ANONSEN (nee Powers), Dorothy Carol, R.N., PhD. - Passed peacefully away on Tuesday, February 8th, 2011 with her family at her side. A brilliant and gentle woman with a loving and generous heart. Carol spent her youth in Harbour Grace and Bell Island before going on to a career in nursing education. Throughout her academic career, she still found the time to use her nursing skills on the front lines of nursing by volunteering with the Red Cross disaster program and by setting up parish nursing clinics in her church. Carol is predeceased by her parents Charles and Anna Powers, Cleveland, Ohio and her husband Ronald (Teet) Anonsen. Leaving to mourn her six children: Anne Marie, Maureen, Charlie (Ellen Turpin), Kay, Bill (Michele) and Jim; nine grandchildren: Joseph and Matthew Cooper, Michael Barrett, David and Anna Delaney, William Anonsen, Ron Anonsen and Erik and Colin Anonsen. The family gratefully acknowledges the compassionate care from the staff of St. Patrick's Mercy Home and from Dr. Pat O'Shea. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation Thursday, February 10th from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass on Friday, February 11th at 9:30 a.m. from St. Pius X Church, Smithville Crescent. ANDERSON, Keith Francis - Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Centre on Wednesday, February 9, 2011. Keith Francis Anderson, aged 44 years. Leaving to mourn his three children: Keith Jr., Ashley and Amy and their mother Joan; parents: Patrick (David) and Wilhelmina Anderson; two brothers: David and Todd (Lee); two sisters: Andrea (David) and Ann as well as a large number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation on Sunday from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place on Monday, February 14, 2011 at 10 a.m. from St. Francis of Assisi Church, Outer Cove. Cremation to follow. ASHLEY, Adele Lorraine Carter "Lolly" - age 79 of Greenville, died on February 17, 2011 at Stonegates Nursing Home. Lorraine was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the first child of Harry and Emily Carter. Shortly after her birth her family returned to their home in St. John's, Newfoundland. Lorraine grew up in St John's and was a graduate of the Prince of Wales College. A gifted athlete, she was captain of the field hockey and basketball teams in her junior and senior years. She married Dr. Patrick F. Ashley in 1954. After the wedding, they moved to Wilmington, Delaware where they raised a family, and shared their lives together.
Lorraine was a loving and exceptional wife, mother, and grandmother, and was affectionately known as "Lolly" by her family. Lolly never wavered in her unconditional love and support for her children and grandchildren. She took great pleasure in babysitting and caring for her grandchildren and attending all their events. Her interests included painting, sewing, knitting, traveling and playing tennis. Her remarkable oil paintings are treasured keepsakes for her children and grandchildren. A member of Wilmington Country Club, Lorraine was an avid competitive tennis and paddle tennis player. An outgoing and generous person, Lorraine volunteered for several organizations that supported medical causes. Lolly will be remembered for her sense of humor, stunning fashion style, competitive spirit, and fierce devotion to her family. She inspired her children to never give up and believed that if you set your mind to something and gave it your best, you would succeed. One of her favorite expressions was "There's no such word as can't."
Lorraine was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Dr. Patrick F. Ashley. She is survived by her sisters Elizabeth Skjarum, Joyce Szilagy, and Barbara Rodgers, and her brother Calvin Carter, all of Toronto, Canada.
Lorraine is also survived by her daughter Dr. Adele Ashley-Axon and husband Dr. David Axon of Wilmington, Delaware; her son Dr. Robert A. Ashley and wife Dr. Anne Hayton of North Yarmouth, Maine; her son Patrick M. Ashley and wife Ann Barlow Ashley; her daughter Lisa M. Ashley; and her son Michael W. Ashley and wife Deborah Marine Ashley, all of Wilmington, Delaware. In addition she is survived by twelve grandchildren; Hillary, Shannon and Molly Axon; Emily Makynen; Blakely and Patrick "Trip" Ashley; Alexandra and Stefan Thomas; and Lillie, Samuel, Hutton and Benjamin Ashley.
The Ashley family would like to thank the staff at Stonegates for their loving care of Lolly. A memorial service will be planned in the future. ASHLEY, Caroline - Passed away on 02 February, 2011 B.A., M.A. in divinity - The woman who lays before me, here in her hospital bed is more than just a woman or person, she is (Caroline Davy). She was first someone's daughter and granddaughter, then a girlfriend to Stephen Michael Ashley, then a wife and soon to be mother. Before Caroline became a mother she had a brilliant career with Bell Canada and after her motherhood, Caroline was also a teacher of both Sunday school and regular school. She would and did help anyone she could without using her name. Caroline Davy Ashley took every day head first and was determined to find or plant good in everyone she met and everything she put her hand to. Left to mourn, her husband Stephen Ashley; brother Paul Davy; three children: Caedmon, Oliver and Hilliary and three grandchildren: Jesse (14), Mackenzie (5) and Dillon (8).

BAILEY, Jack - Passed away suddenly at his home in Long Harbour on Feb.10, 2011, Jack Bailey age 63 years. Jack is now joined with his lovely wife Evelyn. Also predeceased by his father Felix and sister Ethel. Leaving to mourn his two daughters: Lorrie, grandchildren Sharleigh and Jack; Charlene, grandchildren Samia and Gavin. BARTLETT, Mabel (nee Chaulk) - Curling, NL, November 6, 1925 - February 10, 2011. Passed peacefully away at Western Memorial Hospital - Mabel Bartlett in her 86th year. BOWERS (nee Clarke), Daisy Elizabeth - Passed peacefully away on February 3, 2011 at Dr. Walter Templeman Hospital, Bell Island, N.L., Daisy Bowers, age 78 years. Leaving to mourn her husband Steadman of 51 years; her children Russell in Calgary and Steadman Jr. (Tracy) in Paradise. Her grandchildren Kathryn and Andrew. One sister Mildred Rideout (Hardy), one brother Wallace and sister-in-law Mary in Spaniard's Bay, N.L. Daisy will be fondly remembered by her many relatives and friends. BUCKNER, Lillian Hussey - age 84, of Hot Springs, passed away, Tuesday, February 14, 2011. She was born November 15, 1926, at St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, to Mr. Isaac and Mrs. Annie Gardener Hussey, and was a naturalized United States Citizen. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Alan Hussey; and three sisters, Nell Snow, Frances Perry and Effie Hussey. Lillian was of the Methodist faith, in both Canada and the United States, but in recent years was unable to attend church services due to ill health. Throughout her working life, she was a highly respected administrative assistant to such people as the United States Air Force Budget and Fiscal Officers in Newfoundland; in St. Louis, Missouri, to a future United States Senator; the president of CBS Radio KMOX; and Modern Language department heads at the University of Missouri - St. Louis; in Hot Springs to the Dean of Students at National Park Community College; at Hot Springs Savings and Loan; to the General Manager of Magic Springs Park; and in clerical and administrative assistant positions at Regions Bank/Arkansas Bank & Trust Company. Lillian is survived by her husband of 61 years, James "Jim" Buckner of Hot Springs; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Jon Beich of Seminole, Florida, and Lori and Larry Martin of Little Rock; granddaughters, Phoebe Moll of Dusseldorf, Germany, Cecily Moll of Orlando, Florida, and Laurel Moll of New York, New York; her sister, Mrs. Dorothy Adams, her daughter, Marion and son, Robert, grandchildren and one great-grandson residing in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada or Australia; her special nephew and niece, Duncan Snow and Judy Saunders, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and her dear friend, Daphne Snow, all from Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, Canada; also family and friends across Canada and the United States. The family would also like to recognize Lillian's special longtime friends, Mrs. Anny Pryor of Champagne, Illinois, and Dr. Marion Holt of New York, New York. BURKE, J. Barry McKinlay - Passed away suddenly on February 14, 2011, Barry Burke, age 69 years. Predeceased by wife Beth (2001). BUTT, George Winsor - 77, Kentville, passed away 23 February, 2011 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, NS, due to Alzheimer's and cancer. Born in Freshwater, Carbonear, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Leonard and Clarissa (Winsor) Butt. A graduate of Prince of Wales College in St. John's, NL, he is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Dorothy (Parsons); son, Doug (Joan) Ottawa, Ontario; daughter: Linda (Irvan) Deveau, Salmon River, Digby Co., NS; brothers: Leonard (Ruth) and Winston (Mary) of St. John's; sisters, Eileen (Gene) Garland and Patricia of St. John's; grandchildren: Katherine (Kentville, NS) & Evan (Ottawa, ON). Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Beryl and Audrey. CHAFE, Dorothy (Dot) (R.N.) - Passed peacefully away at The L.A. Miller Centre on Saturday February 12, 2011, surrounded by her loving family Dot Chafe aged 85 years. Predeceased by her parents Edgar and Fannie and brother Hughie. Left to mourn her loving husband of 54 years Robert (Bob), daughter Denise (Keith Dooley) son Douglas (Rose), 3 grandchildren Jennifer, Rachel and Colin, sister Harriett as well as niece Arlene and family and a large circle of other nieces, nephews relatives and friends. At Dot's request cremation has taken place and her wish was to have no visitation. CHAFE, Harriet Jessie (Haddie) - Haddie passed away suddenly but peacefully on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the age of 83. She is predeceased by her parents, Fanny and Edgar Chafe; her brother, Hughie Chafe; her husband, Eric Chafe; and just last week, her beloved sister, Dorothy Chafe. Haddie leaves to mourn her daughter Arlene Scott and husband Derek; precious grandchildren Morgan and Emily Scott; brother-in-law, Robert Chafe; niece, Denise Chafe and family; nephew, Doug Chafe and family; life long friend and sister-in-law, Vera Chafe and her son Randy Chafe; and a large circle of other relatives and friends as well as her friends and staff at Karwood Retirement Retreat. LANDELLS, Dr. David Gordon - Passed peacefully away in his 87th year on February 28, 2011, in the presence of his two sons. Predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Cullen and his parents Joseph Landells and Janet Ralston. He leaves to mourn his sons: Colin (D'Arcy) and Ian (Lisa); his grandchildren: Catherine, Graham, Fiona and Elizabeth and his sister Joan Wilson of London, UK. Dear family and friends in Newfoundland, Scotland and around the world will also sorely miss him. David was born in Glasgow, Scotland on November 13, 1924 and was educated at Greenock Academy and The University of Glasgow, where he served as President of the Student Representative Council 1944-45, and received his degree in Medicine in 1948. He served as Surgeon-Lieutenant in The Royal Navy 1949-54. In 1958 he immigrated to St. John's, the home of his wife Elizabeth, where he practiced Orthopaedic Surgery for the next 45 years, until his retirement in 2003. He was Chief of Orthopaedics at the Janeway Children's Hospital from its foundation until his retirement, and was one of the founders of the Children's Rehabilitation Centre.
His volunteer activity included The St. John's Rotary Club, where he served as Captain of the Stokers Group. He also served as president of The St. Andrew's Society of Newfoundland. His innovative work in Orthopaedic Surgery was recognized internationally and he served as President of The Canadian Orthopaedic Association 1973-74. He received lifetime achievement awards from The Canadian Orthopaedic Association, The Canadian Medical Association and The Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association.

LONG, Hayward Boyd (John) - It is with great sadness and happy memories that we announce the passing of Hayward Boyd (John) Long in his 82nd year, on Monday, February 28, 2011 due to cancer of the pancreas. His final weeks were spent in his home comforted by the company of those who deeply loved and admired him.
Born on May 17, 1929 in St. John's, Newfoundland he was the cherished son of Jesse (nee Hart) and Arthur Hayward Long. Dear brother of Mary, Doris and his "third sister," Pearl Learning. Predeceased by his wife Eileen (nee Paul) the woman who he loved and cherished from the moment that they met and his eldest son Bruce Arthur Long who he held in fondest memory for all of his days. He is survived by many who loved and were loved by him. Kim, Tracey, Huggie and John (treasures from his first marriage), Catherine, Mark, Steven, James and Brian, his children all, who learned the importance of family under his and Eileen's guiding hands. Pop will also be missed by those who he considered his own through marriage to his children; Lise-Anne, Michele, Nelly, Gilles and Dunn, his 18 grandchildren, their wives, and 7 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.
Dad lived a rich and productive life proving equal to all challenges that came his way. Having completed his studies at Bishops Field College in St. John's, he served with 408 Photo Squadron of the RCAF before striking out on his own, always moving forward and, eventually, founding Simply Wood Furnishings, in Ottawa, Ontario; an establishment that stands today, just one of the cornerstones of his life of good work.

NEWHOOK, Charles Henry (Harry) (November 18, 1926 - February 18, 2011) - Passed peacefully away into the loving arms of his Saviour, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Harry Newhook, of Dildo, aged 84 years. Harry has finally gone to join his loving wife of 60 years, Hazel (2008). He is predeceased by his parents, Albert Newhook (1948) and Mylie Newhook (1989). Awaiting him in heaven, along with Hazel and his parents, are three sisters and two brothers. PENNEY, R.N., Shirley - August 26th, 1939 - February 28th, 2011. Passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer. Shirley was born in Burin and enjoyed a long nursing career in Stephenville before retiring in St. John's. She is predeceased by her parents Alphonsus and Josephine Penney; brother Gordon and nephew Gary Penney. Leaving to mourn her sisters Eleanor Dobbin and Myra McCormick (Paul); brothers Don (Betty) and George; sister-in-law Susie Penney Cheeseman and Aunt Marion Manning of Burin. RANDELL, James T. - Passed peacefully away at the Pentecostal Senior Citizen's Home, Clarke's Beach on Saturday, February 12, 2011, Mr. James T. Randell, of Coley's Point, aged 77 years. Mr. Randell was an active member of the business community of Bay Roberts as owner of James T. Randell Ltd. and partner in Dawson and Randell Real Estate. He loved life and spent many happy times at his treasured cabin in Ocean Pond. He also loved to travel, one of the highlights being his trip to Russia in 1972 for the first Canada - Russia hockey series. In 2002 Mr. Randell, his father and brother were inducted into the Spaniard's Bay Hockey Hall of Fame. Predeceased by his parents: Clement and Edith Randell, brother Clement (Myra) Randell, son-in-law Tom Jeans and his brother-in-law Reginald Whalen. SLADE, Albert Roy - Albert Roy Slade died peacefully on February 18th, 2011, at Providence Centre in Toronto. Born on November 24, 1940 in Kingwell (Placentia Bay), Roy moved to Toronto in 1965 and worked for the Toronto Harbour Commission for 35 years. He loved his family and his miniature schnauzer Hank, who was his loyal sidekick. Roy also loved spending time at his cottage in Haliburton. He was a devoted family man and a kind and gentle person. Roy is survived by Mary, his wife of 45 years; his daughter Krista (Oxford, UK) and son, Mark (Prachayawan) and granddaughters Kate and Sonya who live in Tokyo. Roy will live forever in the hearts of his wife and children. His sisters Una (Calvin), Alma (Ray), Linda (Joe) and his brother Ed (Jeanette) also mourn Roy in Newfoundland. The family has decided that there will not be a funeral at this time. There will, however, be a celebration of Roy's life in July when his ashes will be buried in Kingwell. The family wishes to thank the exceptional staff, especially Tess, at the Houses of Providence for their compassionate and supportive care.

SMITH, Helen Frances - age 68 of St. John's NL, passed away Feb. 25, 2011 in Northwood Care 9 Centre. Born in St. John's NL, she was the daughter of Angela Walsh and Frank Lavigne. Helen was an avid skater and tennis player. She enjoyed animals and her family. Helen worked for Canada Post and was the first female letter carrier in Newfoundland. Helen won the Mt. Pearl Tennis Club Championship in the late 1980s. SNOW, Rev. Sidney Whitfield - It is with great sadness that the family announces his passing on Feb. 5th, 2011 at the age of 93. He was born in Lewisporte, NL to the late Clement and Maria (Brown) Snow. He lived in Carmanville, NL. until he attended Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB. After graduation from Pine Hill Divinity College in Halifax he was ordained into the United Church of Canada in 1952. His pastoral charges included Little Bay Islands, Deer Lake and Burin in NL, West Bay and Northport in NS, and Douglastown, NB and Trinity United in Shelburne, NS. During the early part of his retirement, he continued as an active supply to charges in the South Shore Presbytery. While in Shelburne, he served as Protestant Padre at CFB Shelburne and chaplain for the Royal Canadian Legion. For his work with the Legion he was awarded the Friendship Medal. During his ministry he was an active member of the presbyteries to which his charges belonged. He was also heavily involved in other community organizations holding various positions such as a member of the District school board, serving as chair, mayor of Douglastown, and a long-time member of the Tri-County Housing Authority in the Shelburne area. He loved being out and about in his community; he enjoyed walking, reading, family visits, and travelling. He valued education and completed his Bachelor of Theology degree in the mid-1960's and his Bachelor of Arts degree from MTA in 1997.
Last May the United Church of Canada recognized him for his 60 years as an ordained minister. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gertrude (Goodyear), daughters, Bonnie (Gordon) Steeves; Brenda (Ron) Butler of Timberlea, and Barbara (Nathanial) Matthews, Shelburne; grandchildren, Paul (Brandy) Steeves, Wade Matthews, Carol (Jean Sabastien) Ferland and Kathryn Butler; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Logan, Rowan and Thomas; brother, Clifford and sister, Marina Osborne, both of St. John's, NL. He was predeceased by brothers, Graham, Ford, and Donald; sisters, Marjorie Gillingham and Dorothy Andrews, and granddaughter, Kirstyn Butler.

SPARKES (nee Hillyer), Joyce - Passed peacefully away on Friday February 25, 2011 after a full and wonderful life, Joyce Martha Sparkes, age 87. Joyce is predeceased by her husband Clayton. SULEY, Gordon - (February 13, 1921- February 26, 2011). Gordon Suley, age 90 years, was called back home with God on February 26, 2011. He is predeceased by his parents John & Sarah (Walker) Suley; brothers; Joseph, Arthur and George Suley; also sisters-in-law, Isabel & Margaret; brother-in-law, George Hollett. Left to mourn his sister-in-law, Mavis Suley, with whom he lived most of his life ; sister, Shirley Hollett & brother, Eric Maye; as well as a special niece and husband, Marilyn (Suley) and Irwin Rees who took over his care for the last six years; plus a large circle of nieces & nephews; grand nieces & grand nephews, and an even larger circle of friends. Gordon was a retired CN employee who worked as a skilled carpenter at the Valley Car Shop, St. John's until his retirement in 1978. Even after his retirement he found much joy with many woodworking projects - carpentry work for friends and family - crafting kitchen cupboards and making glider rockers. He was a honest, hard-worker, gentle and generous man who was sustained by his faith in God, and his deep love of family. He was a humble man who never sought the limelight, but was cherished by all who knew him. Everyone will have their own memories of the times they shared with him. Loving husband of Linda (nee Pauk) and father of Jason (Paula), North Vancouver, BC, and adopted sons Kevin, Toronto, Ont. and Derrick (Karen), Ottawa. Brother of Jane Clark, Durban, South Africa. WEIR (nee Martin), Laura- Passed peacefully away in the presence of her loving family at the Carmelite Palliative Care Unit in Grand Falls-Windsor on Saturday, February 26, 2011, Laura Weir, age 90, of Little Bay Islands and Lewisporte. Predeceased by her parents, Charles and Nora Martin. Leaving to mourn Reginald, her loving husband for nearly 70 years; daughters: Joyce (Vincent) Verge of Harry's Harbour, Joan (Edward) Downton of Halifax, Vera (Kevin) Snow of Lewisporte and Judy (Alton) Locke of Crooked Lake, Badger; sons: Harvey (Gail) of St. John's, Robert (Joyce) of Labrador City and Garland (Kathy) of Brampton, Ontario; fifteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren; in-laws: Wilbert (Marie) Weir, Gordon (Hazel) Weir and Roy (Carol) Weir of Little Bay Islands, Avice (Walter) Mesh of Paradise, Marjorie (Ron) Tucker, Mamie Weir and Uncle Ned Weir of Springdale; and a large number of other relatives and friends, including the members of the United Church Women at Little Bay Islands. Laura was born and raised at Hickman's Harbour, Trinity Bay. Photography was an early hobby and some of her "snaps" have become treasures of both the Martin and Weir families. She met her future husband at Little Bay Islands while serving as the sole teacher in its all-grade Salvation Army School. Throughout her married life she was a devoted wife, a dedicated homemaker and a loving mother. She assisted in the care of her parents in their years of declining health, and she treasured all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Community-minded, Laura was awarded an honorary lifetime membership in the United Church Women. Highly intelligent, with a real sense of humour and an outstanding memory, right to the very end, this kind and gentle woman thoroughly enjoyed the company of family and friends, and will be greatly missed. A funeral has taken place on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home with interment at St. Matthew's United Cemetery, Lewisporte. WHEELER, Charles - May 12, 1940 - February 13, 2011. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of a husband, father, and brother. WILSON (Young), Jean Drury - 89, St. John's, NL. Passed away Monday, February 28, 2011, at St. Clare's Hospital. Predeceased by her loving husband Don and brother John A. Young. She grew up in Dartmouth, N.S. A graduate of both Acadia and Dalhousie. She met her husband Don and moved to St. John's in 1957. She was a life time member of West End Baptist Church and a Dominion Life Member of Women's Missionary Society. Jean and Don were avid worldwide travelers and loved to entertain at home and their summer place. Jean was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a friend to all. Her smile, sense of humour and kind gracious spirit will be missed. Survived by sons: George Wilson (Joyce), Perth, Australia, Jim Wilson (Michele), Windsor, NS; daughters: Nancy Wilson Voegeli (Fred), Bayside, NS, Joan Pike (Greg), Steady Brook, NL and grandchildren: Nancy, Mark, Drew, David, Leanne, Jonathon, Rebecca, Alison, Kelly, Heather, Derek, Tracy; three nephews: John, Bill and Bob; special "sons' Bill Wilson and Bob Noseworthy.
