KELLY, William (Bill) - Passed away on 21 July, 2010 - How can one begin to describe a man who has touched the lives of so many people? Bill Kelly of Cape Broyle lived his life as a family man of great faith and keeper of Irish culture and tradition who served country (Royal Canadian Air Force - 1960-65), church and community. He was many things to many people: husband, father, poppa, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, friend, entertainer, lector, Eucharistic Minister, Celebrant for Good Friday services, Southern Shore Squirts supporter, member of Bereavement Team, Community Tax Volunteer, with past roles with the Legion of Mary, School Board for Ferryland District, Boy Scouts, steering committee for the Cape Broyle Town Council and the Parish Council. He was also a great Detroit Red Wings Fan. Most of all he was a man who loved his wife, his children, grandchildren, and his siblings - He was so proud to be a member of the Kelly family. Bill was a loving husband to beloved wife Sheila (nee O'Brien) his partner in love, song, and dance for 42 years. He loved Sheila dearly and together they celebrated the good times, weathered the bad times, in sickness and in health; role model and inspiration to daughter Kim of Memorial University (fiancé Mike Maher, St. John's Regional Fire Department); son Scott of Canadian Coast Guard (wife Mary Ann) and beloved grandsons Liam and Cian. He will also be lovingly remembered by sister Maureen Hynes (Elroy), and brothers Basil (Sally), Pat (Joanne) Dave (Bonnie), Dan (Karen) and Brian (Dee Dee). Bill will also be missed by his O'Brien brothers-in-law Charlie (Anna), Davie (Carol), Stevie (Pam), and Walter (Jocelyn); sisters-in-law Florrie Hayden (Dermie), Aggie Walsh (John, deceased), Marion Sturge (Randy), Linda Whelan (Robin, deceased), Rosie Hawkins (Donny), five godchildren (Karen, Carol, Dennie, Danielle and Keegan), special nephew Glen Hynes (Theresa) and nephews and nieces in the Kelly, Hynes, and O'Brien families, cousins, and a large circle of friends. Predeceased by his beloved son Brendan who died in 2000 whom he loved dearly and thought of every day; parents Joseph and Ann (Perry), brother Brendan, Aunt Lillian Molloy; father and mother-in-law Charlie and Madonna O'Brien and brothers-in-law Gus O'Brien and Ronnie Hayden, and sister- in-law Delma O'Brien. A fun loving father and grandfather, it was a rare occasion if you spoke to him and you didn't hear about his grandsons Liam and Cian whom he loved greatly and who brought great joy to his life. Bill has been an outstanding role model and supporter of his grandsons who already show signs of carrying on his traditions of humor, song and dance. Diagnosed with leukemia in 1992, he never let cancer define him. Rather he set out to make each day count by living life to the fullest and most importantly to do good for others. We will remember Bill as a selfless man of humility, and grace. A man of few words, his genuine nature could instantly put one at ease and his smile could light up a room. He was a wonderful, warm, generous and loving man who loved to make people laugh. Bill loved life - he especially loved to sing, dance and recite. Bill will be fondly remembered and missed by all who knew him. He will be resting at Ryan's Funeral Home in Bay Bulls on Saturday, July 24 and Sunday, July 25 from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm each day. Also left to cherish the memory of their Aunt Frances are many nieces and nephews, along with friends of Meadow Creek Manor, Paradise, Bishop Meaden Manor, St. John's and friends at Cochrane Street United Church. Frances was a woman ahead of her time in rural Newfoundland. As a young woman when Pop was on the Labrador Frances would ferry the United Church ministers to and from their ministry work on the pastoral charges by schooner. Frances would have storms and darkness along the coast around Herring Neck, NL. to get the ministers to their work. To many people Frances became known to many as "Captain Frank". After an illness that interrupted her education she went back to school and became a teacher. She taught in rural Newfoundland for a brief period of time, but teaching was not her thing. Business was her second lover after Dad. When Mom and Dad moved to Port aux Basques, Mom opened a dry-goods store (the second love of her life) "Frances R. Vardy" store in Port aux Basques. For 30 years Mom raised her family, looked after the house and ran the business all at the same time. It was difficult to think of Mom having free time. However, Mom also found time to serve as organist and choir director at St. James Anglican Church in Port aux Basques for twenty-five years as well as play for a variety of other denominations providing music for their weddings and funerals. Mom will be sadly missed by many many people who came to know her over the years. Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home, Hamilton Avenue. Visitation to take place on Monday, July 19 from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday, July 20 from 10 a.m. - 12 noon with celebration of her life at Cochrane Street United Church on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Interment to take place at Barachois Cemetery in Port aux Basques, NL on Wednesday, July 21st, 2010 at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
