With great sadness we announce the passing of our father George Fredrick (Fred) Garland Bannister age 95 on Sunday July 13, 2014 at the Veterans Caribou Pavilion. Dad was a WWII Royal Navy Veteran and he worried that wartime sacrifices made might be forgotten. As such, until 2013 Dad visited schools during Veterans' Week to speak about the consequences of war and to ensure we remembered fallen comrades, veterans and serving armed forces members. Our family would like to thank O'Donel High School for the Remembrance Service that highlighted Dad's service during WWII and his ongoing work "Lest We Forget, Lest We Forget".
As a City of Mount Pearl Councillor for 24 years, Fred played a significant role in the planning and development of the City. Without regret and in addition to his regular employment requirements, he gave freely of this time and displayed the integrity and morale courage required to help achieve a small Town's growth into a wonderful City. He continued to work to advance the City in his later years, including the restoration of the Admiralty House Museum opened in 2008. A Royal Canadian Legion Life member of more than 65 years and a founding member of Mount Pearl Branch 36 in 1957, Dad served in all capacities and was Service Officer for many years assisting veterans and widows in acquiring benefit entitlements. His service also included seniors and veterans organizations such as Mount Pearl Seniors Independence Group, Lions Club, the Alzheimer's Society and the Parkdale Manor. Dad was the recipient of numerous awards recognizing his outstanding volunteer community work including the 125th Year Commemorative Medal (1992), Royal Canadian Legion Meritorious Service Medal with Palm Leaf (the highest Legion award) (1992), Mount Pearl Citizen of the Quarter Century, Kinsmen Club Citizen of the Year (1999), Boy Scouts Certificate of Merit, Newfoundland and Labrador Volunteer Medal (2001), Government of Newfoundland & Labrador Seniors of Distinction Award (2001), Prime Minister of Canada Certificate for Service to Seniors (2001), Minister of Veterans Affairs' Commendation (2005), Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2013) and other awards and commendations.
Visitation will take place at Barrett's Funeral Home, Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl from 2 - 4 pm and 7 - 9 pm Wednesday, July 16 and Thursday, July 17. Funeral will take place at Church of the Ascension, Smallwood Drive, Mount Pearl 2 pm Friday, July 18. Interment to follow at the Field of Honor, Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. BOLAND (nee Mason), Doreen Catherine - 1951-2014 - On July 3, 2014, surrounded by her adoring family, a truly beautiful person with a kind, gentle and loving soul passed peacefully from this world. She was only 63. She had many names. Mom, Wife, Aunt, Sister, Dee, Doe, but her favorite of all was Grandma. She made our world a better place with her sense of humor and incredible kindness to others. There to help before you knew you needed it. Her smile lit up the room. Vibrant and full of life with a remarkable laugh. "She is clothed in strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future." Proverbs 31.25, she made everything fun. A case indeed. We will love you forever and ever. A young girl from Avondale, she caught the eye and heart of John Boland. He immediately saw her beauty. She teased him endlessly, anything for a laugh. She truly loved him and he would do anything for his beautiful girl. Married for 42 years, best friends, his heart is broke. A Mom to many but the best Mom to Michelle (Brad) Edmunds and Shawn. We're so glad she's ours. She taught and loved us well, very patient and kind. She loved our friends and all were welcome all the time. Even Cathey bright and early every morning before school. It's amazing how many people can sleep in a living room. When you came to her you always walked away better and happier. She loved a crowd and good thing; we're a big family. Your sister loved to have you close and find peace in that you gave her tremendous comfort in her final days.
Blessed with memories, the Masons, Geraldine (Walter) Walsh, Bernadine (Al Morgan), Christine (Tony Whalen), Hilda (Vince Moriarity), John (Juanita Ryan), and Tony. The Bolands, Laura (Horwood Howell), Idella Philpott, George (Effie Petten), Len (Theresa), and Lloyd (Beverly). And now for her favorites. Niece Toni-Marie and Granddaughters, Rachel and Claire. She loved children and cared for many but these three had a special place in her heart. They were her source of joy and strength. "I will do whatever it takes to spend one more day with them." Love you Dee. Love you Grandma. It is no surprise that such a beautiful person would be surrounded by so much love. Sadly missed by the Boland, Mason, Edmunds, Nolan, McGrath, and Skiffington families, and a large circle of lifelong friends especially Janet Foisy (Kelly) and Bev Kelly, Ray and Marg White, neighbors Lambert and Bobbi Hughes, Physiotherapy Associates work buddy Linda Maddigan and beautiful friend Kelsey Rose. She was welcomed in heaven by loved ones gone ahead: Her parents John and Catherine Mason, in-laws Garfield and Charlotte Boland, bothers Dominic and Morris, sisters Phyllis and Theresa, sister-in-laws Shirley Boland, Mary Winter, and Jessie Stockley, brother-in-laws Cecil Boland, Bill Philpott, and Eric Stockley, and special buddy Gerry Lush.
The family is profoundly grateful to Drs. Ahmad, Greenland, O'Dea and the caring staff of the H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, Carmel Collins, and the Palliative Care Team. You gave her strength and comforted her during her brave battle with cancer then cradled her in care and ensured her peaceful passing. Thank you. To all who knew and loved her, you are invited to honor and celebrate her life by sharing an act of kindness today. She would want it that way. Cremation has taken place and she is resting at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue. Visitation Sunday and Monday 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Service Tuesday July 8th at Wesley United Church, 101 Patrick Street at 11:00am. Inurnment to follow at a later date. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory may be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre or the Janeway. Please visit www.barretts.ca to sign the on line guest book.

CHURCHILL, Gary Lloyd - February 28, 1947 - July 8, 2014 - Dignity and courage delivered our Brother Gary to eternal peace and rest at the Palliative Care Unit of the Miller Centre Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Forty-seven years in a wheelchair confined him, but it didn't define him. Becoming meant overcoming. Broken bodies don't mean broken dreams. Why complain about the wind and the rain when we can't change it. Gary taught us that attitude is our ability, and that because you can't walk doesn't mean you can't embark on life's journey. Every obstacle was a challenge, but it wasn't a defeat. You don't need physical strength and perfection to live in a world where life is so very precious and fragile. Each one of us enriches this earth with a kind a gentle spirit. What a privilege and blessing that you were our brother. (Canadian Association of Rehabilitation Professionals, Canadian Paraplegic Association, formally a member of St. John's Para-Transit Committee, HUB Board of Directors.) Gary appreciated the simple things in life, and they were usually found in a cast-iron frying pan. To those friends and neighbours for their gifts of moose, trout, cod, caplin, and anything and everything from the sea, land, and cake pans, I offer my sincerest thanks for he appreciated and enjoyed each and every feast. For additions to his baseball cap collections thanks again. To those who helped Gary when he needed it most, words fall short in expressing gratitude. To Dr. Patrick O'Shea for all the years of home visits; Dr. Duguid, Dr. Doulton, and the Doctors and staff at Palliative Care; the Doctors and staff at Eleven Elizabeth; Tanya Clark, Sarah Burt, and Bob Hood; Leah and the staff at Rosemore; and to Gary's friends and homecare workers Mark, Glenn, Wayne, Tylor, Justina, Brooks, to each and every one, a heartfelt thanks. Especially now, to Father John Courage, and Rev. Jean Smith our gratitude for your presence and comfort. To Aunt Ethel, thanks for being part of our family. Beloved Brother Gary, until we are reunited again in God's grace your spirit carries us...Lynn, Robin (Randy.) Private family arrangements entrusted to Carnell's Funeral Home.
"The Road is long...with many a winding turn that leads us to where...to where...
But I'm strong...strong enough to carry him, He ain't heavy...He's my brother..."

Predeceased by his parents William and Anne, four brothers Wilf, Ran, Doug, and Gus, one sister Winnie, and his first wife and soul mate Minnie Grace (Oct 4, 2000). Leaving to celebrate his life with loving memories are his only daughter Judy (Gary Butler), and three sons Bill (Rita), Don (Ann), and Stephen (Diane). Also his nine beloved grandchildren - Heather, Bradley, Lauren (Lee Chaulk), Kirsten, Mitchell, Jessica, Victoria Grace, Olivia, and Gillian Grace. Also morning his loss is his second wife Marion and her daughter Phyllis (Don Budgen). He is survived by his twin brother Peter and older brother Harold (Dorothy), sister-in-laws Mae Gaulton, Olive Haynes, several nieces, nephews, and special family friend Ann Field (Howie Dunlop). Dad had a very active life starting with sports (hockey) and volunteer work later in life. After retirement from Clarke Steamships as a supervisor, he served as a counsellor for his ward on the CBS Town Council (1981 to 1985). In 1996, his many years of dedication and service to the St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church Men's Service Club and vestry were officially recognized. Throughout a significant portion of his adult life dad was an active, loyal, and dedicated freemason. He was a freemason for over 55 years and obtained the 32nd degree in Scottish Rite. In 1959, Lodge St. Andrew's became dad's mother lodge. Later in 1982 he became Master of Lodge Conception and in 1999 he became a proud member of Lodge Westmoorland. He was passionate about and held great respect for both jurisdictions within the province (The Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of Newfoundland and Labrador and the District Grand of Newfoundland and Labrador - Grand Lodge of Scottland). Also, dad was very active in Scottish Rite Freemasonry where he became the Thrice Puissant Grandmaster (TPGM) in 2005 and later the Commander-In-Chief (C-I-C) in 2009. On dad's behalf, both a Scottish Rite and a Masonic funeral have been requested. Dad was a gentle man whose winning smile, kind heart, and sense of humour will always be remembered. His greatest love was for his family, his friends, and the Masonic Fraternity. We gain great peace in a sound belief that dad has been reunited with his soul mate "mom" in heaven. Our thanks go to the nurses and doctor of 4 South A and Rosemore Home Care workers for making dad's final days comfortable. Florence began her business entrepreneurship as a confectionary owner from the living room of her home on East No. 1. Then, with her children, she went on to serve mountains of potatoes and fried chicken at Pendergast Take-Out on Town Square. She later began a funeral and ambulance service with her husband Frank in 1968. After Frank's death in 1980, she developed Pendergast Funeral Service with her son Frankie, until his death in 2006, and then oversaw it with her son John, to its current multi-service funeral business. She was a woman of strength, faith and love. Florence, who loved her card games and bingo, was the "Miss Daisy" to her friends, driving them to and from the games in her car. She always had a bigger car than she needed, to ensure room for all the ladies. Florence was very devoted to her faith, and loved to attend the 5pm Saturday evening Mass at St. Michael's Parish. This also allowed her time to prepare her countless Sunday dinners for her extended family. When you entered her home, the radio was always humming her favourite hymns, and her rocking chair was always cozy by the stove. A Special Thank You to the Drs, Nurses and staff at the Bell Island Hospital for their compassion and care that they gave our Mom. She proudly wished to be received at Pendergast Funeral Home, and to be driven with love by her son, John in the Funeral Hearse.
