ALLEN, Rosemary - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Mrs. Rosemary Allen on Tuesday, July 7th, 2015 aged 94. Leaving to mourn with many many happy memories are son Graham (Deirdre); daughter Fiona; grandchildren Marilla (Alan), George, Matthew (Cynthia); and great-grandchildren Caleb and Anna. She will be remembered as a grand lady by her many relations in Alberta, England, Australia and South Africa and by her countless piano students. Rosemary grew up in London, England. During the War years, she taught evacuees in Norfolk before marrying (Arthur Gordon) and raised her family on Mersea Island. She was a natural teacher, able to bring out the best in her many piano students. In 1976, Rosemary and Gordon moved to Newfoundland to be close to their daughter. She loved her life in Newfoundland and it did not take long for her to feel at home. She quickly became known as a piano teacher, and many of her students now have careers in music. She fully intended to teach piano until the end, but reluctantly had to stop in 2006 following a stroke. With characteristic determination, her interest in life did not stop. She used her computer to keep abreast of current events, used email regularly, googled etc. During her last year she loved being able to Skype. Rosemary credited the good quality of her life after her stroke to the care and help she received at the Miller Center in St. John's. While the family thought of her as indestructible, Rosemary knew that eventually an obituary would be written and she specifically requested that a big "thank you" go out to all the people in the Miller Center who helped her in 2006. At her request, a private family service will be held at a later date. Should anyone wish to make a donation in her memory, the Health Care Foundation in St. John's supports the Miller Centre.

McCANN, Peter Cyril - (March 25, 1921 - July 28, 2015) - It is with heavy hearts that the family of Peter McCann announce his passing on July 28, 2015 at the Corner Brook Long Term Care. Surviving a major stroke for more than eight years with incredible fortitude, Peter leaves to honour and cherish his generous heart, Teresa, his wife of 71 years. Peter also leaves to mourn their nine children: Mary (Stephen); Ray (Marian); Arlene (Jim); Judy (Greg); Glenn (Joanne); Percy (Aicha); Peter (Liz); Ann (Theresa); Michael (Polly); 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The second oldest in a large family, Peter leaves to mourn his brothers: Bill (Edna); Edward (Anita); Ben (Philomena); sisters-in-law, Kay McCann (Denis) and Kay McCann (Phil) along with many nieces and nephews including very special friends and nephew, Danny and Mary McCann and Alonzo James. Predeceased by daughter Phyllis, parents Jerry and Agnes McCann, sisters: Nell, Beth, Bride and Anne and brothers: Patrick, Daniel, Jim, Phil, Dennis and John. Peter learned the values of resourcefulness, tenacity and creativity early in life - through experience and necessity. He was a man of many firsts. He and Teresa developed diverse skills and applied them at every opportunity in their family and often in service to others. As a part of a vibrant business, Peter supported the construction of many roads throughout NL, brought the first school buses to his community, led a water project to bring water into many homes and contributed to endless worthy projects including church, school, and community fundraisers over many years. A remarkable spirit has moved on and we are comforted by the caring memories of this special man. We treasure the legacy of strength of character, outstanding courage and consistent patience and kindness that he has left for us to emulate. Forever thankful for his lucidity and ability to be engaged up to his last days, Peter, with his unwavering sense of humor and ready smile, gave thanks daily for the gift of his mind and the use of his left hand. A hardworking businessman throughout all his years, Peter was a humble man with incredible abilities. The latest of these was another acquired skill - the ability to paint with his left hand - remarkable for someone who was right-handed! His tenacity to do this resulted in one of his paintings being chosen for the 2011 Western Health Christmas card. A very special thanks to Denise Gould, former Activity Director in Corner Brook LTC. Special thanks to all those, both staff and volunteers in LTC and all others, who have been a part of Peter's life and who have, in any way provided love, care and support through the challenging days of long term care. Even though we will never again see the twinkle in Peter's eye here on Earth we will notice it, in how he impacts the stars shining brighter in the night sky. Peter will forever live on in our hearts and in our stories. Funeral Services: Visiting with family will be from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Friday, July 31 at Russell's Funeral Home, 57 Prince Rupert Drive in Stephenville. A Mass of requiem will take place at Our Lady of Mercy Heritage Church on Saturday, August 1 at 11 am followed by burial at Port-au-Port East. A reception will follow at the Twilight Seniors Club on Hynes Road. Both Peter and Teresa embraced a strong commitment to education and as a result a Scholarship Fund has been set up in their name. In lieu of flowers, it would be greatly appreciated if donations can be made in Peter's name to The Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador Peter and Teresa McCann Scholarship Trust Fund. Donations can be made by calling 1-877-700-4081, online at "www.munalum.ca/giving/", or by cheques payable to Memorial University and mailed to Memorial University, Alumni Affairs and Development, Peter & Teresa McCann Scholarship Trust Fund, St. John's, NL A1C 5S7. MERCER, Alvin Robert - (April 13 1925 - July 7, 2015) - Passed away suddenly on July 7th, 2015 at Tiffany Village, in his 91st year. Predeceased by wife Marjorie (Mosher) in 2000 and son Robert in 2002. Leaving to mourn his passing and remember his spirit: son Paul, St.John's; daughter and son in law Nancy and Robert Salsman, of St. John's; grandchildren Christopher Mercer and partner Tegan Williams, Edmonton; Samuel Mercer, Edmonton; Lilliann Mercer, St. John's; Margot Salsman, Austin, TX and Marc Salsman, St.John's. Al was born in Edmonton to Snowden Samuel Mercer and Florence (Whiteway). After working with the railway as a "boilermaker" for a few years, Snowden and Florence moved the family back to St. John's to start a grocery business on Mayor Avenue. They eventually settled in Bishops Falls where Al spent his adolescence, remembering with great fondness ice hockey on the Exploits, chopping wood in the back country and enjoying the relative freedom of rural life. After winning the King George V scholarship, in grade 11 he attended Memorial University in St. John's (Pre-Med 1943) and then on to Dalhousie (Dr. of Medicine, class of 49). He met Marjorie Mosher while interning in St. John, N.B. They were married in Lunenburg, N.S., honeymooned in P.E.I. and eventually found themselves in Buffalo, N.Y. and Charleston, S.C. where Al continued his training before returning to St. John's as Newfoundland's first, Urologist. The "plumbing business" was difficult at first as the old guard were protective of their turf and this "angry young man" learned his first lessons in diplomacy. As time passed he developed an interest in medical politics and was instrumental in modernizing the Newfoundland Medical Association serving as its president in 1967. Throughout his career he took many unpopular positions against such things as the medical school and the universality of MCP arguing instead for a "deductible" plan where the patient would be aware of the cost. He remained the last holdout operating outside the plan until finally relenting and eventually going on to work in the audit division of MCP in retirement. He proudly supported the Planned Parenthood Association, becoming it's first president while believing wholeheartedly in the value of education in the prevention of unwanted pregnancy. Al had a natural affinity for music. After taking lessons as a child amidst the "blue bloomers" at Mercy Convent, the piano continued to give him great pleasure throughout his life, where he delighted in playing and singing with classmates, friends and family. In his final years he was fortunate to find a loving supportive community at the Tiffany Village and in particular his dear friend Marcella Linehan with whom he shared a common background and a kindred spirit. His passing leaves a great void in our family life but we will be forever grateful for the fine example that he set and the love and kindness that he lived. By any measure a wonderful life. Cremation has occurred. Visitation at Carnell's funeral home Sunday, July 12th 1-5 pm. Donations gratefully accepted at the Planned Parenthood of Newfoundland, c/o Thrive.

Her interest in where we came from led her into genealogy and preserving our authentic local culture. Her inquiring mind filled her bookshelves with many books such as SciFi, poetry, and pottery. When she loved, she really loved - her many cats, cooking amazing meals for her friends, and the love of her life, Gary. Her departure has left a large void in all those she touched, but we know the memories of her beautiful soul will fill that void and we will be the better for knowing her. She taught us a lot about what a true, authentic person is.
A celebration of Kelly's life will take place at 30 Janals Road, Paradise from 2:00 - 5:00 PM, on Sunday, August 2nd. Donations in her memory may be made to the SPCA or MUN Botanical Garden.

I LIVE ON (Author Unknown)
Don't cry for me in sadness;
Don't weep for me in sorrow,for I will be beside you,as sure as tomorrow comes.
My body has gonebut my spirit lives on,as does my love for you.
Just as in life, I'll watch over you, I always will be true.
My blood lives on in my children, how I've watchedthem grow up with pride.
I'll live on within them,always by their side.
I know my jokes
weren't always funnyand jobs weren't always done.
Just try and alwaysremember the good times,the days when we had fun.
Reach out if you need me,for I will always be near.
Just talk to me, as if I am there,I promise I will hear.
For I'll live on, with in your mind, we'll never be apart,as long as you keep my memory, deep within your heart.
So lift up your hearts,don't be sad,my spirit hasn't gone.
While you're still thereso am I, I really will live on
