Predeceased by his infant daughter, Genevieve; parents, Corporal Matthew and Agnes (Delaney) Brazil; brothers Gerald and Matt; sisters, Cecilia, Margaret (Melvin Drover and Walter Brazil), Mary (Bill Pennell), and Claire (Harry Gregory) and brother-in-law Bill Ryan. Leaving to mourn are his wife, Josephine of 59 years; son, Angelo; daughters, Michelle, Eileen (Mark Hebert), Ginette (Mark O'Neill), and Pauline (Luis Ayala); grandchildren Krista (Josh Keegan), Jordan, Liam, Ryan, Sarah, Maria, Matthew, Anna and Elise. Also mourning his loss are his sisters Joan Ryan and Eileen (John Woodford), sisters-in-law Marina Brazil and Marie Brazil, and a wonderful crowd of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mike was a dedicated teacher, beginning his career in New York and continuing to teach in many communities throughout the island of Newfoundland, as well as in Wabush, Labrador. In 1986, he retired from the profession at Beaconsfield High School where he taught French. In 1983, he was proud to be presented the Croix de Guerre, on behalf of his late father, Corporal Matthew Brazil, for acts of bravery during World War I. Charity was at the heart of Mike's existence. He showed kindness to everyone he encountered. He organized and supported many fundraising efforts over the years for many groups including the Knights of Columbus, the Right to Life Association, and many school trips for his students at school and his children at home. He always appreciated the support he knew he could count on from the many people he knew to buy tickets, turkey teas, or Billy Boot garbage bags! In his later years, both he and his family increasingly appreciated the contribution of the friends of Bill W. to the enrichment of his life. His love of the outdoors was evident in the berries he picked and the trout he caught, growing potatoes, and collecting seeds to plant trees. He loved a cup of tea, or ten, and played more than a few games of crib! He thrived in social gatherings, often being the life of the party. Many would say they could hear him before they could see him! He sang songs, told stories, played the accordion, and fiddled a few tunes. He delighted in the presence of family, and loved to share in the musical contributions of other family members at large family gatherings. Mike was grounded in a strong and devout faith that was the foundation of all that he did. He encouraged others to live life to the fullest, always believing that things would work out, always trusting in the goodness and love of God. His memory will live on in those who knew and loved him. Josephine and family would like to thank Mike's caregivers over the years at Agnes Pratt Home and at St. Patrick's Mercy Home. Special mention must be made of the staff on the third floor of St. Patrick's who showed much care and compassion as they tended to his end of life care and supported the family through it. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue at 2 p.m. Friday, February 3, with interment to follow in the Bellevue cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, donations in Mike's memory can be made to the St. Patrick's Mercy Home Foundation or the Centre for Life.

CORBETT, Marjorie Frances (née Allan) -- St. John's
Published: February 18, 2023
August 21, 1930 - February 10, 2023
It is with much sadness that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of our mother Marjorie Frances Corbett (née Allan) at home with family. Predeceased by her parents William Allan and Alice Gillies; husband Frank Corbett; brother and sister-in-law Bill and Kay Allan; brother Bob Allan; and son-in-law Phillip Caravan. Left with cherished memories are her children: Allan (Cheryl), Rhonda (Dave), Sheilagh (Bill), Frank (Yvonne), Cathy and Paul; her devoted grandchildren: Erin, Lindsey, Michael, Catherine, Stephen, Katie, Nick, William and Anna; her great- grandchildren Isla and Saxon, whom she adored; brother John (Lou) Allan; special cousin Eugenie Allan; sister-in-law Pauline Corbett; as well as many nieces and nephews. Mom lived a long and happy life surrounded by family, dear friends and wonderful neighbours. In her later years, she especially appreciated the friendship and collegiality of her bridge group and her painting group, Di Dabinett's "Monday's Company", who continued to keep in contact with mom even when she could no longer participate. Mom's determination and independence allowed her to remain in the family home for nearly 70 years, maintaining a beautiful flower garden, which passers-by often stopped to admire. We are blessed knowing that Mom's wish to pass peacefully at home was her last gift to us. Special thanks to Dr. Marie O'Dea, Dr. Danny Squire, and Dr. Alysha Mehta for all of their care, attention, and compassion for our mother. Visitation will take place at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road, on Tuesday, February 21st from 2-4 p.m and 7-9 p.m. Service will be held at Caul's Chapel on Wednesday, February 22nd at 12:30 p.m. For those who are unable to attend the service in person but are wishing to do so virtually, please visit https://vimeo.com/event/2887170 . Flowers graciously accepted, or donations in Marjorie's memory can be made to the MUN Botanical Gardens or the CNIB.

CORBETT, Dominic Raymond Joseph -- Holyrood
Published: February 02, 2023
Dominic Raymond Joseph Corbett, (the last member of the late Walter and Maria Corbett family, passed peacefully away at home in Holyrood on January 31, 2023, surrounded by the love of his life for 70 years, Mary (McDonald) Corbett and his devoted children, Gary (Sandra), Debbie (Brendan), Denise (Mike), Wayne (Carol). Dominic was predeceased by his brothers, Leo, Cornelius, John, Walter; and sisters, Bella, Camilla and Nell. Dad is survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Corbett; special nieces, Dianne Corbett and Cathy Corbett Mullet; close friends; and special nephew, Walter (Shirley) LaCour and many relatives and lifelong friends across Canada. He will be missed by his Star of the Sea family, as well as his many softball, bowling, horseshoe, hockey, and golf friends. Dad's greatest joy was sharing time with his family often in healthy debate over a home cooked meal. His pride for his children was as strong and obvious as his stature, always using every opportunity to share their accomplishments. His 13 grand-children Cheryl (John), Denine (Bill), Colin (Candice), Calista (Coady), Rebecca (Liam), Jessica (Hamish), William (Kelly), James, John (Sara), Maggie (Christian), Mary-Kate (Matt), Josh and Chris (Holli) and his 14 great-grandchildren (Beth, Kierra, Corbett, Ryland, Connor, Dylan, Pete, Ben, Lola, Cameron, Jessie, Charlie, Cohan and Emre) were a source of renewed life for him. He was eager to hear their stories, celebrate their many adventures and looked forward to their visits. He never failed in providing his view of life and offered advice with heart and humor. As an avid storyteller, golfer, traveller, singer, and musician Dad lived life to its fullest. He was a man of great faith who found comfort in prayer and lifting his voice in song while attending Church. Community involvement was a significant component of his life and no matter what Dad was involved in he was prepared to take on a leadership role. He was actively involved as a member of the Holyrood First Board of Trustees and instrumental as a committee member in developing the Centennial Softball Field as well as other tourist and recreation sites. He was a member and at one time Chair of the Holy Cross Parish Council. He enjoyed music and was happy when he practiced and performed with the Cloudberries choir as well as spending time playing his guitar. From an early age Dad demonstrated a strong entrepreneurial drive. In the late 1960's he established a sales agency business which capitalized on consumer market trends. While building his business, he developed loyal relationships with several of our province's business leaders, many of which he proudly referred to as personal friends. With a strong reputation, he was regularly approached by established national & multi-national firms to represent their product lines throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. He continued to grow his business through his later years and finally entered retirement in the late 1990's. Dad lived life. He reached a rich age of 96, however it's never the number , but the quality of each day that creates a worthwhile life, and Dominic Corbett experienced a very worthwhile life. Our family expresses their humble , but sincere appreciation to Dr. Paul Walsh for your professionalism and compassion for dad and our family through this difficult time. Thank you sincerely for all you do to help others. A sincere thank you is also extended to the professional staff of Community Health Nurses at Eastern Health, Holyrood. DOBBIN, Margaret "Anne" -- St. John's
December 2, 1940 - February 23, 2023.
It is said that grief is love with no place to go and, when a journey ends, those of us who watched the wanderer bravely walk the last of her journey are left with our mourning, and our admiration for a courageous traveler who braved the storms of life's challenges and basked joyfully in the love and affection of family and friends. We, the Dobbin family, have lost another of our own. Pre-deceased by her parents, Paddy and Gwen (Blandford) Dobbin; and sisters, Deborah Geraldine and Gwendolyn Mary. Anne has finished her journey and leaves behind her brothers, Patrick (Lucy Power) and Bill (Kathleen Crocker); sister, Elizabeth (Baxter Baker); nephew, Colin Patrick Canary: nieces: Erin Lorien Dobbin and Deborah (Jason Van Meer), Kimberly (Mike Coggins) and Gillian (Mark MacDonald): grandnephew, William MacDonald; and grandnieces, Lylah Van Meer and Elizabeth MacDonald. Anne was a gentle and caring spirit, filled with the zest for life and a thoughtfulness for others. She was a person of dignity and quiet grace, and faithful to the promise of Heaven's reward. She will be missed. We will chisel Anne's name onto the granite slab beside those of other family members who have gone ahead and, as with them, we will carve her name deep into our hearts and joyfully remember her time with us. We will speak of her often in memories laced with melancholy, tears joined with laughter, and always with the forever thankfulness for the treasure of having had her as one of us. Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, February 27, 2023 from St. Teresa's Church at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Anne's memory may be made to The Gathering Place.

FOGWILL PORTER, Helen
Published: February 21, 2023
Helen Fogwill Porter died suddenly but peacefully on February 16, 2023, at the Agnes Pratt Home, with family by her side. She was 92. She leaves a loving family, a legion of friends, a substantial literary legacy, and a gap in all our lives. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Evelyn Fogwill, her husband John and son Johnny Porter, as well as her sister Margaret Fallon, brothers Bob and Bill Fogwiil, and many other loved ones. Those left to grieve her loss and celebrate her life include her children: Kathy Porter (Gary Smith), Anne Porter (Stephen Goudie) and Stephen Porter (Bonnetta Toms); her grandchildren: Shaina Goudie (Noah Hansen), Dylan Goudie (Michelle Ryan), Karla Buchanan Goudie (Matthew Ball), Julia Smith Porter (Justin Watson), Tammi Hewlett (Richard Hewlett), Nikki Dominc (Chris Dominic), Laura Richards (Mark Connolly); and great-grandchildren Evangeline and Atticus Hansen, Tova, Fergus and Ruby Watson, Zachary (Joy Ewere) and Spencer Hewlett, and Arthur and Diana Ball. She also leaves her beloved sister, Brenda ('Bunny Bunsters') Power, sisters-in-law Violet Simpson-Hill and Rose Porter, and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins. Helen had many close, lifelong friends. It would be impossible to name them all, but she deeply valued the affection and companionship each brought to her life. We would like to mention her long and special friendship with Bernice Morgan. Helen, Bernice and the late Geraldine Rubia met as young writers and formed a bond that nourished and enriched Helen's life. Bernice's friendship and support continued until Helen's death. Helen was born on the Southside of St. John's to Robert and Evelyn (Horwood) Fogwill, the firstborn of a family that grew to include siblings Margaret, Bill, Bob and Brenda. In her teens, she met John Porter, a young Salvation Army bandsman and fellow voracious reader, who became her kindred spirit, husband and biggest fan. Helen and John had four children: Kathy, Anne, Johnny and Steve. Helen was the loving and dependable centre of their growing-up years, and she remained a close and supportive presence in their lives. She went on to become an affectionate Nanny and Granny...as well as an unending source of chocolate chip cookies. As a child, Helen started to write, and she didn't stop. She is the author of a memoir, Below the Bridge, which brought back to life the close-knit community of Southside East in St. John's, "the place that disappeared". She also wrote two novels, a book of short stories, a poetry collection ( published when she was 88), numerous short stories, plays, essays, reviews, songs, newspaper columns and magazine features, for many of which she won awards. She taught creative writing for many years and mentored countless aspiring writers. Helen signed up for her first writing course in the early 1960s and a few years later became one of the founding members of the Newfoundland Writers' Guild. Helen believed deeply in equality and social justice. Her compassion for those facing poverty, mental health challenges and discrimination was reflected in her writing, activism and in her daily kindnesses to family, friends and strangers. She was a staunch member of the NDP and stood as a candidate several times. The NDP in this province created the Helen Fogwill Porter Fund in her honour, to provide financial help to female candidates. Helen was also a pioneering feminist and one of the founding members of the St. John's Status of Women Council. Helen received many awards over the course of her long life. They include the Order of Canada, an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Memorial university, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arts Council of NL, numerous Arts and Letters awards, and Life Memberships of the NL Writers Guild, the NL Writers Alliance and The Writers Union of Canada. Helen's life was not without challenges. Like others in her family, she faced depression from time to time. And in her later years, she lost most of her vision. But she found ways to cope. These and other challenges deepened her insight into the troubles that others face every day. During her later years, she lived at Meadow Creek Retirement Centre, and then on Pratt Place at the Agnes Pratt home. She enjoyed the new friends she made among her co-residents and the kind people who work at both homes. Our heartfelt thanks are extended to the caring staff of Meadow Creek and Agnes Pratt for the care they provided. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Iris Kirby House, the Canadian Mental Health Association, the NDP Helen Fogwill Porter Fund, the Salvation Army Wiseman Centre or a charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place. Details regarding a memorial service will be provided in the coming months.

Not only was she devoted to family and friends, but she was also an active member of the ANAF, and donated much of her time and energy to various community services such as Stepping Stone. In the early 80's, before and following the death of her youngest son, Jessie and her husband organized benefit dances that raised almost 20 thousand dollars to support Leukemia Research. Jessie was a talented jewelry maker and crafter, she took delight in sharing her creative side with the people she loved. All of her pieces will continue to hold beautiful memories and special meanings. As per Jessie's wishes, she will be cremated and her ashes placed with her husband and son in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Guelph on Friday, May 12th. A Celebration of Life will be held at Riverside Park before her ashes are released and afterwards please join us at the ANAF to toast the life of this truly amazing woman. Jessie's final thoughts and wishes for all those that knew her, was, "that you recognize the strength and beauty within each of you and no matter what, you be you. And if you love who you are! So will everyone (well most everyone)". Donations can be sent to Hospice Niagara in St. Catharines, Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.

PARMITER, Jim J. -- Harbour Grace
Published: February 22, 2023
Age 73, passed peacefully away on February 19, 2023 at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital in St. John's with his family by his side after a sudden, but short illness with cancer. Predeceased by parents, George and Gwen Parmiter; parents-in-law, Bill and Mary Haire; brother-in-law and best friend, Frank Kennedy; sister-in-law, Betty Pembroke; and great friend and co-worker, Ches ("Ches-says") Stone. Leaving to mourn: his wife of 53 years, Alice; his loving children, Tracy (Rob) Sauve, Dr. Kristi Parmiter (Randy McFadyen), and James Parmiter (Dr. Jennifer Jewer); his beloved grandchildren, Sam and Alex Sauve, Ally and Iain McFadyen, George and Grace Parmiter; his loving sister, Glenys Kennedy; brothers-in-law, Pat Haire (Jean), Greg Haire (Debbie), William Haire (JoAnne), and Steve Haire (Michelle); sisters-in-law, Florence Haire-Sutton and Marion Penney; many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his partners in crime, best friends and neighbours, Derek (Jim Jr) and Marcella Yetman; neighbours, Wayne and Carle Mercer, and Angela Hammond; extended Parmiter family in Point Leamington, Notre Dame Bay; special long-time family friends, Fabian Sutton, Bob Penney, Jim Yetman, Pat and Helen Pembroke, Dave Humber, and Robby Butler. If you knew Jim, you knew he was happiest at home in Harbour Grace and is likely relieved that this trip to St. John's has ended and he can now return to a place that almost certainly looks the way he loved it most with a house full of grandkids, family, and friends overlooking the harbour he knew so well. Jim was born and raised in the family home on Water Street, Harbour Grace and this property is at the centre of his story. One may argue that the time he spent in the warehouse moved the centre slightly westward but it was on this family property nonetheless. He was fortunate to have shared his childhood home with his parents, sister, and his grandparents (Elsie and Henley Parmiter). Shortly after their marriage in 1970, Jim and Alice moved back to the property to lovingly raise their three children Tracy, Kristi, and James. The next generation also experienced this warm and caring man and treasured their time with him in Harbour Grace. Four grandsons (Sam, Alex, Iain and George) and two precious granddaughters (Ally and Grace) brought out the best in Jim as he made them feel both at home and like royalty every time they visited. Jim lived for his kids and grandkids - he was an exceptional listener and hung on their every word, embracing and retelling their personal, academic or athletic achievements as if they were his own. Jim's professional career was dominated by years at NL Hydro in Holyrood (not surprisingly he chose to commute daily rather than leave Harbour Grace) where he developed deep relationships with management and his coworkers. Jim was a charter member (1975) of local 137 International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and served as president for a large part of three decades - he was known as a fair and strong advocate for its members and helped many establish a career in the skilled trades. Ultimately, Jim lived his life his way - he thrived in the familiar routines of Harbour Grace but also enjoyed (sometimes begrudgingly) a scattered trip to St. John's, and also found himself in St. Thomas for Kristi's wedding, in New Haven for James' graduation along with trips to New York, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Toronto and on cruises throughout Mexico and the Caribbean. Jim was loyal, reliable, and kind and will be missed by all that knew him - he was a great husband, dad, pop, and friend. His spirt lives on in all of those that love him and will surely be felt every time we overlook the harbour. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the many friends who were so kind and considerate during this period and to the staff at St. Clare's 4E including the wonderful nurses, and Drs. Thavanathan and Quinlan. A special thank you to Dr. Renelle Butt for her speedy actions in getting him the help he needed. Cremation has taken place. Visitation to be held at Noel's Funeral Home, 21-25 Harvey Street, Harbour Grace on Wednesday, February 22nd from 2:00 - 8:30 p.m. Interment to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank, PO Box 258, Riverhead, Harbour Grace, NL, A0A 3P0.

SHAVE, Gerry -- St. John's
Published: February 18, 2023
With profound sadness, we announce Gerry Shave's passing on February 13, 2023, after losing a long-fought battle with Alzheimer's. Born into a large family in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Gerry regaled us all with stories growing up in a papermill town - playing hockey, summers at their cottage on Remi Lake, Queen Scout adventures. Gerry started managing the Strand Cafe in the Avalon Mall in 1967, moved on to running the Strand Cafe and Lounge, opened the Circle Lounge in Churchill Square, and three other Strands in the 1970s. In 1980, Gerry took the risk and bought the original Strand in the Avalon Mall. Over the years, Gerry loved to renovate (he should have been in construction instead of hospitality!). Although Gerry knew nothing about music, he reinvigorated the Irish Music scene. As a result, the Strand was known for its outstanding roster of music acts. Gerry loved spending time at North River, where he built a cottage. He wanted to ensure that his family experienced cottage life like he did growing up in Northern Ontario. Summers were spent driving the waterski boat and snowmobile adventures. In 1996, after the Strand closed, Gerry and Barbara bought a condo in St. Pete Beach, FL. Gerry's dreams of being warm, playing tennis every day, and not wearing "long" pants became a reality. Gerry is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara; and his children, Claire, Tracey, and Jannine; son-in-laws, Peter Lewis and Andrew Houston; his grandchildren, Liam, Matthew, Sarah, Hayley, and David; and his sisters, Dorothy, Beverly, Lorna, and Patricia, and many nieces and nephews. Gerry is reunited with his parents, George and Beatrice; and his brothers, Donny and Murray, sharing stories and belly laughs. The family will receive visitors at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Sunday, February 19th, from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 -9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Monday, February 20th, at 2 p.m. and will be livestreamed for those unable to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Alzheimer's Foundation, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Newfoundland Health Care Foundation in aid of Cardiac Care. He will also be missed by his seven nieces and nephews, his five great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as his extended network of family and friends. Known and appreciated for his ruggedly individualistic approach to life, Roy's presence will be missed greatly by his family and community. His life's great passion, gardening and horticulture, has left an indelible stroke on the landscape in his native Brooklyn. His memory will live on for generations thanks to the many oaks he loved, as well as a variety of exotic trees now thriving there because of him. His family will always fondly remember the care with which he seemed to magically conjure new life, almost as if from thin air. His free-spirited approach to life led him to have many storied adventures, but his choice to return home in 1994 gave his family the fortunate opportunity to share in and learn from the eclectic skills and knowledge he gathered throughout those adventures. The family would like to express great appreciation for the staff at Pte. Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion for their truly exceptional care and comfort they provided to Roy throughout his illness. A memorial service and interment of ashes will be held on June 3rd at St. Andrew's Anglican Church in Brooklyn, with luncheon to follow at the Lethbridge Fire Hall. With profound sadness we announce the passing of our mother, Karen. Her love, strength, humour and kindness will stay with us always. She said in her last days that she had such a good life. There were hard moments, but they were in the past, and there was so much good to remember. And we are so fortunate to have been so close for this lifetime. She is predeceased by her parents, Robert and Elizabeth (Kelly) James; and her twin baby girls, Madonna Marlaine and Jolene Frances; and childhood best friend and cousin, Sherman Oberson along with other members of the James, Tucker and Kelly families. Leaving to mourn her husband and best friend of 47 years Frank; daughters, Dayna and Sherisse; son in law, Patrick Whittle; her grandchildren, Brooklynn and Grayson who were the light of her life; brothers, Robert (Angela), Dougie, Gregory (Annette). She also leaves a large circle of family and friends, but some in particular she wanted mentioned for all of their love and support. Cousins, Yvonne Parsons, Sandra Casatelli, Cathy Connors, Sadie Connors-Quinton, Esther Elkady; brother-in-law, Paul Tucker; sister-in-law, Patsy Kinsella; and close friend Lorna Ford. A very special thanks to sister-in-law, Marilyn Murphy, thank you for being by her side to support her and help care for dad. She often said she would not be able to get through the last year without you. We are thankful to all of those who visited, called and messaged us over the last month while mom was in hospital. Our family that travelled home to support us and mom, thank you. To our family, friends and staff at PVT that cared for dad over the last month when we couldn't be there, thank you. To those who made meals and treats for us and mom, we will remember such kind gestures. To the doctors who cared for mom, the nurses, pastoral care and social work of HSC, 5NB, thank you for your compassionate and kindness over the last month. She told us her life was just a flash. That family and friends need to stick together and support each other and enjoy each moment life offers. Her fondest memories were of family. The simple moments of togetherness, the love and laughter. She loved roller skating, owls and chatting with family and friends. She couldn't drive anywhere in the city unless she started at home base on Long's Hill where she grew up. She joked that she had her dream job when she was the greeter at Walmart. She could stand up, look pretty and talk to everyone who came in the store. Her real dream job, she said was being a nanny to her beautiful grandchildren. She will be missed for the rest of our lives, but we will keep her memory close and speak of her often. Her love will never leave us.
