ABBOTT Gerald Walter Passed peacefully away at St. Luke's Home in the company of those who loved him, Gerald Walter Abbott, age 70, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. Left with wonderful memories are his wife Ada, step-daughter Samantha (Glenn), their children Rebecca & Will; his brother Don Abbott (Mary), sister Geraldine Tilley, and sister-in-law Clarice; children Scott Abbott (Michelle) & Susan Batten (Jimmy); many nieces, nephews, and other relatives; and many friends including colleagues from his career with the Bank of Montreal, and long-time friends from the Antique Car Club. Gone on ahead and waiting to greet him are his parents Naboth and Annie Belle Abbott, brother David and brother-in-law Rex Tilley. Gerry was a wonderful partner, stepfather/grandfather, brother and friend. He was a kind man with a gentle soul and a soft heart - a true gentleman. He loved life and always tried to see the best in everything and everyone. He had a contagious smile and sense of boyish mischief that we will miss most. He loved antique cars, Nascar, camping, dancing, music, roller skating, long strolls, and any excuse to gather and celebrate. The family would like to thank all the staff at St. Luke's Home, particularly those wingless angels on Pleasant View Terrace for the care and compassion they provided Gerry with these last few years; you made our journey much easier with your steadfast care. In light of the current pandemic situation and considering the age and medical condition of those most likely to gather in Gerry's honor, the family has requested that there be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and interment will happen on a later date during a private family ceremony at Topsail United Cemetery. If you wish to do something in memory of Gerry, may we suggest a donation to St. Luke's Home, the Alzheimer's Society or a charity of your choice. Alternatively, you could take some time to visit someone you know in long-term care. To send a message of condolence, please visit www.hickeysfuneralhome.com "Goodbyes are not forever. Goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean I'll miss you until we meet again."

BEST Ralph B. Nov. 4, 1950 - Dec. 18, 2020 Ralph B. Best, aged 70, of Merasheen Island, Placentia Bay, passed away peacefully at home on December 18th, surrounded by family, after a courageous two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Ralph stayed true to form right up until the end, reminiscing in his final moments about skidoo trips with Lloyd and the boys, driving the California coastline with Margaret, building the cabin in Tors Cove, countless family dinners and the many wonderful parties filled with music and friends. Ralph was a proud Newfoundlander. One of his favourite things to do was to take friends and family (and sometimes complete strangers!) out for a run on the boat so they could admire the splendor of the Atlantic Ocean and our dramatic coastline. Just last year he completed a marine navigation course at the College that he had always wanted to do. His first mate was his granddaughter Maren who started sailing lessons at age 7 and has developed the same love and respect for the water that he had. It has been said that a man's friendships are one of the best measures of his worth. If that is the case, then Ralph was rich indeed. He had so many friendships, all of which he cherished. Ralph loved his career in the insurance industry as a claims manager. His knowledge and connections were unmatched. A highlight for him was his term as national president of the Claims Managers Association and the party he put together for them at the Newfoundland conference. Ralph continued to work right up until the end, attending mediations and settlement conferences just weeks before he passed, working on files in his hospital bed, not because he had to, but because he enjoyed it so much. Most of all though, Ralph was a family man. He was a devoted husband, father, brother and granda. There is nothing Ralph would not do for his family. He loved them with all his heart. Left to mourn are: his loving wife Margaret (Walsh); his daughter Erin Best and her partner Trent Horne; his son Andrew Best, his wife Jenny Gear and their children Maren and Bridget Best; his sister Anita Best and daughter Kate Power; his brother Brian Best (Diane Flynn); his sister Gladys Stacey and family; sister-in-law Cathy Best and her children Tim Best (Ralph's godson) and Sarah Best (Brad Smart); also, the Walsh Family, in particular Elizabeth Walsh and her sons and daughters who were like brothers and sisters to Ralph. Ralph was predeceased by: his father George Frederick Best, his mother Elsie Genevia Best (Reid), his best friend and brother Lloyd Best, his father-in-law Martin Walsh, and his sister-in-law Lucy Costello (Walsh). Ralph's family and especially Margaret wish to thank all the healthcare professionals who helped Ralph along his journey. We were grateful for them every day. Each and every one, without exception, gave him phenomenal care and exhibited tremendous compassion. Visitation will be held at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Sunday, December 20th from 6-9pm and Monday, December 21st from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Due to Covid, the funeral service will be limited to immediate family, but it will be live-streamed on the Carnell's website at 1pm on Tuesday, December 22nd. When Ralph was diagnosed with cancer everyone showed up to share their support. Instead of being sad, Ralph expressed his gratitude to us all. He said he was lucky in life, lucky in family and lucky in friends. We were all lucky to have him. Ralph always celebrated life and would want us to celebrate his. May your next rum and coke be a toast to Ralph! If you wish to send something, in lieu of flowers please send donations to the Tors Cove Cemetery Committee, Tors Cove, A0A 4A0 (e-transfer to hrokeefe@nf.sympatico.ca) or the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation. To send a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com

BRODERICK, Dulcie Marina December 4, 1935 - December 11, 2020 Passed away at her home on Gilbert Street, where she most loved to be, Dulcie Marina Broderick (nee Parsons of Bryant's Cove), aged 85 years. Predeceased by her husband, Bernard Francis (1979), and daughter Marina Loretta Sullivan (2019); her parents: Frank and Dulcie; sisters: Vina, Olive, Gwendolyn, Shirley and Ella; brothers: Herbert (Christina), Ewart, Douglas, Frank, and Allen "Frank", and special friend, Henry Williams. Leaving to mourn are her children; two daughters and one son: Bernadette (Martin Tessier), Vina (John McClintock) and Bernard; two sisters: Betty (Ray) Baggs and Vina (Bruce) Rees, one sister-in-law Jessie (Frank). One son-in-law, Jeffrey A. Sullivan. Eight grandchildren: Olivia (Keven) and Daniel (Camille) Tessier; Victoria (Tyler) McClintock; Justin (Megan), Jeffrey (Matthew) and Marcus Sullivan; and Javelin (Sarah) and Gage Broderick. Also, many nieces and nephews, friends, neighbours, and acquaintances. Our mother had a kind and loving heart and was an example of independence and self-reliance. She passed on these admirable qualities to her four loving children who have always tried to do her proud. We are thankful for her leadership in our lives and in our careers. Her strength made us all into the people, and the parents, that we are today. She was comfortable and happy in her home, which she loved, until the end. She attended to her affairs with a diligence that would rival someone 50 years her junior. We never knew anyone who could count up a list of numbers as fast as our mom. She loved flowers and her garden. Most of all she loved to laugh and have a dance! Our mother walked almost every day, and she met many friends and strangers alike along her path. She always had a smile and a joke for everyone. Her pleasant demeanor brightened many people's lives. We are sure that many will recognize her photo as the lady who walked everywhere, but she loved walking. It gave her the opportunity to meet so many people who really needed her unfailing optimism. She was a woman of faith. She believed in her God and that He would take care of her and welcome her home one day. Her favorite hymn was one of the simplest, "Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong. They are weak, but He is strong." She sang it to us when we were children, and she sang it to us when later, we were older. Dear Mother, we will think of you and miss you every day of our lives. We will meet again one day. Now, you go and join dad, and our sister, Marina. They are waiting for you! Due to COVID-19 there will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held at Carnell's Funeral Home in their Chapel, located at 329 Freshwater Road, on Tuesday, December 29 at 2:30 p.m. with interment to follow in the Anglican Cemetery, 98 Kenmount Road. Attendance is by invitation only. A celebration of Marina's life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. All Is Well Death is nothing at all, I have only slipped into the next room I am I, and you are you Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by my old familiar name, Speak to me in the easy way which you always used Put no difference in your tone, Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was, Let it be spoken without effect, without the trace of shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was, there is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, Just around the corner. All is well.

CONNOLLY William Passed peacefully away on December 5, 2020, William (Bill) Connolly of Flatrock, at the age of 82 years. Predeceased by his parents, Fred and Elizabeth Connolly, and son, Todd Connolly. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 55 years, Josephine (Martin), devoted daughter Tracy (Terry Humber), treasured grandchildren Courtney Tapper-Connolly (Jon Codner), Terri Lynn Humber (Justin Hickey), Tyler Humber, and great-granddaughter Nora Codner. A teacher for 31 years, Bill was an admired educator, and mentor to many students he taught at Holy Cross and St. Pius X School. He especially loved seeing old students and colleagues in retirement. Many in the sporting community consider Bill to be one of the finest ambassadors in our province for the sport of basketball. A highly regarded forward with St. Pat's, Holy Cross and Memorial, he was enshrined into the St. John's Basketball Hall of Fame as a player-builder in 1987. However, it was his work as a floor official where he left his true mark on the game. In an officiating career that spanned decades, Bill officiated at every level - locally, provincially and nationally. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious J. A. Wink Wilcox award of merit for his dedication and contribution to officiating. This award held special significance, as he became the first official from our province to be presented with this national honour. Bill was equally proud to be the first official to be inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association Hall of Fame in 1999. Today, his legacy as an official is recognized through the "Bill Connolly Rookie of the Year Award", given to a first-year provincial referee who demonstrates the potential, commitment, and interest in developing as a floor official. Bill often said he officiated how he played - and that earned him the respect of players, coaches and colleagues. Considered colourful and fair on the court, Bill enjoyed officiating the game he loved. We hope Bill will be remembered as someone who made a valued difference in the lives of the people he encountered as a teacher, coach, athlete, mentor, community leader, and most of all, a friend. Visitation will take place at Caul's Funeral Home in Torbay on Tuesday, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-9:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will occur on Wednesday at St. Michael's Church in Flatrock at 1:00 p.m. Interment at St. Michael's Cemetery, Flatrock. GOSSE, Bella Rose (nee-Frampton)
Published: June 28, 2021

Passed peacefully away on Saturday December 5, 2020, in Halifax, NS, at the age of 85 years. Bella was born in Bay Bulls, NL, but grew up in St John's. Married to Ed Gosse of Whitbourne, they moved to Mount Pearl and raised their daughter Jennifer there. A devoted member of the Church of the Ascension for 40 years, Bella left her home in 2003 to move to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador to be with her daughter and son-in-law. When Jennifer joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2007, Bella began a journey that would involve moving five more times and living in three different provinces. Though she found great joy in meeting so many kind and generous people and being involved in churches and chapels across the country, the nomadic life of the military family took a toll on her health. For the last few years, she struggled with the debilitating effects of dementia. Bella leaves to mourn her daughter Jennifer (Phil Holwell); brother Bill Frampton; brother-in-law Don Chaytor; sisters and brothers-in-law Sylvia Gilbert (Fred), Phyllis Noseworthy (John), Rita Grenier, Gladys Gosse, and Gerry Tulk; many nieces and nephews, including Joanne Simfukwe (Jacob), Edward Chaytor, Sarah Goulding (Scott), Beverly Harper (Danny), Robert Ford (Chandra), Joan Smith (Claude); and most of the Gosse clan in Whitbourne. Nanny Bella cherished her honorary grandson Wesley and delighted in his stories and pictures. Visitation will be held at Barrett's Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl, on Monday June 28 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. JOHNSON (Nee Samms) Lillian Beryl (Boe) August 23, 1931 - December 26, 2020 It is with profound sadness the family of Beryl Johnson (nee Samms) announces her passing. Mom was predeceased by husband Harris Munden Johnson, daughter Myra, her parents Thomas and Lillian Samms, and siblings Jean, Fredrick, Lewis, Eleanor and Georgina. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Cheryl (Bob), Kirk (Maxine) and Todd (Kelly), siblings: Wils (Camile), Hope (Bob), Mim (Jack), Alma (Claude), Calv (Pat.) She is also survived by her grandchildren Bobby, Dave, Shawn, Robin, Jeremy, Daniel, Nathan, Samantha, Kira, Shawn and Melissa as well as by 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Mom also leaves many memories with numerous nieces, nephews, (Aunt Boe), cousins and a lifetime of friends. Born in Buchans, NL Mom spent her early years growing up on the family farm in Howley and it was here that a strong work ethic was instilled in mom as well as the importance of family. Moving to Millertown and then back to the origins of her birth - Buchans, she met, married and started a family with our Father. They raised us with Christian beliefs, strong work ethics, compassion and humour. We are grateful for the examples they provided in the lives they lived and how they raised us, their children. Mom maintained an impeccable home and was a superb cook while also contributing to the family income through various jobs she held within the communities that she lived in over her lifetime. Just as family was important to mom, so too were her friendships and work relationships. Mom noticed people that others might consider unnoteworthy and she befriended them. That was our mom. She worked hard, had an eye for fashion and could be depended on to do her best. She had a great sense of humour regaling family, co-workers, employers and her friends with stories that often included them in her escapades. Mom was as varied as the many jobs she held including cook, salesperson, merchandise buyer, bus agent, and a Sears catalogue agent. She loved buying trips to Montreal and interacting with customers and co-workers at Flight's Restaurant in Buchans. In her spare-time she enjoyed baking, knitting and especially curling both as a curler and a TV watching fan. The Brier was her favorite event of the year. She thought Kevin Koe was so clean looking and of course, she was very proud of Team Gushue! With the impending closure of the Buchans mining operations, mom and dad pulled up stakes and moved to Leaf Rapids in Northern Manitoba. Mom's friendly professional manner, wit and savvy business acumen served her well and helped her to once again excel while building many close and meaningful work and personal relationships. As a bus agent, she loved serving and visiting with clientele and the many bus drivers who came through her bus depot. More often than not, she was just as excited with the purchases she distributed through the Sears catalogue office as the people receiving them. In 1985 mom and dad moved back to NL settling in Glovertown. Not ready to fully retire, Mom and Dad cooked and guided at a fishing lodge in Labrador. We are pretty sure there were many satisfied palettes getting up from those tables after a day of successful fishing and thanks to mom, 5-star dining! She knew how to make you feel special and the kitchen was where she fussed and excelled. Shortly after Dad's death in 1991, Mom moved to Clarenville, NL and independently lived there for the next 15 years. She enjoyed the company of her many visitors - family, friends and friends of family - welcoming them to her little apartment for a cup of tea, a meal or an overnight stay. She fondly shared the visits with us, her children, on our telephone calls or during her annual visits to Manitoba. She entertained us and kept us connected to our NL family and roots. Our mom enjoyed 87+ years of enviable good health, but in the Fall of 2018 Mom suffered a life changing stroke. She came back to Manitoba under the care of Cheryl and Bob with much help from her grandsons Dave and Shawn and their families April and Vicki. Our family is grateful for the care and loving support they provided to mom as her health continued to decline. A sincere thanks to the hospital staff in Clarenville, Thompson and Winnipeg. A special thank you to the home care workers and palliative care nurse in Thompson for the care they provided in mom's final days. We are especially grateful given the unprecedented times we are living and passing in. First and foremost, our mother was a Mom forever. Her love for her children was forever and it was forgiving. Her children know her love for her siblings and their spouses, though quietly expressed, was consistent and true. God bless you mom and God bless us as we continue on with you steadfast in our hearts.

MANTHORNE Herbert David
Sept. 23, 1939 - Dec. 2, 2020

After a prolonged and unforgiving illness, we regretfully announce that Herbert Manthorne died at home on 2 December 2020. Born in Seal Harbour, Nova Scotia to Lena and Alfred, he spent his early life there and attended the local school. He was the eldest of six children in what remains a very close family, and in many ways was a father figure to his siblings after Alfred's passing. He was born and remained through his life a man with insatiable curiosity, outstanding intelligence and wide-ranging talents. It is said that he was able to master anything to which he directed his powerful mind. As a child he used an electrical current to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen and likely delighted in the explosion that occurred when the two came back together. He could be mischievous and as a small toddler locked his then-pregnant Mum in the cellar. Lena had to climb out one of the windows to get back to him. His interest in subjects was as wide-ranging as his talent, and he mastered everything - from gardening and baking to electrical and mechanical innovation and repair to woodworking and photography. He had an astonishing and in-depth knowledge of a diverse range of subjects. He could comment on the clouds and easily predict weather, he knew about geography and history, he knew intricate details of nuclear reactors and wind generators. He built clocks and cottages, baked bread and had an outstanding artistic eye and talent. He truly saw and appreciated everything around him. He was a talented singer and spent many years with Wesley United Church choir. He loved music of all sorts and it was a consistent part of our lives at home. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity and took great pride in that membership, fellowship, and work. Accepted into many different careers, including the RCMP, he eventually chose his path with Otis Elevator Company, for whom he would work for the next 50 years. There was really no mechanical problem he couldn't solve and people often looked to him for guidance in these matters. He worked hard and took long hours of call, often being called away from home on holidays and overnight. He met Marilyn in 1967 and there started a marriage journey like few others. The two were partners in the truest sense of the word, very different people with absolutely unified parenting and family goals. Together they created a warm and cozy home, that most solid of bases on which their children would thrive. To his daughters he was a pillar of strength and inspiration, and a model for the very fabric of their lives. He treated everyone he met with the utmost respect. He was as warm as he was loving, strong and protective. His parenting style reflected his gentle disposition and patience, guiding us with grace and modesty and providing us with a safe home in which we desired nothing. He was consistent and present and ensured that traditions were kept, perhaps unaware of how important they were to us and now to his beloved Grandchildren. Stella, Rylan and Evelyn were blessed with a Grampie that instilled in them his integrity, values and gentle spirit. Even at their young age they are aware of who he was at his core, and his enduring legacy will live on through them. Herb had a cunning sense of humour and with just a look or an eyebrow raise could send people into fits of laughter. He had a disarming personality…one needed to spend only a short time in his presence to know that if he said something, it was worth listening to, and that he was really listening to everything being said. The best moments with Herb were one on one, many have memories of him saying something profoundly meaningful and enlightening (or profoundly funny and grounding) to them, but always in the most discreet way. Herb was a gentle, kind, empathetic and earnest soul. Many who knew him remember the kindness and attention he showed them as children. He was a man of few words, but his actions also spoke for him…the prototypical gentleman, generous to a fault, he offered his arm to ladies, brought flowers to elderly neighbours and lent his technical and artistic talents to people whenever and wherever needed. He was as patient and good as he was kind. He truly lived in the service of others and always remembered the Important things. He was quietly spiritual and believed in a greater meaning in this life. He acceptance the impermanence of our being. That strength would follow him as he faced each and every progressive and searing loss that his illness exacted. He withstood these losses and his decline, the shrinking of his world, and his approaching death in the exact same way he lived - with unbelievable patience, without complaint, with full acceptance and courage, with humility, and with unmatched and awe-inspiring dignity, composure, and grace. His devoted and exceptionally strong wife Marilyn would take on the most honourable duty to him and take care of him at home for the majority of his unfathomable illness. This was made exceptionally more challenging and isolating in the face of current pandemic restrictions. She held him up, literally and figuratively, thereby giving him the greatest gift imaginable. The family is forever in her debt. His life was one well-lived, his death will be greatly mourned, and his legacy will live on through all those privileged enough to have known him. He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 52 years, Marilyn, his cherished daughters Janice and Jillian and sons-in-law Peter Lane and Moe Tabesh, most beloved and dear grandchildren Stella, Rylan, and Evelyn Tabesh, as well as step-grandchildren Jessica and Sara Lane. He will be mourned as well by his sisters and brothers Sheila (Dennis), Brent (Celesta), Linda (Gerald (predeceased)), Warren (Andrea), and Julia; his brother in law Bill Thistle and his sister in law Elizabeth Thistle. He was greatly loved and admired by his sister in law Judy (Thistle) Trahey (predeceased March 2020). He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by many cherished nieces and nephews along with a multitude of friends, colleagues, and admirers. The family would like to thank all those, medical and otherwise, who allowed Herb to stay at home until the end - either through direct care, or through the consistent, unfailing, and inspiring support they have offered our family in our collective time of need. Due to current pandemic restrictions the family has decided to postpone visitation at this time. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date when we can appropriately honour this great man. Donations in his memory may be made to Wesley United Church (http://wesleychurch.ca)

MIDDLETON David Alistair David Alistair Middleton, 61, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away on December 25, 2020 in Corner Brook. David was born on March 6, 1959, in Prince Rupert, BC, to John Watt and Margaret Anderson. As a wee bairn, he immigrated to Aberdeen, Scotland with his mother and was raised there with much help from his paternal grandparents, John and Evelyn Watt, maternal grandmother Finetta Anderson, and aunt Jean Anderson. When his mother remarried, he was adopted by Charles Middleton, and Maureen and Charles became his step-siblings. His father stayed in Canada and when he remarried, Dave gained two half-sisters, Christine and Fiona. In 1977 he graduated from Gordon's College in Aberdeen and after a brief stint studying engineering, where he excelled at having a good time, Dave entered the fish business. While working for J. Marr Seafoods in Hull, England, he and his then wife Tessa May had a daughter, Frances. Dave was given the opportunity in 1984 to establish an office in Halifax, NS, so he, Tessa, and Frances immigrated to Canada. Three years later, their son Andrew was born in Halifax. Dave and his family moved to Corner Brook in 1988 when Bill Barry presented him the opportunity to join Western Coordinators. One of Dave's major career accomplishments was receiving the Canadian Export Award for Fisheries in 1995 with Bill and Karl Sullivan on behalf of the company for their herring sales from all over Atlantic Canada and business with Russia. Dave helped grow the Barry Group Inc. into what it is today and worked there, having a lot of fun and travelling across the world, until his retirement in 2017. He loved the west coast of Newfoundland as it reminded him of Scotland's rugged shores and he found the warmth of the people to be touching. It was also the perfect place to apply his "work hard, play hard" ethic to sports including mountain and road biking, downhill skiing, running, hiking, snowshoeing, and triathlons. His love of sport and the outdoors led him to be a volunteer ski patrol at Marble Mountain for several years as well as to travelling to Moab, Utah to mountain bike with his buddies eight times. David is survived by his siblings and their spouses, his children Frances (Nick Anderson) and Andrew (Savannah Hann), four grandchildren - Mya, Chace, Gabriel, and Jacqueline - and nephew, Oliver. The family wishes to extend their deep gratitude to Lynn Pike, Lucille Crewe, and all of the staff at the Protective Community Residence and Long Term Care in Corner Brook for their support and compassionate care. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.

MOORE Howard Malcolm Passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his loving family on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at the age of 78 years. Predeceased by his mother Doris, father Eric, brother John, and special sister-in-law Barb Gillies. Leaving to mourn with loving memories, the love and light of his life Maureen; daughter Karen (Andrew), son Keith (Jill), sister Paula (Ray) and beloved grandson Asher, who loved his Poppy. He also loved his special nephews Raymond (Michelle), Eric (Nicole) and Stephen (Cindy) as well as many family and friends. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Tyler, who cared for and supported Howard during the last 6 months of his life which provided him with many cherished moments with his family and new grandson. Howard and Maureen were married 54 years. They were not only husband and wife but best friends. Howard was a fighter. He fought a courageous battle with COPD (emphysema) since 2011. He defied all odds and lived with only 17% lung function since this time. Despite innumerable hospitalizations, he continued to amaze us with his strength and courage to not only live for himself but for his loved ones. Howard loved to crack a joke, right until the end. His brilliant sense of humour and sharp wit could always be counted on to bring levity to every conversation and gathering. Throughout his life he was focused on the safety and wellbeing of his wife, children and relatives, and always made sure they knew he was there for them. His greatest joy was taking care of those he loved, and was proud of the family he raised and mentored. Anyone who knew Howard knew his "wheels were always turning" and he "loved it when a plan came together." The course of his illness could definitely not be planned, as COPD is a disease that brings many unwelcome surprises. However, Howard lived each day the best that he could and spent his last days in the comfort of his own home with his family by his side, the best plan he could ask for. Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, with visitation on Sunday, December 20, from 2-4pm & 7-9pm. A private family funeral service will follow on Monday, December 21, 2020. As expressions of sympathy, donations in Howard's memory may be made the NL Lung Association. To leave a message of condolence or memorial tribute, please visit www.barretts.ca

MOORES Carl November 7, 1928 - December 19, 2020 Carl Moores passed away peacefully after a 4-week health setback. Carl was born in Blackhead, Conception Bay, Newfoundland on November 7, 1928, the youngest of six children to Elizabeth Puddester and Oscar Diamond Moores. His siblings were Jack (Mildred), Alec (Maysie), Ruth (Eric) Taylor, Dorothy, and Bert (Gloria) Moores. He went to the local schools where he was taught by his Uncle Douglas Hudson and later by his sister Ruth. In 1943 the family moved to St. John's where he entered the Prince of Wales College in Grade 10 and graduated in 1945, winning the DUX Medal. He went to work in the Bank of Montreal in the St. John's, Curling, and Corner Brook branches. In 1952, he resigned from the Bank and joined his brother Alec at North Eastern Fish Industries, Ltd., Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. Later that year he married Vivian Verge of Curling. In 1953, the Company assigned him to Boston to open a sales office in the Park Square Building in Boston to import and sell frozen fish slabs (now referred to as Cod blocks), used in the production of Fish Fingers (fish sticks). Carl and Vivian moved to Gloucester where 2 sons were born, Ian Wilfred (1954) and Keith Puddester (1957). The imported frozen fish slabs came from Canada aboard bulk frozen cargo vessels and were discharged originally in Boston. It became increasingly more difficult to find space in Boston Harbor for handling the vessels, so Gloucester was identified as a possible port. In 1954, he hired Charles H. Pew of Gloucester, Massachusetts who was well acquainted with Gloucester and in April 1954 the M/V Seneff delivered the first cargo of frozen fish to discharge in Gloucester. Discharge of the vessels was under the leadership of Charlie Pew and Gloucester Stevedoring Company was formed to support this growing business. This new business stimulated the commercial development of wharfs and cold storages in Gloucester which remain active today. In 1960, Carl joined the firm of F.W. Bryce, Inc. of Montreal, representing the frozen fish production of Newfoundland producers including North Eastern Fish Industries. Later, Carl was joined by Michael J. Burke, former Senior Manager with Quincy Market Cold Storage. Mike Burke's cold storage expertise encouraged Carl to build a cold storage facility for his expanding business, which remains the headquarters of F.W. Bryce, Inc. When sons Ian & Keith graduated from College, they joined the family business and continue their involvement to this day. As Gloucester became the most important port for frozen fish from the North Atlantic, ships arrived with cargos from the Faroe Islands, Norway, Scotland and Denmark. The Copenhagen Reefers fleet of ships were servicing this trade and Gloucester Stevedoring Co. handled them exclusively. The Danish crews often required assistance when in port and Carl provided everything from hosting Christmas dinners to hospital visits. In recognition of his humanity in this regard, he was appointed by the Danish Consulate of New York, representing the Prince of Denmark, as the Honorary Assistant Danish Consulate for the New England Region. He held this distinction to the highest honor. In 1994, he married Shirley Locke of Toronto. They joined the Trinity Congregational Church in Gloucester and after retiring from business enjoyed spending the winter months in Cocoa Beach, Florida. He was predeceased by his wives Vivian and Shirley. He leaves behind his sons Ian and his wife Rosanne, Keith and his wife Mary Ellen all of Massachusetts, stepsons Stephen (Kathy), Sheldon (Camas) and Shawn (Jennifer), grandchildren Kirk, Justin (Ashley), Brandi (Eric), Kristen, Ryan, and Todd; step grandchildren Hannah, Emily, Ian, Maggie and Violet; great grandchildren Jemma, Alec, Ian, Lucille, Owen, Tyler, Carter and Wyatt and nieces and nephews.

They say that memories are golden, well maybe that is true, But we never wanted memories, We only wanted you. Your life was love and labour, Your love for your family true, You did your best for all of us, We will always remember you. We sat beside your bedside, Our hearts were crushed and sore, we did our duty to the end, 'til we could do no more. In tears we watched you sinking, We watched you fade away, And though our hearts were breaking, we knew you could not stay. Our lips cannot speak how we loved you, our hearts cannot tell what to say, but God only knows how we miss you, in our home that is lonely today. -Unknown

WHELAN Edward Passed peacefully away on Friday, December 18, 2020 at Carbonear General Hospital surrounded by family, after a short illness. Mr. Edward Whelan, age 91 years, of Harbour Grace. Predeceased by his father and mother: Edward and Helen (nee Connors); step-mother: Catherine (nee English); sisters Marie and Joan. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 60 years, Ruby (nee French); three sons: Eddie (Deanne), Carbonear, Woodley, Toronto, and George (Shelly), Victoria; two daughters, Anne, Carbonear and Helen (Phillip), Bay Roberts; six grandchildren: Edward (Nicole) and Antonia (their mother, Marliese), Alexandra, Rubyanne, Lauren, and Phillip; special friends: Jim Coady and Aidan Moriarty. As well, his two beloved furry friends, Willie and Tommy. Ed was born in Brooklyn, New York to Edward and Helen (Connors) Whelan and they returned to Newfoundland shortly after his birth. At the young age of 11, Ed lost his mother and with his father working away in Argentia he learned quickly to work for himself. In his early 20s, he worked as a taxi driver and travelled throughout the area providing vital transportation to many, including patients to hospital appointments in storms, and doctors and nurses to the sick when most refused to go. While living in Quincy, Massachusetts as a truck driver, Ed saw a Drive-In, and remarked to his wife Ruby, that upon his return to Newfoundland, he would start his own Drive-In business. This idea became reality in Ruby's Drive-In in Harbour Grace in the 1960s. This small Drive-In developed to Ruby's Drive-In and Restaurant, and later to a Mary Brown's store. This developed further to a very successful three store Mary Brown's Franchise and a 46-year association with Mary Brown's. Ed was known for his knowledge of Harbour Grace and its related history. He was often called for information regarding historical events and was interviewed twice by the Conception Bay Museum for their archives. He served on the R.C. Cemetery Committee. His knowledge in this area often helped family from outside the province find the final resting place of loved ones resting in the R.C. Cemetery. Ed was a life-long member of Immaculate Conception Parish and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. His generosity to his parish was significant, and frequently anonymous. Ed worked into his late 80s. He was a very rare individual. What a man, what a life, what a character. He was as hard as nails, with a heart of gold. At Edward's request, cremation has taken place. A private visitation and funeral service to be held at a later date. As an expression of sympathy, donations in his memory may be made to St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, P.O. Box 429, Carbonear, NL, A1Y 1B8, TCP Health Foundation, 86 Highroad South, Carbonear, NL, A1Y 1A4, Baccalieu Trail SPCA, P.O. Box 273, Carbonear, NL, A1Y 1B7 or a charity of one's choice. Mary now joins with those family members who have travelled ahead of her, parents Roy and Nellie O'Brien and baby sister Janet Marie, parents-in-law James and Nan Wright. Cherishing her memory with love are her husband Ian, son Ian Brien (Patricia) and grandkids Caitlin and Brien who adored their grandmother "Sammy", sisters Dorothy (Walter Milley), Maureen (Ted Rowe), Anna (Gerry Tapper), brothers Gord (Rhonda) and Roy (Deanna), brothers-in-law Donald (Glenna), Sandy, and many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and grand nephews. Born and raised on Water Street in St. John's and raised in the home above her father's music store, Mary had great love and affection for her family and music. She had an extraordinary singing voice that would be the envy of the angels. She sang with many choirs in the past, including travelling to Montreal with Sr. Kathrine Bellamy's Expo '67 glee club. She spent many happy summers at the family home in Topsail Pond where she developed her love of nature and wildlife. There, Mary formed friendships with the Topsail Pond crowd who really became a larger extended family every summer. Most important, Topsail Pond brought Ian Into Mary's life, forming a loving relationship in their teens. Mary and Ian were that cool couple... the handsome young Scottish blonde guy with the beautiful long dark-haired girl, together all the time! Mary worked in real estate and life insurance. Most of her career was with WHSCC where she worked with her sister, Anna, for 15 years and formed many special friendships with her work family. Mary loved music, nature, and being in the country. She had a strong faith, especially to the Blessed Virgin Mary. While we feel she was taken from us too young, we cherish the happy times we had with her and we know our very special guardian angel will always look after us. A private service for immediate family will be held on Saturday. Donations in her memory may be made to the RC Basilica of St. John the Baptist, St. John's.
