Although he was born in Hamilton Ontario, he loved Newfoundland with a passion and often said that he wouldn't leave home, only feet first. He loved to collect things, play scrabble and go to garage sales and flea markets. In 1976, he established Seal Cove Grocery in Seal Cove CBS. He enjoyed meeting new neighbours and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. H Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation. Do a random act of kindness in his memory. He would like that. Funeral services have already taken place. She was an avid gardener and could often be seen admiring her flowers from the front step of her house on Topsail Road. She had a true passion for sewing and crafts to the delight of many and truly enjoyed the children's crafts she prepared once the grandchildren came along. While Diane volunteered with many organizations over the years, her greatest accomplishment in her final years were her six grandchildren. She was an amazing "Nanny" who will be sadly missed by them. She left them with incredible memories of baking cookies, pancake nights, Christmas Eve stories, and Easter egg hunts. Never to be forgotten by them are the many times she would tell their parents that it was a "Nanny's"prerogative to spoil her grandchildren. Diane will be missed by a large circle of friends who shared many laughs, joys and tears with her. Her many card groups will remember how she loved the game of bridge and 120s. Her grandchildren often passed many an afternoon playing a game of crib or scat with Nanny.
One thing that was evident in Diane's life was not only her commitment to her long-time friends but their commitment to her. Words cannot express our sincere thanks for the countless number of hospital and home visits, meals, phone calls, and true acts of support for the family throughout Diane's illness. A special thanks to her cousin and friend, Kay Connors and to the many other close friends of Diane and Bob's that have been with them throughout this journey. The family would also like to thank her caregivers, Darlene and Stacey and the many other doctors and nurses who cared for her these past few years.

When I reach that last big shoal
Where the ground
swells break asunder,
Where the wild sands
roll to the surge's toll
Let me be a man and take it
When my dory fails to make it.
Take me back to
that snug green cove
Where the seas roll up
their thunder
There let me rest in
the Earth's cool breast
Where the stars shine
out their wonder
And the seas roll up their thunder.

FISCHER, Prof. Lewis R. (Skip)
Born on October 4, 1946, his dad referred to him as "my little Skipper;" the nickname stuck and he was called Skip by everyone for the rest of his life. His two daughters, Karin (Tim) and Rebecca, one son, Jeremy (Sarah) and two treasured grandsons, Ross and Drew; two brothers, Bruce (Vicki) and Barry. A Professor of History, Skip taught at Memorial University for forty years. His love of teaching and research had an impact on the lives of so many of his undergraduate and graduate students. An international scholar, he taught at many universities all over the world as a visiting professor. His proudest accomplishment was the Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of the "International Journal of Maritime History" which was published for a period of twenty-five years. A brilliant man, who once received this high praise from a Danish colleague at a conference in Belgium: "Before the Internet, Skip Fischer was the internet." In 2006, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Liverpool. He had a passion for music, books and travel and was always willing to share his most impressive music collection and library.
At age 14, Skip wrote the lyrics to Bobby Vinton's hit song "Trouble is my Middle Name." He worked as a disc jockey at various radio stations in New York over a period of ten years. In high school, he was a talented athlete, competing in games against future NBA great Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar).
Special mention of Skip's close European friends especially Peter and Maureen Davies, David and Maureen Williams and Pam Armstrong. Also his many, many friends, colleagues and associates he met along the way that enriched his life.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Joe Lockyer for his care and compassion to Skip. Also, all of the nurses and medical staff of 4 South B at the Health Sciences Complex for all your kindness - you are truly angels of mercy.

Born: November 27th, 1931
Passed on: February 27th, 2018

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, grandfather and friend, Frederick (Butch) Hammond, age 86. Leaving the arms of his loving children, he reunited with his best friend and wife, Margaret Hammond (nee Littlejohn) on February 27, 2018. Also predeceased by his parents, George and Ellen Hammond, brothers Doug, George, Bill, Walter, Charlie and sister Margaret (Green). Dad worked a variety of jobs including Great Eastern Oil, the Bell Island Mines, various mechanic shops, and even a stint in the Naval Reserves. But his favourite times were spent in his shed, repairing chainsaws and lawnmowers and chatting with the Torbay crew who would stop by for a smoke and to have their saws sharpened. Spending years doing and undoing renovations at his cabin in Ocean Pond was one of his favourite summer activities that he loved to share with family and friends. Watching his children and grandchildren grow up at the cabin brought him untold happiness.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Caul's Funeral Home in Torbay. Visitation will take place on Wednesday 7-9, Thursday and Friday 12-4:00 and 7-9 with Mass of Christian Burial to take place from Holy Trinity Church in Torbay on Saturday, March 3rd, 2018 at 10 AM. Thank you to the 3rd floor staff and commissionaires of the Caribou Veteran's Pavilion where dad spent his last months. He truly enjoyed his time there and we were touched by the caring treatment he received every day. Very special thanks to the staff who were with us during his final days; the compassion that was shown to us all has touched us more than you will ever know. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in dad's name to the Caribou Memorial Veteran's Pavillion - Recreational Fund or the Dr. Jack Hand Legacy Foundation.

To add a little bit of history to Wayne's path in life, he was told by his cousin, Bruce, that the house originally purchased by Wayne's father in the early 60's, was now up for sale in Spaniard's Bay. The renovated house, which was a small cabin, became home for Wayne.

When he wasn't working, he could be found on Manitoulin Island on his boat or fishing on one of Sudbury's beautiful lakes with his friends, family and specially his Dad.

Your Mother is always with you, She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street, She's the smell of certain foods you remember, Flowers you pick and perfume that she wore. She's the cool hand on your brow when you're not feeling well, She's your breath in the air on a cold winter's day, She's the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, The colors of a rainbow, She is Christmas morning. She's the place you came from, your first home, And she's the map you follow with every step you take, She's your first love, your first friend, even your first enemy, But nothing on earth can seperate you, Not time, not space ... not even death!

"When I come to the end of the day,
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room.
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not too long,
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love we once shared -
Miss me, but let me go."
