BAKER William John Adams
July 30, 1941 - Feb 23, 2020
The Honourable Judge William John Adams Baker (retired)

It is with great sadness that the family of William Baker (Bill) announce his passing at age 78 on February 23, 2020 at Saint Clare's Mercy Hospital in St. John's after a brief illness. Bill was surrounded by his loving family until the end. Bill was predeceased by his parents Frank and Vera Baker of Botwood. Leaving to mourn with sad hearts but cherished memories are his wife of 55 years and the love of his life, Pamela Faulkner Baker, his devoted daughters, Lisa Baker (Martin LeDrew) and Lori Baker, the joys of his life and beloved grandchildren, Fiona Landells, Elizabeth Landells and Frankie Leigh. Bill also leaves to mourn his brothers, Gerald Baker and Bruce Baker, his sisters, Audrey Rowsell and Lynne Reid, his brothers-in-law, Lindahl Faulkner and Ian Faulkner, sister-in-law, Svea Faulkner, along with their spouses, children and grandchildren. Bill also leaves behind his granddaughters' father, Dr. Ian Landells, his grandson's father, Mike Leigh, and his dear friend and surrogate son, Andrew Winsor. Bill was a quiet, gentle man with a kindness and generosity of spirit that endeared him to so many, especially all those, young and not so young, who will forever remember Bill as "Poppy Baker". Bill leaves behind a wide circle of extended family, close friends and colleagues.
Bill was born in and grew up in Botwood. After graduation from the United Church Academy in 1958, Bill was accepted for the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. Deciding the military life was not for him, Bill returned to Newfoundland and had a career in finance and the municipal civil service during his twenties. At the age of 31, Bill decided to pursue a long held dream of being a lawyer. With a young family in tow, he went back to university and completed an undergraduate and law degree in six years, graduating from Queen's University Faculty of Law in Kingston, Ontario in 1979. He articled with the Department of Justice and was called to the Bar in December 1979. Bill's principal was, the now retired Honourable Madam Justice Mary Noonan of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. With her encouragement, along with that of then Chief Judge Cyril Goodyear and Judge Joe Woodrow of the Provincial Court of Newfoundland, Bill applied for and was appointed a Judge of the Provincial Court in 1980. Bill enjoyed a respected career as a senior criminal trial judge until his retirement in 2006. He served in Corner Brook, Grand Bank, Holyrood and St. John's along with regular circuit courts all over Newfoundland and Labrador. He served as President of the Newfoundland Provincial Court Judges Association during his tenure on the bench. Bill's calm, reasoned and thoughtful approach to the law and the dispensation of justice, along with his sense of humour, earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow judges and the counsel and court staff with whom he worked on a daily basis.
Bill's life revolved around his family. He was a devoted husband and father who rejoiced in the happiness and successes of his wife, children and grandchildren. Their accomplishments were his greatest joy. Our family is so grateful for the wonderful care that Bill received at the Intensive Care Unit at St. Clare's. We wish to thank Dr. Frank Noel and the entire nursing staff for their kind and empathetic care during Bill's brief stay. We also wish to particularly thank Bill's special niece, Karla Faulkner, R.N., Ian Landells and Andrew Winsor for sitting with us through the last few nights and offering all their love and support for a man they all loved as much as we did and always will.
Bill was an avid fisherman since childhood. He was never more content and at peace than when he was out in his canoe, on some pond or other, quietly fishing by himself. Those of us who were lucky enough to have loved and been loved by Bill hope that our beloved Poppy Baker is now casting his fly in heaven, whether it is from his canoe on a favourite pond or from the shores of a special brook.
At Bill's request, cremation has taken place. Visitation is scheduled for 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, February 27th and 28th, at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John's. A celebration of Bill's life will take place at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Saturday, February 29 at 2 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. BROWN Charles (Charl) A.
Nov 20, 1936 - Feb 13, 2020

Passed peacefully away after a short illness. Celebrating a life well-lived are wife Barbara (nee Button); sons: Travor (Andrea), and Robin (Michelle); grandchildren: Josh, Davin, Alex, Maddi, Keely, and Cameron; sister Pearl (Bill Allen); brother-in-law Eric (Judy) Button; sister-in-law Rita (Reg, deceased) Button, as well as a large circle of relatives and friends. Charl was predeceased by his parents, John and Dora, and his brother, Andrew. Born and raised in Joe Batt's Arm, Fogo Island, Charl grew up in "the bottom". He regularly shared stories of the mischievous adventures of his youth. In his teens, he left home to initially teach and a few years later ended up working at the "old" general hospital. It seems that by this time his mother had determined, given his "advancing" age, that he was destined to be a lifelong bachelor. But it was there he would meet nursing student, Barbara Button. At the "mature" age of almost 30, he and Barbara wed. The young couple had a sense of adventure early on. They first worked with Wabash Mines (where son Travor was born). As Charl decided to pursue an accounting education, they then moved to St John's and then on to Toronto (where they welcomed son Robin). With Barbara working shifts as a registered nurse, Charl was very active in raising the young boys. While he mastered bath time, bedtime, diaper changing, and basic cooking skills, he often joked that he never managed to master gravy for Sunday dinner! The couple then returned to St. John's, buying a house on Vancouver Street, where they lived for over 40 years. At this stage of their marriage, Charl could regularly been seen driving the boys to the rink or the pool, or volunteering with their activities. As the boys moved out and he and Barbara retired, the sense of wanderlust returned. Early in their retirement, they drove across Canada, regularly drove to winter in Florida, cruised Europe and visited Hawaii. Retirement also marked the arrival of the six grandchildren. The bond he shared with each was strong. Over the years his time with them involved Friday play-days at the park (followed by the essential McDonald's trip), watching their sports event, and even driving them to university (with a coffee on the way of course). Later in life, Barbara's health declined due to dementia. A dedicated husband, Charl cared for Barbara until she broke her hip and entered long term care. He visited her daily until his illness a few weeks ago. With Barbara in care, Charl's sense of travel adventure retuned. His 80's were marked by annual birthday trips to see his beloved Maple Leafs with family and his solo spring trips to Jamaica. As we celebrate Charl's life, we thank the extended teams of the palliative care unit, 4 North A, haematology, oncology, as well as Dr. L. Adams for their care and compassion. Visitation will take place at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, February 16th. Funeral service will be held on Monday, February 17th, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Mark's Anglican Church, Logy Bay Road. Inurnment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery Columbarium, Kenmount Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any charity of one's choice. To send a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com

He was President of the Lion's Club, an active member of the Rotary Club, and consistently performed small acts of kindness in helping others. FOWLER Francis Paul
"Know the value of the journey"

April 28, 1941- February 18, 2020
Passed away suddenly after courageously enduring one heck of a year in recovery from lung surgery, Francis Paul Fowler, Q.C. Frank attended St. Bonaventure's College in St John's, but it was during his undergrad years at St. Dunstan's University, PEI, that his life-long love of learning was ignited. It was here also that Frank dodged a life of holy orders (as was hoped for by his father) when he fell in love and married Patty Grant from Summerside, PEI. Music brought them together and music filled their marriage. Frank graduated Dalhousie Law School, Halifax, class of 1966. He dedicated his life to his family, friends and profession with great kindness, diligence and loyalty. He was a person with a deep inner life, evident in the empathy and compassion he brought to each day. Laced through it all was an ability to make the funniest connections, and his insight brought laughter to even the toughest of life's moments. It is with great pride that we remember his decades of leadership in service to many organizations including the Law Society, Rotary, the Archdiocese, the Neighbourhood Goodwill Center, Gathering Place, Presentation Associate Relationship, Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons, the Boy Scouts of Canada, and many others. He led by example. In private moments with friends and family, he shared his love and knowledge of many subjects - jazz and classical music, navigation by the stars, the calls and habits of birds, carpentry, and the dry laid stonewalls of his gardens. He enriched our lives and we will feel him beside us in all our many ventures to come.
Frank will be deeply missed by his wife Patty (nee Grant of Summerside, PEI), daughters Elizabeth (Javier Sierra), Anne (Andrew Bartlett) and sons Grant (Janice) and Tom (Clare Dawn) with grandchildren Simon and Jane Michael, Clark Swimm (Lori Dawn), Kate, Rachel and Jonah Bartlett, Sarah and Lily Fowler; Emmett Fowler and great grandchildren Layla and Xander Swimm. Also in mourning is Frank's brother Cy (Donna), sister Barb (Roger Greenwood) of Ottawa, Ann Marie Fowler, Ernie and Peggy Reid, Ken and Heather Grant of Charlottetown, Thomas Grant and Laura DiCosmo of Montreal, a small cairn terrier named Posy, the many nieces and nephews whom he knew and loved, and his lifelong friends. Frank is pre-deceased by his mother (Sadie Fowler (née Byrne) of St. John's) and father (Joseph P. Fowler of Cupids and St. John's), by his brothers Ron, Dave and Noel and his sister Margaret. Frank had plans for his gardens and travel with Patty in the coming year. It is hard to lose him so suddenly, but he "went out with his boots on" as he would have wanted. We extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the many friends who have touched our family already with expressions of love and compassion. Visitations are at Caul's Funeral Home, Lemarchant Road, Thursday Feb. 20 and Friday Feb. 21, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Saturday, February 22 at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully accepted to the Restoration of the Basilica Organ project, memorializing Frank's support and pride in Patty's lifework as organist and liturgist in the Archdiocese of St. John's.

SEXTON Sara Rita
Jan 25th 1923 - Feb. 28th, 2020

We are heartbroken with the passing of our beloved mother Sara Sexton who passed peacefully away at her home on Friday. Our Mom was an inspiration not only to her family but to all who met her. Over her lifetime she lent a hand, provided a shoulder to cry on and gave wise counsel to many; all done with her great faith and wonderful sense of humour. Leaving to celebrate her well lived life but with heavy hearts are her children; Edwina, Gary, Marty (Tish Holland), Marina (Vince McCarthy), Ed (Laura Butland), Herb (Maureen), Mary (Nigel Markham), Sara (Brian Warren). Her Grandchildren; Nik, (Kathy Mentier) Ruby Mae & Jack Thomas; Trevor (Jamie Lee) Alexa & Maddison; Julianna & Mollie; Miles & Ivor (Caroline) Ivy & Isla: Kyra Noseworthy (Adam) Jameson; Laura Lee, Kate (Andrew) & Anna. All her Yetman and Sexton nieces and nephews who loved their Aunt Sara and her stories of their families.
Mom will be missed by her friends in the Sisters of Mercy and Presentation, her MQP Church community, Littledale Alumni, her fellow volunteers in Grenfell Chapter of Kiwanis and the Tommy Sexton Centre. She freely gave her time to many organizations over the years. In her 90's Mom was still volunteering. She received the MUN Alumni Tribute Award in recognition of her outstanding community service and was awarded the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador for her work with the Tommy Sexton Centre and the ACNL.
Mom touched the lives of everyone she met and has too many special friends to mention by name but they all know Sara loved them and cherished their friendship. She became a second mother to many. A few years back Mom was delighted to meet the granddaughters of Laura and Prime Power. The Powers had been her neighbors in St. Georges 70 years ago. They had been exceptionally kind to her, Dad and baby Edwina. Joan, Cecilia and Ann have become like daughters to her.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Edward (Ned) and son Tommy, her parents Anastasia (Molloy) and William Joseph (Bill Joe) Yetman, her nine brothers, Henry, Gus, Matt, Jer, Leo, Syl, Lawrence, Alex, Ned, her sister Mary Krummerich and all her sisters and brothers-in-law. She was the last Yetman of her generation. Our family would like to thank Dr. Kathy Halley for the wonderful care she gave Mom. Her homecare workers, Lorraine, Christine, Debbie, Emily, Anita, Denise and Denika, all of whom took wonderful care of our Mom. A special thank you to Tom Lawlor who faithfully brought Mom communion and prayed with her every week. We will miss our Mom so much but we smile at the thought of her being reunited with her family and friends.
Mom will be waked at Caul's Funeral Home, March 1st, from 2- 4 pm & 7-9pm & March 2nd 2-4 pm & 7-9pm. Funeral Mass at Mary Queen of Peace Parish Church Tuesday March 3rd at 11:00 am. Mom will then return home to St. Mary's for viewing at the Church of the Assumption with internment to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery next to her Ned and Tommy. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Tommy Sexton Centre, 47 Janeway Place, St. John's, NL A1A 1A1.

WALSH Margaret Maude
June 17, 1936 - Feb 18, 2020

Our family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Margaret, dearly beloved wife and mother. On Tuesday morning, February 18th, in the presence of her loving family, Margaret Maude Walsh (nee Wickham), age 83 years, passed peacefully away at the Leonard A. Miller Centre. Margaret was first and foremost a loving mother, grandmother and devoted wife. She would sing the praises of her children to all who would listen - they were her greatest achievement. Although she had a large family, Margaret's table was always open to one more and she welcomed anyone to join at anytime. Her sociable, loving and sweet demeanor and her great sense of humour resulted in a vast number of friends of all ages who considered her a motherly figure, a sister, a friend, and a confidante, not to mention a magnificent card player. Margaret loved family traditions and became famous for her old fashioned Newfoundland fudge at Christmas time. She believed in celebrating every milestone big or small, whether a birthday or a distinguished award. She had a lovely way of making those around her feel unique and special. She was a beautiful person who accepted everyone for who they were.
In the family-owned business, Excel Pharmacy in Churchill Square, Margaret was the smiling face customers first encountered when they walked through the door. Her sweet disposition and charm made a huge impact. It was she who won over customers day after day. Music was a great part of Margaret's life too. She loved Newfoundland and Irish music and could be seen at many local performances. One of her daily rituals was to feed the birds that gathered in her back garden. Margaret loved birds and now has wings of her own, closely watching over all those she loved so dearly.
Predeceased by her parents, Margaret and John Wickham and her brother, John. Leaving behind to both mourn her passing and to celebrate her life are her loving husband of sixty four years, Basil; her children, Beverly Tucker (Kyle), Brenda Bursey (Bob), Margaret Walsh (John), Basil Brian Walsh, Barbara Chalker (Chris), Bernice Batten (Tony), and Robyn Knott (Tom); sixteen grandchildren, Krista, Adele, Victoria, Scott, Christopher, Stevie, Maggie, Ben, Nikki, Elizabeth, Ryan, James, Alexandria, Sam, Jacob, and Angela, and their partners and spouses; five great grandchildren, Edward, Emily, Hayden, Max, and Madilyn; her siblings, Leonard (Peggy), Mary, Carol Ann, Eileen, Frances (David), Lorraine (Gordon), Louise (Spencer), and Kevin; brothers-in-law, Des and Victor Walsh. Also many beloved nieces and nephews and a large circle of special friends. Thanks to the staff at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital and a special thank you to the wonderful staff at the Palliative Care Unit, Leonard A. Miller Centre. Your kindness and care was very much appreciated and made an impact on all of us.

WOODLAND G. Bruce
Passed peacefully away on February 13th, 2020, in the presence of his loving family, G. Bruce Woodland (Veteran WW2, RCAF, and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Reserves (Capt., ret'd)), husband of 68 years to Edith (Skinner). He was the son of Majors Charles and Sarah Woodland, father to Bruce (deceased, 1996) and Renee (deceased, 2012; Geoff), Robert (Heather), Gordon (Bonnie), and Karen; brother to Wilmore (Maria) (both deceased), Gordon (deceased) and his wife Lucy, Rhoda (his adoring sister) and her husband Stan Reid (deceased), Alma (deceased), Cora (deceased) and Renee (deceased); loving grandfather to Matthew (Karen), Meghan (Ian), Andrew (Janine), Greg (Katie), Julie, Mark (Melanie), Emily (Justin), Tim and Matthew; great-grandfather of Eric, Lauren, Luke, Clara, Lucy and Henry along with multitudinous, valued, nephews, nieces and friends (and they know who they are!). He was one of the proud remaining few of the 'great' generation who loved Newfoundland and the Town of Greenspond. He was a great story teller and there was lots of laughter and fun wherever he went. He was compassionate, kind and able to pass on seamlessly the great lessons and wisdom of life. He loved and valued, with no reservation, all within his sphere of life and always said that life is an onion and layer by layer we are peeled until the centre remains. We want to acknowledge that his life has many layers still remaining and although in a different form, he remains with us, forever in our hearts. What he "was" will be passed down to generations to come. We are so grateful to the people important to Dad's care in his final months, especially Mom, Karen and Kristy, who tended to his every need at home (we don't know how you did it!); to Dr. Pat O'Shea, for his 'above and beyond' care and friendship over the years and to Petrina and Vivian, his Community Health nurses. You are all our heroes, and will be remembered always. He wanted to pass on a special 'thank you' to the 'History Group'. They all know how important they were to him. Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Dad's wishes, a celebration of his life will occur in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation in his memory.
