AYLWARD, Fintan Joseph Hon. Justice
Published: July 03, 2021

Passed peacefully away surrounded by his family in St. John's in the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 28, 2021, The Honourable Mr. Justice Fintan Joseph Aylward. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife Ann, his children Geoffrey (Elaine), Gillian (Mark), Bruce (Elisabetta), Bradley (Gemma), Christopher (Suzanne) and Alison (Christen), as well as his twelve cherished grandchildren: Stephen (Aria), Erin, and Meaghan Aylward, Lauren, Kristian, and Bethany Stafford-Smith, Niccolo Aylward, Claire and Paul Andrew Aylward, Neria and Fintan Aylward, and Sophia Audet, as well as an extended family of nephews and nieces, and many friends, esteemed colleagues, and business associates. Fintan is predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Annie (nee Connors) Aylward, his brothers Nelson, Gordon (Maude), Gerard (Lillian), his twin brother Fabian (Frances), and his sisters, Sister Mary Madeline RSM, Margaret Etchegary (Theophilous), Patricia Aylward, and Madelyn Cotter (Bill.) Born in St. Lawrence, Fintan attended St. Bonaventure's School, St. Francis Xavier University, and Dalhousie University. He had a long and distinguished law practise in St. John's and subsequently served as Judge in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the early 1970s, he represented Placentia East in The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. Among his many contributions to the community, Fintan founded the Legal Aid Commission, led the Royal Commission into the fluorspar tragedy, was member of the Ocean Ranger Royal Commission, State Deputy of the Knights of Columbus, and Chair of the board of the Marine Institute. Fintan was a man of deep faith, and a devoted member of and lector for his parish of St. Pius X. He was also an avid swimmer. His huge dives into any pool left a vast wake, an apt metaphor for the enduring impact he leaves behind him now. He taught us to love without fear or reservation, and to embrace the responsibilities of conducting a well-rounded life. One of his favourite poems was Babcock's Be Strong!, with its incantation "Faint not! Fight on! Tomorrow comes the song." Visitation will take place on Sunday, July 4, from 2-5pm and 7-9 pm at Caul's Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road, St. John's. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Pius X Parish on Tuesday, July 6th, 2021 at 9:30 am, with cremation to follow. For those who wish to attend virtually, the service will be livestreamed. A loving and proud father to Bradley and Georgina and their spouses Jessica and Hisham, along with their mother, Beverly, George leaves many cherished memories. A "best friend" - too precious to ever be forgotten. With blessings of two families George leaves behind children Terry and Sharon along with two grandchildren Liam and Maxwell. He dedicated many years to YBC and our youth to help shape some very skilled bowlers. He formed many friendships along the way, names too numerous to list but rest assured your names were mentioned in the many stories he shared about his sporting days. George's career as Deputy Registrar of Motor Vehicle Registration came with an opportunity for George to show his passion to do what he could to help people, whether that was Ministers, staff, or the general public. He took pride in the position and it was evident in the many lives he touched and friends he made throughout his 34 years of service. George was touched by many home support workers over the last few years. An extra special thank you to Agora, Vanessa, Judy and Allison. Your care and compassion, along with your ability to amuse George's competitiveness in Crazy 8's and checkers was "top shelf" and brought much joy to his daily routine. GIBSON, Caroline F.
Published: July 19, 2021
February 6, 1964 - July 11, 2021

We will forever hold our wonderful Caroline Gibson in our hearts. Caroline passed away at home with her partner Walt and her sister Mary Jane by her side in Port Townsend, Washington on July 11, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Born February 6, 1964, in London, Ontario, Caroline navigated the world with endless sparkle and humor. Her ability to appreciate every fish leaping, flower blooming, and twinkly light glimmering on the Christmas tree (which she said was the "best tree ever," every year), was magical. Caroline had little tolerance for complaining, and even when very ill, she radiated the good cheer that all who met her will forever remember. She loved sharks, baby gorillas, float planes, ice skating, cheeseburgers, prosecco, and celebrating all occasions. Caroline was hilarious, silly, and made everything fun. She told fantastic stories, was indescribably generous, and loved connecting people. She was interested in everything, and she made everything interesting. Caroline followed in her father John's footsteps as a scientist and conservationist. Her fondest memories were of her summers with her father, roaming the woods and rivers at the Matamek Research Station in Quebec. She forged many lifelong friendships when she lived in Maine, where she served as assistant to the director of the Darling Marine Center. During her career in Washington's Northwest Straits, Caroline served as a member of the Jefferson Marine Resources Committee, as the Marine Program Manager at the Northwest Straits Commission, and as Executive Director of the Northwest Straits Foundation. She formed the Salish Sea International Kelp Alliance, increasing awareness, understanding, and support for kelp as critical habitat. She worked with commercial fishermen on ways to reduce lost gear and mitigate impacts to marine wildlife. The Salish Sea is a better place because of all that Caroline gave during her lifetime. The sadness we feel with the loss of our fabulous Caroline will be helped by doing as she did - celebrating, always, and being outside as much as possible. We will find her in every river, forest, and salty ocean breeze. Caroline is survived by her beloved partner Walt Trisdale, her baby sister Mary Jane Gibson, her mother Judy Gibson, and an immense network of friends and colleagues around the world. She leaves a legacy of love, community, and kindness. A celebration of her life will be held at a date to be determined. Donations may be made in Caroline's memory through the Northwest Straits Foundation to the Caroline Gibson Scholarship in Marine Studies, which supports young marine conservationists just out of college with a twinkle in their eye and a drive to make a difference in marine conservation. https://nwstraitsfoundation.salsalabs.org/TheCarolineGibsonScholarshipfund

LANE, Annie Madeline (Nee Mercer)
Published: July 03, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Annie Madeline Lane (Nee Mercer) on July 1, 2021 at the age of 93. She will be reunited with her loving husband, Horace Lane, who was taken far too young from her and their young family. She always spoke of their love story as never ending and now they can resume their love together. Predeceased by her parents, William Mercer and Elsie (Nee Hodder), of Victoria Cove, Gander Bay and brothers, Gilbert and Royburn. Leaving to mourn her sister Marie Woody, her children Jerry (Linda), Mona Kirby (Terry), Horace (Karen), Kay Thomey (Ron) and Jacqueline Lane Greenwood (Robert), 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. Also leaving to mourn many relatives, friends and neighbours who all loved Nan. Madeline - or "Nan" as she was known to most - started out as a shy, beautiful young woman who moved to Millertown in the heart of the Newfoundland "lumber woods" to work for the Osmond family, and it was then her love story with Horace began. After their marriage they moved into one of the original Millertown houses on the shores of Red Indian Lake and the first four children arrived in rapid succession, and then, ten years later, baby Jackie. When her husband died suddenly, Madeline's grief was unimaginable, but supported by a network of strong Lane women and the love of her family, she persevered and eventually, thrived. As each of her children launched successfully into life, Nan became the ultimate grandmother and mother-in-law. Family was all, and she instilled this through her love and support and her loyalty. If you were family, or accepted as family, she always had your back. And babies were the most precious, important gift in the universe - and all her grandchildren know it. She travelled far beyond her wildest dreams - across Canada and the U.S., throughout England, Wales and Scotland, and to Paris. But she always came back to Millertown, and the house she shared with Horace, and the garden she loved and the sunsets over the lake. The family wish to thank all the wonderful staff at Golden Years, at the Central NL Regional Health Centre, and at North Haven Manor. Your professionalism and compassion, often with limited resources, made Nan's final years, months and days as comfortable and comforting as possible. Visitation, subject to Covid requirements, will be at Hoskins Funeral Home, Grand Fall - Windsor, from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, July 3. A service will be held in Millertown for immediate family on July 4. Online condolences may be submitted to www.hoskinsfuneralhomes.ca/tribute     Donations may be made to Millertown Church in honour of Madeline Lane by e-transfer, care of gullifordmarlene@hotmail.com or mail to Dave Gulliford, Box 55, Millertown, AOH 1VO.

Our hearts are broken at the sudden passing of the gentlest and kindest husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Predeceased by his parents Clifton and Emma Martin and brother, Derek. Leaving to mourn his wife of 61 years Sadie (Follett); daughters Michelle (Derek Winsor), Wendy (Harry Clements), grandchildren Kurt (Suzanne), Becky (John Slauenwhite), and Erin, and great-grandchildren Jonathan, Andrew, and Cole. He will also be lovingly remembered by his siblings, Bill (Lorna), Valerie (Winston Skeffington), Linda (Roy Symonds), Jocelyn (Jack Wood), Wayne (Sharon), Randy (Donna), and sisters-in-law, Barbara Martin, Cynthia (Don Whalen), Sylvia Follett (Garry Ivany), cousin Helen Carberry, many nieces and nephews, and a large circle of friends. Graham had a 30-year career at Her Majesty's Penitentiary and retired as Assistant Superintendent in 1991. He played senior hockey with the Feildians and recreational old timers' hockey and he was always ready to grab his guitar for a sing-a-long with family and friends. He was a jack of all trades, and enjoyed spending his time in Western Bay working around the house and in his garden. Graham's greatest joy in life was his family. His immense pride for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was written all over his face in any and all interactions with them. He could be foolish and fun but also quiet and reflective. He loved and supported us, and we will always be grateful for the many lessons he taught us. We wish we could have kept him with us longer and we will miss him everyday. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road Wednesday July 7th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A service celebrating his life will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel will be held on Thursday, July 8 at 2:00 pm. No flowers by request. McDONALD, Leo Joseph

May 20, 1941-July 2, 2021

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother - Leo Joseph McDonald (Mundy Pond). Following a short illness, Leo quietly slipped away in the loving arms of his wife on July 2, 2021 at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital. Predeceased by his parents Luke and Annie McDonald; brothers: Dave (Mary), Kevin (Marg), Brian (Mary) and Brendan (Mimi); and sisters: Mary (Cyril Reynolds), Shirley, Joan and Hazel (Paddy Power). Forever remembered and forever loved by his devoted wife Christina (Chafe) of 49 years; his cherished children: Trevor (Julia Lee), Trent and Tara (Martin Laboissonniere); grandchildren: Finleigh Claire (Byrne) and Max, Sophie and Jacob (Laboissonniere); his siblings Joyce (Marvin Solkov, deceased) and Audrey (Bob Knodell); special in-laws Rita (Wayne Mullins) and Mark (Flo, deceased); many nieces and nephews and countless life-long friends. Leo spent his final hours surrounded by his loving family and was sung to sleep for his mid-afternoon nap by his special grandson, Max. As Max sang the words to 'Once I was Seven Years Old', Leo held out his hand and gave him a Poppy-squeeze. Leo was a devoted husband, father and grandfather whose favourite time was spent at home at the end of the table enjoying a 'small' glass of rum and pepsi watching the goings on at the house. His daughter, Tara always said her father was the only man who could cook a pot of soup sitting at the kitchen table, never leaving his chair. To those who knew Leo, knew he was a man who loved a good story and a good laugh. Leo spent the majority of his work life as a Lab Technologist at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital. Throughout his life, Leo was also a member of The Knights of Columbus and spent countless hours with colleagues and friends reminiscing about the good ole days. If you have ever had the honour of being in Leo' presence, you are blessed - a true treasure, an adorable man and a straight shooter. Leo spent the last few weeks of his life on 7West at St. Clare's - we would like to extend our gratitude to the medical and nursing team that cared for him so tenderly. To all who loved him, we thank you. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors at Caul's Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road on Thursday, July 8th, 2021 from 12 p.m - 4 p.m and 6 p.m - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Teresa's Parish on Friday, July 9th, 2021 at 1 p.m. For those that cannot attend in person but wish to attend virtually, please visit https://tom0349.wixsite.com/streamingservices/cauls In lieu of flowers, all are encouraged to engage in a random act of kindness in Leo's memory.

Barbara McInnes
loved to dance but found that cancer was an unappealing and awkward partner. So early in the morning on July 1st, with a brilliant smile on her face, she took one last solo twirl and left cancer behind as she died peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Beloved wife of Glenn for 57 years. Loving mother of Leah McInnes-Eustace (Jeff) and Emily McInnes (Jonathan Gallivan). Mother figure and special aunt to Shawn Jackson (Hilary Davies and Toby). Devoted and cherished Granny to Devon Eustace, Simon Eustace, and Gideon Gallivan. She is survived by her siblings and their partners, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends and the thousands of people whose lives she touched, whether she knew it or not. Barb had a deep sense of what was true. She loved her 27 years as President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Ottawa, and she equally loved her seven years on the Shorefast Foundation Board. Her bond with Zita Cobb was fast and her stewardship of the Governance Committee fulfilling. Barb built deep connections with her fellow board members and had a special feeling about every person both at the Inn and in the broader Fogo Island and Newfoundland community. Over the years, her visits included not just Fogo but time with special friends Beverly and Peter Rockwood in St. John's and Marlene Creates in Portugal Cove. "Barb had the remarkable gift of being able to see the world as it could be, just as clearly as she saw the world as it is. Her ability to hold this duality in focus gave her a magical power. It drew people to her, including me, and it shaped how the world unfolded. Barb showed us how to live in a 'yes, and' way. She was a strong tonic against divisiveness and negativity. These days, more than ever, we must carry the spirit of Barb forward with fierce determination." Zita Cobb. Barbara worked tirelessly to enhance the culture of philanthropy in her hometown of Ottawa, in Canada, and internationally. During her years with the Community Foundation of Ottawa, she developed new avenues and partnerships that enabled generous citizens to invest in their community. She helped to steer the Community Foundations of Canada and the International Transatlantic Community Foundation Network and fostered numerous local foundations across the country and internationally. Barbara provided leadership to such organizations as Carleton University, the United Way of Ottawa, Shorefast Foundation, the Telus Community Board, Compassionate Ottawa, and more. For her exemplary leadership in the philanthropic community, she was invested into the Order of Canada in 2010, received an Honourary Doctorate from Carleton University, and received the Queen's Jubilee Medal. Perhaps even more significant than her accolades, incredible career and service achievements is how Barb inspired, supported and mentored people throughout her illustrious career. Her family, the many places she explored, the fast friendships she and Glenn made, and her accomplishments which helped her community, filled her life with delight. Instead of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in memory of Barbara to the newly established Barbara McInnes Executive Mentoring Project Fund. Details and a donation link can be found at https://community.afpglobal.org/nlchapter/career/barbara-mcinnes   A small private family service will be held. A celebration of Barbara's life will take place at a later date once COVID restrictions are lifted. Early years were spent with the kids in the woods, on rivers, and snowmobiling at their cabin in Gambo. Genevieve and Rex also loved their sailboat, and friends at the Royal Newfoundland Yacht club. PEARCE, David Wayne
Published: July 17, 2021
July 31st, 1951 - July 12th, 2021

"Like an old friend kinder than expected" * David Wayne Pearce passed peacefully away on the morning of July 12th, 2021 in the company of his daughter Rubyanne Whelan and his partner Susan Moores Babb. Wayne and Susan are a testament that it is never too late to fall in love. Leaving to mourn: his daughter Rubyanne Whelan and her mother Anne (Carbonear), his partner Susan Moores Babb (St. John's) and fellow wordsmith Woodley Whelan (Toronto). Wayne will be missed by the Whelan, Thomey, and Moores families and his dear neighbours at 804 Veteran's Rd., Pleasantville, St. John's. Wayne was predeceased by his father, Chesley of Catalina, his mother, Edwina (Dove) and his brother Lloyd of Harbour Grace, his numerous aunts and uncles, most recently his dear Auntie Fran of Toronto, as well as his beloved dog Ralph, his loyal companion and buddy on the barrens. Wayne's early childhood was spent in Argentia where his father was postmaster. Fog and the smell of diesel always conjured up memories for him of a very carefree and somewhat solitary childhood. After his father's death, his mother moved with her two young sons to her hometown of Harbour Grace where Wayne spent his youth and young adulthood. He could often be found on the tennis court with his friend David Andrews. This fuelling a life long friendship and interest in the sport. Wayne was an introvert by nature. Keenly intelligent he saw the world through an empirical lens. Always trusting mathematics, Wayne approached the simplest tasks with precision and attention to detail. He was a healthy skeptic who questioned convention and not surprisingly appreciated satire. Albeit a complicated soul he was deeply sensitive and valued kindness and sincerity. He was fascinated and intrigued by language and nothing pleased him more than a well turned phrase. Possessing a clever wit, he loved a good laugh. While he had not travelled widely, Wayne had an uncanny sense of the world's geography, which always made him someone you would want on your jeopardy team. Walking gave him great enjoyment and he delighted in nature's grandeur. The sighting of a northern flicker or the beauty of a magnificent larch tree in spring would make his day. David Wayne Pearce will be laid to rest with his mother and brother in St. Paul's Cemetery, Harbour Grace, in lieu of visitation and funeral service.

PIERPOINT, Frank Gerard

Frank Pierpoint
, born March 3, 1937 in St. John's NL, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2021 at the Fredericton Hospice House. The only child of the late Harold and Lillian (nee Spooner) Pierpoint, Frank leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Shirley (nee Goodyear), and daughters Karen and Lynn (Marc-Alain). He will be missed by many dear friends and of course by his beloved little dog, Mini. Frank retired from the RCMP at the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1984 after 28 years of service. He enjoyed every moment of his career with the Identification Services Division and leaves behind many of his close RCMP friends. Following retirement, Frank and Shirley moved back home to St. John's NL. In 1989, Frank received a phone call that would later become a defining moment in his life. Frank, along with 5 or 6 other retired RCMP members were asked to join UNTAG, a United Nations peacekeeping force being deployed to Namibia to monitor the peace process and elections there. The elections took place in November 1989 peacefully, freely and fairly resulting in Namibia's official independence and the successful conclusion of UNTAG. It's an event he recalled fondly over the years - telling us that the group dubbed themselves "The Geriatric Club". Frank enjoyed life and had many passions. He was a member of both the Shriners and Masonic Lodges, volunteering often and especially at Christmas time selling trees. He was past president (1990-1992) of one of St. John's most respected clubs, the Crow's Nest Officer's Club. First built as a warehouse after the Great Fire of 1892, the building's top floor of "The Old Butler Building" on Water St. became a "hideaway" for seagoing naval officers in 1942. Up the infamous 59 steps, Frank's plaque still hangs there today. Following Frank & Shirley's final move to Fredericton in 1996, he became a proud member of the Garrison Club. Frank will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends. A special thank you to Dr. Brian Reid and Dr. Stéphane Paulin for their care during the final days of Frank's life. And especially to the staff of Hospice House in Fredericton. After a 4 month stay in the hospital, the Hospice staff were a welcoming, caring, patient group of professionals whom we won't soon forget. We have no words to express our gratitude for how they cared for him and how they accompanied him with love in his journey while in his second home. Thank You! There will be no visitation or service per Frank's wishes. For those who wish, donations in Frank's memory can be made to the Fredericton Hospice House or The Shriners Hospital for Children. Rosco is gone. It is with profound sadness that we announce Barry's passing. He died peacefully and quietly with family at his side, at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's, after a short but grueling battle with cancer. Barry was pre-deceased by his older brother John (Diane), and is survived by older brothers Ian (Ravonne), and Michael (Toby), and younger brothers Ron, Alan and Dean, plus nephews John, Mark (Heather), Tim (Sara), Greg (Shari), Andrew, and Bryan, and nieces Andrea (David), Jennifer, Caryn (Anil), Eleanor, and Aileen, and many great nephews and nieces. Barry was born in Montreal and shortly after attending McGill University immigrated to Newfoundland. He quickly fell in love with his new home and enjoyed exploring the many beautiful places he found around the island. He loved playing and creating music and for many years was a part of the music scene in St. John's and pursued many interests with a passion. Prominent among them was his work with the Friends and Lobbyists of the Waterford River (FLOW) Project where he served as editor of their newsletter. He was a gentle, caring and compassionate man who loved and supported rescue animals and the Heavenly Creatures animal shelter from which he had adopted four dogs which were his joy. He will be sadly missed by his many friends including several that go back to his earliest days in the province. His family would like to thank his good and long-time friends Craig Westcott and Don Sharpe for their continued help and support through this difficult time. We would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the doctors, nurses and support staff of A South 4 at the Health Sciences Centre for their extraordinarily compassionate and effective care of Barry. We could not have asked for better treatment as his disease progressed. You made him comfortable, eased his pain, and allowed him to die with dignity. You were truly his angels. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial event will be arranged in the late summer when hopefully we will be free of covid restrictions. Condolences may be left at www.cauls.ca, and donations in the memory of Barry may be made to the Heavenly Creatures Inc. animal shelter heavenlycreatures.ca

WELLS, Lillian "Lilly" Joyce
Published: August 07, 2021

Heaven has gained the most beautiful angel - On July 28th, 2021 Lillian "Lilly" Joyce Wells age 61, passed peacefully into her eternal home with her family at her bedside. She is predeceased by her Father Wilfred Wilson Wells. Leaving to mourn with loving memories her mother Vera Wells (nee Eddy) (Ellis Bridger); Brothers Wilson (Heather), Rob (Katherine); Sister Karen Trickett (David). Her true pride and joy, nieces Rebecca, Danielle, Heidi, Sophia and great niece Rayah; Nephews James, Andrew, Kohyn, Brandon, Carter and great nephew Jude; she was also blessed with a large and loving circle of other relatives and friends. Lillian was born in Corner Brook and spent a memorable childhood growing up in her hometown of Wild Cove, White Bay. She lived with her dear Aunt Joyce Regular in Baie Verte during her high school years, and there began her lifelong passion of caring for children working as a live-in nanny with the Loveman family who loved her like one of their own. After leaving Baie Verte in the 90's, she moved around working in different homes before settling in St. John's to be closer to her sister and family. She continued her career as a child care giver while enjoying many activities around town; Birthday hotel getaways, shows at the Arts and Culture Centre, and people gazing at Middle Cove Beach were just a few of the delights in her life. She took pleasure in baking treats and cooking meals to share with her neighbors, including the mailmen, who didn't want their routes to change so as not to miss out on her baked goodies. Her smiles and funny wit, she shared with everyone who knew and met her. Special thanks to close and dearest friends Gertie Ricketts, Judy Loveman, Joan Benoit, and Jody Trevors who spent many hours chatting on the phone and visiting with her this past year. At Lilly's request, donations can be made to the Janeway Children's Hospital Foundation (https://janewayfoundation.nf.ca/) The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of St. Clare's Mercy Hospital (4 West). An interment will be held at a later date.
