He was also a volunteer on many boards and groups over the years including the Matthew Legacy and the Bonavista Recreation Committee, among others. Additionally, because he loved his hometown immeasurably and was always ready to serve, he became deputy mayor from 1989-1992 and served as mayor from 1992-1994. In his younger years, Boyd was also an avid and talented hockey player who was often described to his family as being one of the best to ever come out of Bonavista. When he hung his skates up in the summer months, his sport of choice was softball. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Strathie's Funeral Home in Bonavista. BRUCE, Joanie Elizabeth - (February 20th, 1949 - July 7th, 2016) - Passed away peacefully at the Miller Centre, Palliative Care Unit, St. John's, with family and friends at her side on 7 July 2016. Often referred to as "Our Joanie" by Daddy, our Joanie has left this world a better place at the young age of 67. Joanie was one of the most caring, compassionate, positive, empathetic, generous, grateful, accepting, wise, adventurous, and straight forward human beings you could meet. She was the family caregiver from a very young age. A baygirl (Jersey Side), she left home at 17 to work in St. John's boarding at the Sisters of Service. Like so many, she sent money home to help the family. Joanie worked her way up to Manager of the Cardio-Pulmonary Dept. at the Janeway Children's Hospital, where she worked for 23 years. Subsequently, Joanie completed her degree in Business and thereafter, worked in health promotion at Grenfell Hospital, St. Anthony. A pillar of strength for her family, friends and community, everyone knew they could depend on "our Joanie". Beloved daughter, sister, sister-in-law, godmother, aunt, niece, and friend; if you knew Joanie, you loved Joanie. A veteran, Joanie enjoyed many adventures in the Naval Reserve at HMCS CABOT as a Petty Officer and Officer. Her public service was far reaching including the military, provincial health, various support groups and a community volunteer. Joanie founded a Mental Health Support Group over 30 years ago in St. John's with Dr. Jain. She also founded and facilitated the NL Chapter of the American Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Association, Inc. (ThyCa). Joanie served as a member of several organizations over the years: Legion, Toastmasters, Positive Thinkers Club and others. Joanie loved life and lived it on her terms. Her love of travel took her to Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Caribbean, throughout the United States and across Canada, with many visits to Ottawa. Joanie also loved the simple things in life like trout fishing, berry picking, hanging out clothes, dancing especially the "old fashioned waltz", snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, majorettes as well as fine dining (Raymonds). Joanie carried the torch in support of Mental Health her whole life and truly felt there was not enough support for those who cope with these issues. As a tribute in her memory, we take this opportunity to share with you her innermost feelings about her cancers (thyroid and recent stage IV breast cancer) and depression. Joanie always said that she would take cancer any day, even stage IV breast cancer, over depression. She repeated this again in her final days. Joanie took great comfort and joy in the camaraderie from the ladies, both knitters and Dragon boaters, of the Breast Cancer Support Group. The Bruce Family extends their sincere gratitude to the numerous medical professionals who cared for "our Joanie". Special thanks to Dr. McCarthy and her team, Dr. Fontaine, Dr. Rees, Dr. Slade, Dr. Murray, Dr. Eaton and Dr. Hurley, as well as the Health Sciences Centre's nurses and the angels at the Palliative Care Unit, Miller Centre. Palliative Care is an amazing environment, where our beloved Joanie found so much comfort during her final days. Predeceased by her loving parents, Michael and Betty Bruce of Jersey Side. Leaving to mourn, Aunt Alice (Bruce) Kelly, her siblings Michael, Cathy (Bill) Hayter, Richie (Rita), Alice (Randy) McWhirter, Willie (Brenda), Pat (Genny), Martha (Paul) White, Anna Marie (Chuck) Morrow; nephews and nieces - Michael (Hayter) (godson), Gregory and David, Shyama, Nicole and Stephen, Claudette, Pierre and Pat, Paul and Jason, Michael (Morrow), Betty (goddaughter), Eddie and Susie (Meaney), Greg, Michael, Janet and Neal (Connors); grand-nieces and nephews - Reine, Jaden, Brandyn and Braeden; Yvonne (Power) Taylor (goddaughter); best friend, Shirley and an extensive network of true friends. Rest in Peace our loving and amazing sister. We shall love you forever and you will live on in our hearts, memories and stories. Joanie lived her life by the Serenity Prayer. "Lest We Forget". COLLINS (Bindon), Kathleen "Kay" - Passed peacefully away at the age of 101, surrounded by her family, on July 8th, 2016, at her residence at Tiffany Village. Kay was predeceased by her parents William Bindon and Alice (O'Neill) Bindon, her baby son John in 1946 and her husband Bernard in 1981. Left with fond and loving memories her four sons William "Bill" (Christine), Bernard "Tanny" (Elizabeth "Liz"), Brian (Janet), and Andrew (Shirley); her grandchildren Jonathan (Ashley Andrews) & Michael (Robin Hawkins), Raymond (Julie) & Susan, Allan & Paul & David, Sarah (Tom Kirk) & Stephen (Kelly) & Jane (Graham Keay); her step-grandchildren Joel & Jared & Mitchell Harvie; and great-grandchildren Grace & Benjamin, James, Sophie & Henry. She also leaves to mourn sisters Patricia Eleanor MacLeod in Pensacola, Florida and Regina DiPietro (Joe) of Lynnfield, Massachusetts, Bindon cousins Louise Doyle and Winnie Carew, sister-in-law Daphne Collins, many loved nieces and nephews across Canada and USA, her special friend Lil Moakler and many new friends from Tiffany Village. Kay was one of a family of 13 Bindon children that grew up on Cook Street. She was a toddler when the Beaumont-Hamel battle took place, she had clear memories of Charles Lindberg flying his plane over St. John's en route to Paris and watched the Colonial Building riot from a safe distance in 1932. She met her future husband Bernard while skating on the wetlands where King George V Park is now located. They both joined the Newfoundland Hiking Club, in keeping with the active outdoor life that she led throughout a century in her beloved Newfoundland. At her home on First Avenue she raised four boys to adulthood, and helped her husband build PF Collins International Trade Solutions into the success that it remains to this day, now led by her grandson Raymond. Her husband Bernard died in 1981, leaving her in mourning for the love of her life. Yet resilience carried her on, and she resumed an active lifestyle. She was a fun and spirited participant in many groups, including the 3F Club at the Mews Centre, the Happy Wanderers, the MUN Extension Choir, the Square Dance Club and many others. She became a fierce but friendly card player. Her ten grandchildren gave her special joy, and she taught each of them (with varying degrees of success) to sing and dance. Her five great-grandchildren brought her more joy and laughter. She was well-known to other dog walkers in the First Avenue, Roche Street & Rennies River area. She would put in numerous kilometres each day until age 95, when a car ran over her leg. But because of her strength, resilience and independence, after a few months of convalescence she was walking again. It was after this accident she moved to Tiffany Village, where she made many new friends and became a favourite of the staff. If there was music on the go, she'd be up dancing and singing. The staff were so kind and loving to her, and particularly caring in her last week following an apparent stroke. She led a loving life of dignity, fun and warmth. Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends may visit the family at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Sunday, July 10th from 7-9 p.m. and Monday, July 11th, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 12th at 9:30 a.m. from St. Pius X, Smithville Crescent. KEARLEY, Hubert - (May 16th, 1953 - July 2nd, 2016) - Casting off the final mooring, Hubert Kearley, of English Harbour East, Fortune Bay, NL has now set sail on his final voyage. Let the log book show the date of departure as July 2, 2016. Although he left this time with a crew of only one, he carried in his sea bag the love, memories, heartaches and prayers for a peaceful trip from a huge crowd of well-wishers. Seeing him safely and peacefully off after an eighteen-month battle with lung cancer was his current wife of four years, Pauline (nee Matchett). Thankful for the years of unconditional love, laughter and support are daughters Lori Ann Kearley Johnston (George), Glenda Goguen (Peter) and precious grandchildren Brandon, Caitlin, Courtney, Cody and Bradley as well as their mother/grandmother Susan Kearley, all living in Nova Scotia. In addition, he will be dearly missed by stepdaughters Katherine McGrath, Kandice Dwyer (Lawrence) and step-grandchildren Riley, Devin, Rebecca and Saoirse all living in NL. Heavy hearts were felt once again by the loss of another sibling by sisters Jane Elms (Albert), Melinda Thornhill (Thomas), Leverna Lambert (Richard), brother Robert (Phyllis). Hubert will also be greatly missed by sister-in-law Marie Kearley, brother-in-law Jim Snook, as well as numerous other brothers and sisters in law from both marriages, especially his card-partners Frances and Tom Howe. His life was especially blessed by the continued presence, love and support of Uncle Wilson Kearley and Aunt Mary Augot, as well as a multitude of uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. The boat has been spotted and welcoming Hubert home with open arms to his final port of call is his father William, mother Hannah (Anne), sister Violet, brother Charles, infant brother Francis, as well as numerous family members and old fishing buddies! Raising a drink of white rum to his memory and wishing him a soft landing are many of Hubert's buddies who helped him prepare for this final voyage. They kept him company with phone calls, visits, cold beer, countless cups of coffee and the telling/sharing of years of fishing exploits, resulting in hours of laughter. Throughout his illness, he learned that laughter truly is the best medicine. While too many to mention individually, of notable mention is the first skipper he ever sailed with, Skipper Tom Kearley, buddies Guy Hackett, Jim Hackett, Wilson Kearley, Michael Hackett, Dereck Kearley, Calvin Byrd, Phil Kearley, Frankie Reyno, Steve Careen, Banfield Skinner, and the last skipper he sailed with, Skipper George Hudson, crewmembers Bob Bennett, Eugene Bromley, Phillip (Big Flip) Manuel, Brian Newman and the management staff of Arctic Fishery Alliance. Special heartfelt thanks to Bonnie, Vicki, Charmaine and Dr. Alchalabi of Burin Peninsula chemo lab for their wonderful care during treatments and to Dr. C. Ahmad, Dr. S. McDonald, Dr. B. Eaton, Dr. Hurley and the palliative care team at the Leonard A. Miller Centre. You all helped to calm the waters during many stormy days.
Hubert celebrated his 16th birthday on the Grand Banks and spent the next 46 years of his life making a living from the sea. Therefore, in accordance with his wishes, direct cremation has taken place. Some of his ashes will be inurned with his mother and father and the remaining ashes will be scattered at sea in a private ceremony at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Peninsula Funeral Home. A service offering thanks for his life, led by Rev. Jim Beaton will be held at St. Peter's Church in English Harbour East on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at 2 pm with inurnment to follow. Family members will be pleased to welcome you at the church from 11 am to 2 pm to share hugs, tears and stories. Please feel free to stop by the Kearley homestead after the church service to toast Hubert with a drink of white rum or cold Bud Light or a taste of some of his favorite food. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the family or to a charity of choice. "Standing in the storm, he adjusted his sails." McDOUGALL, Mary Patricia "Pat" - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mary Patricia McDougall (née O'Driscoll) announce her passing at Shannex Parkland in Clayton Park, Halifax, Nova Scotia on July 18, 2016 at the age of 84. In her final years and without a word of complaint she served notice to several foes, including breast cancer and dementia, that not a single day would she surrender. May she forever rest in peace.
Pat, as most people called her, Drick in her beloved and native Newfoundland, was born in St. John's on January 15th 1932. She grew up in St. John's with a tight circle of friends - The Spooks (Drick, Louise Doyle (Goog), Pat Kennedy (Pats), Agatha King (Kingy) and Marie Brennan (Brenny) who were life long friends. Stricken with Tuberculosis shortly after graduation from High School, Pat spent close to 18 months overcoming the disease. While working as a stenographer with the Department of Fisheries (in what was still the Dominion of Newfoundland) she met her future husband Wallace (Wally or Bud) Dexter McDougall. They were married on September 23rd 1959 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Halifax, en route from St. John's to Ottawa to start their married life together. Pat and Wally lived in Ottawa for the next 17 years until they returned to the Maritimes in 1976 with their 5 children in tow. She and Wally spent the rest of her life living in Clayton Park and their summers without fail in Main-a-Dieu, Cape Breton.
The focus of her life was her family, raising the children and enjoying the pleasure of the company of their six grandchildren. Happy that she is now resting in peace and left with fond and loving memories are her husband Wally, children Ann Marie (Steven Simmons) of Dartmouth; Dan (Marie MacPhee) of Truro; Robert of Montreal; Rosalie (Cherrie Abraham) of Portland, OR, USA; and John of West Pennant. She was predeceased by her brother Dr. Robert Francis O'Driscoll of Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. She will be missed by her six grandchildren: Cleary, Phoebe, Lena, Ella, Jonah & Sacha. Lastly, she was fortunate to have many good friends including Ruth Ward, dear family and friends in Main-a-Dieu and Newfoundland, and neighbours on Briarwood Crescent. Constantly, and without ever seeking recognition, Pat's selfless devotion to her family and to her community were the hallmarks of her life. Family always came first and we all benefited from her caring and seemingly endless energy making our home in Clayton Part the anchor that kept us close. Pat also served her community in a very meaningful way. As a devout member of the parishes of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Benedict's Catholic Church and as a faithful member of the Catholic Women's League she gave to her fellow parishioners and to others less fortunate. Her commitment to the church community seen through her work as Secretary at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, President of the Catholic Women's League, contributions to Church Socials, providing meals for Hope Cottage, the Social Justice Committee and other worthy causes. Her selfless nature and dedication to the wellbeing of others was inspiring. Pat truly made the world a better place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice, the Breast Cancer Foundation, the Alzheimer's Society, or a gesture to someone less fortunate.

McGRATH (nee Fleming), Agnes Theresa-(January 6th, 1929) -July 6th, 2016) - On July 6, 2016 Agnes McGrath passed peacefully from this world. She was the last surviving child of Edward and Agnes Fleming. Predeceased by her husband in 2010, there is no doubt that Mom was met by the love of her life, her dance partner for 58 years, our Dad, "Paddy" McGrath. She loved him. She loved Torbay. She loved her family and friends. She was a master in the kitchen and loved to cook and bake. Passionate about dancing, walking, knitting, especially praying, she still found time to keep her home spotless and always welcomed a crowd for a meal or a game of cards. Her heart was happiest when her house and table were full. Her special love for dogs lead to a good home for many treasured pets. Love and kisses for each and every one. Mom was happy to have her family close and was proud that most lived in Torbay. She will be missed tremendously by her daughters: Madonna (Andrew) Edmunds, Carolyn (Paul) Cantwell, and sons: Patrick (Shelley), Kevin (Barb). Memories of Nan will always be treasured by grandchildren: Brad (Michelle) Edmunds, Amy (Brian) Murray, Stephen Cantwell (Laurie), Amanda (Brandon) Decker, Danielle (Colin), Chad Hollett (Janet) and Kristyn Hollett (Matt), Samantha Ellis (Tristan), Sonya Ellis (Stefan). Famous for her hugs, candies, and toonies, Nanny Graw is forever loved by great-grandchildren: Rachel, Claire, Ben, and Sam. She was so excited to hear that her 5th great-grandchild was on his way. We know she will be watching proudly as baby boy Decker is brought into this world. She will also be missed by a large circle of nieces and nephews especially Bernadette Field, Gloria Cole, and Judy Dawe. She had a special place in her heart for Gen Tapper, a life-long friend. The family is filled with gratitude for the care and friendship Mom received at North Pond Manor and would like to especially thank Violet, Carrie, Jean, Ann, Paula and Margaret. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, Torbay.
