ACKERMAN, Zacchaeus (Zac) Jerry - Trinity, Bonavista Bay, (born Sydney Cove, Pork Island, Bonavista Bay), aged 78, died on Monday, May 20, 2002. He leaves to mourn his son Carl (Pauline); daughter Sally (Peter Morris); grandsons: Stephen and Michael Ackerman, Christopher Morris; nieces, nephews and other family members. Zac (Jerry) worked hard his whole life and was highly respected by his many co-workers and friends. He will be missed. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Kittiwake Funeral Home, Pound Cove. ALLEN, Florence "Flo" - at the Belleville General Hospital on Friday, May 24, 2002. Florence Allen of Haig Rd., Belleville and formerly of Newfoundland in her 76th year. Daughter of the late William and Margaret Graham. Beloved wife of Gerald Allen. Loving mother of Gail Lucas (Jim), Richard Allen (Iris), Edward Allen (Jen) all of Belleville, and Dave Allen (Sadi) of Ottawa. Predeceased by step-son Gerald Allen, survived by daughter-in-law Diane Allen. Loving grandmother of Chris, Danielle, Jason, Jeremy, Jamie, Dave, Matthew, Mark and Michael. Predeceased by grandson Richard. Survived by brother-in-law Douglas Allen (Ethel) of Topsail, Newfoundland. Predeceased by her sisters and brothers. Also loved by her many nieces and nephews. ANDERSON, Samuel Edward - Passed peacefully away at the Hoyles Escasoni Complex on Thursday, May 16, 2002, Samuel Anderson of Chance Cove, age 91 years. Predeceased by wife Ida, daughter Florence, son Melvin, sister Elizabeth and brother James. Leaving to mourn wife Myrtle; daughters: Elizabeth (Willis Reid), St. John`s, Louise (Harris Vaters), Pouch Cove, Nina (Melvin), St. John`s; sons: Aubrey (Hazel), Chance Cove, Cecil (Phyllis), Bishops Falls, John (Olive), Chance Cove; thirteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. Special friend Myrtle and a large circle of other relatives and friends. ANGEL, Gerald Patrick (Gerry) - Passed peacefully away in the presence of his devoted family on Thursday, May 30, 2002 at St. Patrick`s Mercy Home, Gerald Patrick Angel (Gerry) in his 90th year. Predeceased by his wife, Irene, December 1999, and his daughter Reeni in February 1951. Left with fond and loving memories are his six children: Anna Woolgar, Gerry Jr. (Regina), Bob (Roseanne), Catherine (Bob Squires), Pat (Libby), Dr. John (Ann); 16 grandchildren: David, Greg and Reeni Woolgar; Ashlee Angel; Allison and John-Paul Angel; Nancy, Robert Jr., Greg, Matthew and Mark Squires; Melissa and Jillian Angel; Doug, Christopher and Rebecca Angel; one great-grandchild, Jake Woolgar in California, USA. Many other family and friends, including, brother Stan in Norwich, England and special nephew Ron Chaytor in Ottawa, Ontario. Gerry was an active member of his community and church and in recognition of his volunteer services obtained a number of awards and distinctions including: Pope Paul VI - Image of the August Cross Award for Outstanding Work for the Church and Pope; member of the Royal St. John`s Regatta Committee Hall of Fame (1989); Honorary Life President of the Royal St. John`s Regatta Committee; member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame (1991); 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. Resting at Caul`s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation Friday, Saturday and Sunday 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. Funeral Mass on Monday, June 3rd, 2002, at 9:45 a.m. from St. Pius Tenth Church, Smithville Crescent. BRANDT, Marjorie M. (Kennedy) - Age 67. Passed peacefully away at her home in Kings Lane, Winchester, Virginia after a long illness. Marjorie was born in Buchans and moved to Corner Brook with her parents John A. and Helen M. Kennedy, West Street, both deceased. She was also predeceased by a brother John Michael Kennedy. Marjorie is survived by her devoted husband of 49 years, Wayne M. Brandt, also one son and three daughters and their families, all in the U.S. Also surviving are her siblings, Joan (Howie) Chase, Rhode Island, Betty (Edgar, deceased), Yeo, Tor., Anita (Merrill) Belanger, Topsail, Marilyn (Jim) Cuming, Owen Sound, Lew (Helga), Langley, B.C., Gerry (Susie) Burnaby, B.C., and David (Cynthia), Kyongbuk, South Korea. Funeral Services were held on Monday, May 6, and all four sisters were in attendance.

DAWE, Gerald Ampthil M.D. - Died peacefully at home surrounded by his children on May 26, 2002 in his 78th year. Born the youngest son of the late Harvey Dawe and Jemima (Harvey) Dawe on June 13, 1923 in St. John`s, Newfoundland. A graduate of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University, Gerald returned to Newfoundland where he established his practice in Family Medicine on Bell Island from 1947 until 1955. He then moved to Ontario with his family where he continued a Family Practice with a specialty in Anesthesia. He enjoyed a successful career in the Niagara area and later in the Huntsville-North Bay area until he retired in 1995. A passionate gardener and humble artist, Gerald enjoyed a simple and full life surrounded by nature and his love of classical music. Leaving to mourn are his children David, JoAnn, Rebecca and Janet; their mother Ruby (Anstey) Dawe; sisters Doris Vavasour and Chris Candy; sister-in-law Jean (Lindsay) Dawe; brothers-in-law Ralph Carter and Bob Candy and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Gerald is predeceased by his wife Rita; sisters Enid Humphries, Joan Carter and Jean MacIntosh; brothers Douglas and Robert; sister-in-law Pam (Novelle) Dawe; brothers-in-law Charles Vavasour, Bruce Humphries and Edward MacIntosh. Private services were held at his home in the village of Merrickville, Ontario. Extended family, friends and colleagues are invited to attend his burial at St. Peter`s Anglican Cemetery, Upper Gullies, Newfoundland at noon on Sunday, July 21st, 2002. GARDNER, Joseph (Douglas) - Peacefully on Tuesday evening, May 7, 2002, Doug passed away at home with his loved ones at his side after a prolonged illness. Predeceased by parents Bernard and Bridget and brother Harry, Doug leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife Bertha; son Dr. Douglas Gardner; daughters Annmarie McNeal and Karen (David) Nyhof; grandchildren Chelsea and Quinn Gardner, Sterling and Kyle McNeal, and Lane and Lukas Nyhof. HALLEY, Joan (nee Healy) - Died peacefully in the afternoon of Saturday, May 18, 2002 in her 95th year. She was predeceased by her husband Raymond Patrick who died on May 27, 1969. She leaves to mourn her son, Raymond James and her daughter-in-law and best friend, Yvonne. "Gram" also leaves, with the very fondest of memories, her three grandsons: Raymond Patrick, Shane Edward and Brian John Davis. The Halley family wishes to thank the very competent and compassionate staff of North I at the Hoyles-Escasoni Complex who cared for Joan during the last seven years. W.J. McMANAMON, Patrick Joseph, M.B., B.cH., B.A.O., D.M.R.D., F.R.C.P.C. - Born January 29, 1938, Bangor-Erris, County Mayo, Ireland; died due to pancreatic cancer at St. Clare`s Mercy Hospital, May 24, 2002, St. John`s, Newfoundland, Canada. Predeceased by his father, Peter; his mother, Margaret; his brothers, John and infant brother Peter Paul; his parents-in-law, Matthew and Kathleen Kennedy; and his son-in-law, Peter Grant. Leaving to mourn, with loving memories, his wife, Mairead; his daughter, Cliona; his sons: Darragh and Cormac; and his sister, Mary Mawhood (Houston, Texas). Also leaving to mourn a large circle of friends and relatives in Canada, the United States, Ireland and England. Paddy attended Knockbeg College prior to receiving his basic medical education at University College Dublin. While in medical school, he met Mairead, and they married in 1966. Subsequently, Paddy and Mairead moved to St. John`s, Newfoundland, Canada, where they made a second home. Paddy received further training in Radiology in Liverpool, England from 1967-1969. Upon their return to Newfoundland, Paddy took up a position with the General Hospital. Paddy had most recently been Professor of Radiology and Chair of the Discipline of Radiology at the Medical School of Memorial University of Newfoundland. In his time, Paddy helped spearhead a campaign to acquire a Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine, a major advancement to health care in Newfoundland and Labrador. He was a valued colleague and a mentor to countless physicians and friends, young and old alike. He will be missed by all who knew him. ORSER, Weldon Harold (Buck) - Passed away at the Palliative Care Unit, St. Clare`s Mercy Hospital on Wednesday, May 29, 2002, amongst family and friends, following a courageous two year battle with colon cancer, Weldon "Buck" Orser, age 60 years. Although he was originally from Hartland, NB, he was a Newfoundlander at heart. He served with the RCMP in NF & Lab. for 27 years and with the government for 12 years. He is predeceased by his mother Gladys; father Harold; step-mother Ruby and several aunts and uncles. Leaving to mourn his wife of 36 years Geraldine; son Chris; daughter Carrie Lynn Williams (husband Michael); two granddaughters: Karly and Madison Williams; mother-in-law Marion Stokoe; sisters-in-law: Gail Lee (Ken) and Ann Smith; aunts: Ruby Dickinson and Ruth Hare (Clifton); cousins: Robert Dickinson (Gloria) and Joyce Estabrooks (Jerry); step-sisters: Susan Grant (Tom) and Ann Morgan (Eric). PATRICK, Harold Bennett Jr. - Lewiston -Returned Home to the Lord. Harold, "Pat", "Hal" Patrick, 71 of 11 Champlain Avenue died Sunday May 12 at Central Maine Medical Center surrounded by loving family. He was born in Sanford, Maine, January 8, 1931. He was the son of Harold and Marion Bennett Patrick. He graduated from Sanford High School Class of 1949. After serving 4 years in the United States Air Force from 1950-1954, he attended Boston University majoring in business. He married Sheila Jackman, a native of St. John`s Newfoundland on May 30, 1963. He returned to Maine in 1977 after living in Wellesley, Massachusetts and working for the First National Bank of Boston as a Senior Financial Analyst. He worked for many years in banking as a commercial loan officer and later as branch manager. He also served as President of the Lewiston Chamber of Commerce from 1984-1985 and director of the Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed many summers in Newfoundland with his family. His passions included his family, music, sports, politics and Newfie history. He is survived by his wife of Lewiston, two sons, Brian of Portland and Kevin of Plant City, FL, a daughter, Carol Rockwell of Keene, NH, a son-in-law, Stephen Rockwell of Keene, NH, a sister, Joan and husband John Lederer of Albuquerque, NM, two Grandchildren, Matthew and Katie Rockwell, many nieces and nephews and also his wife`s extended family in Massachusetts and Canada. RAYMENT, Peggy Edith (nee Dawson) - November 20, 1921-May 28, 2002. Peggy passed away peacefully at Salem Manor in Leduc, Alta. She was born in Calgary, and during the war worked in Ottawa and then moved to Edmonton, where she met and married Fred Rayment. They lived for five years in Lethbridge, Alta. and then moved to St. John`s, Nfld. where they spent 38 years and finally they retired to Leduc in 1994. Peggy was a long time supporter and member of the Unitarian Service Committee in St. John`s. Peggy is survived by her husband and two sons, Michael and David; also by her sister Evelyn Bye (Marshall); grandnephew Justin Kohls; her niece Carol Elias (John) and their children; her brother Gerald (Jennie) and their son Geoffry (Jill) and family and daughter Lori. Peggy will also be missed by members of her husband`s family, Joyce Vandermeer, Hugh (Elsie), Ken (Audrey), Tom (Shirl), Fay Borg (Alan) and their respective families. STEELE, Vladislava Julie (Nejedly) - B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., Professor (retired). Died Saturday, May 18, 2002 after a valiant battle with multiple Myeloma. Born on July 8, 1934 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. After surviving the Nazi occupation, Vladis and her family fled the Communists and the Russians in 1949. Settling in Montreal, she was educated at Rosemount High School and McGill University where she received her Ph.D. in 1965. She taught Biology at McGill University and from 1962 at Memorial University until incapacitated with her illness. She became a professor and served a term as deputy head of the department. Predeceased by her father, Vladislav Nejedly, Vladis is survived by her mother Julie Nejedly (Exnarova); her brother Peter Nejedly; and sister Martha Khan, all of Ottawa; a son Sean (Ted) Alexander Steele, currently residing in Mississauga and her husband Don Steele of St. John`s. Following cremation, interment will be in Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal. TILLER, Phoebe, 1926 - 2002 - Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Phoebe Julia Tiller (nee Keeping), passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at the Rockyview Hospital, Calgary. Phoebe was surrounded by loved ones and in the thoughts of family and friends at the time of her passing. Cherished wife of Norman for 46 years. Loving mother to Glenn (Collette), Sandra (Craig), and Robin (Rob). Phoebe will be remembered as a doting grandmother to Jared and Carly, Lauren and Lindsay. Phoebe is survived by her sisters Onita, Sadie, Clarissa (Charles), Dorcas (Stan), Shirley, and brothers Stanley and Clarence, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her infant daughter Margaret Jean, and her parents Clarence and Margaret. Phoebe was born on Sagona, Newfoundland on March 15, 1926, later moving to St. John`s with her family. She married Norman in Windsor, Ontario in 1956; they moved to Montreal, finally settling in Calgary in 1967. Phoebe would readily admit her greatest achievement was her adoring children. Frank was born June 12, 1939 in Harbour Buffett, Placentia Bay. He relocated to North Harbour in 1966 with his bride Selina, where together they made their home and raised their daughter Roxane and son Randy. Frank earned his living from the sea, a profession he dearly loved. In recent years five new wonders entered his life, son-in-law Leeland, daughter-in-law Lori-Ann and grandchildren Riley (6), Kayleigh (5) and Braden (3). Predeceased by his father, George in 1966 and his mother, Adelaide in 1999. WHITE, George Edward - Passed peacefully away May 03, 2002 at Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, George White, loving husband of Catherine White (Tucker) and the late Margaret Quartz. He also leaves granddaughter Christina White. Predeceased by his parents, George Edward White and Irene Edith Jackman, his brother Richard (Dick), sisters Barbara, Jean and his son George. George was born in Grand Falls, NF on November 13, 1913. He signed on with CNSL in 1930. In 1939 George joined HMCS Otter. In March "41, the Otter caught fire in the North Atlantic and sank with the loss of 22 lives. After survivor`s leave he sailed in the Sunbeam. In 1941 he joined the corvette Louisberg. This ship, while on the famous "Newfie-Derry" run was less than a ¼ mile from the Spikenard, when it was torpedoed. "It was generally thought by our crew," George recalled, "that the fish was meant for us." In 1943 George transferred to the Navy Signal School in Quebec. He was Sergeant-at-Arms for 12 years at Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 Verdun. For many years he led parades through Montreal. One friend recalls the remark made by another friend when George White was leading a parade of several hundred veterans down St. Catherine Street. He said, "Look at all those Canadians following a Newfoundlander!" In May 2000 George made is last trip to Grand Falls when he and North Atlantic Convoy veterans came to St. John`s to commemorate the Battle of the North Atlantic. The Montreal White Ensign Naval Group gathered for a service at St. Willibrord`s Church and held a reception in his honor for his shipmates and friends to share memories of him. Relatives and friends from St. John`s and Labrador also gathered in St. John`s. "Lead them on in the parades of the next world George! We`ll miss you Sailor but we`ll not forget you." WILLIAMS, Jethro - Passed away at the Placentia Health Care Centre on Thursday, May 9, 2002, age 90 years. Predeceased by wife Gertrude, brothers: Steward and Jack; sisters: Sisley, Leah, Violet, Julie, Bertha and Grace. Left with fond and loving memories children: Grace (Don), Linda (George), Doreen (Bill), Doris, Percy, Cliff (Sheila), Calvin (Betty), sister Mabel; twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also, a number of other relatives and friends. Resting at Maher`s Funeral Home, Placentia on Friday 2 pm - 10 pm, Saturday 2 pm - 10 pm and Sunday 9 am. Funeral Service to take place at 12 noon on Sunday, May 12, 2002 at St. Luke`s Anglican Church, Placentia. Interment to follow at The St. Martin`s Anglican Cemetery, Dunville.

WISEMAN, Elizabeth - Passed peacefully away after a short battle with cancer at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville on Thursday, May 30, 2002, Elizabeth J. Wiseman of Shoal Harbour in her 71st year. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are her husband William of 51 years; daughter Brenda (Doug Barnes), Sarnia, Ont.; sons Freeman (Lily), Shoal Harbour, Tony (Anne Marie), Clarenville and Dean (Madonna), Shoal Harbour; sisters Phyllis Philpott, Annie Hancock, Dulcie (Merlin Feltham) and Kathy (Geoff Muggridge); brothers Wayne (Roselyn) Starkes and Sterling (Sharon) Starkes; grandchildren Tonya, Wendy, Dana, Melissa, Christine, Suzanne and Tyler and a large number of relatives and friends. Resting at Fewer`s Funeral Home, Clarenville. Funeral service 2 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2002, from Shoal Harbour United Church with interment at United Cemetery, Shoal Harbour. WOODLAND, Irene (nee Green) - From the life of love, to the glory of God`s presence, Irene Woodland departed from this life on Sunday, May 26, 2002, in her 86th year. Predeceased by her loving husband, Theodore and her oldest son, Newman; Mother and Father, Lucy and Caleb Green and three brothers: Newman, Hubert and Curtis Green. She is now reunited with them in Heaven. Inspired by her example and honoured to say, this is our Mother and Grandmother, and dearly missing her, are her children and grandchildren.
