Passed peacefully away, surrounded by her loving family, at the Health Sciences Centre on July 3rd, 1999, Margaret Abbott, aged 76 years. Predeceased by her husband Bob, 1985; her loving son Robert, 1996 and his wife Carolann, 1998. Leaving to mourn with cherished memories, her two daughters; Lorraine (Jim Foley), Lillian (Jim Marnell); three sons; Jimmy (Jo Anne), Tony (Roseanne) and Bruce; ten loving grandchildren whom she adored; Sheri-Lyn, Margaret Ann, Tonya, Janet, Kayla, Chris, Jimmy, Chad, Robert and Ryan; great-grandson Tyler; very special brother Bob Bishop; her friend and sister-in-law Kitty March; several nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends. Also leaving to mourn her friends at Mount Pleasant Manor. Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue until 12 noon on Tuesday. Passed peacefully away at Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, July 31st, 1999, after a lengthy illness, Edric Ash of Portland, aged 75 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife Florence (nee Pye); one daughter Linda Holloway; son-in-law Bond; and one granddaughter Ashley, of Winterbrook; sisters; Ruth McCracken (Hoyt, N.B.), Genevieve Miller (Kitchener), St. John's, Donalda Russell (Maxwell), Portland; brothers; Calvin (Maxine), Portland, Maurice (Barbara), Porters Lake, N.S.. Aylward, Alice Mary
Passed peacefully away on Saturday, July 31st, 1999 at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, Alice Mary Aylward, age 86 years. Predeceased by her husband Edward in 1973 and her son Edward Jr. in 1974. Leaving to mourn five daughters; Kathleen Woodford, Goose Cove; Theresa Bromley (Maurice), Goose Cove; Josephine Greening (Dorman), St. John's, Gertrude Sexton (Ambrose), St. John's, Marie Williams (Bill), Bay Bulls; two sons; Francis (Bernadette), Goose Cove; John (Pauline), St. John's; 41 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. Passed peacefully away at the Carbonear General Hospital on Friday, July 16, 1999, Doris Barrett of Bishop's Cove, age 84 years. Predeceased by her husband Nathaniel. BRAGG, Lillian Maude (nee Penny)
Passed away at the Health Sciences Center on Thursday, July 29, 1999, Lillian Bragg, formerly of Port Union, aged 77 years. Predeceased by her husband, George W., in 1989; parents: Samson and Esther Ann Penny of English Harbour, Trinity Bay; sisters: Anne Rex and Jane Comisky; and brother Samuel Penny. A mother of unconditional love and a kind and generous soul to many, she is survived by her only son, John Aaron of Calgary, Alberta. She will be sadly missed by her other relatives, many friends and extended family at Chancellor Park. Passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 1999 at Placentia. Age 63 years. Predeceased by son Rockie; parents Lillian and Bill Brewer; and brother Martin. Predeceased by her husband Eric Budgell, parents Hubert and Elizabeth Hynes of Norris Arm, sister Jessie Budgell and brother Sterling Hynes. Butler, Douglas J.
Passed away on Monday, July 12, 1999 in Toronto, Ontario, after a valliant battle with a chronic illness. Leaving to mourn are his wife Anne and three sons; Geoffrey, Craig and Frederick. Douglas also leaves his mother Betty of St. John's; sisters; Diane (Dick Wiseman) and Elaine (Humberto Enriquez), all of Austin, Texas, Pamela (Leo Sachs) of Oakville, Ontario; and brothers; Roderick of Vancouver and Michael of St. John's. A Service in celebration of Doug's life will be held on Tuesday, July 20 at Humbercrest United Church, Toronto at 10:30 am.. Memorial donations made to the MS Society would be appreciated.**

Butler, Douglas Joseph Born February 24, 1943 in St. John's, NF and was taken July 12, 1999 in Toronto, Ontario after a valiant struggle. Doug was the first born child of Betty (Vincent) and Wilfred Eugene Butler (deceased); brother to Diane Wiseman, Pamela Sachs, Elaine Enriguez, Roderick Butler and Michael Butler; husband to Anne (Cahill); father to Geoffrey, Craig and Roderick. Doug was a graduate of Prince of Wales College, Memorial University, Dalhousie University  School and Osgood Hall. A special service will be held Saturday, October 2, 1999 at 2:30 pm at Cochrane Street United Church to celebrate Doug's life. All of Doug's friends and friends of the family are invited to attend. If you wish, contributions may be made to Cochrane Street United Church Restoration Fund or the the Multiple Scierosis Society, in Doug's memory.**

Passed away on Friday, July 23, 1999, after a courageous battle with cancer, at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, Lorraine Margaret Butler, aged 53 years of Toronto, formerly of Mount Pearl. Predeceased by her father Gordon Butler in 1983. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, her mother Margaret Butler of Mount Pearl; brother Don; sisters: Joan (John) Walther, Carol Anne, Janet and Maxine; niece Rhian Walther and nephew John Walther and a large circle of relatives and friends both in Toronto and Newfoundland. French, Winston Oswald
On Friday, July 16th, 1999, Winston Oswald French passed away peacefully in his 87th year, at his residence in Ottawa. Beloved husband of the late Elizabeth (Bessie), loving father of Elizabeth Millar (Rob), Cynthia Lawson (Frank), Barbara DeJong (Dick) and John (Karen), and proud grandfather of Jamie, Sarah, Laura (deceased), Meghan, Jeffrey, Rachel, Matthew and Louise. Fondly remembered by his brother Bert and sister-in-law Clare. Winston was born in The Dock, Bareneed, Newfoundland in 1912. A graduate of Dalhousie University, he joined the navy in December, 1941. During WW11 he served aboard Canadian Corvettes engaged in convoy escort and patrol duty in the North Atlantic. A former provincial and federal public servant, Winston worked as a Chartered Accountant with National Revenue (Customs and Excise) until his retirement in 1977. After retirement, Winse and Bessie enjoyed many summers at The Dock where he spent his youth. Respecting Winse's wishes, the family has donated his body to science. A memorial service will be held on August 22 at Pinecrest Memorial Chapel, Ottawa. Haynes, Alexander (83) of New Glasgow, NS, died peacefully on Monday, July 19th, 1999 at the Queen's North Health Complex, Minto, NB.. Born October 3rd, 1915 in Catalina, Newfoundland, he was the youngest son of the late Alexander (Sandy) and Mary Hannah (Raymond) Haynes. He was the first employee hired by S.W. Miffin Ltd. of Catalina. He served the role of Maintenance Supervisor with Mr. Miffin's successful salt fish processing business. Over the years his role with the firm covered many areas such as; electrician, plumber, refrigeration mechanic, carpenter, radio, T.V. and appliance repair; and diesel mechanic on the company's many schooners. He retired from the company in 1987 at the age of 71, after working there for many years, except for 1942-45 when he worked with the American Forces at Fort Pepperal, St. John's, NFLD. He also served as Service Officer, Treasurer, Vice-President and President of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 16 in Catalina, NFLD. As well, he attained the rank of Sub Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve. He was a kind, compassionate and generous man, highly respected in his community. He was considered a man who could accomplish anything. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Cora Nellie (Matthews); sons; Dr. Gordon R. Haynes, wife Rebecca, Minto, NB and Randy M. Haynes, wife Cassie, New Glasgow, NS; and grandchildren; Cynthia, Pamela, Jason, Angela, Katie, Charles, Alexander, William and Mary. Passed peacefully away on July 12th, 1999, Alice Ethel Heplard of Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was prececeased by her husband Raymond H. Helpard in August of 1997. Lanier, Dr. Louis L.
While visiting family and friends, Dr. Louis L. Lanier died suddenly at the age of 73, on July 13, 1999, in his birthplace of Lethbridge, Alberta. Lou was educated at the White School (Wilson Siding, AB), Lethbridge Collegiate Institute and Pickering College (Newmarket, ON). With his B.Sc from McGill University, he taught at Pickering College and then returned home to Wilson Siding to farm, raise a family and be an active member of the communiity. After attaining his M.A. from the University of Alberta and Phd, from Michigan State, Lou worked as a professor of Recreation Administration at the U of A until his retirement in 1991. Lou enjoyed the great outdoors, particularly in the company of family and friends. In his "retirement", he championed a number of environmental causes, working for Habitat for Humanity and Canada Crossroads International. Along with his wife Leslie Bella, Lou built his dream home in St. John's, Newfoundland, and spent the last years of his life dedicating himself to an endless stream of projects. Lou will be missed by his first wife, Elizabeth Nicolson Lanier; daughter Sherry; sons; Thomas, James and Robert; widow Leslie Bella; step-daughter Mary Bella; and the families of his brothers, Charlie and Ike, who continue the tradition of their father's family farm. The family greatly appreciate the skill and support of the staff at Lethbridge Regional Hospital. Lou has shared the gift of life through organ donation. Seward, Ronald Derrick 48, of Lower Sackville, N.S., died July 2nd, 1999 at the QE 11 Health Sciences Centre, Infirmary Site. Born in New Perlican, Nfld., was was the son of the late Peter and Phyllis (Piercey) Seward. Although he was very active in his community, he was a strong and committed family man. He was retired from the Canadian Forces after 28 years of service. He was a member of the Dartmouth Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star #51, The  Antiquity Preceptory No. 5, Royal Arch Masons of Nova Scotia and P.E.I., the Shriners Philae Temple, Hfx. He was also a Keystone Kop with the Dartmouth Shriners Club and was in the Order of Eastern Star Queen Esther Chapter 61. He was involved with the N.S. Minor Hockey Assoc, for many years, most recently as the N.S.M.H.C, Suspension Coordinator. He was on the Organizational Committee for the 1997 National Karate Championships and on the fund raising committe for both the N.S. Figure Skating Assoc, and Queen Esther Chapter 61 and was an active volunteer for many organizations. Always the champion of the underdog, he will be remembered for his sense of humour, fair play attitude and his love of a good argument. Passed peacefully away at the Salvation Army Glenbrook Lodge on Thursday, July 22, 1999, Daisy Pearl Stares Webber (nee Cox), aged 91 years.  Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, daughters: Joan MacMurde (Tom), Torrence, California and Elizabeth Gosse (Granville), St. John's; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Funeral Service to be held at Barrett's Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday, July 26, 1999. White, Patrick
Passed peacefully away at the Grace General Hospital on Monday, July 19th, 1999, Patrick White in his 91st year, formerly of O'Donnell's/Biscay Bay. Predeceased by his wife Mary White. Left with fond and loving memories are his step-daughters; Myra (Michael) Hickey, Vera (Derm) Butland, Kathleen Comerford, Mildred (Gordon) Tobin, Anne Marie (Eugene) Murphy, Carol Ann (Jacob) Collins; his step-sons; Felix Hanlon, Leo (Sylvia) Hanlon, Gerry (Linda) Hanlon, Eddie (June) Hanlon; his sister Kitty Pennell; and three sisters-in-law; Genevieve White, Marie White and Dolly White; numerous nieces, nephews and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Resting at St. Anne's Chapel, O'Donnell's. Funeral will take place on Wednesday following 11 am Mass. Interment will be in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, O'Donnell's. Leaving to mourn husband George; two daughters, Georgina (Steve Tucker) in Trenton, Ontario and Patsy (Keith Nicolaus) in Oak Harbour, Washington; one son, Fred; six brothers, seven sisters, along with a very special mother, Lucy Meade; also four granddaughters and a great-grandson. Passed peacefully away at St. Patrick's Mercy Home on Friday, July 16, 1999, Grace Woodfine, age 89 years. Predeceased by her husband George and her granddaughter.
