HARRIS, Dr. Peter Francis
Passed Away: June 06, 2018
Dr. Peter Francis Harris
, aged 86, died peacefully at home with family at his side on June 6, 2018. Predeceased by his brother, Rupert and sister, Barbara (Tony Fry). Left to mourn are his wife and best friend, Joanne (Myrick), sons Chris and wife, Corinne (Bowen) and Jonathan and fiancée, Kaitlin Kozell. He loved and was loved by his Harris 'Scottish clan'; sister-in-law, Pat (Buist), nephews and nieces, Phil, Michael, Peter, Pam, Tina, Patti, Chris, Suzy and their families; the Fry line, nephew and niece, Mark and Lucy and their families; by his Myrick in-laws, Don, Sharon (Mike), Bill, and Kathi (Jeff), and their families; by his life-long friend and intellectual sparring partner, Brendan Farrow and wife, Danielle; and by our neighbours who've become our extended family over the years.
Peter was born and grew up in Mottingham, England, moving to Scotland with his family during the war years. At 14, he went to Mark Cross, a seminary, and completed his B.A. (London). From there he went to Rome and Oxford to complete his doctoral studies. He was awarded his Doctorate in Theology from the Gregorian University in 1962. While a Fellow at St. Edmund's House, Cambridge, he met the head of Memorial's Philosophy Department who invited him here for a one year teaching appointment. Peter never looked back. He joined the Philosophy Department in 1971 where he taught and also served as department head for 11 years, retiring in 1996. After his retirement, he remained involved with the university community, serving on committees, attending and giving papers at the Philosophy colloquia, mentoring students, publishing articles and participating in Jockey Club, of which he was one of the founding members.
He loved this province and its people. A couple of years ago a cashier in Dominion asked him where he was from. "Pouch Cove.", he replied. He loved walking on the barrens, gardening, cooking, woodworking (he thought he might come back as a carpenter in his next life), reading and puttering around the house and garden. He was wise, fair, kind, thoughtful, patient - except in queues and waiting rooms - and always able to see issues and problems from many perspectives. His humour was intelligent and without malice. He was respected by his colleagues, well-liked by his students and his company enjoyed by his family and friends. He was a good man. Our deeply felt thanks to Dr. Pauline Duke (ret'd), Dr. Russell Dawe, and Agnes Whelan (Family Practice); Drs. Al-Asaaed, McIsaac and Parsons (Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Centre); the staff of 4 North A, including Ms. Bonnie Hobbs; Eastern Health Paramedics and the staff of the HSC Emergency Department, especially Rejean Ashford. Peter was very well looked after by our health care system. A sincere and heartfelt thank you to all our family and friends, whose love, support, help, total reliability and generosity have been overwhelming and sustaining. You have been our light. Flowers (which he loved) or a donation to a charity (which he felt important - UNHCR, The Gathering Place or one of your choice) would be gratefully accepted. At Peter's request, there will no wake; cremation has taken place. The funeral Mass will be held at St. Agnes Church, Pouch Cove, at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 11th.

It is with the heaviest of hearts and love we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of Violet McDonald (nee Groves) at St. Patrick's Mercy Home, on June 11, 2018, aged 84 years. She has now entered into a gentle eternal peace. Waiting to greet her in heaven, her husband Dermot (Derm) McDonald (1989); brother Richard Groves (2000); sister Margaret Pippy (2015) and many other loved family and friends. Lovingly remembered with broken hearts Violet will be mourned by her only daughter and best friend Regina Russell; son-in-law Glenn Russell; her pride and joy, grandson, Tim Caudle; loving sister Carol Ann Costello (Bob), brother in-law, William Pippy, and many special, close nieces and nephews, especially her nephews: Frank Pippy (Margaret) and Gerard Power (Linda Bowring). She loved you all so much and was lovingly known as "Auntie Bee" or "Aunt Vi". Also leaving her many lifelong friends; the management and staff along with her resident friends at St. Patrick's Mercy Home where she's resided since April 2018. She loved being there and her final weeks were very happy. Leaving also her friends at Bayview Heights Manor, her home for 3 years, especially Carol Ann & Derek Toope and PCA Roxanne Sullivan. Thank you to everyone who helped mom these past few months, you've allowed us more quality time with her. Violet was a life long employee of Crosbie Job Insurance where she retired happily at age 65. She loved her crossword books, was an avid sports fan, loved a game of cards, long chats on the phone, but her best times were spent laughing and enjoying life with her sisters and family. She was a very strong woman who never gave up, never gave in, and has instilled this strength in her family. At Violets request cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John's, NL on Thursday, June 14 from 2-9 p.m. No funeral by request. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Topsail Road on Friday, June 15 at 2 p.m. Momma loved her flowers, they will be gratefully accepted or donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation NL or Diabetic Association of NL.
"Those we love won't go away, they gently walk with us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear." Fly high with the angels momma, love you always!
Although you're gone, I'm not alone,
And never shall I be,
For the precious memories of the bond we shared
Will never depart from me.
Our love surpassed the ups and downs
And helped us along the way,
And that same love will give me strength
To manage this loss each day.
On my mind and in my heart, you shall forever be,
For just as much as I am a part of you,
Mom, you will always be a part of me!

Our dad loved life, and his family truly was his pride and joy. In his better days, dad loved in the woods picking berries, "in on the hills" hunting with the dogs, and dearly loved being on the water. His favorite place in the world is the place he grew up, Adams Cove. The past 17 years dad faced many challenges of being deaf and a stroke survivor. He faced everything with patience and a smile. He didn't let his disability burden him and he was a joy to care for. Dad loved to go for drives and have a lunch on Topsail Beach. He would buy flowers and strawberry plants and call his grandchildren whom he called "his children" to plant them together. And oh the funny stories he could tell. We have many, many memories of our dad and he was a true poppy in every sense of the word to his grandchildren. In dad's disabled condition he didn't look at what he couldn't do but what he could do. He had a wonderful outlook on life. Dad will be dearly missed by all his family and will remain in our hearts forever. To send a message of condolence please visit www.carnells.com

ROCHE, Michael Joseph
Born: January 16th, 1962
Passed on: June 14th, 2018

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother and uncle Michael Joseph Roche. As we are heartbroken to lose you, we find comfort in knowing you are now at peace and reunited with those you loved so dearly. Predeceased by loving partner Mary (2009); Parents: Susan (nee McCue) (2014) and Brian (2017) and niece Renee (1998). Left behind with you in our hearts forever are sisters: Mary (Gilbert) Parsons and Rosemarie (Robert) Baldwin; Brothers: Kevin (Mary) and Wayne (Linda). Mike adored his Nieces and Nephews: Ally, Jacob, Emily, Bradley, Jesse, Joshua, Tyler, Jennifer and great niece Hannah. Also a large circle of friends, especially his close friend Rob Saunders and extended family. Mike lived life as a happy, generous, kind hearted person. He approached each day with courage, optimism and determination, never complaining but instead reaching out to help others. He volunteered his time helping others in crisis as his life of sobriety inspired others as well. Getting up and punching a hard days work was what he did and often felt reluctant about taking holidays where he would most likely be found picking blueberries for other people. He was truly an inspiration to us all. Deep gratitude goes out to those who supported Mike during his illness: his coworkers at City Tire who were a big part of his life; Staff of the ATP Clinic including Dr. David Jones, Julie, Barb, Kim, Liz and Lisa; staff of 4NA and Palliative Care Miller Centre; Nurse Practitioner Charlene Downey and Dr. Essaji. We are forever grateful for the incredible support we received from Dr. Greenland, Community health nurse Heidi McNeil, Nurse Practitioner Carmel Collins and Nursing Navigator Frankie, both from Palliative Care. As Mike remained at home the phone calls and support we received was truly amazing. We never could have done it without your guidance, team work and sincere concerns. We are eternally grateful! Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home 73 Commonwealth Ave., Mt Pearl on Friday June 15, 6-9 pm; Saturday 12-4 and 6-9 and Sunday 10-12. WHELAN, Mary Ann
Born: January 8th, 1948
Passed on: June 13th, 2018
1948 - 2018

It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Ann Whelan announces her passing on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at the age of 70 years. On January 8th, in the winter of 1948, Mary was born to proud and loving parents Patrick and Rita Whelan. She would be one of seven children and the oldest girl in the Whelan family of the Lower Road of Dunville. At the tender age of 14, after the death of her mother, she would quietly and without complaint, leave school to assume the mantle of mother to her siblings and accept the everyday responsibilities of maintaining a household. She willingly sacrificed her own path in life to ensure that her younger brother and sisters would be loved and cared for and to ensure that her family remained together at a time when so many rural Newfoundland families did not. In the summer of 1973, she would bring the joy of her life into the world, Kimberly Ann, and once again took up the mantle of loving mother. Later in life she was rewarded with two beautiful granddaughters, Tyra and Brooke, and once again slipped on another mantle, this time one of devoted grandmother. She would continue on to selflessly love and provide for her family, in whatever way she could, every day of her life. Her accomplishments can be seen in the love that she showed to all her family and friends and recognized in the absolute and steadfast love she received from all of them in return.
Mary will be ever remembered and ever loved by her loving daughter Kim (Nick) and her beloved granddaughters, Tyra and Brooke, as well as her devoted sisters Marie (Doug), and Patricia (Norman), brothers Jerry (Selina), and Brian. She is predeceased by her parents Patrick and Rita and brothers Raymond (Jackie), Aubrey (Mary) and John. She also leaves to mourn with loving memories a large circle of nieces and nephews and beautiful friends. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Maher's Funeral Home, Placentia. Visitation to take place on Saturday, June 16th from 7 to 9pm, and Sunday, June 17th from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm. Mass of Christian Burial to take place 10:30am on Monday, June 18th at St. Anne's Church, Dunville. Interment to follow at Dermot McGettigan Memorial Cemetery, Southeast Placentia.

WICKS, Lloyd L.W.
Born August 26, 1932, entered into eternal rest surrounded by his loving children on June 1, 2018. Lloyd was born in Valleyfield, Newfoundland and as a boy moved to several Newfoundland communities with his family as they pursued business opportunities, most notably the operation of the Gambo Hotel in the pre-confederation days. A teenager at the time, Lloyd became enthralled with politics, public policy and humanitarianism. This began as he listened to the arguments in favor of confederation made by Joseph R. Smallwood, then a resident of the Gambo Hotel, around the hotel dining table.
After high school, he trained as a Radio Technician at the Radio College of Canada in Toronto (and often mentioned that he saw every Toronto Maple Leafs game while he was there). His professional life, in radio and other business ventures, was soon superseded by his strong desire to play a more significant role in the well-being of his beloved Newfoundland and Labrador. Thus in 1963 he began a 30 year career, firstly as a Magistrate and then in 1974 as a Judge of The Provincial Court. In that same year, with great determination and persuasion he founded and became the first President of the Canadian Association of Provincial Court Judges. The Association continues to exist today in support of the provincial bench across Canada. He regarded this as his crowning professional legacy.
More importantly, he became a model family man with his wife of 59 years, Eileen, his four children and ten grandchildren. Over the years Lloyd embraced many roles, an advocate, a supporter, a listener, an advisor, a protector and a mentor. He continued his lifelong love of radio as a Ham Radio Operator. He was a tireless supporter of the Anglican Church as well as many charitable causes. He lived his life with a quiet but confident determination allowing him to bring many admirable goals to fruition, helping many people along the way. Predeceased by his wife Eileen, December 2016, parents Alice and Lewis Wicks, sisters Annie, Pearl and Patsy, brothers Eric and Gordon. Leaving to mourn his son Brad (Donna); grandchildren Hilary, Spencer and Justin; daughter Valerie (Fraser); grandchildren Charlotte and Nathan Genge; daughter Pamela (Everard); grandchildren Matthew, Alexandra and Victoria Stanford; daughter Sandra (Peter); grandchildren Nicholas and Elizabeth Hoyles; sister-in-law Vera Blagg (David); many nieces and nephews from the Knee, Blackwood, Nichol and Wicks families.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visitation on Sunday, June 3 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to take place on Monday, June 4th, 2018 at 11 a.m. from The Church of St. Mary the Virgin. Inurnment at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and The Alzheimer's Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. To send a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com
