emergency trip to the hospital, every dark day - through all the uncertainty and pain - and he bore the full brunt of what cancer can do to a person. Through it all, Deanne fought and fell, rose and fought again, with no use for self-pity. Geoff's son Devin captured her heart from the start. She watched with pride as he matured into the compassionate and generous young man he is today. Geoff's mother Marguerite also adored Dee and asked to convey her love daily. Her Auntie responsibilities extended to the five children of almost-sister Sheri Morgan. She hosted baby showers, attended weddings and never missed a birthday for Ian, Anita, Benjamin, Patrick and Sean. Those who counted Dee as a friend were many. Her Newfoundland gals knew her the longest - Patsy, Heather, Chari and Dianne. In Halifax, Deanne surrounded herself with her "Good Vibe Tribe" which included Sheri, Liz, Vicki, Janet, Michelle, Charlene, Arlene, Julie, Shelley and Bea. They will feel her loss greatly. Special mention to those who gave such compassionate medical care to Deanne, including Dr. Jim Bentley and the staff on 5A at the QEII Hospital, Dr. Anita Smith and our family physician Dr. Finlay Spicer. Thanks also to the nurses at VON (especially Thea and Cadence). Thank you to Dana and Tim at Shoppers Drug Mart and Sarah, our nurse at the N.S. Cancer Clinic and thank you to Rob for his generosity. Dee was light. She was sun and sand. She was ocean and open arms. She was style and elegance. She loved a bargain and a hot plate of fries. She enjoyed her champagne, crosswords and coffee. She was fiercely loyal, tenderly honest and well-dressed 'till the end. Shine on Dee. Memorial donations may be made in Deanne's name to the QEII Foundation "In Memory" specifically Hyperbaric Chamber Department (www.qe2foundation.ca) or Ostomy Halifax Chapter (www.ostomyhalifax.ca)

SPARROW (nee COLLINS) Joan Marie It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our incredible mother, Joan Sparrow (nee Collins), on Saturday evening August 8th. She was serene in her final hours, surrounded by the family she so devotedly loved and in spirit by the family members unable to be present due to current travel restrictions. Our mother's life was filled with tremendous adversity which she courageously overcame time and time again. She was widowed at a very young age and left to raise her six young children. Through her faith in God and love of family and friends, she grew ever more resilient and compassionate through each obstacle she faced. She was a powerful inspiration to everyone fortunate to know her and formed the bedrock of her ever-growing family. She was matriarch to not only her family but her community as well. She gave far more than she received, displaying selflessness and charity throughout her long and productive life. Her life was a testament to the power of love to overcome all and bring joy into this world. She was truly an extraordinary woman of remarkable bravery and strength. She was predeceased by her husband Noel, a man of great integrity, whose memory still casts a long shadow after all these years, her brothers Gus and Doug, and sisters Maureen and Ruth. She leaves with wonderful memories her six children, David (Janet), Michael (Sue), Peter (Sandi), Ann, Susan (John), and John (Ching Lien). Her grandchildren were privileged to share their lives with her; they include Noel, Ryan, Josh, Lucas, Amanda, Alex, Michael, Abby, Suanne, Megan, Nathan, Connor, Sarah, and great grandchildren Miriam and Dawson. She had dozens of nieces and nephews who all remember her strong spirit. Also leaving with warm memories her in laws, Joe and Francie, who saw her through her most challenging times, and the Ashley family who grew up with Mom and provided love and support throughout the years. Our mother's social life was far reaching, it ranged from Greenbelt to Bally Hally, Mary Queen of Peace to her beloved card clubs. She leaves behind an enormous circle of friends and was active in all areas of society. Our mother possessed boundless energy and did all she could to contribute to the well-being and betterment of the community. We are all proud to have shared in her life and are better for it. A celebration of her life will be held with her immediate family at a later date. A private Funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. from Mary Queen of Peace Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to MQP parish church and Stella's Circle.

She was surrounded by loving family members as she slipped into her final sleep after a long struggle with dementia. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Hubert Jr. (Sol) in March of 2010; her sister and dear friend Hazel Power in July of 2016; her son Charles (Chuck) in Fort McMurray in August of 2019; and her grandson Donald Richard Squires in November of 2017. Also her grandson Shawn Squires in Alberta. She also leaves her great-grandchildren in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Alberta as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends. Betty loved her music right to the end and enjoyed wonderful relationships with many friends throughout her life. As the wife of a military man, she had to travel with her young children in tow. She was an independent woman and a working mom who learned to drive in later years. She used that newfound freedom to travel between home and her many activities. She fell in love with square dancing in her middle years and kept her mind sharp with her bridge club. She consistently made one of the world's best carrot cakes, and if you were lucky, she'd tell you the secret of that baking success. Cremation has taken place. Visitation at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road, St. John's, on Monday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. A Funeral Service to celebrate Betty's life will be held on Monday, August 24, 2020 at 2 p.m. from Caul's Chapel. She was a very active and social person, so as a stay at home mother of 3, when she wasn't tending to her children, she could be travelling with Herman meeting new friends or playing tennis at Greenbelt, having Club night with girls or Bridge anywhere she could find a game. WHEELER CD Kenneth William July 31, 1949-August 11, 2020 It is with great sadness and with hearts full of wonderful memories that we announce the passing of Ken Wheeler, age 71, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Gone on ahead and waiting for him are his parents Ken & Greta Wheeler, sister Peggy Ruby, and brother-in-law Bob Farrell. Left with heavy hearts are his daughter Samantha, son-in-law Glenn, granddaughter Rebecca; nephew Will, and Samantha's mother Ada; brothers Gary (Bonnie) and Clarence (Betsy); sisters Barb Farrell and Janice Ryan (Harold), and brother-in-law Gerald Ruby; step-daughters Olivia Hudson (Bogdan Pliner) and Victoria Taylor, as well as a large circle of family and friends. Dad was retired from the Canadian Armed Forces, a career that took him all over the country and around the world. He always spoke of his career with great pride. His career had many different facets each of which introduced us to new places and wonderful people. Dad's fondest memories by far were of his time in Gagetown, in Cyprus on peacekeeping duties, and serving with The Blackwatch and 2RCR. Although it was challenging and dangerous work, it came with great buddies, big adventures and some crazy stories. Reminiscing always put a little sparkle in those beautiful blue eyes. Dad was an avid outdoorsman who never stopped learning. In the early years it was hunting and fishing, and in his later years protecting and nurturing. (Except for squirrels…we all know how he felt about those.) A true conservationist, he was always nursing a wild animal back to health, and feeding the birds or any other critter that happened by, which brought him much happiness. He was a wealth of knowledge, and always made sure to give back more than he took. He was also a wonderful father. A gentle giant, strong and steadfast. A compassionate listener. A man of few words so when he spoke you knew it was worth listening. He always made us feel safe. We always felt like there was nothing he couldn't handle, even on the many adventures that started with him saying "Now, The Lord hates a coward…" As you would expect, these adventures made the best memories. In his later years, upon his return to Newfoundland for the second time, he settled in the Brigus Junction (Bull Pond) cabin area where he was fortunate to again be surrounded by a wonderful group of friends and neighbors. We would like to thank all of you for the care and kindness you extended to Dad in his last few months by checking-in on him, dropping off meals, and helping with firewood. We couldn't possibly list everyone, but know that Dad appreciated every act of kindness. We would like to say a special thank you to Frank and Judy Woolridge, Brenda Power-King and Paul Dawe. You held a special place in Dad's heart, and we are truly thankful for your friendship. The family would also like to thank family doctors Randy Smith and Roxanne Cooper for taking Dad on as a patient in his time of need, and when neither of them truly had room for one more. He appreciated that you both were "old school" and the very best in your field. To Dr. Duffett, thank you for your kindness toward us during Dad's brief time in your care. You are everything a family could dream of in a specialist and you went above and beyond to provide Dad with compassionate and timely care, while making time to keep us family well-informed. Dr. Mary O'Brien and the nursing teams on 5SA and 4NA, thank you for bridging the gap during Dad's time in hospital and working diligently to prepare him for each phase of his journey. Finally, to the ICU team that looked after Dad at the end, thank you for your gentle care and for respecting Dad's wishes. Dad was not a church-goer, nor was he a man for large gatherings and fuss. In keeping with his wishes and abiding with the government restrictions currently in place, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and interment will follow at a later date with a private family ceremony. If you wish to do something in Dad's honour may we suggest you go outside, feed the birds, clean a stream of refuse, sit on a rock and listen to the quiet sounds of nature that he dearly loved. These things would make him smile. Where there is immense grief there was great love. Until we meet again, Dad, I will hold you in my heart.

YOUNG (nee WELLS) Elizabeth Feb. 27, 1937 - Aug. 19, 2020 It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Elizabeth Young at the age of 83. She was born in Central Newfoundland but grew up in Stephenville where she loved to ride the horses on the U.S. base. Elizabeth excelled in school. She attended the Education Program at Memorial University in St. John's and then taught in Grand Falls-Windsor. Subsequently, she attended Nursing School at the General Hospital where she met the love of her life and soulmate, Dr. Robert Young. Education was extremely important to her and she always wanted to attend University which she did late in life, graduating with an Arts Degree from Memorial University. Robert and Elizabeth married in 1957 and had three children - Wayne (wife Cindy Lu Edwards, grandchildren Ian Simms and Kirk Simms [wife Janelle Kelly] and great-grandchildren Dane and Weston); Heather Jacobs, QC (husband Neil Jacobs, QC and grandchildren Matthew and Rebecca); and Ken (wife Lisa Pike-Young and grandchildren Harrison and Ethan). Elizabeth devoted her life to her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She loved to attend NSO concerts, cook, play bridge, ski, read, hike and golf. Her favourite day was Sunday surrounded by her family. Elizabeth loved animals and their home at St. Andrew's Place welcomed many a stray cat and dog. Bob would question if the pet had been in the house for more than an hour to find out if they had another addition to the family. Bette, as she was fondly known by her many friends, loved and lived life to the fullest. She was loyal, interested and passionate in all her encounters. Bette always placed other people's feelings before her own and above all, she loved Bob and her family who dearly loved her in return. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Emergency and ICU at the Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville and especially Dr. Evan Wee. Also, many thanks to Dr. Anne Williams who provided special care to Elizabeth for years. There will be no visitation and cremation has taken place. A private ceremony will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Thursday, September 3, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. with interment at a later date. The link to view the online service for Elizabeth Young will be available at www.carnells.com Donations may be made in Elizabeth's memory to the Gathering Place or the local SPCA.
