BODDIE (nee Foster), Mary Annette - (May 9th, 1928 - June 25th, 2016) - Mary Annette Boddie (nee Foster), 88, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 25, 2016 in Halifax, NS with her loving husband by her side and in the presence of her loving children. Mary was born on May 9, 1928 in Broughshane, County Antrim, Northern Ireland to Montgomery Balfour Foster and Mary Anna Foster (McAdams). Family was always first for Mother and her commitment, drive and love for her family was simply astonishing. She was witty and smart, strong minded, strong-willed, stylish and independent - all traits she passed on to her children. She gave them the confidence to dream, to believe in themselves and fostered their ability to achieve their goals. She loved them, cared for them, made certain they were fed and protected them always. She only drove small sporty manual transmission cars and refused to drive anything with an automatic transmission.
An avid and very knowledgeable sportswoman, she was an enthusiastic equestrian rider, an accomplished hockey player (field hockey) and had a love of motor racing, rugby and numerous other sports. She regularly attended the Ulster Grand Prix and Ulster TT, Point to Points and never missed watching The Grand National Steeplechase, of which she had an incredible knack of always picking a horse that would place. She enthusiastically watched grand slam tennis, especially Wimbledon and loved following the Olympics and cheering on Great Britain and Ireland. She adopted the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey club and enjoyed watching ice hockey late into the evenings.
Mary had a wonderful appreciation and talent for classical music that she passed on to her children. She was a regular fixture for numerous years at the Kiwanis Music Festival of St. John's. She tested successfully for her Trinity College music exams in piano and voice but unsurprisingly found her calling caring for others in the nursing field. She received her Registered Nurse designation from the Royal College of Nurses in 1948, trained at and had a successful career at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. She quickly ascended to the top of the hierarchy and one of her great achievements was her nursing involvement in the internationally acclaimed cardiology unit with Professor James Francis Pantridge, CBE, MC, MD.
She met her husband, a medical student - Dr. Charles Boddie in 1950. They were together ever since. Together, in 1954, they left Northern Ireland for St. John's, NL. They raised six children and through a shared love of nature and animals and over a number of decades created a piece of Northern Ireland for themselves and their family in Green's Harbour, NL. Green's Harbour provided many shared family memories with Mummy at the helm. Her love of animals was evident in the number of horses, ponies and numerous other animals she owned and cared for. Her reputation as a protector of horses is still widely known and appreciated. She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Matt Foster; sister-in-law, Maud Foster; and daughter Linda Boddie. Survived by her cherished husband of 60 years Dr. Charles Boddie, St. John's/Halifax; and her devoted, loyal and loving children: daughter Patricia Boddie (Barry King), St. John's, NL; son Charlie Boddie, aka Brudder, St. John's, NL; daughter Carol Moore (David), Fredericton, NB; daughter Susan Boddie, Halifax, NS; son John Boddie (Ginny), Halifax, NS. Loving grandchildren Lauren King, Hannah Moore, Martha Moore, Sam Moore, Emma Boddie, Molly Boddie; Leslie Boddie; great grandchildren Sophia and Cole.
A special and heartfelt thank you to Dr. Diane D'Arcy whose compassion, care and respect for Mother will never be forgotten. A reception to honour Mary's life will be held on July 10, 2016 from 2:00pm to 7:00pm at the Admiral's Green Clubhouse, Pippy Park Golf Course, St. John's, NL. As per Mother's wishes, her family will be accompanying her back to her beloved Northern Ireland. Cremation has occurred. PATEY, Reuben Montaque - (May 18th, 1941 - June 04th, 2016) - Age 75 years. It is with great sadness that we, the family of Reuben Patey, announce his passing. Reub was will liked wherever he went, he had a keen sense of humor and charm that would light up a room. He really enjoyed making people laugh. During Reub's working life, he retired from his career as being the longest tenured Bodyman in St. John's. Reub left Main Brook in 1957 at the age of sixteen to enter trade school. He chose Bodywork because he loved the old cars and didn't feel like being a carpenter, because he was sick of cutting down trees, and didn't think he'd enjoy being a bricklayer. His first job, he spent in Grand Falls for two years at Bennett's Garage. He then came back to St. John's and started at George. G.R. Parsons Ford Dealership. He remained there until it changed to Regatta Ford, then made the move to Kenmount Road when Avalon Ford opened. He remained there until 2003 when he finally took his tools for good. Reub spent a couple years taxi driving for Cy's Taxi. He enjoyed meeting people and had a funny story to tell after every shift. My father always did everything he could to give his children whatever they needed, I can't remember him ever saying no when we wanted something. He also always had inspiring words of encouragement, and could always make me feel confident and proud. I remember him telling me when I was a young shy boy, keep my chin up and my shoulders back when I walked, "He'd said be proud, you're a Patey!". Dad was all smiles when he was around the boy's, he loved having a laugh and always told me that I had great friends. He cherished his grandchildren dearly, he loved them, and enjoyed every moment he spent with them. Dad's memories will comfort me forever, I consider myself lucky and fortunate to have had the greatest dad. Reub is predeceased by his parents Norman and Jessie Patey. POYNTER, F. Adele - Florence Adele Poynter of St. John's, Newfoundland (born in St. Lawrence, NL) died on June 30, 2016 after a courageous battle with ALS. She was 60. She is the daughter of the late Florence M. Poynter (Etchegary) and Donald A. Poynter Sr. Adele is survived by her husband John and children Alexander, Patrick and Kate; brothers Thomas (Stephanie) and Robert (Kass), and predeceased by her brother Donald, sister Barbara and beloved dog Zulu. She also leaves her Uncle Gus and Aunt Kay Etchegary; cousins: Gemma and Albert Giovannini, Kay, Glenn and Grant Etchegary, and Susan and Robert Lohf; nephews and nieces: Alison, Jenna, Jolene, James, Megan, Ryan, Henry, Annabel, Zachary, Donald, Jack, Paul and Jim; and her many friends and acquaintances around the world. Professionally, Adele had many achievements, principally in Natural Resources and Economics. She held B.Sc. (Hon) in Geology from Memorial University and a Master's in Resource Management from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. She started out working for Gulf Oil in Calgary and returned to Newfoundland to work for the province's Petroleum Directorate, before being appointed a Commissioner with the Economic Recovery Commission in 1990 by then Premier Clyde Wells. Passionate about the environment, one of her proudest achievements while at the ERC was the establishment of the Conservation Corps of Newfoundland and Labrador - an organization that continues to provide environmental education to hundreds of students in projects throughout the province. When the Commission's work ended, Adele worked as a consultant for several years before returning to her roots in Geology as the Executive Director of the Johnson Geo Centre - a position that combined her talents as a geologist and corporate leader and allowed her to spread her enthusiasm for the history and geology of Newfoundland. Adele's personal interests were numerous and diverse - a woman for all seasons. She loved the ski hill, the tennis court, making jewelry, and singing in choirs, while passionately debating political-economic policies for Newfoundland or serving on national environmental boards such as the Nature Conservancy of Canada. An avid traveler, Adele was particularly fond of France and the Basque country, her Mother's ancestral home. Equally as numerous and diverse were her friends - Adele had a passionate personality, a big heart and a sharp sense of humour that drew people to her. She took great pride in being a mother above all else - devoted to her three children, and immensely proud of them all. Adele constantly strived to instill her own sense of adventure and positive outlook on the world in each of her children. She succeeded. Adele's industrious and caring nature are perhaps best exemplified in her final project, Dancing in a Jar, a book about her Father's early life in St. Lawrence. This was the culmination of years of research and reflections on her heritage. As Adele concluded, "The trick of finding joy is to carry it with you, even when life is not going to plan. I see it clearly now." Relatives and friends may visit the family at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Saturday July 2 and Sunday July 3 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the Basilica on Monday, July 4, 2016 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the FIG Fund can be made at www.cfnl.ca    To send a message of condolence or to sign the memorial guest book please visit www.carnells.com

"Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep,
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die."
