MILNE, William J. - Naval Architect. Bill Milne was born in Saint John,
New Brunswick on June 3, 1928. Bill was a practicing naval architect and university
professor in a career spanning nearly five decades. An alumnus of McGill University
and MIT, Bill trained at shipyards in Europe and Canada before joining the
firm of German & Milne in Montreal in 1953, where he was involved in the
design of numerous ships for the Canadian government and commercial clients,
including research and patrol vessels, package freighters, ferries, tugs, and
icebreakers. In 1979 Bill joined the faculty of Memorial University in St.
John's, Newfoundland as founding chairman of the Department of Naval Architectural
Engineering - the first such program in Canada - where over 15 years he trained
and helped establish in their careers a new generation of Canadian naval architects.
Throughout his career Bill served on many ad-hoc and permanent maritime commissions,
including the National Research Council Advisory Committee for the location
and construction of the "Ice Tank" which eventually became the Institute
for Marine Dynamics in Newfoundland, and numerous government enquiries into
the loss of vessels at sea. Among many professional affiliations, Bill was
Honorary Life Member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers,
serving for many years as secretary of the Eastern Canadian Section and on
its education committee. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval
Architects, a member of the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineering, and a
founding member of the Marine Technology Society in Canada.
Bill leaves his wife of 26 years, Ruth Nicholson Milne of Farm Point, Quebec.
He was formerly married to Jill Thorogood Milne of Montreal. Bill leaves his
children Chris, Geoffrey, MerryJill, Joseph, and Jonathan; and step-children
Anne, Roxanna, John, Lowell, Horton and Walter. Bill was the proud grandfather
of thirteen wonderful grandchildren. He leaves two sisters - Barbara Lambert
and Eleanor Milne, both of Ottawa.
Bill loved to walk and ski in the woods with his dogs, and after retiring to
the Gatineau in 1994 was an active volunteer in cutting and maintaining hiking
trails throughout the neighbourhood. Bill was a voracious reader and collector
of books, particularly on Canadian history and the Arctic. He was a birder
and stargazer with his grandchildren, and taught two generations of descendants
to enjoy Canadian summers and winters skiing, skating, and canoeing.
Bill died March 3, 2006 in Farm Point, Quebec. He is remembered
lovingly by all, especially Orkney.

MOORE, Rev. A. George - B.A., B.D., S.T.M., Doctoris Divinitatis
(honoris causa), has died in the 93rd year of his life, in the 64th year of his
ministry and in the 60th year of his marriage. Until the last possible moment,
and even beyond, George has never failed, never stopped contributing to the
common good and never diminished in his adoration for Jean, his wife and his
partner in all things.
In the ministry, George and Jean have served their United Church congregations
with energy, devotion and their particular ability to smooth troubles and to
bring people together. George's charges have included Grand Falls and Musgravetown
in Newfoundland, Stanbridge East, St. Mungo's and Granby in Quebec, St. Luke's,
St. James, Erskine-and-American in Montreal and St. John's in Pointe Claire.
Beyond the parish, George's ministry included those who were not accepted elsewhere;
his responsibilities included Home Missions and the Chair of the Montreal Presbytery.
At home, George's love has embraced his extended family, grown from Jean and
sons David (Janet), and John (Keisha), to include grandchildren Linda (Drew),
Amber, Nick, as well as Niasha and now his beautiful great-granddaughter Denver.
Born in 1913 on July 19th in Safe Harbour, Newfoundland, sixth child of Henry
Moore and Elsie Davis, George grasped the opportunities life brought him, as
teacher in his home town, as divinity student at McGill University, as chaplain
with Captain's commission in the Canadian Army and as ordained minister with
a full career. His achievement in life has been known to every parishioner,
as well as to the University, which honoured him with the Doctorate Degree,
and to the Church, which called him back three times after retirement to minister
to congregations in need. Above all, few of us have given and received so much
love and affection.
George died on March 15th at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, despite the best of
care. A private funeral is being held in Ottawa. George's memorial service
is to be held at St. John's United Church, 98 Aurora Avenue, Pointe-Claire,
Quebec, on May 6th at 2:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to
St. John's United Church (514) 697-6459.

We sat beside your bedside.
Our hearts were crushed and sore.
We did our duty to the end,
'Til we could do no more.
In tears we saw you sinking,
We watched you fade away.
And though our hearts were breaking,
We knew you could not stay.
You left behind some aching hearts
That loved you most sincere,
We never shall and never will
Forget you Mom dear.
